I lost my dad when I was 3 years old, the way Lara she says "PAPA" always get me in tears and still pierces my heart. Lara is an angel from another world ❤
Let me give you the context of this performance. This is a cover of her idol Barbra Streisand. Medley means this is a combination, here a combination of 2 songs : Papa Can You Hear Me and Piece of Sky. Yentl is the name of the 1983 musical movie starring Barbra that included these 2 songs. Yentl is a masterpiece, a musical drama movie that is one of the most personal project from Barbra Streisand. The story is based on a short story “Yentl the Yeshisha book” from Isaac Bashevis Singer and Barbra stars in this movie as a jewish girl who is secretly studying Talmud by her father (normally reserved to men) and after his death disguise herself in a man to attend rabbinical studies. And there falls in love with a male schoolmate. The first song is performed in the movie after her father death, when she decides to impersonate a boy and attend the rabbinical school. The second song ends the movie: she is on the boat aiming to America and Ellis Island, she has left Poland and is ready for a brand new start in a new world. The 1983 movie was critically and publicly acclaimed and won several oscars including the music and soundtrack. It also won several golden globe awards including best director for Barbra. The 2 songs here were composed by french legend Michel Legrand. It was his 3rd oscar for movie music as he had already won 2 for The Thomas Crown Affair ("The Windmills of Your Mind") and The Summer of ‘42. Lara is an absolute fan of Barbra and this cover is both a tribute to her and her father. She committed herself to cover these 2 songs on stage at least once, when she attended the movie release in theaters at 14yo. These are 2 very difficult songs and it’s quite rare to find singers able to perform these live and chained (was Lara the only one doing it with that level of vocal, stamina and acting skills?). I call this perf “Lara in broadway mode”. Barbra said to Lara: "I don’t say this very often but you are very good". And later Barbra covered Lara’s masterpiece Broken Vow in some of her own concerts. The parents of Lara were attending this concert, as they were celebrating their wedding’s 30th anniversary, and Lara often focuses on her dad during this perf. She dedicated them later in the concert another cover she made: I will always love you.
Aha, there you are Eric! ❤ I hope you listened to the whole thing, as your name is mentioned a couple of times for a reason. I went back to the email you sent me months ago and found the information you shared with me back then. Thank you for expanding on it here! I'm sure many would like hear more.
At this point, I can't choose the one I like best. Her interpretation of "Je Suis Malade" and "Caruso" are still kind of at the top for me, but so many others are excellent. This one among them, for sure.
I am not a Broadwayguy..not a musicalguy..But this gets me every time..There is something magic going on with Lara Fabian. I cant explain it in another way. She is magic. Thank you again for a splended reaction. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.❤🎉
Me neither. I mean, there are some musicals I like, but it's not my preferred genre. However, I agree, there is something magical about the way Lara delivers this. Greetings to Finland and Sweden! ❤❤❤
Yes Eric is right.. This is Broadway alive.. Voice.. Breath control, perfect pitch, exquisite texture, dynamic, belting, interpretation, stage presence (look how she fills all spaces she got, even running on heels) . Not even the great Barbra Streisand did ever perform both songs live without a pause.. 8 minutes of vocal technique and interpretation .. She is a navigate actress.. A wonderful full package of an artist. I would have loved to watch her parents expression that evening , how proud they were of their amazing daughter. ❤
That’s Lara “the-whole-package” Fabian, as I like to say... And to think that she did that in the middle of a two-hour long concert is highly impressive! 👸🏼
@Francesco71rm When is Eric ever wrong when it comes to Lara? 🤣 Your idea never occurred to me, but yes, it would have been great if we could get a glimpse into her parent's reaction to her performance. Then again, that might be too much to ask, as it's kind of personal for them... I'm sure we can all guess they must be immensely proud of her. ❤
❤❤❤ Ah, that was not a guess. Eric told me her father was in the audience. The guessing part was just how Lara must have felt about it. I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction and my greetings to Italy! ❤❤❤
Lara is very close to her family, as far as I know her father financed her first album and when his daughter decided to try the singing adventure towards Canada he gave her his life savings. Evidently they believed in her choices and the results proved them right (we have a problem, your daughter is a singer 🤣).
@57Gauloises57 Like Damian, I'd agree it's was a very safe investment to make. 🤣 It's obvious from her performance that she's either the greatest actor that ever lived or has a great connection with her family, including her dad, of course. ❤
Aleks, thank you for your insightful reaction to this masterpiece from Lara. For me, it is one of her best performances, and as you said, she wanted the best for her Dad. Please know that it is a joy to see you enraptured by Lara's performance including the epic ending. I thought your comments reflected the sensitivity Lara gave to her characterisation. Thanks to Eric and all who requested this. Phil in Scotland
Thank you so much, Phil! I am clearly not the only one who feels the emotions in Lara's performance. Your comment is a credit to her as well! Greetings to Scotland! ❤❤❤
Hi Aleks ❤ Thank you for this wonderful reaction to Lara ❤ Yes we like your comments to the video's ❤ That is why we are here ❤ Keep up the good work ❤ Excited to see what's next ❤ Love Lara ❤ Love from Denmark ❤
What a voice, what a singer, what a women . Barbara is Lara's idol . The whole concert ""PURE"" is a outstanding ... Between every song even a small joke .... The parents of Lara where in the audience. Because of the 30 years anniversery of the mariage of her parents she sang ""I will always love you"" from Dolly Parton in the version of Withny Houston .
