Taco Honorio rocks and there are lots of places like it in Tulum. we also have places to eat on th ebeach that are affordable and delicious for Marisco. Shes just a typical whiney tourist that should stay in a all inclusive resort.

As a Mexican, I'm not hyped about Tulum. It used to be very isolated, with only the beautiful beaches, jungles, and Mayan ruins. International gentrification overpriced the whole town; it became focused on a very specific traveler type, such as Cancún because it generates a lot of revenue for the hospitality industry. In reality, it's good we have the diversity of culturally-rooted cities such as Oaxaca and hundreds of Pueblos Magicos, and international tourism like Tulum, everyone is welcome, provides work, and improves our GDP, and we're thankful to everyone that visits. But deep down, it is a little sad to see it change to what it has become.
where is better? after se asia i have no desire to spend $20-100 on any meal ever again

@@DGMUSICisGOOD in Mexico? It depends on what type of vacay, for example, for something really exciting and eclectic, definitely Mexico City; for something quieter and relaxed, and on a budget, Puerto Escondido, or northern Nayarit Riviera, even La Paz or Rosarito.
Yes what a huge change. I was there in 1987 - there wasn't even a bus that went there - I was dropped off at a gas station on the hwy. There were 2 sm restaurants & a bar. An area was set up w/thatched roofed cabana's w/hooks to string up a hammock over a sand floor. It was so isolated & beautifully quiet. It comes as no surprise that the area has been developed - the beaches, coral reef, etc are definitely tourist attractions at there best.
I hate how much European Bloggers complain about the cost of minimum things like Taxis and food. The world is not designed for you to work at home for a month and then travel for a year off of your Danish wages. And on top of that, complain when you pay a little more, which is still 1/5 of what you would pay at home. Most Mexicans will never visit Denmark to complain about the cost of a Smørrebrød because they can't afford the flight or the hotel. But no one feels guilty or vlog about the fact that the world is unaffordable to them!
True. Gentrification also sucks because now Tulum is unaffordable for natives. It seems like a cash grab for alot of international or outside people. But alot of Americans and Europeans want to financially exploit the places for next to nothing whilst some of the natives will never afford to go visit Europe because it's so expensive. Look what over tourism did to Bali and its still relatively cheap but I've heard some complaints about it being costly by Americans.

from Europe and loved Tulum .. It's a place without very big all inclusive hotels and that kind of people staying there. Get a condo with friends at Aldea Zama, a rental car (cheap in Mexico) and you'll enjoy your stay. I loved the beach clubs, not to crowdy, nice food & drinks, magic beach .. i loved it and i'm going back for sure.
Good for you.. the only place you saw in Mexico. You liked Mexico, not Tulum. What you described enjoying can be done in 5000 different places in Mexico without: construction and dust / fumes everywhere. Garbage everywhere, extortion pricing, tourists everywhere.

Im going to be honest. People used to visit tulum only because of its wonderful mayan ruins next to the beach. But at some point it got popular on instagram and they tried to make you think that tulum can offer you what cancun or playa del carmen offers. But it doesnt. The best thing you can do is stay in either cancun or playa del carmen and make one tour to tulum for one day

2005 it was paradise and felt pretty remote and unknown. Last year it a dump. Poor planning and infrastructure and they are still building and expanding!
Although ridiculously expensive, staying on the beach is definitely the way to go lol. I stayed in the town the first time around and had no choice but to embrace my fate: lots of biking and carrying loads of water! It was an experience lol. Even though Tulum’s not the hidden gem it once was, and the rapid development is actually heartbreaking (RIP trees), there’s still something magical about it and I think it’s hard to not get swept into it. So, Ill be going back in a few weeks! The first stop will be Taqueria Honorio, a true gem.
If only walking, driving, or biking weren’t absolutely miserable and dangerous on that beach road…. Honestly it’s such an odd place. It’s beautiful and there’s nice things, but it comes with an insane amount of stress and negatives relative to how much you pay. If money was no object, then the peak experience is basically staying in one resort for a few days only
I visited in 2014 and it was still nice, but it's popularity keeps driving all the prices up to the point where it feels like you're in New York which is crazy. But like I mentioned once the popularity ends it will be a deserted town because it's basically being sustained by rich instagramer's that will soon find their "next destination" and ignore Tulum.
Tulum is overrated, not worth the money to stay there, it may be worth visiting but not staying the night and get ripped off with insane high prices on food and hotel. The way I see it is that Tulum is destined to crash the moment it stops being popular and the "gringos" with money stop going , they will crash badly because many average tourist and Mexicans and locals avoid this location due to it's high price and it will not be able to sustain itself once the hype is over. Tulum will learn the hard way, their greediness will make it a deserted town in the future.
I visited Tulum 26 years ago. Back then it wasn't nearly as crowded and I fell in love. I always wanted to go back and buy property there, but it's so different now. It was still somewhat of a hidden gem when I went.
You are right in many things, but I also think Tulum is not the type of place you are looking, more virgin, cultural and friendly, Oaxaca,Guerrero,Colima,maybe
I've had an amazing time every time I've visited Tulum. I have had a spiritual connection with the place and feel at home there. Yes, the hotel zone is expensive and there is traffic, but in town you can find some of the most amazing food ever for very cheap. The architecture and vibe of Tulum is one a kind and super jungle chic. I say to anyone on the fence about Tulum, this is one persons perspective and it is subjective. Go see the place for yourself.

