otto reading aegon for filth the entire episode was iconic and hilarious and as certified otto hater actually had me loving him this episode!
Otto has no leg to stand on tho. He was testing Aegon's sanity by parading around Jahaerys's mutilated body out in public. Aegon's actions afterwards to execute all the rat-catchers were as much his fault as it was Criston's and Aegon's.
Otto only cares the innocent ratcatchers died coz it happened publicly. Now that his plan to garner sympathy and striking fear of Rhaenyra into the hearts of the lords is foiled, he is pissed. The real reason Otto is mad is because his puppet king is not being a good puppet to him.
@@happilyevernever4289agreed
As did I it was brilliant acting the whole episode Rhaenyra an Daemon, Rhaenys an Corleys luved their scene an beautiful Jaecerys an Baela
It was definitely nice to see someone putting Aegon in his place BUT I was also so annoyed at it being Otto because like putting him on the throne, and in fact his mother’s marriage and therefore his very existence, were orchestrated by Otto. What did he honestly expect??
Otto is just neurotic-he gets mad at criston for sending cargyll to kill Rhaenyra, while he literally just asked Harold westerling to do the same thing last season.😂 Either the writers or Otto are just dumb
Otto is REALLY foolish in one way tho- he really thought he as the grandad and Alicent as the mommy were gonna be able to control a 21 year old boy they put on the throne lol.
@@taytayqueen7024 with a freaking dragon and no prep forreal from anyone😂😂😂😂
This show is a show about imperfect people (like every one is). His flaw was blindly wanting his grandson on the throne no matter the cost. Now he knows he can't control him and it backfired. It makes for incredible character development and complexity
@@thenickfoxx Yes, I’m aware lol. But you have to admit it’s a pretty obvious thing to miss. Especially considering how Aegon was behaving for years. It was pretty obvious that dude was out of control 😂 but idm cause Aegon is genuinely funny
The couldn't control him on the simple things. Now they know it's hard to control a dog once you put a crown on its head@taytayqueen7024
@@taytayqueen7024 oh yeah for sure, seeing this backfire in his face is awesome. I'm sure it was willful ignorance on his part aswell lol
I didn’t know the word “Trifling” existed in HoTD times, but I’m glad it does cause Otto had me rolling!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Otto (the writers) unleashing that word from his mouth catapulted even more multicultural relatability into the HOTD universe. Not because the word belongs to a certain culture, more so because the word *spans* cultures. Everyone has had a moment where trifling is the best word to describe someone’s behavior.
Agreed. It had me rolling too.
@@co08mtrifling is an extremely old word with roots to 14th century France
@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 yes. Hence the multiculturalism aspect as it is currently used today in AAVE and slang in general. So while it is fitting for him to use it, as it is of an earlier time, the word still strikes a chord with today’s audiences because of the way that it is used in modern slang.
@@co08m you and I both know your comment implied “trifling” refers to “a certain culture” 😏
Dragons are better than souped up sports cars in most respects
THANK YOU for defending Rhaenys not murdering the greens. I see this topic in my feeds almost daily and it annoys me to no end, so it’s refreshing to hear someone saying it was the right decision.
It was the right decision for her. It was not her battle and not her war, she would have been a Kinslayer for nothing.
This was between Rhaenyra and the Hightowers Otto and Alicent and their puppet king who broke his strings Aegon.
If Rhaenys killed them it would not have secured Rhaenyra's place as queen and worse for Rhaenys it could be viewed as her making a play for the throne for herself because she was passed over 'the queen who never was'
Rhaenys was her fathers heir and he should have been king but because he died first she was passed over for her uncle who also died, then it was between her son Laenor with her being regent and Viserys council chose viserys.
Viserys further insulted Rhaenys by marrying Alicent. So people would have veiwed Rhaenys killing the hightowers as vengence
The problem for me and I think most people wasn't the lack of murdering the greens, it was more due to the fact that she killed dozens of other people, if not more, and wounded probably hundreds with her "epic" exit. It was stupid, and not how it happened in the books (not that I care that much except here it makes way less sense). If Rhaenys saw fit to massacre the smallfolk, perhaps she may have at least ended the war prematurely as well
She probably doesn't care that much, as most Nobles don't, but it certainly puts her in a worse light and its annoying the show never addressed it
@@curranfrank2854 Was there another way for her to get out?
It is more on the Hightowers the people got hurt. they didn't hold the coronation in the throne room with the Iron throne, it was a slap dash hasty coronation.
Until she came up through the floor would Rhaenys have even known there were people above her?