Though I am listening to Lara one song at a time, this just leaves me the opportunity that once I am familiar with her entire opus, I can go back and listen to 3 different concerts in their entirety years from now. I'm patient, and it would be quite a beautiful reward for patience. 😊
Yes, another Lara reaction ❤, wonderful. Not a genre I listen much too, it is a bit too theatrical for me normally, but I still loved this. It hit me in the feels, and I sensed it did for you, too. I also had the best dad I could ever wish for. Your thoughtful reactions always amazes me. Lara sings like an angel, as always.
Thank you so much, Tolun! ❤ Interesting how a song can connect all of us who have/had wonderful dads. Regardless of where we're from, it's such a strong connection. Obviously, Lara's dad must have been a great one too, otherwise I don't think this performance would be so strong and heartfelt.
@@AleksReacts I suspect you are right, I can't imagine Lara grew up without great parents the way she carries herself. She has mentioned them on multiple occations. Then again, she could sing about a rock and make me cry, so there's that. 🤣
Dear Aleks, have I ever mentioned to you how much I appreciate that you post your videos during my lunch break? If not, I’m thanking you now from the bottom of my heart for it. 🤎 And when it happens to be a Lara’s video, it’s nothing short than a blessing. 🙌🏻 Anyway… First, I’m gonna pretend that I haven’t noticed those watering eyes of yours for your own sake… 😉 I’m so happy that you finally reacted to Lara’s Yentl. This one blows me away every single time I watch it. And I’m just going to say that Broadway’s loss that they have never had Lara there. She’s in such a trance during this whole performance… like she’s really possessed or something… 🤯 And is it just me, or that circling movement she does with her finger at the beginning to be the most adorable thing ever? Like she’s literally a “maestro” conducting her own phenomenal instrument, her voice. It was certainly a very special performance for Lara… As you mentioned her father was there and he was the one who first helped her in her career, taking her to gigs and all, which totes fits the storyline there.
Dear Raquel, the lunch break thing is accidental. UA-cam simply shows me when most subscribers are around to see the video. 😉 If you haven't had the time to hear the whole thing, please make sure you hear the final thoughts - I simply had to mention both you and Eric as without you guys I don't think the reaction would happen just the way it did.
Both of Lara's parents were in the audience during that concert. It was their 30 years wedding anniversary, and Lara performed for them Whitney Houston's iconic "I Will Always Love You" soundtrack from The Bodyguard movie during this concert. The song was performed as a surprise for her parents - it was not on the original concert tracks list to be sung. I heard many people say "nobody can sing that song as well as Whitney Houston does". Then came Lara, and said "Hold my beer".
I am a fan of Whitney Houston and even though it's Dolly's song, in my view Whitney did it better. Therefore, I have to hear Lara's interpretation of I Will Always Love You. @raquelra5878 also mentioned that the best one was during this concert, so I will be sure to listen to it.
Thank you Aleks for this beautiful reaction. This time you had a hard time hiding your emotions even if you managed to contain the excess of feeling by dissecting Lara's performance. Thanks again!
Thank you so much, Ildefonso! I try not to flaunt my emotions, not a big fan of that myself as it often seems fake. However, sometimes they do trickle in and can't be fully stopped. Apologies for that.
Hi. Lara was just in the verge to be this huge superstar she is today in those concerts 96-99. And this is definetely one of her best concerts. Despite the beginnings little off pitch she is just astounding here in this song. Her "acting" and face expressions not to mention her voice and vocals, are just superb. These songs are so hard to sing because there are some "unusual note travelling and scales" Not so much found in contemporary music. And that stage present and acting. I can say 100% sure if she was just once asked to do a number in Broadway, they never ever would have let her go. She is more than perfect in that field. Great pick to react Aleks!!! Thank you. (Thnx for Eric too). Cheers! TTKing (if anyone happens to be interested in my own next upload check this) ua-cam.com/video/fBFrIIFRdNE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUGdHRraW5n
🇨🇦 I'm not crying, you are ! 🤣 This is one of those that I would never dare to compare the two artists ! I have seen this a few times now, enjoyed it everytime, and you are correct to see the 'emotional' differences in this version ! As followers though, we get one added advantage to this reaction, and that is seeing the pure joy on your face, watching this ! Don't be making us wait so long next time ! 😜 🇨🇦
Well, I'm not. 😋 I dared compare them as the approach was different. Not sure if I would feel so comfortable if Barbra's performance was conceptually the same. Not to worry, Christmas is coming soon, so some of Lara's songs appropriate for the time of year will come up. Any you'd suggest?
