Released in 1983, it spent 3 weeks at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1984.
You have to watch the real music video to truly enjoy this song
One of the great lyrics ever:
"Every day is like survival, I'm your lover, not your rival."
That and... "Hold on loosely, but don't let go. If you cling too tightly, you're gonna lose control." Same sentiment, I suppose. 😏 It's worked in my 35 year marriage... so far... 😏
Boy George and Culture Club were a huge cultural phenomenon in the early-mid 80s. He was openly gay & one of the most-widely popular cross dressers in the entertainment industry, across the globe. The. Globe. Listen to their song That's the Way, I'm Only Trying to Help You. That song has so much blues influence and his backup singers have gorgeous gospel voices and harmonies.
Huge hit, on the radio every 3 minutes and he wore makeup which made people go crazy!
Back in the day the Voices and Icons were Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and this man, "Boy George, " from Culture Club. All of them famous for their "Looks. "
First, you have to watch the video, which has nothing to do with the lyrics, to get the full Culture Club vibe.
Second, despite the catchy upbeat vibe, the song is about the volatile relationship he was in at the time with the band’s drummer. “Every day is like survival. You’re my lover, not my rival.” Lots of references to his boyfriend showing different sides, not all good. Changing his colors, so to speak… like a chameleon. “Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream.” Sometimes he was one person, and other times a different person (different colors).
Boy George and the culture club great music strange looking bunch but great music boy George has an incredible voice I love to hear him do the theme song to The crying game
Most of the first two culture club cds were written about boy George’s infatuation with John moss the drummer Culture club were a 80’s band
Sunny Delight? The orange drink? I can see that. This is very much a summertime song for me.
Belated Happy Birthday, Dee. Boy George was and interesting person. Either loved him or hated him. Then he kind of became a Snoop Dogg, accepted as a person who was interesting, funny, and had something to say.
The record stayed at number one for six weeks and became the UK's biggest-selling single of the year 1983, selling 955,000 copies.
Lead singer Boy George at this moment is appearing in the 22nd UK series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here.
Church of a Poison Mind was the first one I heard by culture club, pretty good song.
When this came out, I liked it immediately even though I was more in to hip hop and Michael Jackson
MUST HEAR Classic Tracks,, Culture Club "Time" (Clock Of The Heart) & "Church Of The Poison Mind"
This was such a vibe when this record came out. Culture Club was so different, everyone wanted more. Even if you didn’t understand the lyrics you were singing with them anyway on this song. Btw, I love seeing you and Dee reacting together. You’re a cute couple!😊 Definitely watch the official video when you get a chance because seeing them is part of their appeal, then it will really stay in your head. Epitome of the 80’s!
Snippets of this song have been in a gazillion movies, tv shows and commercials…its been around about 40 years….
His surname is O'Dowd. I'm sure Boy George never boxed, but he came from a big family and many of them boxed, the family had a reputation for being hard.
Boy George explained in The Billboard Book of #1 Hits by Fred Bronson, "The song is about the terrible fear of alienation that people have, the fear of standing up for one thing. It's about trying to suck up to everybody. Basically, if you aren't true, if you don't act like you feel, then you get Karma-justice, that's nature's way of paying you back."
I agree totally Chod. I would not intentionally put this song on my turntable but once you hear it on the radio it starts running in your mind as a backdrop to everything. I believe this is the second song in a week that falls in the "catchey" genre. The other, I believe, was an Ace of Base song. Great, as always, to listen with you both. 😄
Back in the Day this man was the 'voice" you can hear the blues in it...Ty guys
I LOVE Culture Club! It's like the lizard in Rapunzel.
It was a hit. Boy George is still a very talented singer/performer. 80s
Top down driving to the beach music... (Sing-along in a car load of friends!). 😏
The video to this song is good too.
They were very popular in the 1980’s but their music never did anything for me. It’s catchy and has a good hook, perfectly suited for the radio. Boy George, the lead singer, was a very popular figure for many years.
INFECTIOUS!!!!!
There is 2 well known orange drinks, mimosa and tequila sunrise.
This is Boy George and Culture Club. Wish you had the video.
The video really fits Boy George for sure. It’s pronounced with a Kamealion. Ch is “k”. Boy George wore makeup and cross dressed in the 80’s which was completely looked down upon.
tequila sunrise ....a great drink.
I can't this guy
is about 40-year-old this catchy song, 83 I think
Sounds like someone who can't commit to maybe a relationship that's what I get from the lyrics
He’s talking about his sexuality of being gay “ I’m a man” “Loving what be so easy if your color were like my dream”
The Official Version is 100 times better.
Yeah I come here to look at the score better I don't enjoy the music but the background that girl brings my head she's a pretty baby
80ssssssssssssssssssssssss gang, I hated them till GF made Victims our dance song, it was like yeah ok cool song babe, GFs never wrong, even back when!!! Now they are cool to reminisce too, like fine wine they got better with age, a great time to be young free having a good time..
'Cha-mel-ione'
Worst Michael Jackson impression ever

This came out in 1983 and became UK's biggest selling single for that year. It also spent a while on the US Top 100 Billboard as number 1.
George felt he looked better with make up and he was a beautiful man. But he was a MAN and never claimed or pretended to be anything else but comfortable.
Never liked this band. And knew Boy George was queer as a $3 bill from day one. Strange enough a lot of girls in my school liked him. Must have been because they had the same eye shadow.
No. Just no!
