I just finished watching all four videos. You have organized not only the four videos in a logical order but presented the material in an easy to understand and well illustrated fashion. I have to assume you did some instructing while in the forces. You are a natural born teacher. Thank you
Just finished watching all 4 vids. Great job , informative with great ideas and not all the extra chat. I now have a better idea as to what I am looking for. Thanks
I love some of the changes to the system. First thing I did was add a chest strap to help distribute weight. Great idea to change some of the clips to make it easier to use. Thank you!
I just bought US Molle II straps and waist belt to attach to my issued 82 pattern ruck sack after watching this video. I love my ruck sack - spent this summer rucking with it in Gagetown on course and super excited to try out these next gen hacks/mods. I am sure you were an instructor... or should be.
Hey Bud. I just switched from the molly 2 rucksack to the 82 pattern rucksack and I happened upon your video . I wanted to thank you for this series, it helped me out a fair bit and knowing the lumbar belt from the molly will work on the 82 pattern is very helpful. I recently did a video with mine in it. If you're inclined have a look and please tell me what you think. Also thank you for your service. I will be thinking of you on November 11th every year from now on.
One point of fact that was not mentioned in this series is that there are at least four versions of the main bag for the 82 Pattern ruck. The last one I saw was from 2006 and was a heavy rubberized material, directly before that was the version you assembled here with the trim sewn on. Directly before that was the worst of the lot, made of the same internally rubberized material as the third version but no trim. Neither of those are as good as the final external runberized version. Which brings us to what I believe to be the first run bags, they are made of a heavily woven, internally rubberized material that could be the same stuff that Berghaus uses. It is hard to sew but does not fray, is very abrasion resistant and is the best of the lot. It also has no maker stamp, date or anything else other than an nsn number under the lid. I own two of these now and love them.
Just got re-issued an 82 pattern ruck and was knowing of the Hellcat mod for the ALICE pack, I was curious if similar could be done with this. Well, I guess I got to find some MOLLE 2 suspenders and kidney pad
Hi Tell, great series, lots of really good info here. I still have a lot of surplus gear back from when I was in cadets and love to use it. I remember you mentioned modding a '64 frame onto the '82 ruck in the first vid. I might have missed it, but you never came back to that point. I've got a jump ruck from CP gear along with the frame, but sometimes feel like having the valise on the bottom would be easier for getting stuff from the ruck. Would be great to hear what you know on this. Thanks for the great videos!
Timely for me as I'm thinking about getting one of those packs tomorrow. One thing I'm wondering about after watching this series of four videos is this. How would you go about fastening a closed cell foam sleeping pad to this pack? I have an ex-Canadian Forces green sleeping pad that I like a lot.
Hello I carry a closed cell foam pad on my pack all the time. I usually carry it strapped to the bottom with the sleep system but I have also carried it on top, secured under the main flap. If you want to come by the OB Facebook group we have an entire album dedicated to this.
Great job on the videos! I'm a 2Lt (no comments...) and I've been working on MLPs for the past few weeks. Your videos seem to be straight outta Gagetown! I'm also curious to hear your thoughts on frenkensteinizing an '82 ruck on a '64 frame. I've built one and would really appreciates to hear your comments / tips on that...
Another question. I got one of these packs and I'd like to put a waist belt on it. I do have a nice Molle type waist belt from another ex-military pack and I'd like to use that waist belt. How do I put a waist belt onto the Pattern 82 backpack? Thanks for any helpful suggestions. Btw, I do NOT do Facebook.
Is it the best from the US molle2 ruck? If so, it will install with the straps that normally mount it to the molle2 plastic frame. If it's off some other ruck, I would need more info. Our team guys have used every belt you can imagine. Sometimes it takes paracord, zip ties, nylon webbing, or gun tape to make it work. Good luck.
So does the straps and waist belt from a Molle 2 pack fit the 82 pack frame direct or is their certain mods you had to do to make them work if so what were they ?
They will attach easily and only need one little modification. You need to mount two ladder buckles to the top of the frame for the load lifter straps, the easiest method i found was to ziptie them to the top of the frame.
I just picked one up the other day, i currently have 70 pounds in the main pack without anything on either side. It has not ripped yet, i have heard of people holding 100L in this type of bag.
Great series of videos. About the mods though I do have some concerns about those buckles you recommend for fast access into the ruck. I understand the logic but I have found with that style of buckle in cold Canadian winters plastic gets very fragile and I have a whole collection of bags of various descriptions with broken buckles. Just wondering if the ones you use are anything special in that regard. Finding individual parts for the 1982 pack seems kind of a challenge where I am so I was kind of bummed when I realized my pack did not have a waist strap and I stopped using it because the pack was moving all over the place when I tried carrying any serious weight. Now I know how to mod it for a third party or MOLLE waist belt so I might put it back into use or make it a bit more useful to the next person if I resell it.
These particular buckles are out of the Condor buckle assortment and seem a little beefier than standard buckles but there not magical by any means. They are an easy slip-in replacement if your really concerned about it.

It is very kind of you to say that. Thank you.

Had a blast shooting these videos with you and for you brother!! another great day out at the camp forsure!! lots more to come!!
Great videos! We used to camp out in Newtonville as well

Terrific series on the Alice modifications. Nice job Dude!! Very impressive. Thanks for sharing. best wishes....... Ax
Very nice! I tried to rig up our '82 webbing belt to this, but it was not an ideal fit. I had to tie it on by interwoven paracord.

Well that’s really useful information
Hey, could you do a video on how you attached the molle to the 82 pattern frame?
Well done! Great series. Really informative.
Just got re-issued an 82 pattern ruck and was knowing of the Hellcat mod for the ALICE pack, I was curious if similar could be done with this.

Finding a complete set in Canada is tricky but not impossible. Have you watched my video on the Commando frame? It's the next step up.

Just curious, how did you get the velcro patch sew onto the rucksack, would it decrease weather proofing of the canvas?
Hi, I sewed it on myself. Any seamstress could handle the job. My ruck is 40 years old, it hasn't been waterproof in a long time.

Just got an 82 with frame basically free after buying a CF Bivvy sac , CF bag liner , CF sleep pad
How many liters is this pack in size?
Good question, I dont have any official documents listing the capacity but if I had to guess I'd say around 35 litres.
I just picked one up the other day, i currently have 70 pounds in the main pack without anything on either side. It has not ripped yet, i have heard of people holding 100L in this type of bag.

OshawaBushcraft Good to know. A Winnipeg winter is tough on any kit.
you are acting like this is no longer issued , I still have this stuff ad when it breaks they give me more of it
So this is like the Canadian alice lol
Both the Alice pack and the 82 share a common ancestor, i show it in my video on the CF 64 pattern pack.