I have yet to do so many more. Even for this time, I had 3 different songs in mind and only today decided on Yentl. It was even recorded only an hour before publishing. Lara is a long-term inspiration . 🥰
@raquelra5878 One of these days I'll have to have a serious conversation with you and Bruce. 🤣 Btw, soon, Lara's rendition of All I Want For Christmas Is You as you suggested will be published.
It's unlikely that I will do White Christmas as there are two more versions of that song on my list. I do want to cover all artists I've listened to this year rather than all songs... We'll see how it goes. On the plus side, I plan to listen to a lot of her new album songs after the holidays. ❤
❤❤❤ Lara can really make us feel very strong emotions when she sings. I agree that it is her greatest power, even though the power and control of her voice is amazing. Thank you so much, Rita! ❤❤❤
Aleks thank you, I've been waiting for you to do this one and your reaction and opinion never disappoints specially when it comes to Lara. I'll leave all the others to comment on this vocal masterpiece but I will tell you, if there is one thing Lara has always had, is absolute confidence in is her voice. From the first time I watched this video years ago, I thought at 10:58 on your video as she says "Watch me" the look on her face is one of complete confidence and determination as she so beautifully belts out "Fly"!🤩😍❤ Sort of like the star baseball player pointing to the part of the stadium it will go before he hits it out of the park. Like you there are certain performers that makes us beam with pride as we watch them and Lara is one of them!
Thank you so much, Jairo! I won't comment more on Lara's performance here as it's clear I find her to be perfect almost every time. So far, I believe only her Alfonsina y el mar did not hit me hard. I do have to ask something personal, as it's driving me nuts, but you are not obligated to answer me at all. Where does your name come from and what does it mean? I had to write it down so as not to forget it, as I have never heard it before. If you don't want to share it, feel free to simply pretend you never saw the question. 😉
@@AleksReacts 🤔Hmmm... succinct answer or the long play version. Let's go with the long version, so we came to the U.S. when I was 9 years old and I grew up in Southern California. People would always ask since it is such an uncommon name and I would always shrug off the answer as I did not know. I think I was in my 30's when I asked my father about it and his reply of one name being as good as another did not shed any light on it, furthermore the internet always gave these convoluted replies that never helped. I've never met another person that shares my name but an interesting thing happened when I moved to Houston TX where there is a large contingent of people from Colombia. After a few weeks I was coming across several people that pronounced it perfectly (ha e ro) instead of the usual (say gyroscope and drop the scope). Finally I was at a grocery store and as handed the cashier my credit card she looked at the name and started talking to me in Spanish pronouncing my name perfectly. I asked her how she knew the pronunciation and that I knew Spanish and her reply stunned me, you are from Bogota right? Yes I replied, how do you know? She said Jairo is a very common name there kind of like Bill or John here in the U.S. so it took me all those years and moving to Texas to know a bit more about the name😊
@@xerezjg52 Here you go… Jairo is my Grandfather’s name as well, but it’s not a so common name here. It happens to be a Hebrew name, actually… And it is biblical as well… The same goes to my name, Raquel. The name Jairo means something like: “It shines”…. according to my mother. My Grandpa’s family was Jewish, BTW… And I guess I don’t have to explain why they ended up here in Brazil.
@@raquelra5878 Thank you Raquel, I've heard Hebrew as well as Portuguese before and "it shines" comes up often in google searches as well. The first time I heard my name in the media was a long time ago when UCLA had a running back in their football team with the same name. Hope all is well in Brazil, I follow the Formula 1 circuit and this years race in São Paulo Sure was wet! So many great drivers from Brazil including the best, Senna!!
@ Yes… We had a really hard and “rainy” time this year in some regions… Things are getting better now…. at least I hope so… 🤞🏻And Hebrews have some intriguing meanings for names, mine means “meek as a female sheep”…. 🙄 I’m not quite sure if I agree with that… 😂
I was referring to "knocked it out of the auditorium". That does describe my sentiments exactly. 😉 Don't think I'm committing too much if I agree with that. 🤣
@AleksReacts She absolutely always puts so much of her heart and soul into every song, and the emotions, tears every time. I love your reactions, thank you.
This one is gorgeous, dear Dominik. Thank you for watching it!❤❤❤ It gave me a glimpse into her relationship with her parents. Obviously, very supportive and wonderful family, to say nothing more on her impeccable performance.
I don't really think Barbra's version is that cold, it's just that Lara's is more "open" in a way. Barbra's makes me think, Lara's makes me feel. Both excellent singers though.