I'd be more annoyed with the gold cloaks who were closing the doors and keeping the crowd of people trying to get out in with the angry dragon
@@n.jboltz599she was swept along with and in the crowd before slipping away to mount her dragon, so she was fully aware that the small folk had been herded in there. I’m not fully disagreeing with you, but saying she was unaware of their presence is just wrong.
@@curranfrank2854i think its more to show how a westerosi noble (and more specifically a targaryen) puts far more emphasis on being labelled a kinslayer rather than actually killing people
Bravo. I thoroughly agree with your assessment that one of Viserys' biggest mistakes was concentrating so much on Rhaenyra that he ignored his children with Alicent. Aegon and Aemond were ignored by both parents. Had they grown up with more parental involvement, they might have been better men.
Daemon is a textbook sociopath, while Aegon isn't. But he's getting there!
Aegon is a textbook sociopath too, he's just less physically violent toward men than Daemon. Aegon is hyper sexual to the point of sexual assault (S1), where Daemon was shown to have issues performing sexually. Aegon gambles & bullies his little brother (interpersonal violence). Not all sociopaths engage in physical violence, the typical sociopath is self-destructive due to their lack of self-control.
The new song absolutely SLAPS! Love it so much. Love the Hightower model too.
Good summary David.
16:43 “it’s probably tough being the husband of the queen” I dunno, isn’t this like his third lifetime playing that role? You think he’d be used to it 😂
fair
Aegon says he is king and daemon acts like he is one
These actors are absolutely KILLING it, every single episode!! Rys knocked it out of the park this episode- but so did nearly EVERY actor on the show! I’m so pleased with all of the talent and hard work that’s gone into the making of HOTD. I’m crazy in love with Emma D’arcy… if I was single and quite a bit younger, I’d definitely want to hang out with them. :) ha ha. Also, Daemon is so nuanced and well acted…. I just want to grab Heleana and her kids away from all of those crazy Greens. Phia needs all the awards for her performance. can’t wait to see the wild shiz Aemond and Aegon will get up to next episode. Please, someone, take all power away from Larys and Criston Cole. Please. Remarry off Alicent to a decent man that will please her. Additionally, Rest Easy to our fallen friends: the twins, My Man Beesbury, Luc, and that sweet baby Jacerys. Oh yeah and Rhaenys and Corlys…. They’re sweet. Can’t imagine being that mentally stable after losing ALL of your children (as far as they know) I’m even enjoying Jace and Baela as a couple. Anyway, there is my two cents. For whatever that’s worth. In my opinion, this show is just incredible. Thank you for breaking it all down @DavidLightbringer 💚
Damn. I love your scripted stuff so much.
Do you think viewers are foolish enough to trust Raenyra and others of the show to be ethical, goody goody characters in the show when nearly all of the characters are unhinged "dragons?" We are watching "House of the Dragons." They are all trying to kill their immediate family. Raenyra IS trying to kill her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Etc.
Don't be naive, people. All of the characters are evil. Don't get angry at the writers when you learn this. It's part of the story. Don't take it personally or you will be let down.
I suppose the show is prepared for backlash. This type of show brings emotion to people. This means the writers were successful.
DLB fan comments are the best comments! This is yet another of Dave's excellent expos on aspects of the human condition (in this case maturity) which resonates deeply. I'm also very much looking forward to the next Lore update on dragon dreams.
I was thinking Daemon being the husband of the Queen must be hard just like it was for Prince Philip. And then I remembered, “Oh yeah, Matt Smith was him, too.” So uh, pretty experienced actor in this regard, lol!
I'm glad you watch stuff like that enough to see that😊
I couldn’t hate him as Prince Phillip either, even when he was dogging out the Queen.
@@Maegorsteats great username!
I also like the irony of both characters failing to regard their legacy in teaching their sons who will inherit the crown, showing ironic preference to their eldest daughters. There are of course big differences in the characters but definitely see the Rouge Prince character a familiar archetype to the audience. Could definitely see Matt Smith playing Richard III here soon too.
Daemon isn't team black out of love for Rhaenyra, he's team black out of hate for the greens.
correct imo
I do feel that Daemon has had genuine love for Rhaenyra though. Looking back to when she was younger when he went away, he would bring her back gifts and they are the only two Targaryen's that spoke to each other in high valyrian - I definately feel there was chemistry between them early on.
And he wanted to marry Rhaenyra back then - he asked for her hand but Vicerys was having none of it. Which is weird considering he let his two children marry each other so clearly incest wasn't an issue for him. Tbh if he had done that at the time, there probably wouldn't have been the Dance with Dragons as they would have had legitimate children and Rhaenyra wouldn't have had the bastards comments thrown in her face every 5 mins.
Also team black represents defending his brothers throne/his would be throne/Targyrean rule. He’s in it for the right reasons imo.
