If it wasn't for that got damn god forsaken rubberbanding AI, this game would be even better. Doing a playthrough with this game 21 years later almost had me throwing my controller over random moments like this, one little mistake, and you get passed because the AI ALWAYS catches up.
It's because it's a kiddie game. Gotta trick the kiddies into thinking they are better than they are while giving the experienced the 'feel' of a challenge. Everyone gets tricked.

One thing you guys can do with these later races is to remove upgrades from your car. The CPU cars will match your class so everyone will be downgraded. You'll still have to win the race, but the overall game speed will be slower reducing the chance of a catastrophic late race crash.
The most insane part to me is that it wasnt the pavement like someone mentioned, it were the train tracks. I spent so much time sussing the physics on my neon-only run to see what i can just wallgrind and slam into without losing too much lead or speed, and it is always, always the train tracks that send the car doing flips

Here's a free tip how to easily pass 6 and 7 "Laps of hell": just instal stock engine, transmission, ECU and turbo on your car Yes, it may sound stupid, but it really helps
Yeah it's that backwards tuning that makes enemies also a lot slower. Whenever I had issues I installed all tier 1 upgrades on an MX-5 win every single race like that.
I remember myself during school years, thinking "Boy, all the fellas are into this one particular Need for Speed game, say it's a whole lot of fun.", but then I actually tried it and realized it's basically about riding in circles over and over, with barely anything happening. No combat like in Mario Kart and no over-the-top crashes as was in Burnout... It's just... driving around and being scared to for not cutting a corner right because you'll have to restart as the result. It's like Death Stranding - lot's of buzz, but essentially a game about being chronically bored and fooling yourself with somewhat-present tension of screwing up.
It oozes with style tho, more so than those other games. And drag races where the train would hit you from off screen out of absolutely fucking nowhere. There's no better feeling than having it happen once, restart, remember where it was, braking just before getting there and seeing the AI being yeeted out of the atmosphere by it. XD

The tram tracks are also dangerous in the inverse direction. I had a comical moment of synchronized spinning into the wall with a CPU opponent once (so they're not immune to them), but luckily on the first lap.
