  • PHEV or Plug-In Hybrids are extremely popular for those that want the benefits of driving an electric vehicle (EV) without having to deal with any range anxiety. The new Ford Escape PHEV will provide 60kms of electric only driving and with various EV modes, you can choose to save or charge the battery with a touch of a button.

Just ran across your review, beautiful scenery and well put together. I pick up my Escape Titanium PHEV this week. This will be my third Escape, in the last 10 years. I tend to drive them hard and have never had any issues. Looking forward to seeing what the PHEV can do.

Good review although you can increase the regen by selecting L on the gear selector, especially driving around town. My daily drive is only 10 miles so charge every couple of days, and I can do a long journey with no range worries. I've had mine 4 months now, 1700 miles and still have a third of a tank For me it's the best of both worlds....love it.

Make sure you add fuel stabilizer with every tank of gas. Fuel will start to varnish (and turn into something similar to turpentine) after a few months. It’s not something you want in your tank, pump, lines, injectors, or combustion chambers. I mix a measured combination of Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and fuel stabilizer in the little Lucas “tune up in a bottle” bottles for my wife to add to her tank when gassing up her Prius Prime (we omit treating the fuel on road trips). She gassed up about every 4 months, too.

@@ChrisCameronSuccess manufacturers don’t design their vehicles to burn turpentine. It’s a gasoline problem, not an auto manufacture problem. If you want to varnish your fuel system: awesome. Me? I’d rather invest the fifteen cents per tank and use a stabilizer to prevent a problem before it happens.

@@buttsexandbananapeels I don't think you listened to what Chris "CameronOnline" is saying ...by your own choice. "Manufacturers already planned for this. These cars are designed to hold fuel for long periods." He (assuming a guy) has been driving PHEV or BEV since 2014.
Unless you have current lab testing results to refer to, that provides clear evidence of any change in fuel "after a few months", there really is no point in bringing up the subject. This is the one sad part of statements made online. Anyone can say anything ....whether correct or not, there is a demographic that believes EVERYTHING without question. Just saying. If you are correct, then I think EVERYONE would be interested. Remember, PHEV's have in fact been on the road for several years now ....beginning 2009. As problems are discovered, they are addressed ....otherwise, companies go out of business if they don't fix their problems.

Picked up an 2021 Escape Titanium PHEV at the beginning of Oct. Just hit one month with it and have about 845 miles in it. 753 of those are Electric. Typically charge it at work with our ChargePoint chargers or at home with the 120v outlet. I've probably spent $30 on electricity so far and I'm still on the first tank of gas (3/4 left). So far I'm definitely saving money by not filling up with gas. I can't stand the Sync system but the Escape itself is great.

I just got Escape PHEV weeks ago, Ford's hybrid system is impressive. My experience of Escape PHEV is so smooth and quiet. I couldn't tell it is on engine mode or EV mode while I'm driving. There is no combustion engine kick in feeling, the smooth transition between gas engine and electric motor is way beyond my experience of Toyota hybrid in the past. Although it only offers front wheel drive at the moment, I can live with that for city drive and getting better fuel economy and roomy cabin. I will say if you are looking for Hydundai ioniq phev, Toyota Prius prime or Kia niro phev for fuel economy but also want a decent leg and head room for passagers plus huge cargo space. Just go for Escape PHEV.

The Escape battery was almost depleted so I will consider my experience as being more with its Hybrid capability than its PHEV. And boy oh boy what that thing sooooo slooow. I am a big fan of plug-in hybrids. I see them as a great transition to full EV for the next decade or longer. But 60 km (37 miles) of electric is marginal. The RAV4 PHEV gets 42. I don’t know why the manufactures skimp on the batteries. Only a few more batteries would take the electric mileage up to 50 miles which would cover nearly all daily driving (except for people with insanely long commutes - are you listening, Los Angeles?) I have been driving a Honda Clarity with 47 miles of electric range for the past three years. The only time I use gas is on road trips. The manufacturers "skimp" on batteries because of 1. Cost and 2. Packaging. Batteries are expensive and take up a lot of room. Actually discovered the first con today… the fuel nozzle is really tricky to fill the gaz tank… the full pump has to be put at an angle to get the fuel to flow without clicking… will definitely ask about that on my first oil change… I only put fuel twice since i own the truck… and i have 2200km already….

I'm surprised Ford would try anything fancy since they can't even build an AC system that doesn't fail. $1500 and it still won't work. Been looking at Prius to drive during summer. Reliable at 250K miles. Will the new Escapes be able to say that? Ha! The only reason I keep my 2014 Escape is because it's a six-cylinder and handles like a dream. Meanwhile, the Canadian scenery made me watch this entire thing. Nice review and nice ride, I've just lost faith in Ford.

You might want to check under your hood. The 2014 Ford Escape WASN'T AVAILABLE with a six-cylinder engine. The available engines were a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder (168hp); a 1.6 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (173hp); and a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (231hp).

Based on this review, it sounds like the Escape is a better option that the RAV4 prime. What this review does not discuss is the finishes and the quality expectation between a Ford and a Toyota. When car shopping I have never pick a Ford over a more expensive Japanese car because they simply feel better to drive and overall quality of the finishes.

When a person wants to go on a long road trip, like across Canada, or throughout the U.S. ....do you really think an EV is smart? The PHEV, in 5 years time, will be a very attractive vehicle considering there will not be very many "used" PHEV available now. Your thought process is very flawed.

@@taxicamel I live in the arctic circle, northern Scandinavia still missing decent charging infrastructure (Lofots is an extreme example), but there are so many who choose a BEV to explore this region. You just have to plan a bit more carefully. Did you mean that planning is hard with "flawed thought process"? :) You can always find a case where ICE cars could be better, but you can get insight into the future while looking at current Norways statistics (Europe follow suit with penalizing air polution in different ways) - two PHEVs near the bottom of TOP20, BEVs being the rest. One more thing about Europe - expansion of EVs in Europe and China, how the percentage grows, it is happening much faster than in Norway in last decade.