Naah he is team black because he loved Viserys and he wants revenge for what he thinks they did to him.
good ol enemy's enemy = friend
Otto realizing that the purpose of the last 20 years of his life was wasted in pursuit of installing a villain is just marvelous
truly amusing
Aegon is not Villain none of TG is not just like none of TB are heroes they are or should be grey this show is just biased and it showed with their adaptation of B&ch
@@queenxx1690 I wouldn't say 'biased' as much as it's working within the traditional narrative structure of a central 'protagonist' (a focal character, not a value judgement of morality). As ASOIAF book readers, we are long used to having all grey characters working with and against each other with no clearly defined "good guys."
The typical TV storytelling model suggests that audiences get more involved in the story if they have a 'main' character to introduce them to the fictional world.
Futhermore, I think team Green has had some outstanding moments both in s1 and even more so far in s2! Alicent has had some of the best character moments in the last 2 episodes. I felt so much pain for Halaena and despised Daemon after E1 and I found Aegon trolling Tyland in the small council to be very droll.
@@queenxx1690 " none of team green are villains" really? Do what do you call people who usep the throne, imprison and kill noble lords who don't side with them , leaves the king to rot for weeks before crowning aegon, commit kin slaying, burn the shit out of the river lands , kill thousands of innocent people, murders an entire noble house unprovoked, commits the sack of tumblton ?
Meanwhile the worst thing the blacks do is blood and cheese, daemon and rhenyrea are not the only members of team black , yiu whine and complain about bias but your ridiculous comment on this video and other videos show your biased for the greens and are blinded by that , both sides were never equally bad the Greens are villains and always were .
He really had a…huh maybe Viserys WASNT crazy when he didn’t make Aegon his heir
You only talked about the brothel scene briefly, but something I noticed is (imho) the shape and feel/atmosphere of the brothel room with Aemond naked and curled up was that of a fetus in a womb. The room is very round, small, and snug; and he's literally in the fetal position. He has to outsource and literally pay for the feelings of maternal safety/comfort that he didn't get from Alicent. Freud would have a field day with Aemond (and Aegon).
Exactly!
Boy oh boy, he would have had the fun of his life with Harenhall Daemon
Otto was so tired of everyone. This man should be on a cruise ship to the Summer Isles.
I think the biggest idiots are the people attacking the actors. Namely Fabien Frankel.
were all surrounded aren't we
At least it means he's doing an excellent job portraying a hateful character. Like Jack Gleeson and Lena Headey in GoT
@@efrent-vr3bm 🤦♂️
@@fernandocorona5411 They're right you know. It's more a bad reflection on certain elements of the audience for being unable to differentiate between a real person and a character they portray. But it has been this way for a long time for some reason. I was just reading about how Leonard Nimoy had to change his hair when not filming Star Trek. Fans would see his Vulcan haircut and swarm him to the point he was afraid he or others would be seriously hurt in the press. He actually stopped appearing in character in public because it got that out of control. I can understand that in the 60s, but with how modern media lets us connect with celebrities more directly, it surprises me we still have to deal with personal attacks on actors. Like..you can go talk with them on social media or watch any number of interviews with them and see the performer is a really nice, talented person
@@ThommyofThenn why can’t people just say “good job at making me hate your character.” Lol
The Otto scene was great. I like how he called Cole's plan a "prank'.
That was the best scene imo. Probably because I'm TB and don't like Mom and Dad fighting lol but Rhys nailed it.
I agree his use of that word was PERFECT. "I'm going to impersonate my twin" definitely IS a prank.
The part that killed me was Otto telling Aegon “don’t you think of your father?”. We often forget that yes his ambition and lust for power put Aegon on the throne, but he really did love Viserys like a brother. So then he has the bitter realization “he was right about you”, it just mirrors Rhaenrya’s realization with Daemon “you’re pathetic”. Fantastic episode in my opinion.
I like that Corlys goes for the bdsm
Did he? That’s not love. Aemond killed viserys grandson and all Otto said was “he erred but its fine”. He might have admired him, but someone who loves another would never do what he did.
@@Darkness-ie2ylbro wrong thread?
@@lizflamma4252 Yea i would say he liked Viserys, not loved. But Otto didn't think it was fine to kill Luke. He just thought that the reason for it was a teen getting back at another teen for a wrongful act but taking it too far was due to his rage intensified by his youth, rather than believing Aemond was just psychopathic (since he thinks Aemond killed him on purpose) Plus, you do realize Aemond himself is Viserys's son? Not just some distant relative.
@@rexibhazoboa7097 his response to a teenager angry bc the other didn’t get punished is NOT PUNISHING the grown man that just killed a 10 year old boy.