Most places deemed "tourtisty" are only like that in certain streets/blocks of a city I don't like touristy areas but I find its easy to walk a few blocks away and all of a sudden is 0% tourtisy..... like 100% local
I last visited tulum in 2014. Some of the things you need to know that have changed.. The biggest problem is what you can see.. And that would be the sargassum seaweed. The second biggest problem, which isn't as apparent is that in 2016, gangs, (cartel backed) utilized a Mexican law regarding foreign land ownership to appropriate hundreds of lovely. Beachfront Boutique style hotels. It was long planned out and ruined the whole community, its vibe & its safety. Here is an excerpt from one owners standpoint on the day it all began: "But this other-worldly pampering was rudely interrupted on 17 June 2016. That morning Uno Astrolodge’s founder, Nuno Silva, a rangy Portuguese 45-year-old with a soft voice and long bronze dreadlocks, was at home with his wife and daughter. Just after sunrise, the hotel manager ran across the road to alert him to a problem. There were hundreds of men amassing in the street outside Silva’s beachfront property, the manager told him. Some of them were armed with machetes and big sticks. They were coming to seize the hotel". This same scenario played out over and over during the next 2 years. Corrupt local officials and scared compliant law enforcers stood down and looked the other way. Tulum has NEVER recovered.
I am currently in Tulum and I could not agree more with your view! We came from Amsterdam, originally being from Spain and Greece and for sure this place is overpriced and has gained popularity and hype due to Instagram and paid reviews to hotels and restaurants, total disappointment
Great video! And as a Mexican, I do agree with your impressions. Tulum has become too expensive and crowded. Just a point for clarification: The Mexican Constitution (1917) establishes that all beaches are public and Federal property. It's not something that happened or was changed a couple of years ago as you mentioned. This is something that every Mexican know and it's ingrained in our knowledge. The problem is that, if all the beach front land is acquired by private businesses (with no public passage to the beach :( ), access becomes almost impossible unless you walk all the way until you find one. But by law, you can walk and access all the coastline beaches and no one has the right to stop you or prevent you from doing it.