OOooo Aleks, I can't wait to get home and watch this masterpiece! Thanks in advance for sharing! (Edited to confess that my fat fingers typed "sharting" and man am I glad I caught it. 🤣
@@AleksReacts Isn't this something to behold? I've seen the movie, and you're correct with your assumptions. I did have a strong connection to my pop, and yeah, Papa Can You Hear Me does bring a bit of emotions in that way. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts with us as always!
Thank you so much for taking a look and sharing your view! Yes, all of us who have/had strong connections to our dads can really feel every little bit of this performance. Such a lovely feeling, the way Lara delivers it. ❤
Wonderful reaction as always! - LOVED it - and I 100% agree - such an emotional performance... ...absolutely love it, and I have to admit, I love it even more than Barbra Streisand's original performances - simply stunning - and that end note!! (I must say though, that the original movie's ending note (which I'm assuming is simply Barbra, with no faked sustain / extension - is unbelievable! - must be close to 25-30 seconds long - you ought to watch even just that ending scene if you've never experienced it!) Thanks as always, love your takes on things, and your thoughts in your reactions - keep up the great work!
Thank you kindly, Denis! I have heard Barbra's version multiple times, the movie scene too, just haven't watched the entire movie yet. Barbra's has always had an amazing voice, but like you I think I like Lara's version better. Not 100% sure yet, I need to let it "settle". Thank you again for the complements! How could I not keep going with so many of you being so kind to me. ❤
Such a beautiful reaction, Aleks. This is a masterclass by Lara, no doubt. And not only in vocal delivery, as you mention. This kind of music; "Broadway style" is the PERFECT music for her IMO, where she can also let her theatrical skills blossom, without it feeling a bit too much. That has always been the one thing that has prevented me from falling completely for her as an artist. I think it was nice to see how she hit you again. She obviously has that effect on you 🙂 I have seen it before as well. Barbra's performance of this song has always been among my favorites by her, and I think I can hear and feel more than you do perhaps. That being said, I DO see what you mean as well. I kinda believe you when you said that you can talk for hours. But you know what? I really wouldn't mind. I know that I could learn a lot from you that way. Take care, Aleks 🙂 Love from The Sharkster ♥♥♥♥♥
Dear Sharkster, thank you so much for putting all that into words! I don't mind Lara's theatrical element to her performances, only because I don't feel it to be fake / acted out. It feels like it's natural to her, so she can immerse herself into the song. Maybe it starts off as acting and then she lets go and "becomes" the person in the song. It might also be because one of the first songs I heard was Je suis malade, and there is a moment there where she moves so uncontrollably that no sane person would do that on purpose while "acting". Her arm just flails about as if disembodied from her. So from then on, I believe her movements are just who she is. That also might explain her effect on me. It's as if her performing is simply honest and that is what gets to me the most - honesty. Please don't get me wrong when it comes to Barbra. I am a big fan of hers and though I felt more emotion from Lara, I do not think Barbra doesn't really show emotions. I just think that her sensibilities are different to mine, so she doesn't get to me so much with her Yentl medley. Her "Guilty" or "Woman In Love" can break me in two. You should believe I can talk for hours, it's been empirically proven. 🤣 Just look at how much I can type and that's much slower than talking. 🤣🤣🤣 It does work better in person though, because then people can actually quite justifiably tell me (and often do) to shut up. 😉 Thank you again and I do mean it every time when I say love to you and Norway! ❤❤❤

After her singing Love by Grace (which you commented a few weeks ago), this song must be like a kind of heavyweight song. A beautiful song originally by Barbra Streisand, Lara covered this song in an operatic way but with the deepest intimate feeling which is so touching. Indeed, I am deeply touched and really loved Lara's performance. I am a dad and have one daughter, this reminds me of her, and I could not help imagining her thinking something like what Lara brought in her amazing performance. Again, a thoughtful comments from you.
As a daughter of a really great dad, this performance was exactly my kind of lyrical magic. I really do think everything she sang here about my dad. Yes, parents sometimes drive us crazy, especially when we're teenagers, but most of my life my dad has been the person I go to for advice or an opinion. He "gets me". Love by Grace was pretty, but not even close to this one. However, there are several songs that I really LOVE by Lara and go back to often: Je suis malade, Caruso, Perdere l'Amore, Je t'aime, Tango and Quédate so far. Most of the others I've heard and reacted to are really good or even great, but these are the ones that I keep going back to and sing along to very loudly (you would not want to hear that, though 🤣)
@@AleksReacts Interesting, you think from a daughter perspective, while I am from a father. I have a great daughter which is so independent, but we talk from time to time on a lot of things, and both of us appreciate it. That's I guess why this song, and of course the way Lara presents it, makes it so relatable. Agree, all those songs by Lara you mentioned I also like them ... and also so many others that you did not mentioned and you have not reviewed in youtube.