I absolutely love that Otto had the realization of “HUH, maybe Viserys was right to make Rhaenyra his heir. WHO KNEW?
The thing is, that was Even Otto‘s idea, to keep Daemon away - and he was probably right. His error was to think Rhaenyra would be bad too - or more precisely think Aegon was better.
@@LarthVI think he liked that he could rule through Viserys and wanted to do the same through Aegon, he just didn't account for him being similar to his older sister(ie having their own opinions and being able to say no) 😂
Darth Larys is now canon.
Shit, even sounds like it'd fit.
Matt Smith's characters: it's difficult to be the queen's consort.
Have to admit, he's really good at it
Not May Smith first rodeo in this role. The Crown as Prince Philip
Rhaenyra was right. Viserys wasn’t scared of daemon. He couldn’t trust him.
Otto definitely influenced Viserys lack of trust in Daemon imo.
@@SaltyNico920that is a great point. But even with Otto babbling in viserys’s ear about daemon. Viserys knew his brother. After growing up with his brother I don’t think Otto would be able sway his opinion either way. Daemon is untrustworthy.
Otto reaped what he sowed. He constantly undermined Viserys wishes, whether that was under the directive of his brother or not, this is what it got you. How could he watch Aegon grow and think he would be anywhere close to a good ruler?
yep
too busy scheming
Rhaenyra needs to make Rhaenys her hand
YES!!!
The look on Otto’s face when he’s told Criston Cole had taken action lololol
Aegon forgets that the opinion of the smallfolk is a huge part of the war, especially the propaganda portion of the war. If you lose them, you’ve lost half of the war.
Which is ironic because last episode he used the small folk to get otto to back off during the throne room scene when he was talking to Hugh but now he couldn't care less about the small folk.
tbf they couldve created a story to soften the blow. Say the ratcatchers were all conspired in one way or another or smthn
@@rexibhazoboa7097EXACTLY instead otto comes in pissing and moaning like aegon said rhaenyra was the rightful queen and hes a usurper
Aemond is suffering from a severe Oedipus complex. Which explains all his odd behaviors
True. I don't think it was a mistake that the show runners hired a talented AND conventionally beautiful actress like Olivia Cooke to be the mother of two messed up sons. They wanted you to think Oedipal Complex and have many of the men in the audience go, "Yep, It's sick like all things with the Targs, but I understand it when mom is that hot.
@@LeeBeeDeeTree51 it's honestly so disturbing. Like they're not subtle and even Olivia's sex scenes feel so wrong. I'm not sure how to explain since her and Fabien are two objectively good looking people but it feels actually disgusting. It makes me hate seeing both Alicent and Aemond on screen when in season one I found their characters to have the most interesting dynamic and strongest portrayals😢
(Hate seeing Cole on screen at all times but that's cause he's just an ass)
I didn't even think about the family dysfunction going that many generations. Its obvious now that you highlighted it, but my mind kept focusing on Alicent abd her kids that i didnt think about Otto's second son syndrome. Wow. Is it just me, or did anyone else think of Michael Scott yelling "I declare bankruptcy!" when Argon was declaring war?
.. time to make a meme for the server 😂
23:16 Emma is a damn fine actor. I loved their face of realization.
I don't understand the "the queen who didn't" argument. She killed what - hundreds of people by breaking through the floor with her dragon? The woman killed more innocent people than Bundy, Dahmer and Gacy combined. How is that mature, or a sign of restraint? Also, her action of not killing team green could be seen as short-sighted. This is Westeros and everybody who had been at court must have known that a civil war was inevitable. Otto himself, a character you credited with foresight and restraint, said so. Both sides know what harm dragons do to civilians, when unleashed in war. Just look at the field of fire situation. Wouldn't it have been more merciful to kill a couple of nobles, when she should have known that full war would break out anyway? A civil war I might add, that can only be ended by eradicating one side, unless you want their offspring to start new rebellions. Look at the Blackfyre Rebellions for evidence. I fully agree with your assessment of Aegon. But I think that Daemon was right to call a war council. Ravens had to be sent, so team Black's Allies could be rallied. I don't understand why Rhaenyra is mad at him about that. He IS her second in command and she was in labour and she was in no condition to act at the time. I think it was her right as ruler to countermand his orders, but still, a good leader has to be able to rely on their subordinates.
I think we in the audience are expected to simply see Rhaeny's stomping small-folk with her Dragon as a 'bad-ass' moment and she didn't kill Aegon etc even though that would the logical thing to do in that spot, is simply because the plot didn't need her too. The fact a few episodes later they're trying to sell me on the idea Aegon killing some rat-catchers is something the small-folk are going to be upset all of sudden about is stupid too me, when they've established mass-murder won't even be remarked upon.
