    👨🏽‍🦲ABOUT ME
It's your man, Jeff Thornton, and I'm ready to take you on a journey through my life!
I was born on Holloman Air Force Base, NM, and raised in the beautiful city of Alamogordo, NM.
Growing up as the youngest of six kids, you'd think I'd have it easy, right?
    WRONG.
My siblings were always keeping me on my toes, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Family has always been my number one priority, and I owe that to my parents, Captain Robert and Dina Thornton, for instilling those values in me from a young age.
Now, let's talk about my love for sports.
From football to hockey, I've always been a natural athlete.
I was even the “Team Captain” for my high school football team, which I'm still proud of to this day.
But let's be real, sports are great and all, but nothing compares to the rush of being transported to a whole new world through video games.
When I was three years old, my sisters and I decided to be helpful and clean our brothers' Nintendo console.
Sounds like a good idea, right
    Well, we used WATER.
Needless to say, we destroyed the whole thing.
But that moment taught me something invaluable - gaming is more than just playing a game, it's about bonding with your loved ones over a shared experience.
Video games have been a constant throughout my life, bringing my family together and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
And that's why I'm still a gamer to this day.
It's not just about playing a character in a digital world, it's about the relationships and the community that gaming creates.
So, to all the gamers out there, let's embrace our inner nerd and never let go of that youthful spirit that makes us who we are.
Thanks for tuning in, and much love to you!

Loving the NFL and Rugby it always causes me to scratch my head why the NFL is resistant to real turf. In Rugby i think we see less ACL, MCL tears by a huge margin than the NFL and the research suggests that its due to real grass as it gives way more easily when a player turns awkwardly. Hopefully as the NFL stadiums hosting rugby world cup games in 2031 have to have real turf the nfl owners might opt to keep it due to installation costs
Edit:- Just to clarify i know most pitches have synthetic woven within it though it is still predominantly at least around 80% turf and needs to be for scrums

Having played at Edinburgh once and Scotstoun once, the fields are hybrid, they're not quite the same as real turf, every now and then you notice it feels sort of different but you're mostly too focused on the game to notice. They're much better than playing on proper artificial turf which you definitely notice but in my opinion regular grass is just much better obviously you can't blame Glasgow or Edinburgh for just wanting a reliable surface to play on

On the Dragons Vs Leinster red at 5:00 minutes in. The issue is that the tackling player has not made a legal attempt to tackle. The arm is chicken winged, he leads with the elbow and catches him in the head.
As the tackler you must make an attempt to wrap your arms around the player you are tackling below the shoulder line.
In that clip as the referee explained, there was no attempt to wrap, he was caught in the head and therefore no mitigation can be applied. That means it has to be a red card. If he had wrapped him then he could have gotten away with a yellow card.

When you spoke at the end about dangerous tackles in the NFL. Rugby has been making an effort recently to clean up its act on this.
Some would argue that is goes to far in the wrong direction. All too often we are seeing red cards for what can only be described as accidental head contact, eg a clash of heads when a player steps to evade and the tackler can’t adjust his height.
The rules would have that as a red card. It’s been a lot better since the World Cup last year but we still have a long way to go.
The tackle laws can be very confusing , especially when foul play is involved:
If you can, find highlights of France vs South Africa from the Rugby World Cup in 2023. Quarter final and one of the best games of the whole tournament. Drama from start to finish.

    • @QSNgg
      @QSNgg  6 місяців тому +2

Yeah it's very tough to implement rules when it comes to tackling that fit all situations perfectly.
The plays happen so quickly and like you mentioned the sudden change of height happens in a split second causing a body tackle to end up being a head shot.
I'm 100% going to check out the France vs SA World Cup game. Thanks so much for letting me know 🙌🏽

The Duncan McRae one (where he's just throwing repeated sucker punches to the downed opponent) is a very 'old school' kind of thing. The British and Irish Lions (a scratch team of the best English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish players) tour once every four years, going to either South Africa, Australia or New Zealand, and so they will play club sides and invitational sides to get the team chemistry before playing the international team in a series. It's if anything more special for the teams visited because they only play the Lions every 12 years as a result.
Back in the old days, sometimes the club teams might be tasked with roughing up a few of the Lions players a bit, to affect their preparation, to try to push the selection in a way that the host team wanted, or just to make them more tired or hurt when it came to the main series. As a result, often if they felt there was some head-hunting going on, the Lions would fight fire with fire leading to some bad blood and bad-tempered matches that would incite a bit of hate for the visitors and make the upcoming series more heated. That kind of thing was largely phased out of the game by the early 2000s when this particular incident took place, but that history contributed to the bad blood in the game, culminating in McRae flying off the handle, and also why he looks pretty pleased with himself as he takes the red card. He felt a lot more regretful when he got suspended for two months.
The worst that I've seen is Calum Clark intentionally breaking Rob Hawkins' arm by hyperextending it kimura-style after the whistle when they were in a ruck. He got banned for eight months, the original request was for five years because they decided that while he had intended to injure Hawkins, fully breaking his arm had not been his intent. Clark also had some previous disciplinary issues that had factored into it.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain the background of the British and Irish Lions. It's always great to have some context and understand the history behind certain events in sports.
Hearing about the Calum Clark event sounds insane. That type of foul is very uncalled for and deserved the full 5 year ban. To inflict that type of damage on another player outside the rules of the game is ridiculous.

