This song brings me back to the days when I was young and I actually felt those stong, really romantic feelings for a girl. I barely remember those days, but this song helps me recall..
Good. They did a brilliant cover, and it makes so much sense that Brandon chose this song of all MI's songs. Be sure to check out the rest of MI's discography.
I remember writing a poem about his passing so long ago I shared the poem with the bass player on my space of all places. I still remember some of the words: “does Valerie still love you? Is Rene still the same?
From the 1st time I saw Material Issue at the Grant Park taste of Chicago ( the night the replacements called it quits) I lived and breathed for the next show. At the Metro, in Chicago I saw them there many times but to be right up there in front of Jim by the stage was mesmerizing for me. His presence and charisma was like nothing I ever seen before. He was 1 of a kind. Unique. I went to there last concert at the Metro 2 weeks b4 he died. I was totally devistated when I heard the news. I created a wall of fame above ny desk and I have an autographed picture from Jim. It is framed with ny concert tickets. I also framed the newspaper article from the day ge took his life. I was totally in love with him and wished I could be his girl. We will neet someday in heaven
I love pretty near every song Jim wrote with Material Issue but ‘Very First Lie’ is my favourite a perfect power pop song. This tambourine is for you Jim...
When Jim was a senior in high school a young Billy Corgan was a freshman at the same high school. Two lead singers from two popular bands, walking the same hallways🙂 Glenbard North High School IL.
Saw Material Issue play an outdoor gig at Mankato State University. Love this band, and all the amazing memories that come flooding back. Makes my heart smile!🤗
I was 22 when this song was released, all these years later it still hits with as much emotion as it did when I first heard it. Such an underrated band..............
I can't tell you what I wouldn't paid to have these records reissued on vinyl!!! Please do this!!!!! This song is my love life 30 years ago and the same as it is today. This band needs to be in the rock hall of fame. Miss them so much.
I first heard this song on the stairs of a guy I had a crush on. He was sitting there, strumming it on his guitar. In the 90's every college boy had a guitar. I ended up crushing on the song more than him.
I saw these guys play a small club in a college town in 1992 with maybe 100 other people. This is a band I discovered on 120 Minutes on MTV and was happy to see when they came through town. I met Jim Ellison briefly after the show, I just wanted to tell him I enjoyed the show. He was nice, but admitted he was anxious there wasn't more media there because he was focused on getting the band out there and achieving the Indy success so many bands were experiencing in that era. When I found out years later that he killed himself, apparently in frustration over the band's lack of commercial success...it's still kind of heartbreaking.
Bravo to my dear friend Phil Angotti for keeping the legacy of the best band that ever came out if Chicago. Great job Phil. I'm always so impressed when I find a video if you performing Material Issue. They will always be my favorite all time band. Ty for keeping his talent alive
these guys truly wrote songs of love &heartbreak!!!!Ted&Mike are getting together in memory of Jim in Chicago to do The International PoP Overthrow Music Fest.
When I was in the Air Force, in final years of the Cold War, a friend of mine and I in the dorms used to noodle around doing covers of songs we liked, and my cover of this song got me laid lol. Thanks, Jim lol
Had the chance to see them live in Las Vegas at the Aladdin they opened the first act before the Pretenders and I was an immediate fan of the band, that 25 yrs ago before it changed to Planet Hollywood. Awesome concert, very sad to loose such a talent so early in his career.
Are you kidding me? Then how come rick nielsen guested on Freak City Soundtrack? How come Mike Chapman produced Freak City? Do you even know who he is, or what songs he and Nicky Chinn wrote and what bands they produced? Granted MI was more of a jangly, power pop band than CT, but both bands come from a strong midwest powerpop tradition that goes back decades (the Raspberries, the Vandalias, Urge Overkill, Cheap Trick, the Shoes, the Knack, among about a thousand others)
@MacReverb2 Why do you ignore what Ted Ansani had to say? Nobody here will deny that Paul Collins' first album "The Beat" is the definitive power pop album. I met Ted Ansani of Material Issue and he went on about Paul Collins Beat, stating that he is a huge fan. I met Doug Fieger from The Knack in 2007 and he said The Beat had the best songs by any power pop band ever. Paul Collins also had the group The Nerves, who did the song Hanging On The Telephone. How can you say I don't know power pop?
I loved/love this band. I don't understand how awful bands get signed and a band like this doesn't. I was devastated when he killed himself, but he was an extremely emotional man. They could have been as famous as Nirvana.
Great band - from Chicago. The city of broad shoulders. Very first lie, one of the best pop-rock songs i've ever heard. The whole catalog-pretty good. Too bad Jim could'nt handle all the assholes in this crazy little thing we call earth.
climb out the window of your life, down the drainpipe, walk away, just do it and get on with living. start over, do anything but live in that pile of shit you've been suffering.
Revenge can only be granted to a person one time for the most lowest acts taking a soul like his when he was really starting to create the songs that must be given. The one job I was given to do in the end was sing a song for everywomen and he did it for me giving his prophetic words at the exact moment in time, Murder of the High Heavens is a serious offense. I've got proof cause i am there with him. Cops didn't even care. Catherine Wheel is the only way for you. So if you are out there 911
With respect to people of all religions, Material Issue sounds like bad 90s Christian rock. These guys were never power pop, they were bland soft rock. I really gave these guys a chance and tried to listen to their music, but it's not pleasing to the ear. Cheap Trick, Paul Collins Beat, The Romantics and even The Knack are far more enjoyable than this crap.
This song brings me back to the days when I was young and I actually felt those stong, really romantic feelings for a girl. I barely remember those days, but this song helps me recall..
I just read this and it gutted me.
You are fortunate to have had this sweetheart of a song to relate to and cherish. I only wish it could have been mine instead of”Lola” by the Kinks..,
I was 18 in 98 when I was obsessed with this song because both me and my first girlfriend lied about our age when we first met
The Killers just brought me here!

