Imagine the codensation between those window panes now and the price to replace them. Ughhhh! Bob Vila saying WE,lmao. He means the subs that actually do the work.
Even this far back in the “ This Old House” enterprise, it was possible to get the. Tension that was building between Bob Villa , (who was a general contractor looking to cut corners) and professionals like Richard Thewey and Norm Abrams. I especially appreciated when Richard slapped him down regarding doing the rough plumbing himself. The same applied to the heating professional in telling him that the furnace should be replaced as it would not have much left. Villa was trying to cut too many corners, in that with the heating runs, while ok for going through the closet and into the toilet, really needed to be cut and repiped in the kitchen, as to have heating run behind the cabinets causes the cabinets to deteriorate. As the 1980’s was a time when much more efficient products was coming on to the market, it was surprising that he even questioned having a separation between the foundation and the wall sills. He did not come across as a homeowner going through the process.nor was he looking ahead to the franchise being able to sell the house even in that market, as keeping the 1950’s bathroom would be a detraction.as opposed to a more antique bath that had retained the period look of a house from the turn of the century but had the most modern convinces even the basic plan of converting a garage into a living room, for the Massachusetts winter weather was ridiculous, as evidenced by the snowfall and how a family would e react to having to shovel out a car in an outside space, which was the most likely reason for building the garage in the first place. Not to mention that nothing was done to install any type of heating runs between the house and the garage under the new entrance way/ sun room. While the show was initially geared towards the DIY/ sweat equity consideration, it was always meant to help homeowners preserve and reasonably upgrade their houses. A practice they hav continued to this day, it always seemed that Villa wanted his own visions and seemed upset when better ideas were expounded.
In his defense he was trying to work in a budget and do what most homeowners do. He has to look at what you can afford and what you can cut. Doing the pipe install he only got shot down because you have to be licensed.
The shower is for the person who will be 5'9" and no more than 175 lbs the entire time they live in the house. There are larger showers on Amtrak trains.
This has so much more basic information than later programs. This is much closer to what a homeowner should know.
“I was afraid of getting hurt”. Then proceeds to use a sawzall without eye protection
YEAH, I just don't understand that
Bob's forgetting the most important thing... "your eye protection"
Safety consciousness has sure changed. No harness on the roof, no safety glasses and I bet no dust masks, either
9:47 capillary attraction, a classic plumbers lament.
Cool video. Thank you for posting. I remember watching these as a teenager.
I would love to see what this house looks like today in 2020.

I cant believe nobody used eye protection back then
"How much did you pay for that shower? We can do it your way or we can do it my way.:

Yup, very frowned upon nowadays and often times against modern building code.
Ol Bob outdone himself yet again
$25/hr. in 1982 is equivalent to $80/hr. in 2024.

At 6:10, Bob wasn't a big fan of eye protection.
That hole was cut too low , almost didn't fit .
10:34 bothers me. You can clearly see through the solder. He didn’t get all the way around it

Did y'all notice how Vila tried to take credit for Richard's plumbing work