Lol while I do see where you’re coming from this perspective totally depends on how you travel and how much you know. After backpacking in Mexico I’d expect you know how things go by now. I have been to Tulum 6 times in thr last 3 years and yes the traffic sucks and their can be seaweed that being said this Karen is going way over board . First Tulum esthetically looks different than most places in Mexico and if you know what to do it can be fantastic . Stay in Alda Zuma you can get a beautiful apartment for $100 a night and you can bike ride to the beach . If your a single guy there are smoking hot girls ready to party , trust me
I remember when all of those places were small towns and not as developed as it is today, so I understand your point of view. Hopefully something can be done to maintain the natural beauty of those areas and balance that withe the development of the cities that support them. Now one thing if noticed is that a lot of people don't know the geography of Mexico. The Yucatan Peninsula is divided in three states, Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo. CanCun, Tulum and Isla Mujeres are in the state of Quintana Roo, not Yucatan. Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan and Chetumal is the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. I know it's a small thing, but I wish people would recognize that Quintana Roo is the state in which all those beautiful places everyone talks about exists. All of it is in Mexico, but each state has its unique identity and culture. I really hope that people local and abroad get to enjoy these places, and the developed of these areas are done for the betterment of the world. Among mi Mexico lindo y querido and my Quintana Roo 🇲🇽
Visited Tulum in 1976 and again in 2000. Have not been back since but have really wanted to. Judging from your vlog, it looks totally different from the quaint place I knew. There was hardly a soul there on my first trip. The Mayan ruins were deserted, but fascinating to explore. Different times, I guess.
I know some ppl don't like the truth but you spot on most things about Tulum. We just got back couple of days ago and unfortunately the seaweed was atrocious couldn't get in the water at all. We couldn't even sit at the beach club coz it smelled so bad we had to leave. We went on a weekday so we didn't experience any traffic but the roads are terrible potholes and construction everywhere. I enjoyed the Tulum centro area more, enjoyed the restaurant, bars and the whole vibe was great. The good things most things were located in close proximity so we were able to walk around from the different bars and restaurants. I agree taxi prices are insane and so is everything else but we had a rental car to get around but parking in the hotel zone be prepared to pay 200 pesos flat rate for any amount time. Definitely an Instagram spot with many unique jungle/tree house architecture beach clubs and restaurants. We checked out several of the popular spots like Azulik, Taboo, confessions, ilios definitely pricey but the vibe wasn't there for me. Everywhere blasting the same type of music including during dinner can't have a conversation. Enjoyed visiting the Mayan ruins and snorkeling wasn't the best only stingrays and turtles but it was nice to be in the water. Definitely check out the seaweed situation before you go because right now your beach vacation will be ruined.
Seaweed is a seasonal thing, unfortunately its getting worse and worse every year. You should do some research before booking your vacation… no seaweed around october- april
I’ve been living in Mexico for two years but started off as a backpacker. As a backpacker or traveler I had the same opinions about Tulum so I left. But being back there’s so much more to Tulum than the Hotel Zone or popular neighborhoods. There’s another side of Tulum that people on social media including yourself ever visit. No one goes to the other side of Tulum further from the beach. This is the real Tulum and luxury exists there in diff zones, but way more affordable ($1200 US, two bedrooms, and amenities) that no one on social media knows about (thank god). It’s when you have expectations is when people are disappointed. And that’s with anything in life.
Going to tulum for the third time in 2 years. Best way to get around tulum is renting a scooter. If you know how to navigate it and go during the right time it’s the best! Also the town is special if you take the time to talk and get to know the people, that’s where we had some of the most fun.
Tulum is nice. Like anything everything changes. Now that it’s known you do pay more. So if you are looking for a bargain this is not the place for you. If you bring some money you will have fun. Lots of fun.
Disappointed because you didn't make your research ahead of time. There is a season for seaweed. Is not there all the time. I'm regards to the prices, there are prices and places for all the budgets but you didn't make your research. Give yourself a second opportunity but investigate first and you will see that you will not get bad surprises.
Seaweed is part of our planet anyone who complains about it is just beyond stupid and a priveliged naive kid, also I went for a diving trip only, hated the ignorant gringos everywhere who speak 0 Spanish but found plenty of places to eat that are super cheap like everywhere else in Mexico, people just can't be bothered to look anywhere off the main tourist trap areas lol
I have spent some time in the Yucatan checking out beach parties, and I agree with you that Tulum was massively overrated. Some of the eco-resort hotels are gorgeous, but it was hard to get around and find places to eat without transportation. I much prefer Playa del Carmen as an option which is located only about 30 minutes away between Cancun and Tulum. It has a nice balance of easily accessible beaches, really nice restaurants across a broad range of prices, and cute boutique hotels. It is touristy, but all of these towns are.
I was there before it became well known about 20 years ago. There was not very many hotels no traffic no noise, no thumping music. It felt like being on a beautiful tropic island. So sad what it has become.
That makes me so sad. I visited Tulum in 2007 and back then you could hitchhike from the town to the beach (hotel strip) and back. Food was delicious and cheap. My fondest memory was visiting the Mayan temple and walking down to the beach and swim.
Tulum is so affordable if you stay at BEAUTIFUL affordable airbnbs in downtown centro you can find great experiences! Also if you stay away from the hotel zone you can save money
There are so many other beautiful places in México like the beaches on Oaxaca and I don’t think Tulum is nearly giving the amazing vibes that you get in the south of Mexico. Everything there looks very dreamy and the jungle and the sea are beautiful though. Loved your video 🥰
@@NPrez-cv4jn I personally love Chiapas. We spent two weeks in San Cristobal and did many day trips from there. The food, nature, architecture and people were amazing! And it's very cheap as well. In Oaxaca I loved Puerto Angel - it still feels very local there compared to Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and Zipolite (which are cute beach towns nevertheless). We only recently started filming in Mexico and missed showing those places but are traveling a lot of Northern Mexico right now and are capturing a lot of the North on our channel at the moment!

I had an AMAZING time in Tulum and the surrounding areas. Super unique and modern. Cenotes were amazing. Food was amazing especially the street vendors. Strongly recommend renting a car. Also visited Chichen Itza. 1 of the 7 wonders of the world! Just like any other part in Mexico I recommend paying in pesos and having a spanish speaker around. You have to negotiate your pricing everywhere. If I go back to Quintana Roo I’d stay in Playa Del Carmen though. Taboo beach club was insane btw!
I haven't been to Tulum in about 20 years. Long before Instagram, UA-cam... or even MySpace. It doesn't seem to be as cool as it was back then. Before, there were no resorts or private beaches. No beach clubs either. Just these random little make-shift bars with a few plastic chairs sponsored by Corona or Modelo or whatever. Wow, how times have changed.

