      I think the Indians in Trini and South Africa have had similar history, with both countries using Indians as indentured labour on the sugar cane fields. We share other similar recipes I am sure.

    Good morning aunt. Thank you for your lovely recipes. Please can you advise why my dhall roti is not cooking in the center. I am toasting the roti on a thawa over a gas stove

      It could be a heat distribution issue with the thawa - use your spatula to press the center down and make it brown. It could also be that the rotis are not evenly thin - try to roll it as thin as you can and as evenly as you can.

    Lovely dhal roti.. My only question is if we place hot roti on lunch wrap will the paper not get wet from the steam of the roti?

      Hi, it normally doesn't steam up. Maybe because the container remains open for the duration of making the rotis.

      Hi, I got my thawa more than 30 years ago and maybe even 40 years ago. The best shot for getting a similar one in Durban would be in a shop like Sataars.

    Hello aunty how much of filling does one put in the roti.By the way I tried the veg biryani. U posted I was divine .thank u I has so many compliments. Just that atm due to heavy down pours no gadra in Durban. But I used double beans .Thank u .May u be abundantly blessed for all that u share

      I have got used to using my hand. I think you must start with about 2 tbs for the first one and roll it out. If the roti busts then it’s too much and you can adjust to a lower amount.

    Wow I love making rotis, I just found your channel so much nice food, prepared similar ways like my family in the Caribbean. Islands. I am in the USA . I love dhall rotis as well we eat it with all different curries. But I love it with a glass of red soft drink! Thankyou for sharing your recipe with us!

      Hi Nalini, I find it difficult to explain the pattern for the hat - maybe if we were able to meet face to face I could show the triple stitch pattern I used.

    Brilliant! Thank you. You make it look so easy! But I can see all your years of experience right down to the way you hold the rolling pin to the amount of flour you pick up. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. My mothers was gifted in many things but had unusual ways of cooking: we had pineapple in our curries!!!

      Here is my recipe for puri. The addition of the semolina helps make the dough retain less oil when frying out. let us know if you give it a shot!

      Hi we use a Phillips which is a processor/blender. It’s reaching the end of its life and we will also need to look for a new one soon…

      Are you using very hot water and allowing the dough to rest for a little while?

    We call it Dahl puri in my country of Guyana, SA. Traditionaly we make it this way, but the only difference is adding baking powder to the flour before mixing it with the warm water. I always have issues with averaging of the baking powder when making large amounts. This looks good without baking powder. I will try this way.

      Yes I think I refer to it as dhal puri at some points in the video as well. It is how we call it here in South Africa as well!

      We use cake flour. I say all purpose to avoid using the brand names.

      I have a Philips food processor that I use to grind the dhal into the fine grind we use.

      Hi Jennifer. Pea dhal becomes very mushy and soft when boiled. Gram dhal retains some texture so it’s better to use gram.

      The dhal was already in the water. I took out a little bit and showed it before adding it back in and then adding the hurdee and salt
