    I have the liner and the inner, and the hood and stuff sack. I will find the rest eventually. One important thing is to not store the sleeping bag in the stuff sack, if you want to keep that nice loft.
    Hung up or lying flat will protect your investment and keep you warm. Thank you for showing this set and giving us MTL Armories link. Stay safe and stay warm, Wade

    I have the same system going on 25-30 years now. Don’t have a mat or the outer shell, not sure if it originally had it. My inner bag has the down pockets running laterally and the outer running longitudinally, as well as more mummy shaped. Never needed more than the inner and the felt/wool liner, but then at -30c i tend not to go camping. Very nice set you have there.

    Those sleep hoods are hard to get but I have one. Mustang also makes sleeping pads for the military but stick with Thermarest as my Mustang fell apart but the Thermarest is still going strong. My pad had R&D!!!!! spray painted on it with white paint. I have two green MSS patrol bags and yes one will fit inside the other.

    I picked up the US mss bivy bag from a Goodwill. I got it for $4.99 and it is like new condition. I use it with my various bags to keep me dry when bush crafting. When I was younger I had a military surplus mummy bag and had it for years until it was to beat up. I really like the system you have as it is very versatile. Great video Wade, cheers brother. 🍻

    Outstanding demo and explanation Wade. I picked up a full system from a surplus store here in Nova Scotia a few years ago. I have used the inner bag but not the whole system yet. I have been thinking about converting one or both of the bags to top-quilts. My bivy did not have the zipper so I installed one myself. That was a challenge. Thanks for sharing

    My inner was plenty at -28 with my clothes on while cold camping…. I typically split my bags with the missus when we winter camp, I’ve actually never had to use both bags at the same time by myself.

    FYI. It is not full of down. My best guess is it’s filled 60/40 down and light feathers. Down does not have quills and you can feel the quills. That said it’s a good system but I preferred the older thick airmatress as the thermarest does not insulate the bottom well in winter.
    Never got cold with the air matress in minus 40 when I served.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! It may not be 100% down but I believe there is a % of pure down that must be met before it can be called a down bag. It may be 70-80%, I’m not too sure, but as you said a great system!👍

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  2 роки тому

      Good question, you’re right cotton is not a great insulater ! The cotton layer is also called a hygiene layer because it can be easily laundered. Down sleeping bags are difficult to clean so having a removable layer to clean is a big bonus.

    Warmest and most comfortable sleep system I have ever used. Personally tested to -44C, slept great & warm. Bags are roomy, easy to change sleeping position makes a better sleep. I do not tie the flanel liner in, the tie out points have riped as I move in the bag. Fleece liner as substitute is warmer and makes moving around smooth. The most comfortable bags I have ever used and my go to in cold weather. The hood system is unique but in the end the best solution for controlling moist breath I have ever used, keeps you bag dry. Made for Canada, tested and depended upon for decades, still dependable today. Only downside is the down insulation, in wet weather you have to be careful to keep it dry. Thanks for a great review!

    Hey Jeff, I own the US MSS and the Canadian sleep system and the Canadian system is significantly better!!! Being former military I understand fully why these things are built so tough!!! But for me the modern light weight construction methods are way superior for both transportation and performance. If you asked most any soldier what they would prefer - It would be the lightest solution possible that did the job 😄 The government would say the cheapest, long lasting solution is better 😔. If you don't mind the weight and bulk this is the best solution available for the 💵

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  3 роки тому +1

      Tough to beat the value here, I agree. I have lighter and more modern bags that cost me $1000 so I'm not inclined to sleep outdoors beside a fire and potentially burn holes in them lol. This kit with the bivy should be pretty much bombproof.

    Curious though, to prevent moisture building up inside the down bags with extended use do you have to use an overbag? Is there really any other way? If so why doesn't these systems come with an overbag? These are basically two down bags inside a goretex like bivy which like all things goretex would build up moisture inside the bag eventually. Although I hear goretex works better the colder it gets outside.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  Рік тому

      All sleeping systems need to be aired out eventually. There is a cotton liner which can be removed and dried and the bivy will prevent the outside of the bag from having moisture build up on it.
      Moisture can be an issue that we need to deal with in cold weather.
      Thanks for watching👍