I wasn't planning on visiting Tulum during my trip either, but we basically saw the main highlights of Merida in 2 days and already did Uxmal, Chichen Itza and Izamal and had nothing else to do, so I ended up booking a Tulum tour while I was in Merida. It was the WORST tour I've ever taken! The beaches were inaccessible and completely built up with hotels and restaurants, and everything felt so fake. Then when we got to the ruins, we were given the WORST guide in Mexico, who literally rushed us through and only allowed 20 minutes for pictures at the beach area, which was so packed, I couldn't even get a good look. Not to mention, there's a big problem with the Cartel now. When my uncle went 25 years ago, the place was still raw and the beaches could be accessed, but those days are long gone. Although I can't speak for the rest of Quintana Roo, I have no interest in visiting that part of Mexico again, let alone stay in a hotel there. If you mainly want beaches and don't care as much about ruins, then try Progreso.
Very true, big dissapoitment in beach area. Parking with car difficult , parking robbing :), hotel prices crazy. In the evening only road basicly blocked with cars and people whu trying to walk somwhere jumping between cars, cause sidewalks as so narrow. Kanan beach club recommend! Wonderful place, exxelent service, clear talks- 1000MEX per person, all incl consumtion towel,beach chair,drinks, food. Hotel price for one night started 899 USD :):):) , affordable we find around not very far, 249 USD for one night so good luck!
I'm curious to know why did you choose Tulum? It didn't look like you went to the cenotes or the ruins so why didn't you'll stay in Playa De Caramel, Conzumel, or Cancun if you were only there for the beach. Most Americans that go to Mexico are quite aware of the seaweed issue as well but there's so many other Caribbean islands that don't have the same issues if you were only looking for a beach vaca.
I visited Tulum in Jan 2018 and absolutely loved it. Such a beautiful town. That was the highlight of my trip and I am thinking or going back. But after watching your video I am changing my mind...

"Coco limited" hotel is on the beach and very affordable. Lovely hotel and we're snobs. We live in los Angeles so the restaurant prices just seem normal😂 and some even seem low to us. But yes it is pricey for beans rice and fish which is all i ever order.
I would say that Tulum is not the hippie paradise once was famous for. If you want to enjoy the Instagram pristine, white sand and crystal clear water, you better be prepared economically. If you want something more in a budget, go to mahahual
I am from India and the advice I give to all foreigners is ‘travelling to India is like shopping, you will only enjoy it if you know where to shop’ similarly I am sure tulum would at least be ‘visit once in lifetime thing’. And why so much rant about money? Im sure it’s less than US or Europe
Tulum is very very overrated . They just gave free vacations for ig influencers to promote and if you are a European I wouldn’t advise going to Tulum or even Cancun. Expensive. I wouldn’t feel safe walking there at night. Cancun turned into a concrete building block of a cheap version of Vegas. And the workers there are pretty rude imo. It just doesn’t have that feel of authencity it just feels like they are chopping down the Yucatan rainforest and building homes for investors. Personally there’s a dozen places way way better to visit in Europe. If not Europe I would say anyone of the top islands in Southeast Asia or even Bali is a thousand times better and cheaper with a real tropical vibe.
Bali = The best place in Indonesia. Tulum= not even the best place in the Peninsula. Clearly you havent been to the real mexican hidden gems: Loreto, Balandra, Nayarit, Colima, etc
i been at 15 17 and 2020 and tulum beach get worst, as in 15 there almost been no cars only bikes and prices been fine for me and amazing vibe i been staying at PPP , Amansala and Amansala Chicka my fav place ! they must take all those cars from that road and stop building new areas killing the jungle
It's somewhat rainy during that time but not bad. I own a condo in the Holistika area of Tulum which is a 5 minute drive from downtown and 15 minutes from the beach. The best times are October-April, there's minimal to no seaweed. But in the summer unfortunately is when some (not all) of the beaches are consumed with it.
Tulum seems to be having the general issues of popular tourist attractions. Anyways thanks for the insightful tour of Tulum. Keep up the good work Kaja.
We are in Tulum right now ( the town, not the hotel zone). Our condo is beautiful, the town is not. Once you step outside the condo, there's trash everywhere, they don't clean anything. Whatever is left from the jungle is filled with trash. Dust. It's just everywhere. The vegetation along the roads is grey, not green. Scammers everywhere. Poverty. You'll see blocks of slums: that's where the locals live. Most of the houses are not even houses, they are huts built from just about anything. Most locals are not Maya, they come from other parts of Mexico looking for jobs and they come with nothing, so they live like this - in slums... You can see little kids going through trash. It's heartbreaking. The beaches are actually all public, it's the law, but the hotels make it hard for you to get there without buying food and drink from them. Parking is hard to find. I definitely prefer closed communities like Puerto Aventuras.
From the start she is wrong Merida is not the capital of the state! Bevies she is not even in Yucatán she is in Quintanarro!!!! Before blogging she has to know where she is located at least!!! Used to lived there many years ago! Now going there very of them from NY .. we loved it!!! And she can’t compare Puerto escindido to Tulum! Totally different places!
I was in Tulum for a day to go see the ruins, but I stayed in Playa del Carmen! I did my research and I knew it was gonna be way overpriced.. You should’ve visited Sayulita, Nayarit or La Paz in Baja California.. much better experiences! Underdeveloped places and stunning beaches and nature. :)
I am sorry but the Pacific does not compare to the Caribbean in terms of beauty. I am Mexican from the Pacific side and we do have better food, but not natural wonders like the cenotes and the snorkling