I am yet to hear more by Lara, so this is just the selection from the ones I have heard. I haven't listened to anything else intentionally, as I do want to do reviews of her songs and share my Lara journey with people who seem to enjoy it with me. I'm sure my list will grow as I keep going. No need to keep repeating that we both very much understand a healthy and beautiful father-daughter bond, each from our own perspective. ❤
One of my favorite live performance from Lara if not the One, hard to choose , tho I must admit Barbara Streisand did not move me a single bit with hers, oooops.
OMG, and I'm not close to even half way through her old stuff... Please tell me there's a Christmas song on it, so I can react to one more of hers soon.
@ I’ve already given you a scoop for a Lara’s Christmas celebration. Her version of “White Christmas” is defo a beautiful one. You can also do “Amazing Grace” as well… About the new album, I’m as curious as you, but I’m afraid there won’t be Christmas songs… Lara had already stated once that she wouldn’t ever do a Christmas album… 🤷🏻♀️
White Christmas is on the "production" list for Christmas, and thank you for Amazing Grace. I need more Christmas songs as this year I'm trying to do 4 weeks (2 before the Catholic Christmas and 2 before the Orthodox one) and it's not easy to find Christmas songs or at least performances of Christmas songs I haven't heard. 🤣 Thankfully, there's Pentatonix and Lucy Thomas, but most of the other artists I've been listening to don't seem to have performed them...
OMG, how much I love these "Yentl" songs and how much I love Michel Legrand, the man behind some of the most beautiful melodies in cinema ("Yentl," "Les parapluies de Cherbourg", "Peau d'âne", "Les demoiselles de Rochefort"). This eternal lover, who left us five years ago, had several women in his life, from models to musicians, a great love with the actress Macha Méril, and many muses among female singers, starting with Nana Mouskouri ( ua-cam.com/video/udJ6JHUD31c/v-deo.html ). Regarding "Yentl," his second great platonic and musical love, immediately after Barbra Streisand, was Regine Velasquez, known as the Songbird in the Philippines ( ua-cam.com/video/Ed5zev0ZFk4/v-deo.html ). From their very first meeting, Michel declared, "After she sang the first note, I thought to myself : She’s the one for me !" Natalie Dessay and Shirel also received Michel’s praise for their interpretations of "Yentl," but in my opinion, they remain far below Barbra and Regine. And so, here we are with Lara. I love Lara, no need to say it again, and her "Yentl" is undeniably moving and powerful, but… But let’s not forget that Yentl is a character who suffers from her lack of femininity and ends up disguising herself as a man in order to access the hidden knowledge of Judaism’s sacred texts. Yentl is, above all, steeped in Jewish mysticism and seeks to free herself from its rules. Despite her filial attachment, she's not at all a little girl caught in patriarchal dependence on her father (she's a "boy" and, BTW, the original title of the novel is "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy"). So, singing "Papa" with Lara’s intimate tone, although very moving for the little girl who still lives in every woman, doesn't align with the character. The goal of Yentl - actually the central theme of the whole film - is freedom, to set herself free in the spiritual sense intended by the novel's author, freed from earthly appearances. "Papa, watch me fly". She flies in the sky (in its mystical sense). Not at all like Lara, who, at the end of the song, collapses on the stage, completely crushed by gravity. In short, Lara admirably sang the story of Lara and her father (and that's her total right). But she did not sing Yentl. So I still prefer Barbra as the one, the true Yentl of the novel and the film ( ua-cam.com/video/faRFVdrRpws/v-deo.html ). Well... maybe it’s because I’m not a little girl ?
