Grew up listening to MI. Almost every song they have ever written is genius! Great hooks, great riffs, fantastic music! Never really given the credit I think they deserve. RIP Jim Ellison, you are sorely missed!

Legend? How? He had the world by the balls and offed himself over a woman? Thats not being a legend. It's being weak, short-sighted and selfish. His music is to be admired and loved but the other? It's throwing away a gift.

Was leaving the Park West in June after seeing a Imelda Mar perform there (my first trip back there since '93 for Concrete Blonde) and they played this song over the sound system as people left. MAN... I went into a sentimental time warp. Loved this band so much. Been listening to them in my jeep lately while I traveling the country, pretending I'm 22 again.

Great! I got to spend a lot of time with these guys when I was with Mercury Records in the 80's and 90's. I first saw them work out of an old Van then Alabama's old tour bus (we crashed into an old gas station, due to brake failure} and on to headlining. Jim's death was quite a waste to the music world. All great guys with extreme talent and personality.

Saw them play a free concert in a field on the side of U of I's Assembly Hall in May or June 1991 or 1992 (date corrections appreciated!) at some sort of campus open house event at University of Illinois. Tremendous power pop! Great HiWatt sound. One of my favorite concerts! Very cool free show! Sorely missed band. God rest your soul Jim. Anyone who was there and remembers this concert. Please reply.

I know I might piss some people off with this comment but I’m going to say it anyway. If you don’t like it well…lump it!
I heard this song today for the first time in over 30 years and was immediately teleported back to the spring of 1991 when I first heard it. The first time I did hear this song I was immediately blown away by it and thought to myself “wow, this is going to be the sound of the 1990s!“ Unfortunately later on that year Nirvana released that album “Nevermind“ and that was when music for me started to go to hell. Here we are decades later and all the talentless garbage we have to show for exemplifies that. Of course like everybody else I to embraced Nirvana but after about two years of listening to that apathetic Seattle misery music I had to put it down and walk away from it for good.
As for Jim Ellison and Material Issue grunge rather quickly eclipsed his wonderful talent as well as many others from the 1990/1991 timeframe making pretty much all bands like his mere footnotes in the history of music. Of course we will never know but I can’t help but wonder if that’s the reason why Jim killed himself.
Once again, if you’re offended by this well then you can just be offended! Grudge killed many awesome bands at the beginning of that decade and I will forever say that!

    • @gregsmith2122
      @gregsmith2122 Рік тому +1

I've been saying basically the same thing for many years. I personally think, grunge murdered many amazing groups such as material issue, neds atomic dustbin, etc that would have gone so much further. I pine for 90 91 times. Very creative music quickly overshadowed and forgotten.

    • @phayzyre1052

@@gregsmith2122 Greg, my friend I don’t know where you are in the world but I wish I could shake your hand and buy you a pitcher of your favorite beer! You said a mouthful. From about 1989 to 1991 that was what I thought was going to be the dawn of a new era of music and I was really looking forward to the post modern movement of but when that piss ant whiny Kurt Cobain hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991 bellyaching about how miserable his life was and all of the gloom, doom and angst filled crap going up there around Seattle it did not take me long to put that bullshit down for good!
A friend of mine who feels the same way said it best: “grunge was like a fart…it came on loud and strong, created a stink then disappeared!” Apart from that one thing I’ll give credit where credit is due because at least a lot of bands from the 1960s, 70s and 80s are still together and making music. A lot of people can name artists from that time period and the songs they wrote but name any grunge musician and people are like “who?”
And where are all of the grunge pioneers who were once so revered when grunge hit the scene? Either one of two things: dead or have all but disappeared! Sure, grudge had its moment in the sun but its moment was about like a shooting star burning brightly yet very briefly.

    Is the model Linda Evangelista?

Great song by a great band. Really a shame MI got overwhelmed by the grunge scene. The entire Chicago scene was way better then 95% of grunge. Who listens to grunge any longer anyway? Nirvana excepted - the one great grunge band.

Forgot to add - Urge Overkill sucked really bad though. I'd rather listen to the 95% of shit grunge than UO.

These guys didn't have good songs like legendary power pop groups such as The Romantics, The Paul Collins Beat, Cheap Trick and The Knack. That first Paul Collins Beat LP and that first Romantics LP are solid albums of perfect power pop. Material Issue sounds like Christian rock or elevator music.

@LittlestFameMonster With respect to people of all religions, Material Issue sounds like bad 90s Christian rock. These guys were never power pop, they were bland soft rock. I really gave these guys a chance and tried to listen to their music, but it's not pleasing to the ear. Cheap Trick, Paul Collins Beat, The Romantics and even The Knack are far more enjoyable than this crap.