I think maybe they were only injured not killed.
@@waltonsmith7210 I find that higly unlikely. There is a) the huge kinetic energy needed to break through a stone floor (btw Rhaenys should have been crushed, she literally got between a rock and a hard place) and b) the fall must have been a long one, because the halls on the lower level must be high enough to house those dragons aaand c) debris
@@blinkusfishus2052this is such a good point
I gotta say I started this season rooting for no one in specific but now I feel like I’m liking Rhaenyra more and more each episode
The Targs have an issue with entitlement. That's what makes some of them so cruel & destructive. "It's mine, I want it." Should be their house motto. No concept of actually ruling & serving the realm. The show has introduced this idea that Aegon the first somehow knew of the upcoming Long Night & that was his motivation for invading Westeros. But if that's true, subsequent Targ rulers didn't get the memo. The knowledge was not passed down. Daemon, Criston & Aegon are all immature & hot headed & reactive with no ability to think 3 moves ahead & consider consequences. Having no empathy makes you blind to other's motives since all you can do is project your own id onto others & assume they think like you. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
"it's mine, I want it" hahah CACKLING over here
"yes Dave it's delicious, that's why I'm stealing it"
@@DavidLightbringer take it, I give it freely m'lord
"A common saying but not their official words."
Otto was on fire!!! 😂🔥💯
The thing about Otto I constantly ponder is whether he actually thought Rhaenyra was unfit because she was a woman or if he just completely overestimated the misogyny in the realm, thinking that if a woman should sit the throne, regardless how fit she was, everybody would rise in rebellion the next day.
YES! YES!! YES!!! THE MOST DANGEROUS FORCE IN WESTEROS IS INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY
“Instead he did the dragon lord equivalent of peeling out in his trans am” Love this analogy
When Otto said that he didn't want to hear about Alicent's sins I think that he was trying to say that they're already forgiven (judging by his voice & facial expression) but it just didn't come across the way he intended. He likely already knows about the affair from his reaction to Alicent & Criston being together in other scenes.
Otto comes across to me as being an emotionally incompetent but loving family man.
😂 I took it as "no no no you're my baby girl daughter I don't need to hear it" but I almost feel like Alicent wanted to talk about it and get the same reassurance.
Edit: my husband pointing out that Alicent also has the upper hand and would be in a position to give Otto back his job if they exposed Crispy coal.
No he didn’t want to hear it lol
Nah, it's cuz he doesn't want to hear it so he can pretend there's no indiscretion. just like viserys did with rhaenyra that irritated otto so much lol
Naw, he just didn’t care. He has bigger problems than Alicent’s “feelings”. He’s never cared about those.
@@LoveK1that’s exactly what I thought. It seemed clear as a bell that that’s what he meant. Why no one else on any platform has said the same is baffling to me.
Haven’t watched the video yet- but I just wanted to say how happy I am to open UA-cam this morning and see a new David Lightbringer video!! Best Friday ever!
I really enjoyed Otto's scenes in this episode - because he's at fault for his own problems. Aren't we all tbh? His scenes were hilarious. And pretty satisfying
I laughed so hard
I’m back to watch and give my thoughts!
- episode 2 definitely had those key characters details we needed to see to understand why the next events take place the way they do.
-it’s wild to acknowledge the point that Rhaenyra and Otto are the most level headed in the show at this point 😂
-Girl Nettles could’ve used the whole “Daemon being entirely immature-with dash points” thing in her roast the other night
-people don’t learn from their mistakes when they constantly run from them. They learn by picking up the pieces.
-Rhaenyra: *says one things to Daemon*
Daemon: *freaks out due to his own self doubt and anxiety*
-hot take: Alicent was more emotionally intelligent as a young girl (like the scene where her and Rhaenyra are in the temple talking lighting candles) than she is as an adult woman and mother
-“How dare you build a Lego city”
-Hot take 2: Rhaenys would’ve been a good queen, keeping Corlys in line ya know
-Rhaenyra really saw through the bullshit in this episode. Like she really has enough going on and still had the backbone to put Daemon on blast and let him know she was sick of fixing him
-I came into this show in season 1 wanting to love Daemon and be a real “stan” but every time we see him he’s doing something fucked up
-Otto: “…his DIGnity…”🥴
-even after shitting on the council and Rhaenyra and marrying Alicent anyway, Viserys still feels guilty as hell about it and misses Aemma to the point of ignoring his children with Alicent
-🎶Daemon 🎶knows 🎶best ❌
-Hot take 3: Daemon knew how much could go wrong with his little rat and cheese plan. The seed (idea) of offing baby J instead of Aemond may have already been there or it may have been planted when they ask him for a 2nd target, but I think the more he thought about it, the more he hoped something would go wrong. He hoped they’d have to go for their second target.