I used to take my daughter -- suburban kid. Last show of theirs's I saw John Cougar open for them. He wanted to try out his road tour show.
That’s really poignant to do that, KG.
I love pretty near every song Jim wrote with Material Issue but ‘Very First Lie’ is my favourite a perfect power pop song.

I was there. I remember Jim but not Billy.
Got to see them warming up the Pretenders in Minneapolis years ago. One of my top five shows ever.

International Pop Overthrow was reissued earlier this year and think there are plans to reissue Freak City Soundtrack as well.
@@michaelwegner5902 really? I'm searching for a copy right now!!! Thanks!
Jim Ellison had a real gift for writing straight up melodic romance obsessed pop songs.
My favorite song from this short lived band.
This is an awesome song
I first heard this song on the stairs of a guy I had a crush on. He was sitting there, strumming it on his guitar. In the 90's every college boy had a guitar. I ended up crushing on the song more than him.
You made the right choice.
Brings back 90's memories loved International Pop Overthrow...love this song RIP JIM!
They played this for me as an encore at Cattle Annie’s on my birthday in 1997! Still listen to it all the time!❤
Saw these guys in Champaign a few times in the 90's. Great live band.
This song chokes me up every.single.time. RIP Jim.
Still diggin this song years later.

Beautifully crafted pop song. Underrated songwriters.
NEVER GETS OLD!

My all time fav Material Issue song.
I hope The Killers record this officially. The original is unbeatable, but Brandon did a great job of covering Jim.
Love this song! ♥
RIP Jim Ellison (April 18, 1964 - June 20, 1996), aged 32
You will be remembered as a legend.
how did i forget about material issue??????? they are fabulous!!!
Such a great forgotten band.
Saw them at Mississippi nights the night before they opened for inx and they were so loud bur so good
these guys truly wrote songs of love &heartbreak!!!!Ted&Mike are getting together in memory of Jim in Chicago to do The International PoP Overthrow Music Fest.

I used to love these guys bqck when I was 16... how time flies!
+Roberto Maldonado Me too...still like them.
Only 58,069 views what a shame, real music not computers doing the sounds.
My friends saw them at Chicago Petrillo Band Shell back then.
Takes me back. Wow
Ment Jim at Surf Club Ortley Beach, NJ summer tour of 1994... a every day guy......
Timeless... takes me back... ♥ ♥
My favorite band

I remember this from Poison Ivy, great movie! And this is a great song.
Great song and brilliant video!
Soooo, fucking, great.
Wtf- who gave this a thumbs down?
And the ones Kim didn’t wait on.
One of my favortie songs by them, but then again there aren't many I dislike

Such a cynical song and so very perfect.
kickass

background scenes look to be of the Art Institute and Michigan Ave. in Chicago
I would love for you to do one of " Avery good Idea" it's a great song by them too.

My gimmick was to be the only guy on campus with a 12-string guitar.
cool I see you got a lot of use out of that bass Ted lol
All their vids had beautiful women. Alternative before grunge ruined alternative. 😍
International POP Overthrow.... just saying the named an album about being pop

Anyone who thinks this song is romantic has never listened to the lyrics or read the title.
it is romantic because it means there wouldn't be one
@@jannahoney no, it means he’s looking forward to telling the first lie, He’s chomping at the bit.
