- The title says it all: 2019 Aprilia Tuono Factory Special Edition Summit Attack/Pikes Peak. Purchased December 2021 w 5,400 miles. Now 3 years later with 27,500 I have ridden this bike extensively. I love the Tuono sooo much, but it has not been without its drama at times. If you're thinking about one of these, grab a snack get comfy and check this out.
And as always a big thanks to my guys at @SoutheastMotorcycle for keeping this special machine in top shape

Literally, every single engine related issue I've seen with the aprilia v4s in India (almost half that have been sold have blown their engines over the last 10 years...) have ALL been related to owner's ripping them and not respecting the valve check interval. It's a VERY tight engine, especially 2015 onwards. My understanding is that it's prudent to do at least the first valve check within the 10k kms/6250 miles period, and then do it every 15k kms / 9k miles.
The platform has a few recurring electrical design issues that are surprisingly easily fixed, mostly to do with hot starts.
Loved your video. You're bang on. There's nothing else like the aprilia v4. And there's no better magician than Gabro.
I have a 2014 factory that was rescued by my friend. The bike had done less than 600 miles. He did all the essential restoration (injectors, rat damage) and I bought it from him and refreshed all the consumable / moving / rubber parts. And the bike is just SUBLIME. Did the airbox + gabro mod. There are way faster bikes around, but even my humble old bike makes SO much power that my brain melts every time I ride it.
Man, what an awesome comment! I really appreciate talking to other Aprilia owners that understand what the thing actually is. It’s a brilliant creation, but it’s not for the uninitiated or uninspired. I think the people that appreciate this machine are a special breed ofrider… The kind of people I like to be around!
@Antmanmoto oh yea man, it's definitely an advanced precise tool for advanced discerning riders. I'm not an advanced rider by any means, but this bike definitely has taught me the importance of deploying your fine motor skills and riding technique. And when you do get it right she rewards you. That said, man, if you're not in the zone, you better have the wisdom to say "take it easy" to yourself. Otherwise it gets real dodgy real quick 😅😅
@Antmanmoto and I totally agree with the special breed of aprilia owners. I think all of us who appreciate these v4s for what they are, are truly a special breed. The community was genuinely a special draw for me. Such great people ❤️❤️
The long-awaited video has dropped! Thanks for the thorough, honest review. Nicely done.
Long-term owner reviews are my favorite because it gives a true perspective into product ownership. Some of your videos, in fact, helped inspire some of the mods done to my Tuono.
In terms of rearsets, I highly recommend Giamoto. I've used them for years between my prior RSV4 and now Tuono and between their form and function, I love them.
Thank you for watching. People always worry about this bike but if you know the crucial elements which is really just one thing….valve checks, you will have minimal to no problems. Giamoto… OK I will look at those. I would be doing it strictly for looks as my rear sets have never touched the ground or track surface. But I’m sure they look amazing! 🤩👍🏽
As usual, another great and informative video! I am not currently willing to give up my touring bike, but I can see getting a "fun" bike in my future.
What a great video! I'm at 16k on my 2020 Tuono 1100RR and loving every bit of it! Thanks for all the vids you do!
Glad you are enjoying yours as much as I am enjoying mine! It can be a trouble free experience if you know what to do and when to do it.
Gorgeous bike! Love that Cracken sound! Great tribute, Godspeed #5 ✝
It is a beast! Thanks, man! 👍🏽
You prob don't remember but we talked awhile back about you coming out to Socal (before you came out and rode Saiyon's bike) and I was saying that I was probably going to buy an RSV4 soon, well I pulled the trigger in April on a 23 RSV4 in the black/red Sachsenring color way (our bikes look similar). Absolutely in love with this bike. I have the Gabro tq map, rearsets, levers, windscreen, fender delete, Competition werks shorty exhaust in all black, 520 conversion, etc... looking at those same wheels on the AF1 site for 2k, I'm prob going that route instead of Rotobox CF Bullet wheels for 4500.00, we'll see. But yeah brotha good to see another great vid. Maybe I'll catch you next time you come back to Socal. Stay up, be well.
Congrats on the purchase. Yeah that RSV4 with Shorty exhaust and tune is like moto ecstasy! You’ve gotta love those snarls and pops! These bikes have so much character… But they are not for the faint of heart. That thing is an absolute flamethrower! Awesome to hear! I will be out in California next week Monday, November 4 for a week… I’ll be on a bike riding the canyons
27k!!!!!! lets gooo! I've just gotten to 12k on my 2019 (bought with 1200 in mid 2022) so far it's been a reliable as hell bike, still as fun to ride as the first day I got it.
Define reliable? Because aprilia owners have a habit of saying some goofy nonsense like "yeah my bike's made it to 12k miles and has been super reliable despite leaving me stranded 3 times, oil leaks, electronics not working, and catching on fire."
@@DB-sd3cw Never been stranded, no electronic issues, replaced clutch side gasket when I saw it weeping.
