SONG 01 - J'Y CROIS ENCORE This is a song she wrote about resiliency, hope and successfully fighting adversity. This is a recurrent theme for Lara, as you will notice even with this concert alone. Lara faced a lot of obstacles in her life: love and professional betrayals, sadly some friends or family members death, many, many different health issues, … and she for sure knows a lot about resiliency. This song is about someone who feels isolated, trapped into her negative emotions, but who, despite this, will find the strength to rebuild her spirit and her inner rebel. When I say a song she wrote, most of the french songs from her catalog at that time were a co-creation with Rick Allison, her former boyfriend. They moved together from Belgium to Quebec, they were together until the mid-90s when they broke. They broke but remained together professionally, he was still his composer and producer until that year 2003. That tour was the final chapter of their successful collaboration. They apparently broke professionally because she needed a break after this tour and he didn't accept it. In their co-creation process, Lara was typically the lyricist and the melodist, Rick was leading the arrangements, the harmonization of the song. He contributed from time to time to a few lyrics. Let’s appreciate the time spent by Gaby from The Lara the Ring Fabian channel to add decent English subtitles to this video
Here is the context around this concert: * It was held in Olympia, a small but prestigious venue in Paris that hosted all greats, French or international, since the end of 19th century. From Louis Armstrong and The Beatles up to Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, .... . This is kind of the equivalent for Paris of Carnegie Hall. * In 2003, it had been 3 years Lara had returned to France after the abrupt ending of her US career (due among others to politics from Celine's husband and producer). * Things had changed a lot for her in France since she erupted on the french musical scene as a storm in 1997, her 3rd album, the first to be released in France, becoming the second most sold record by a female artist in France history. She had been the target since her return from an hostile bashingcampaign by french media, attacking her belting style, her vocal power abilities. Many newspapers were describing her as a shouting machine. She was even recurrently mocked in a famous puppet show that, at that time, was even more popular and influential in France as South Park is nowadays in the US. * These attacks were totally unfair of course but they were typical at that time from the french media behaviors in the music and entertainment business: the key people in these media were used to demonstrate their immense power by promoting a newcomer then suddenly making a u-turn and trying to destroy their careers. They did the same before to french greats such as Charles Aznavour and Johnny Hallyday, who suffered from it but overcame it. * 2003 was a peak in this bashing campaign but it lasted for quite some time after it. Lara was branded in the french press as an has been. At the same time, she was still hugely supported by a strong and loving fan base, and some of her albums reached the #1 place in French charts. * Fortunately nowadays, these toxic critics retired or lost their influence, thru the disintermediation created by social networks, and the new generation of journalists, tv hosts and influencers is now recognizing the artistry and greatness of Lara. Lara is now very present and positively received in French TV shows. She was omnipresent on French TV the last 2 years for instance. She has been a vocal coach in many contests in France. She just released today her new album "Je suis là", very good one, and the promo interviews campaign were all positive. * But early 2003, when this concert was recorded, Lara was still impacted a lot by these attacks. Later, she decided to simply ignore it and stay true to herself. All this to explain, that for this concert, she wanted to respond to these unfair critics, and to expose another side of her artistry: she created a softer, more delicate version of her hits. * The concert was minimalist, totally acoustic, based on a piano, and sometimes a quartet of chords. No big orchestra, just a few instruments to let space for her voice to shine. The focus here is on the interpretation and the voice precision. She worked a lot on her voice to expose more nuances and it definitely paid off. See the tone consistency while smoothly moving from one register to the other, notice her amazing phrasing and diction that highlights the strong lyrics and the stories. * This tour was titled "En Toute Intimité" (which can be translated as "In Complete Intimacy"): she wanted to have a more direct connection to the audience, and establish an intimacy atmosphere. To make this even more evident to the audience, she decided to perform in a night-dress then a silky baby doll nightie.