As a Mexican, I'm not hyped about Tulum. It used to be very isolated, with only the beautiful beaches, jungles, and Mayan ruins. International gentrification overpriced the whole town; it became focused on a very specific traveler type, such as Cancún because it generates a lot of revenue for the hospitality industry.
In reality, it's good we have the diversity of culturally-rooted cities such as Oaxaca and hundreds of Pueblos Magicos, and international tourism like Tulum, everyone is welcome, provides work, and improves our GDP, and we're thankful to everyone that visits. But deep down, it is a little sad to see it change to what it has become.
where is better? after se asia i have no desire to spend $20-100 on any meal ever again
@@DGMUSICisGOOD in Mexico? It depends on what type of vacay, for example, for something really exciting and eclectic, definitely Mexico City; for something quieter and relaxed, and on a budget, Puerto Escondido, or northern Nayarit Riviera, even La Paz or Rosarito.

Yes what a huge change. I was there in 1987 - there wasn't even a bus that went there - I was dropped off at a gas station on the hwy. There were 2 sm restaurants & a bar. An area was set up w/thatched roofed cabana's w/hooks to string up a hammock over a sand floor. It was so isolated & beautifully quiet. It comes as no surprise that the area has been developed - the beaches, coral reef, etc are definitely tourist attractions at there best.
I hate how much European Bloggers complain about the cost of minimum things like Taxis and food. The world is not designed for you to work at home for a month and then travel for a year off of your Danish wages. And on top of that, complain when you pay a little more, which is still 1/5 of what you would pay at home. Most Mexicans will never visit Denmark to complain about the cost of a Smørrebrød because they can't afford the flight or the hotel. But no one feels guilty or vlog about the fact that the world is unaffordable to them!
True. Gentrification also sucks because now Tulum is unaffordable for natives. It seems like a cash grab for alot of international or outside people. But alot of Americans and Europeans want to financially exploit the places for next to nothing whilst some of the natives will never afford to go visit Europe because it's so expensive. Look what over tourism did to Bali and its still relatively cheap but I've heard some complaints about it being costly by Americans.

Well i am canadian and tulum is twice as expensive than montreal 🤔 1/5 ???? Have you been to tulum ??? Clubbing cost twice, eating maybe 3x, taxi 5x because you cant really refuse a fare in quintana roo or else they call their (friends)🔫 i can go all day talking about that, quintana roo is ruined since covid, been there since 2016 more than 20 times.

from Europe and loved Tulum .. It's a place without very big all inclusive hotels and that kind of people staying there. Get a condo with friends at Aldea Zama, a rental car (cheap in Mexico) and you'll enjoy your stay.
I loved the beach clubs, not to crowdy, nice food & drinks, magic beach .. i loved it and i'm going back for sure.

Im going to be honest. People used to visit tulum only because of its wonderful mayan ruins next to the beach. But at some point it got popular on instagram and they tried to make you think that tulum can offer you what cancun or playa del carmen offers. But it doesnt.
The best thing you can do is stay in either cancun or playa del carmen and make one tour to tulum for one day
cancun blows too. they milk tourists everywhere, the bar area isnt big. hotels dont allow u to go visit your friends.

2005 it was paradise and felt pretty remote and unknown. Last year it a dump. Poor planning and infrastructure and they are still building and expanding!
Although ridiculously expensive, staying on the beach is definitely the way to go lol. I stayed in the town the first time around and had no choice but to embrace my fate: lots of biking and carrying loads of water! It was an experience lol. Even though Tulum’s not the hidden gem it once was, and the rapid development is actually heartbreaking (RIP trees), there’s still something magical about it and I think it’s hard to not get swept into it. So, Ill be going back in a few weeks! The first stop will be Taqueria Honorio, a true gem.

Honestly it’s such an odd place. It’s beautiful and there’s nice things, but it comes with an insane amount of stress and negatives relative to how much you pay.
If money was no object, then the peak experience is basically staying in one resort for a few days only

I visited in 2014 and it was still nice, but it's popularity keeps driving all the prices up to the point where it feels like you're in New York which is crazy. But like I mentioned once the popularity ends it will be a deserted town because it's basically being sustained by rich instagramer's that will soon find their "next destination" and ignore Tulum.

Tulum is overrated, not worth the money to stay there, it may be worth visiting but not staying the night and get ripped off with insane high prices on food and hotel. The way I see it is that Tulum is destined to crash the moment it stops being popular and the "gringos" with money stop going , they will crash badly because many average tourist and Mexicans and locals avoid this location due to it's high price and it will not be able to sustain itself once the hype is over. Tulum will learn the hard way, their greediness will make it a deserted town in the future.
I visited Tulum 26 years ago. Back then it wasn't nearly as crowded and I fell in love. I always wanted to go back and buy property there, but it's so different now. It was still somewhat of a hidden gem when I went.

I've had an amazing time every time I've visited Tulum. I have had a spiritual connection with the place and feel at home there. Yes, the hotel zone is expensive and there is traffic, but in town you can find some of the most amazing food ever for very cheap. The architecture and vibe of Tulum is one a kind and super jungle chic. I say to anyone on the fence about Tulum, this is one persons perspective and it is subjective. Go see the place for yourself.