An interesting take, but I do believe it might really be because you're not a little girl. As a little girl, who's very much her father's daughter, I will share my personal view based on experience. I do not think Yentl suffers from lack of femininity at all. If she suffers from anything, it's from being overly independent and curious. Even Barbra said in her live Yentl medley that Yentl had no choice but to disguise herself as a boy, so she can keep learning instead being married off like most women at that time were. She actually gets Avigdor's love, but she chooses to leave rather than become "just a wife". She had a choice: a man she's in love with or herself. She chose herself. If she could have chosen both, I'm sure she would have. With education and emancipation comes a slight issue for most women of today. By the time they finish University, get a job and financial stability they are in their late 30s and start rushing to form a family that they are often biologically conditioned to have. Some "escape" the biological clock and live their lives like Yentl - free of constraints to whatever outcome really suits them. Some women's biological clock doesn't entirely cloud their judgement and they don't settle for any man just to form a family, but it doesn't mean they are less feminine. They are simply not conditioned to settle, but marry only if they actually love a particular man, have children only if they want to not because their hormones tell them to, etc. It doesn't mean they will not have a husband and a family. It simply means they will not be constrained by it. In Yentl's time, they would have been "captured in the cage of marriage" if they married and no further interests would be available to them. So unlike some women of today, who can have both, Yentl had to choose. Her father is important because he is the one who gave her the opportunity of choice by teaching her what was forbidden to girls, which many fathers at that time wouldn't. I do not think there was anything spiritual about her flying, it was very physical and real - she flew across the ocean to find freedom to potentially choose both. Doesn't mean she wasn't crushed by having to make that choice. Quite the opposite, she probably was, but simply had the strength to defy "gravity" and still "fly". My parents, especially my father, did the same for me. No one expected of me to be married or unmarried. They expected me to learn more, remain curious, think critically, they allowed me to find out who I am. Turns out I am a married woman happy in her choice of husband and everything else in my life. Still quite feminine, just not burdened by being a little girl. 😉 Like Yentl, if I had to choose between a man I am in love with and my freedom to be who I want to be, I would be crushed, but I would choose myself and I wouldn't allow the world to see that I am crushed at all. I'd focus on what may yet come. That's why even Barbra asks her very understanding father "(papa) do you understand me" and knows "though it's safer to stay on the ground", remembers "no matter where I go there'll be memories that tug at my sleeve" and she is still searching for a man who isn't going to "bury her" in marriage like Avigdor probably would. Finally, she says "with all there is, why settle for just a piece of sky" when she can have it all - the right man and her freedom. It's simply that though she loved Avigdor he couldn't love her the way she wanted to be loved, allowing her freedom as well. I'm only trying to share the view from a perspective of a woman who's very similar to Yentl in many ways. We may be crushed by emotions, and still stand up anyway and look for more in life. The truth is strong people (both men and women) don't really care what society thinks, even though they still have feelings that can be hurt or have to navigate "the society". That strength is often easier to achieve when you father and mother "teach" you to be strong, like Yentl's father did. Hence the title of this reaction.
@@AleksReacts I will remain for eternity (minus one day) fascinated by the absolutely miraculous power of art (and sacred or mythological texts) to be interpreted in countless ways. I suppose you know that Yentl is also a cult film for gay and trans communities, who see Yentl’s disguises as a support for their cause. The feminist interpretation is, of course, the most common. There is no doubt, as well, the screenwriters, dialogue writers, director and actors of the film (including Barbra herself) each had their personal vision of who Yentl is (and, I repeat, it is their right, and even their duty to do so). But, but, but... But this character does, after all, have an origin. And what I was sharing with you was not merely my personal opinion, but the original reality of this character and her context. The author of Yentl is not exactly just anyone. Isaac Singer, Nobel Prize laureate in literature and a major figure in Yiddish literature, came from a Hasidic family and grew up immersed in the religious traditions of Jewish mysticism. In his works, he constantly explored Kabbalistic themes : the struggle between good and evil, the spiritual quest and the search for freedom. And he often transformed traditional Hasidic tales into philosophical or spiritual novels. Yentl was, of course, no exception. In an interview, Singer explicitly stated that Yentl "should not be perceived as a social critique or a feminist manifesto, but as an exploration of the quest for spiritual truth and individual freedom." According to him, her story "illustrates a spiritual aspiration that transcends mere earthly concerns." We can, therefore, see Yentl’s story as a quest for esoteric knowledge that transcends the boundaries of gender or social conventions, a conflict between the soul and appearances, and, above all, as an ode to individual freedom, a value that Singer, as a spiritual thinker, cherished deeply beyond his tradition, much like Krishnamurti rose above Hinduism, or Jakob Böhme beyond Christianity. Now, Yentl's sense of lacking femininity is subtly revealed in the film through her admiration for Hadass, Avigdor's fiancée, whom she perceives as embodying a far greater femininity, so much so that she feels incapable of competing with her. In the novel, this idea is taken even further, as Yentl forms a much more intimate bond with Hadass after the latter’s separation from Avigdor. However, this should be understood as purely allegorical, for in Jewish mysticism, the union of the masculine and feminine principles is regarded as the ultimate expression of spiritual ascension. One final quote from Singer perfectly tells us who Yentl is as a character : “Yentl seeks more than love or knowledge. She seeks a truth that can elevate her beyond the constraints of the physical world.”
I was actually sitting around waiting for you reply! Wanted to hear more and see why you'd hold that view. I did not realize you were sharing fact rather than personal opinion. Thank you so much for giving me the background story on the movie. I merely read the synopsis, which clearly isn't enough. No wonder I didn't interpret it the way Isaac Singer intended, for I am neither Jewish nor religious in general. Additionally, I did not read the novel. I now see what you mean, to an extent. I'm sure I'd need to know a lot more about more than one religion to grasp the concept in its entirety and possible would need to understand Singer's entire point of view on life, not just a single work of his. Then again, I AM woman, so my view is similar to what the "feminist view" seems to be. I should emphasize though that I am not a hard core feminist either. Mainly because I don't think women can do everything men can and vice versa. Not to mention that I don't WANT to carry my own suitcases (even if they are light) or move furniture around if I don't have to. 🤣 Of course, some excellent improvements did come out of the original feminist movement, but everything in my view is good in moderation, even spirituality. Overdo it, and off the cliff things go... Thank you once again, I very much appreciate you sharing this insight with me.