Its got a full Ak exhaust with a been tune.
Oil changed w/ 300V every 4k miles (rec is 6) and I count every track day as 1k miles for maintenance. Bike has only seen maybe 10 track days, I run R6 normally for that.
The 2010 V4 was an absolute mess, since then Apes have been fine, with the exception of the 17 (I think) that had a recall for oil leak from the case seam
Like any bike, some people have issues, and V4 issues make great clickbait, but my immediate circle that has aprilia V4s (either rsv4 or tuono) haven't had ANY issues that warrant the reputation, both on and off track.
My girlfriends '23 streetfighter V4 on the other hand..... I feel like I should make one of those clickbait videos about it. Neither bike should be an "only" bike IMO though, if something goes bad, the wait on parts is BRUTAL, a buddy had his rsv4 in the shop for 6 months just waiting on parts after he looped it, any Jap bike would have been fixed in 3 weeks.
@canopyjunkie thanks for giving a legit answer without getting defensive, cheers man 🤙
I would agree with what he said. The main thing with today is how you are using it. Like I said in the video, if you are tracking it, you have to do more frequent checks. But if you’re touring or commuting it, it’s a very reliable bike now. I was picking the brains of every Ape mechanic I could when I was deciding what to do with my bike, and one of the lead mechanics at a shop in Los Angeles has a 2018 Factory with like 50,000 miles on it….he said he had not had one problem doing just regular oil changes and valve checks
Beautiful Bike!
Thank you, It's an amazing machine!
I love the bike, and for the price, its the bargain of the century. My qualms with it are the issue with the valves, which is fairly common, and at some point they tend to leak oil. Mine did with only 7000 miles on it in less than a year.
If not for that, it would be the bike in my garage. You can pick these up from your dealer for like $15k, which is a crazy good deal...
I have a 18 tuono factory, similar mileage. I feel your pain because I had to replace a head due to a worn valve guide. Not a cheap fix but hopefully wont have any other issues.
Plenty of tuonos with higher mileage with zero issues.
Luck of the draw I guess..
It’s just a matter of how you ride it. If you’re touring on it or riding it like a comb individual, you will likely never see these valve guide issues. But if you track it a lot it use the piss out of it and ride it super hard, you have to check the valves and half, the unit. Had I done that I would have been fine.
Yeah. Everyone who knows this bike knows the issues. But the valve interval is the most important issue. One should know with getting into this machine based on how one is going to ride it. That’s all I’m trying to impart on anyone looking at this magnificent bike.
@@Antmanmoto Agreed. I am not gentle to bikes, so I know it would be an issue and considerable expense for me. Two valve services per year in my case... That's what bums me out, because its such a crazy cool bike apart from that.
Good stuff, my friend. My 2019 has about 19k on it now. I just (today, literally) received the upmap and gabro airbox. (great deal for the combo at CBC Motorsports) Can't wait to upgrade the thunder bike...lol.
You’re going with the stage three it sounds like. Good luck with it. It will turn your bike into a full on fire breathing beast. It was actually too much for me. If you’re tracking your bike, especially with that tune and Airbox, you’ve got to stay on top of those valve checks. This is if you are tracking in a lot. If you’re just playing on the street, it’s not as crucial.
@@Antmanmoto "Stage three" is correct. As nice as the power can be, I am going for the fueling and Gabro's improvements across the board. If it's too beastly, I will run the "tamer" map..lol. I have tracked it, but not very often. Of it's 19,000 miles, it's done four track days, and none of them pushing terribly aggressively. In total agreement on valve checks.👌🏼
I'm curious, though.. What map do you usually run when you're carving twisties?
Really cool about the #5
Thanks Bobby!
I’m infatuated with mine, and I also have a new street triple rs and ZX10R but the Tuono is my obsession. Mine is a 2023 speed white and I also have a Gabro tune. I put the SC Project GP22 on it and the sound just brings tears to my eyes.
Yes, it really is a moving experience when you put the exhaust on and get the tune. It’s like hard to believe it’s street legal and we can actually own something like that! I am with you 100% !!!
Curious what you think of the latest gen Tuono v4 1100, with your history. Have you had any (serious) issues with prev. Tuonos / overheating ect? Thinking of picking one up. Thanks!
I kind of went over that in this video. But ownership is not for the timid. Do your research on the bike and have a dealer in your area.
great video, you seem like a super cool guy! If you get rid of the black edges your videos will be even better, let me know if you want me to help you fix it!
You don’t like the looking through a toilet roll effect lol
@@Antmanmoto haha, I think it’d look better fullscreen
Had a 2018 factor tuono love that bike but she burned oil ever 2500kms had to add 200mls shit for long trips. Motul v300 was the only oil she liked priced at $160 for 4litters and also ever 2000-3000kms neutral was difficult to find !! Hi from out back OZ
Yeah, they do burn a little bit of oil. I have to keep a quart laying around and add a little bit here and there between oil changes.