Most places deemed "tourtisty" are only like that in certain streets/blocks of a city

I last visited tulum in 2014. Some of the things you need to know that have changed.. The biggest problem is what you can see.. And that would be the sargassum seaweed. The second biggest problem, which isn't as apparent is that in 2016, gangs, (cartel backed) utilized a Mexican law regarding foreign land ownership to appropriate hundreds of lovely. Beachfront Boutique style hotels. It was long planned out and ruined the whole community, its vibe & its safety. Here is an excerpt from one owners standpoint on the day it all began:
"But this other-worldly pampering was rudely interrupted on 17 June 2016. That morning Uno Astrolodge’s founder, Nuno Silva, a rangy Portuguese 45-year-old with a soft voice and long bronze dreadlocks, was at home with his wife and daughter. Just after sunrise, the hotel manager ran across the road to alert him to a problem. There were hundreds of men amassing in the street outside Silva’s beachfront property, the manager told him. Some of them were armed with machetes and big sticks. They were coming to seize the hotel".
This same scenario played out over and over during the next 2 years. Corrupt local officials and scared compliant law enforcers stood down and looked the other way. Tulum has NEVER recovered.

We came from Amsterdam, originally being from Spain and Greece and for sure this place is overpriced and has gained popularity and hype due to Instagram and paid reviews to hotels and restaurants, total disappointment

Great video! And as a Mexican, I do agree with your impressions. Tulum has become too expensive and crowded. Just a point for clarification: The Mexican Constitution (1917) establishes that all beaches are public and Federal property. It's not something that happened or was changed a couple of years ago as you mentioned. This is something that every Mexican know and it's ingrained in our knowledge. The problem is that, if all the beach front land is acquired by private businesses (with no public passage to the beach :( ), access becomes almost impossible unless you walk all the way until you find one. But by law, you can walk and access all the coastline beaches and no one has the right to stop you or prevent you from doing it.

I have been to Tulum 6 times in thr last 3 years and yes the traffic sucks and their can be seaweed that being said this Karen is going way over board . First Tulum esthetically looks different than most places in Mexico and if you know what to do it can be fantastic . Stay in Alda Zuma you can get a beautiful apartment for $100 a night and you can bike ride to the beach . If your a single guy there are smoking hot girls ready to party , trust me
I remember when all of those places were small towns and not as developed as it is today, so I understand your point of view. Hopefully something can be done to maintain the natural beauty of those areas and balance that withe the development of the cities that support them. Now one thing if noticed is that a lot of people don't know the geography of Mexico. The Yucatan Peninsula is divided in three states, Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo. CanCun, Tulum and Isla Mujeres are in the state of Quintana Roo, not Yucatan. Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan and Chetumal is the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. I know it's a small thing, but I wish people would recognize that Quintana Roo is the state in which all those beautiful places everyone talks about exists. All of it is in Mexico, but each state has its unique identity and culture. I really hope that people local and abroad get to enjoy these places, and the developed of these areas are done for the betterment of the world. Among mi Mexico lindo y querido and my Quintana Roo 🇲🇽

Visited Tulum in 1976 and again in 2000. Have not been back since but have really wanted to. Judging from your vlog, it looks totally different from the quaint place I knew. There was hardly a soul there on my first trip. The Mayan ruins were deserted, but fascinating to explore. Different times, I guess.

I know some ppl don't like the truth but you spot on most things about Tulum. We just got back couple of days ago and unfortunately the seaweed was atrocious couldn't get in the water at all. We couldn't even sit at the beach club coz it smelled so bad we had to leave. We went on a weekday so we didn't experience any traffic but the roads are terrible potholes and construction everywhere. I enjoyed the Tulum centro area more, enjoyed the restaurant, bars and the whole vibe was great. The good things most things were located in close proximity so we were able to walk around from the different bars and restaurants. I agree taxi prices are insane and so is everything else but we had a rental car to get around but parking in the hotel zone be prepared to pay 200 pesos flat rate for any amount time. Definitely an Instagram spot with many unique jungle/tree house architecture beach clubs and restaurants. We checked out several of the popular spots like Azulik, Taboo, confessions, ilios definitely pricey but the vibe wasn't there for me. Everywhere blasting the same type of music including during dinner can't have a conversation. Enjoyed visiting the Mayan ruins and snorkeling wasn't the best only stingrays and turtles but it was nice to be in the water. Definitely check out the seaweed situation before you go because right now your beach vacation will be ruined.
Seaweed is a seasonal thing, unfortunately its getting worse and worse every year. You should do some research before booking your vacation… no seaweed around october- april

I’ve been living in Mexico for two years but started off as a backpacker. As a backpacker or traveler I had the same opinions about Tulum so I left. But being back there’s so much more to Tulum than the Hotel Zone or popular neighborhoods. There’s another side of Tulum that people on social media including yourself ever visit. No one goes to the other side of Tulum further from the beach. This is the real Tulum and luxury exists there in diff zones, but way more affordable ($1200 US, two bedrooms, and amenities) that no one on social media knows about (thank god). It’s when you have expectations is when people are disappointed. And that’s with anything in life.
Going to tulum for the third time in 2 years. Best way to get around tulum is renting a scooter. If you know how to navigate it and go during the right time it’s the best! Also the town is special if you take the time to talk and get to know the people, that’s where we had some of the most fun.
I went to Tulum in 2010 and it was much different but you are 100% spot on it's turned into a spot for Instagram photos.