@@AleksReacts Aha, in the Bible, God says "I spit out the lukewarm." So, moderation is not part of spirituality. That said, personally, I keep my distance from all religions or, more precisely, from religiosity which to me seems like a mental illness, as opposed to spirituality which involves investigating our own consciousness in order to gain clarity within. But that is something each of us does or doesn’t do at our own pace and in our own way, without any intervention from any clerical institution whatsoever.
Aha, that explains even more why I'm not religious. Also, why I don't like my food neither hot nor cold (unless it's ice cream). 🤣 I wouldn't go so far as to say that religiosity is a mental illness. I see it more as a coping mechanism that simply works for some people. We're complex beings, so there's often an explanation for all kinds of what's perceived as crazy. On the other hand, some people really are mentally ill and religious/atheist at the same time... For me any kind of fervor is overdoing it, but that's just me. 😉 I also think going to the gym 7x a week or playing video games 18 hours a day is overdoing it, but people do it...
With all due respect to Barbra I have to say I like this version better It's flawless and loaded with emotion, as per usual with Lara I'm not sure she dressed in white because of this song, the entire concert she wears the same clothes I think. But who knows. BTW I understand it was her first big concert recorded, there she also did covers of Mariah Carey and Whitney, in addition with her french songs, it's really impressive
Thank you, Damian! I do like Barbra and respect her. I also keep going back and forth on what I think about each version. Lara's is more emotional for sure, but there is also great merit in Barbra's. I might like Lara's more. I'll let it settle a bit. I did not know she wore the suit throughout the concert, but it's a nice coincidence if it wasn't intentional. I was told she did Whitney's I Will Always Love You. What covers did she do of Mariah's songs?
@AleksReacts yeah in the end it's about preference, I like you had not seen the movie and only watched Barbra live performance of the medley after watching Lara so I'm not that connected to the original. But it's also great of course. The cover of Mariah was Vision of Love 😊
I understand completely, we're literally in the "same boat" on this one. 😊 Thank you for the cover song, I wanted to check that out as well. Not a big fan of Mariah (something about her personality just rubs me the wrong way), but some of her songs were really good and I can't deny she has a great voice.
And now I hope you don’t get mad at me, Aleks… 🫣 but I’m gonna leave a second comment here, as I think I’ve never suggested these four French classics performed by Lara to you. Shame on me, bc they’re all so very beautiful and, although I’d really like you to add them to your spreadsheet, I know it is already too full… So, I’m really not expecting you to do it, but… hey, you can always go just watch them privately eventually. Besides, I’m sharing the list not only with you, since my main goal is to always promote my beloved Lara and her talent, and these are sort of hidden gems that I’ve never seen anyone reacting to, so I guess some people here, who are only now discovering her, would possibly want to check them out: - Le Blues du Businessman (Gosh… Lara in a suit is something else… She looks, and sounds, so effortlessly glorious here) ua-cam.com/video/22zYsMCl7v0/v-deo.htmlsi=hbSpABI8kMw_vIWw - Le Hymme à L’amour (Gorgeous version) ua-cam.com/video/tqFdsEdwmMM/v-deo.htmlsi=Yu_bI8lKZJWdiz8y - Gottingen (Love it!) ua-cam.com/video/Ne4cBSdaOD8/v-deo.htmlsi=coup7IHYTG-Oswqe - Quand on n’a que L’amour (Acoustic and so delicate) ua-cam.com/video/rW7iusDbYjY/v-deo.htmlsi=NlxNQtX-KMPcy3xD
Why would I get mad at you? I agree that great artists should be promoted. Also, they weren't on the list, so I've added them all. My responses may be shorter, but the ❤❤❤ are still there for a reason.
I've added 2 of them to my list of "Lara extra performances" so thank you 😊 Amazing the amount of stuff she has done besides her albums and regular shows
@ Always glad to oblige! 🤗 And, yes, Lara has presented us with a lot of gifts through her career… Here’s another one that you might haven’t seen for you to add to your list. It’s a satire song made as an homage to a comedian/author, I think… She looks absolutely gorgeous here, BTW. ua-cam.com/video/eDmO_23Kaco/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Hi ! I love your videos and I would like to know if it's possible that you react to the her new album ? It is AMAZING, I really love it and I think you will too ! Thank you !! 💖
Thank you so much! Yes, it is and I will. But it will be mixed with some of her older performances and one song at a time... I want to hear her new work as much as any of her fans. ❤❤❤

I understand her completely. 🤣 Who'd believe Barbra Streisand is calling them. Glad that Barbra didn't give up. I understand she did cover Broken Vow later on, right? Can't find it on UA-cam though... Also, I really like Lara's self-deprecating humor (blonde singer). 😋 As I do plan to react to You're Not From Here, I'll watch the other one when I do that. Hope you don't mind. 😉

I lost my dad when I was 3 years old, the way Lara she says "PAPA" always get me in tears and still pierces my heart. Lara is an angel from another world ❤
I am so sorry to hear that. My dad is thankfully still with me and I feel this song deeply. I cannot imagine how it must feel for you... ❤️❤️❤️
Lara Fabian owns a place in this world even in this universe that is unbelievably unique and beautiful.