-Hobart has been telling Otto what to do for his whole life. Then he came and helped Otto implode himself and get fired by giving him the hardest command of all “do your job”
-Aegon thinks him being a King makes him more important than everyone in the realm. But actually being King makes him responsible for the welfare of the realm, but he only considers himself.
-Hot take 4: if Helaena had just screamed one time, one time nice and good, things might’ve ended a little differently
-Otto trying to be Tywin just can’t
- so pumped for episode 3. I have no idea what to look forward to. Up till now I’ve basically known what big events will come up but I’m really in the dark with this one and I’m so psyched!!
yeah I decided not to focus on the issue of what exactly Damon said off camera to blood and cheese because it doesn't matter, and that's why they didn't show us. It doesn't matter what he said, and no one besides him would ever know. what matters is what he did, and what the result was. That's literally all that matters
I support Daemon's rights. And his wrongs.
Rhys & Paddy are such heavy hitters as actors. So glad they were on this show & no one is a cartoon villain or hero. Great psychological analysis LML. These characters are a Freudian wet dream 😂
Perfect timing for this!!! I needed a new video to watch 🤩 Thank you!
I actually felt kinda bad for Aemond in this episode. I don’t think he really meant to kill his nephew but he should have thought abt the consequences before he hopped on flying Godzilla to troll him. Cuz Vhagar gone stand on business every time and now we’re here. lol *sigh* “ill considered! Trifling!” 😂
I have a question: Blood dropped a torch and it focused on it rolling under a table while still being lit, I assumed that'd have some significance in Ep2. Why was that such a focal point of the scene?
Good question
Perhaps it will soon be resolved at some point throughout the season. Ofttimes these things can be called back upon 1, 2, even 4+ episodes later.

I mean the only thing wrong is that we haven't seen the cost of the event, but then again Otto mentioned how poorly it went as a bad omen that is affecting how people see Aegon. I'm sure some people hate Rhaenys because of it too, I'd like to see that reaction in KL in a future episode.
But Rhaenys is an elitist, so it makes sense that she weighs the lives of her kin who are royals differently than the commoners. Still I agree it didn't necessarily fit her character to kill so many
Like David said. That moment hasnt even come to its resolution. How could you possibly come to that conclusion when it hasn't even been paid off yet? Foresight is one hell of a thing.
😂 I saw it as Targaryen being Targaryen, those hundreds of lives didn't matter for them. Probably this act, along with blood and cheese, will fall into Rhaenyra's lap when she comes to power. They will use it against Rhaenyra for sure, dealing with Aegon's mistakes as king, then dealing with her own mistakes will eventually lead to the Dragon Pit incident.
It was probably more some dozens or hundreds, but yeah, still the single bloodiest event so far by a long shot…
Daemon is a dark character but I will always see Larys and Criston Cole as much darker.
Whooee! We have enough DARK in this story to shut down the entire Eastern Seaboard!! 😮
But.. Daemon just ordered a hit on a baby with no remorse.
Do you think Larys had the guards removed so Blood & Cheese could carry out their dark deeds unhindered? And since the eyebrows maid heard Helaena’s prophecy and saw Blood before disappearing- will Larys realize Helaena is a dragon dreamer and how will he use that?
I think it's possible he removed the guards. not sure about the the rest
This episode made me respect Otto. I dont like him at all and i feel he is very much partially to blame for this whole war and family turmoil. But i respect him as a politician. Also something i think you overlooked about Otto's relationship with Aegon was his abuse of Aegon, i site the part of Laena's furneral episode, were we see him hitting a young drunk Aegon. So id say that part of why Aegon rejects Otto as an advisor is that he realized he is more powerful then him. But i also did love Otto's realization of Aegon's unfitness to the position
I didn't realize it was milk of the poppy. I thought it was regular milk to symbolize Aemond still being a child needing mothering. Did anybody else think that?
Whether it’s milk or milk of the poppy I think the symbolism stands. Everything in that scene just screams lost little boy looking for mommy.
@@WeaselSoup-su5yu Agreed
it still did symbolize that
@DavidLightbringer Absolutely, and it adds a whole deeper dimension to it. Thanks for pointing that out
Aegon and Aemond give me mixed feelings.
Aegon has done monstrous things and has no thought towards the impact of his actions, but I still have low-key sympathy for him. He wants to feel loved and accepted, so he aquiesses the demands of his family in the hope that they will eventually provide him with the assurance and affection that he needs, but they never do.