Tulum is nice. Like anything everything changes. Now that it’s known you do pay more. So if you are looking for a bargain this is not the place for you. If you bring some money you will have fun. Lots of fun.
Disappointed because you didn't make your research ahead of time. There is a season for seaweed. Is not there all the time. I'm regards to the prices, there are prices and places for all the budgets but you didn't make your research. Give yourself a second opportunity but investigate first and you will see that you will not get bad surprises.

Seaweed is part of our planet anyone who complains about it is just beyond stupid and a priveliged naive kid, also I went for a diving trip only, hated the ignorant gringos everywhere who speak 0 Spanish but found plenty of places to eat that are super cheap like everywhere else in Mexico, people just can't be bothered to look anywhere off the main tourist trap areas lol
I have spent some time in the Yucatan checking out beach parties, and I agree with you that Tulum was massively overrated. Some of the eco-resort hotels are gorgeous, but it was hard to get around and find places to eat without transportation. I much prefer Playa del Carmen as an option which is located only about 30 minutes away between Cancun and Tulum. It has a nice balance of easily accessible beaches, really nice restaurants across a broad range of prices, and cute boutique hotels. It is touristy, but all of these towns are.

Exactly our toughts after revisiting Tulum after 5 years
We are really disappointed
I was there before it became well known about 20 years ago. There was not very many hotels no traffic no noise, no thumping music. It felt like being on a beautiful tropic island. So sad what it has become.
That makes me so sad. I visited Tulum in 2007 and back then you could hitchhike from the town to the beach (hotel strip) and back. Food was delicious and cheap. My fondest memory was visiting the Mayan temple and walking down to the beach and swim.
Hotel prices at Tulum beach area are insane.

Tulum is so affordable if you stay at BEAUTIFUL affordable airbnbs in downtown centro you can find great experiences! Also if you stay away from the hotel zone you can save money
There are so many other beautiful places in México like the beaches on Oaxaca and I don’t think Tulum is nearly giving the amazing vibes that you get in the south of Mexico. Everything there looks very dreamy and the jungle and the sea are beautiful though.

@@NPrez-cv4jn I personally love Chiapas. We spent two weeks in San Cristobal and did many day trips from there. The food, nature, architecture and people were amazing! And it's very cheap as well. In Oaxaca I loved Puerto Angel - it still feels very local there compared to Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and Zipolite (which are cute beach towns nevertheless). We only recently started filming in Mexico and missed showing those places but are traveling a lot of Northern Mexico right now and are capturing a lot of the North on our channel at the moment!

I had an AMAZING time in Tulum and the surrounding areas. Super unique and modern. Cenotes were amazing. Food was amazing especially the street vendors. Strongly recommend renting a car. Also visited Chichen Itza. 1 of the 7 wonders of the world! Just like any other part in Mexico I recommend paying in pesos and having a spanish speaker around. You have to negotiate your pricing everywhere. If I go back to Quintana Roo I’d stay in Playa Del Carmen though. Taboo beach club was insane btw!

It doesn't seem to be as cool as it was back then. Before, there were no resorts or private beaches. No beach clubs either. Just these random little make-shift bars with a few plastic chairs sponsored by Corona or Modelo or whatever. Wow, how times have changed.
She is 100% correct..Tulum was a quaint place to go ..now with social media this place has exploded with tourism and of course extremely high prices..forget about it

I wasn't planning on visiting Tulum during my trip either, but we basically saw the main highlights of Merida in 2 days and already did Uxmal, Chichen Itza and Izamal and had nothing else to do, so I ended up booking a Tulum tour while I was in Merida. It was the WORST tour I've ever taken! The beaches were inaccessible and completely built up with hotels and restaurants, and everything felt so fake. Then when we got to the ruins, we were given the WORST guide in Mexico, who literally rushed us through and only allowed 20 minutes for pictures at the beach area, which was so packed, I couldn't even get a good look. Not to mention, there's a big problem with the Cartel now. When my uncle went 25 years ago, the place was still raw and the beaches could be accessed, but those days are long gone. Although I can't speak for the rest of Quintana Roo, I have no interest in visiting that part of Mexico again, let alone stay in a hotel there. If you mainly want beaches and don't care as much about ruins, then try Progreso.