On the one you said ‘I don’t know’, the law states you have to attempt to wrap your arms around the player while tackling, if your not wrapping your illegally tackling or ‘barging’ and it can get very dangerous, I actually lost a mate due to a barge to his head and he had a brain bleed.

The default position for contact with the head is foul play. In tackles contact must be shoulder or below. It can be mitigated down if the player is falling or if there is a significant change in direction and the tackling player is attempting and in a position to make a legal tackle. That's while you'll see some reds and some yellows for what seems like similar actions. Anything like punches or deliberate actions like that are usually deemed automatic reds, but little pushing and squaring up is generally a warning to behave. Also when a red is given, they are sent to a disciplinary panel after the game which will determine the length of any ban.

    Gloucester Qrew!! Nailed it 🤣
I think, when it comes to severe knee injuries in the NFL, the main difference between the two sports is the tackling technique. In rugby union, if you don't make an attempt to wrap your arms around the ball carrier, it is foul play, whereas in the NFL there is much less "tackling" and more throwing oneself at the runner to break his stride or flat out knock him down. Add to that the likelihood of the defender coming from a blind spot, and the restrictions now imposed upon them to hit low, no wonder there are so many catastrophic knee injuries in the NFL. Both sports have clearly been contributing to major brain trauma in its players for a long while, and are rightly trying to reduce the impact of the collisions on the long term mental physiology of its players. I think the more structured nature of the defensive line in rugby makes that goal easier to achieve in rugby, at least without trading the cumulative damage of the collisions for another equally debilitating injury, like we are seeing in the NFL currently.
Great video again, I really enjoy your enthusiasm for learning the sport we love. Check out Shane Williams' back catalogue of tries, and Courtney Lawes' back catalogue of big hits. You won't be disappointed 😉

In Rugby, any sort of Head contact is treated as a red Card initially. Then the officials decide on wether there is any mitigation which downgrades the Card to a yellow. Might seem weird in some situations but it has done a lot for player safety

    • @ryanberelowitz7464
      @ryanberelowitz7464 6 місяців тому +1

That's not true. For head contact to start at a red card it needs to have a High degree of danger. Then we can talk mitigation. Go lookup the head contact process, there are a few diagrams which will explain the decision process.

I massively agree with what you said at the end. What the NFL should do, in my opinion, is let you properly tackle through them. Come on with the shoulder. Doing then, the hits would more commonly go through the chest or the pelvic area, which would massively reduce the risk of a major knee i jury like you said. A lot of the other stuff in rugby is protecting against injuries that wouldn't happen in the NFL due to all the padding, like concussions or broken collar-bones for example.
Also love what your doing with all the rugby man, its interesting getting an Americans thoughts, as a total rugby nerd. Thanks!

Another one for your viewing pleasure.
This game has special significance for me because I was there in the stadium. To this day I can’t watch the highlights without getting emotional.
It is without a doubt one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Rugby World Cup and arguably rugby in general. A game that went right to the wire with the clock in the red.
South Africa were two time winners of the World Cup going into this and Japan had only ever won one game in the World Cup before this game.
    I hope you enjoy it.
Not worthy tidbit, one of the Japanese coaches is now the head coach for the current England team.

Hi there! I really love how you've taken rugby on as a sport to learn and love. Your comments and observations in this video are very astute and well-made. It speaks to a good sportsman, who can put himself in the players' position while still understanding the passion of competition and the mindset of a professional player. I hope you'll continue to delve into Rugby Union, maybe pick yourself an English team to support?! :-) x

There is a rule in rugby whereby you aren't allowed to tackle a player in the air.
If a player jumps to catch a ball you can't tackle him until he comes down to the ground.
This results in some players who are looking up at the ball running into the legs of the jumping player, then the player who ran into the jumping player's legs getting a red card.
I think they should remove this rule, the player who is jumping didn't have to jump, he chose to jump to increase his chance at competing for the ball, but he raised his own risk of injury.
If the jumping player did not jump, there would be no risk of injury and he still has a chance at catching the ball.

Crazy comment about removing the “no tackle on player in air” Obviously never thought about lineouts as well.
There’s nothing wrong with competing for a ball. Any player who chooses to tackle anyone in the air deserves a card!

Thanks for letting me know the rule about jumping and not allowing a tackle. I was wondering if there was protection in place when they leave their feet
I think it's cool Rugby protects their players and keeps the game safe.
If they did change the jumping rule it would definitely change the dynamic of the game.
I'm sure there would be a lot of pushback though

    • @jjobeyy
      @jjobeyy 6 місяців тому

@@QSNgg Yeah if players weren’t allowed to jump for it, everyone would kick extremely shallow and high, allowing tacklers to smash someone the second they caught and have a better chance of turning it over in a counter ruck with the forward momentum

Here’s a highlight package from what most consider the best game of the World Cup in 2023.
For context France are playing this quarter final in front of their own fans in Paris.
The French captain, wearing number 9 had his jaw broken three weeks prior to this game.
South Africa are the defending champions from 2019.
The French are considered the favorites for the tournament and at the time this game was played were ranked number 2 in the world. South Africa were number 3.