Aemond is an emotional represser (which has tragic consequences). Aemond was cursed by his family for claiming Vhagar, even though he did nothing wrong in that, and his assailant(s) were never acknowledged as doing wrong either. The whole morality of that situation was flipped on its head, so of course, Aemond is angry.
Makes me wonder what these two young men would have been like with different parents. 😢
I think Otto knows exactly what Alicent is up to with Krispy and said he doesn't want to hear about it because who would want to know that about their daughter.
I think the point about being surrounded by stupidity is really good. Each character believes that and I would argue they are all correct. I lost a lot of respect for most of the main characters in that episode. I feel like most of the drama was manufactured. The whole thing of Jaehaerys death being used as a propaganda victory fell flat with me. They literally just killed Rhaenyra's son. At least Rhaenyra has some plausible deniability. Aemond definitely killed Jace. As a book reader it is so different than how I expected it to go. If anything family tragedy and war usually unites people on the same side. I wouldn't expect all the in fighting when the battle lines are so clearly drawn.
I mean yes they killed Rhaenyra’s son and if it was Aemond who was murdered than they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on but it now appears that Rhaenyra has taken revenge on an innocent little boy and decapitating him at that- plus the child is her nephew. There is no justification. It drags her down to their level or lower, even, as Lucerys had a dragon and was old enough to participate in the war at least (not that is justifies Aemond’s actions at all) but answering that by slaughtering a small, defenseless child in their bed isn’t going to make you look any better than Aemond that’s for sure.
@@SacrificingNothing If you are going to say Rhaenyra killed Aegon's son then you can say that Aegon killed Rhaenyra's son. The chapter in Fire and Blood is called a son for a son. That is the justification for it. It is not as if Rhaenyra herself went to the red keep and decapitated the child. For all anyone knows it could have been some team black loyalist within the red keep that did it on their own initiative in order to curry favor, which is what it looks like when you find out it was a gold cloak that did it. It just isn't believable to me that people would be so easily manipulated into having sympathy for the greens in this situation when it is clear that they struck first when Aemond very publicly killed Rhaenyra's child who went to Storms End alone to negotiate. Jace clearly stated he was not there to fight in front of many witnesses. He then left and was chased down and murdered by who in the books is forever known after as Aemond the Kinslayer. It is such a blight on any pretense of virtuosity the greens might have had. The show almost ignores the significance of that event entirely. Also I don't think it makes sense for Rhaenyra to have a big blow up about it with Daemon. Her son was just murdered. Speaking from some experience in this matter, when someone's son is murdered you want revenge and you don't care about protocol and bureaucratic nonsense. You have already paid the ultimate price and you want retribution at any cost. She knows Daemon is ruthless and conniving. That is a big reason why she got with him. She wanted to have him on her side because they thought it might come to war. The idea that they would have big blow up about him hatching this whole scheme whether the correct person got killed or not is kind of crazy. It is war at this point. Messed up things are going to happen. She has to know her siblings will have to die for the war to end. Furthermore the battlelines are already drawn for social, political, and economic reasons that have little to do with Aegon's family. If anything Aegon is now weakened in the view of his allies because in the show he no longer has a clear heir. I think it would have made more sense for team black to own it. Treason against the crown will be answered swiftly and mercilessly. A son for a son. It's an incredible display of power for their side which up until this point looks kind of weak having very few allies.
Here we go again, doing Daemon dirty. Doesn't it bother you that we never in the show hear him actually say things he's accused of saying, but only through mouth of people who have some vested interest to hurt him? How is Rhaenyra the smart one in the room🤯??? Daemon correctly identified the problem: she's just like Viserys - weak, not patient but procrastinating, pushing away her biggest and most faithful ally, asset AND husband, doesn't listen to what he's telling her... and on top of it: selfish! (only her feelings matter, complaining how she was giving birth to that stillborn child alone - no thought for Daemon's feelings - perhaps fearing he'll lose Rhaenyra the same way he lost Lena and couldn't stand to watch it once again... plus it was wise to start preparing for defence). Rhaenyra asked for Aemond to be killed, Daemon tried to make it happen as best it was possible and *didn't strike a child* - only wasn't aware that that slut Miseria gave him bad info (not knowing just how many times she effed him over and ratted to Otto, to widen the chasm between brothers; which, from his PoV he didn't have reason to suspect, since he never actually did anything to hurt her, nothing bad happened to her because of Daemon's actions, and he only knew that she helped Otto find Aegon, plus gave him some unrelated information. Bitch lied to him.). So, all of that because Daemon made a mistake, i.e. trusting Miseria's info while trying to do what Rhaenyra asked for (with no time to properly vet the assassins)... and because it was bad PR for her?! He even tried to hug her, she pushed him away and insulted him. What was he to do? Play a soyboy? In the end, she even sides with Miseria against Daemon, and she's the smart one in the room? Are we forgetting that Daemon gave her everything she asked of him since they re-connected at Lena's funeral, that Daemon was the one who first argued to spare Lenor's life, she would've been fine killing him, and if Rhaenyra didn't figure out by now that Daemon has a bit of a difficulty expressing love in words, but shows it in deeds - please explain how is she smart one in the room?