Very true, big dissapoitment in beach area. Parking with car difficult , parking robbing :), hotel prices crazy. In the evening only road basicly blocked with cars and people whu trying to walk somwhere jumping between cars, cause sidewalks as so narrow. Kanan beach club recommend! Wonderful place, exxelent service, clear talks- 1000MEX per person, all incl consumtion towel,beach chair,drinks, food. Hotel price for one night started 899 USD :):):) , affordable we find around not very far, 249 USD for one night so good luck!
I'm curious to know why did you choose Tulum? It didn't look like you went to the cenotes or the ruins so why didn't you'll stay in Playa De Caramel, Conzumel, or Cancun if you were only there for the beach. Most Americans that go to Mexico are quite aware of the seaweed issue as well but there's so many other Caribbean islands that don't have the same issues if you were only looking for a beach vaca.
I visited Tulum in Jan 2018 and absolutely loved it. Such a beautiful town. That was the highlight of my trip and I am thinking or going back. But after watching your video I am changing my mind...

We live in los Angeles so the restaurant prices just seem normal😂 and some even seem low to us. But yes it is pricey for beans rice and fish which is all i ever order.

I would say that Tulum is not the hippie paradise once was famous for. If you want to enjoy the Instagram pristine, white sand and crystal clear water, you better be prepared economically. If you want something more in a budget, go to mahahual

Tulum is very very overrated . They just gave free vacations for ig influencers to promote and if you are a European I wouldn’t advise going to Tulum or even Cancun. Expensive. I wouldn’t feel safe walking there at night. Cancun turned into a concrete building block of a cheap version of Vegas. And the workers there are pretty rude imo. It just doesn’t have that feel of authencity it just feels like they are chopping down the Yucatan rainforest and building homes for investors. Personally there’s a dozen places way way better to visit in Europe. If not Europe I would say anyone of the top islands in Southeast Asia or even Bali is a thousand times better and cheaper with a real tropical vibe.

i been at 15 17 and 2020 and tulum beach get worst, as in 15 there almost been no cars only bikes and prices been fine for me and amazing vibe i been staying at PPP , Amansala and Amansala Chicka my fav place ! they must take all those cars from that road and stop building new areas killing the jungle

Anyone have any experience going to Tulum late August early September? How bad is the weather and seaweed
It's somewhat rainy during that time but not bad. I own a condo in the Holistika area of Tulum which is a 5 minute drive from downtown and 15 minutes from the beach. The best times are October-April, there's minimal to no seaweed. But in the summer unfortunately is when some (not all) of the beaches are consumed with it.

It seems that you were disappointed partly because it was not as cheap as you were used to in the other locations
We are in Tulum right now ( the town, not the hotel zone). Our condo is beautiful, the town is not. Once you step outside the condo, there's trash everywhere, they don't clean anything. Whatever is left from the jungle is filled with trash. Dust. It's just everywhere. The vegetation along the roads is grey, not green. Scammers everywhere. Poverty. You'll see blocks of slums: that's where the locals live. Most of the houses are not even houses, they are huts built from just about anything. Most locals are not Maya, they come from other parts of Mexico looking for jobs and they come with nothing, so they live like this - in slums... You can see little kids going through trash. It's heartbreaking. The beaches are actually all public, it's the law, but the hotels make it hard for you to get there without buying food and drink from them. Parking is hard to find. I definitely prefer closed communities like Puerto Aventuras.

From the start she is wrong Merida is not the capital of the state! Bevies she is not even in Yucatán she is in Quintanarro!!!! Before blogging she has to know where she is located at least!!!
Used to lived there many years ago! Now going there very of them from NY .. we loved it!!! And she can’t compare Puerto escindido to Tulum! Totally different places!

I was in Tulum for a day to go see the ruins, but I stayed in Playa del Carmen! I did my research and I knew it was gonna be way overpriced.. You should’ve visited Sayulita, Nayarit or La Paz in Baja California.. much better experiences! Underdeveloped places and stunning beaches and nature. :)
The Tulum ruins is imo one big amusement park… busloads off people… with an endless road with “souvenir” shops…
I am sorry but the Pacific does not compare to the Caribbean in terms of beauty. I am Mexican from the Pacific side and we do have better food, but not natural wonders like the cenotes and the snorkling
I see your pov, but honestly you had a bad decision staying out of the hotels in the beach area.The downtown is clearly messy and really afects de whole experience in Tulum. You save some money, but have some taxis costs and anothers inconvenients. Cheaps become expensive at the end of the day

Of all Yucatán península you missed out big time in Holbox, Puerto Morelos, Xcalac, etc and landed in the most expensive place
Your video is correct. I just arrived from there. And came to youtube to check if other people hated the city as much as I did.
Just left Tulum... stayed at Nomade... this whole city is a waste of time and money... don't fall for these influencer videos.. everything is SUPER expensive with SH#T service for the price... Just not worth it. There are manier places that have the views and you don't have to pay $11 for a coffee...

Way over priced, I'm in Tulum right now for the thrid time in 10 years won't be back ,same thing happened in sayilita, too bad ,but there's lots more to Mexico, where you're not being scared at every opportunity