True.
You perfectly understood the performance and reacted to it as any humane person would react to it, thank you!
Thank you so much! It's all Lara's "fault", as she emotes rather than just sings. The more I listen to her, the more I like her style of performing.
Eric , rightly strikes again . Merci
My kingdom for a clean, high quality version of this phenomenal performance! It always makes me teary eyed.
I don't even mind the quality. The performance is still gorgeous. 😊
Her best performance ever to my humble opinion

@raquelra5878 ☺️👌exactly

Hello my lovely Aleks, so happy to see you react to this. You picked up on such minute details and it was a great reaction. Thank you much love x
Thank you kindly, Anne! It's just a bit of focus and really caring about the performance... Love ❤
Ah, that was not a guess. Eric told me her father was in the audience. The guessing part was just how Lara must have felt about it. I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction and my greetings to Italy! ❤❤❤
@@AleksReacts Ciao, SÌ è sempre un piacere vedere i tuoi video. 👋
Grazie mille! ❤❤❤
Lara is very close to her family, as far as I know her father financed her first album and when his daughter decided to try the singing adventure towards Canada he gave her his life savings. Evidently they believed in her choices and the results proved them right (we have a problem, your daughter is a singer 🤣).
Can you imagine having such a singer as a daughter? That must have been the easiest investment ever lol

Thank you. Hope all is well in Brazil, I follow the Formula 1 circuit and this years race in São Paulo Sure was wet! So many great drivers from Brazil including the best, Senna!!

Perfect performance ❤
True. ❤
As much as I love Barbara, I grew up listening to her an didn't think anyone could compare. But for me Lara just knocked it out of the auditorium.
My sentiments exactly! 😊

Thank you for watching it!❤❤❤
It gave me a glimpse into her relationship with her parents. Obviously, very supportive and wonderful family, to say nothing more on her impeccable performance.
Far more emotional and nuanced than the cold Barbara ‘version . Aand always that perfect diction while singing.
I look forward to your feedback on it as well. No rush, take your time, and enjoy . ❤️

- must be close to 25-30 seconds long - you ought to watch even just that ending scene if you've never experienced it!)
Thanks as always, love your takes on things, and your thoughts in your reactions - keep up the great work!
Take care, Aleks 🙂
Love from The Sharkster ♥♥♥♥♥
Thank you again and I do mean it every time when I say love to you and Norway!

One of my favorite live performance from Lara if not the One, hard to choose , tho
I must admit Barbara Streisand did not move me a single bit with hers, oooops.
Emotionally, this one is stronger in my view as well.

I came back here just to remind everyone that tomorrow is THE DAY!!! New Lara’s album is coming!!! I’m so excited! 🤩
OMG, and I'm not close to even half way through her old stuff... Please tell me there's a Christmas song on it, so I can react to one more of hers soon.
@ I’m afraid that list under my name will grow soon enough… 😂
Yes i can hardly wait for the new Album but it must be very stressful for Lara, all these interviews and performances🥹
I love Lara, no need to say it again, and her "Yentl" is undeniably moving and powerful, but…
But let’s not forget that Yentl is a character who suffers from her lack of femininity and ends up disguising herself as a man in order to access the hidden knowledge of Judaism’s sacred texts.
Like Yentl, if I had to choose between a man I am in love with and my freedom to be who I want to be, I would be crushed, but I would choose myself and I wouldn't allow the world to see that I am crushed at all.
@@AleksReacts
I will remain for eternity (minus one day) fascinated by the absolutely miraculous power of art (and sacred or mythological texts) to be interpreted in countless ways.
In an interview, Singer explicitly stated that Yentl "should not be perceived as a social critique or a feminist manifesto, but as an exploration of the quest for spiritual truth and individual freedom." According to him, her story "illustrates a spiritual aspiration that transcends mere earthly concerns."
We can, therefore, see Yentl’s story as a quest for esoteric knowledge that transcends the boundaries of gender or social conventions, a conflict between the soul and appearances, and, above all, as an ode to individual freedom, a value that Singer, as a spiritual thinker, cherished deeply beyond his tradition, much like Krishnamurti rose above Hinduism, or Jakob Böhme beyond Christianity.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that religiosity is a mental illness.
With all due respect to Barbra I have to say I like this version better
It's flawless and loaded with emotion, as per usual with Lara
I'm not sure she dressed in white because of this song, the entire concert she wears the same clothes I think.