i explained it in my video, she's right about everything she said. Did you watch it?
like, did you watch past the first 2 min? it's very simple - Daemon has been following her only to achieve his own ends, without actually respecting her. that explains why he's always insubordinate, which NO leader can tolerate. So she's right about everything she's saying, and she saw through his mask and got him to admit what he really thinks. Hence she's the smart one, and he's got his head up his own ass and is undermining his own war effort and his own leader. As I explained
@@DavidLightbringer Yes I did. I watched almost the entire video (until about minute 27 when there was no more Daemon to be seen and story turned to Greens). Also, just before I re-watched the episode and that conversation. So, I simply disagree. I don't see Daemon the same way, nor do I want to change him. He's protecting his family against the Greens (plus taking revenge on Otto, who's done him so much wrong, so that is fine by me) and he's a true Targaryen, a dragon, willing to do what needs to be done. I'm not judging him by standards of modern psychology or morality, but by the pseudo-medieval world he operates in (with some of the book influence). I guess that's just a not-so-young historian in me.
@@Marlboro-lights1 You are asking me about emotional investment into the show? When you're the one who chose avatar and a screen name after a character from that show 🤷🏻♀. Anyhow, Daemon is rather similar to great kings (or rulers by different title) and heroes from my country's history, and Otto has quite a few Ottoman Turks-like traits (and that's not a compliment).
Otto and Daemon are two sides of the same coin imo. I’m always curious how people hate Otto but defend Daemon.
This was a very thoughtful analysis. Both action and inaction bear consequence, people! 😅
I agree with most things said but I doubt the argument about Daemon or the blacks having the possibility of hiring the faceless men, considering the history of the latter regarding dragonlords and valyria. As much as it is kinda obvious it wouldn't be the case anyways since we rarely see them actually performing killings in the asoiaf, let alone we hear confirmations they doing those things.
You're the lightbringer as in bringing "light" to so many truths or angles into the Easter eggs I believe geniuses like Martin and King both do. Know their faithful readers or like minds will find all the truths or lore or patterns in their "worlds "!! Thank you.
That one brief scene with Jace and Baela hinted at an inexplicably unexplored avenue in the series. Baela said that sometimes she thinks she hates her father. Well, it's about damned time she said so. Daemon totally ignores his daughters. Always has.
Yes, this takes place at a time when women - especially highborn women - were seen as having very little value other than as baby breeders and marriage partners in political alliances. Still, the man ignored his daughters at their mother's funeral! Yet he made the effort to stick up for Rhaenyra when Vaemond threw shade at her during Laena's eulogy.
He also slept with Rhaenyra on the same day as his wife's funeral. Daemon's first child with Rhaenyra was born very soon after his wife's death and Rhaenyra's husband's death. Beala and Rhaena can count to nine.
What does this say to them other than Daemon didn't love their mother, didn't have any respect for her memory and couldn't wait until her charred bones were cold in her watery grave before he started boinking his niece?
One of the biggest flaws in the TV adaptation has always been that Rhaenys and Corlys remain so loyal to the Targaryens after repeatedly getting the shaft. Leanor dies before getting to be King Consort. Laena is rejected by Viserys as a second wife. Yet Rhaena and Corlys have no suspicion of Daemon and Rhaenyra in the deaths of their children. That coupled with Daemon's inability to parent his daughters because he doesn't care about anyone except Viserys and Rhaenyra, should make Corlys, Rhaenys and their granddaughters wary enough to consider flirting with The Greens.
House of Velaryon behaves like a person in an abusive relationship. They keep getting asked to give money and support to house Targaryen, but keep getting psychologically beat up and disrespected by the Targs. Yet they continue to come back for more.
Yeah I personally think it’s not been addressed as much as it should.
I know in the book, Baela was Daemon’s favourite. There’s even something about him refusing to punish her for sleeping with a boy or something like that. I think Rhaena wasn’t as favoured but I might be wrong. They cut out a scene of him comforting his daughters which I thought was a bit weird.
I understand Rhaenys and Corlys being loyal to the blacks out of the sake of Baela one day being queen but I hope we do get a scene or two of Rhaenys confronting Rhaenyra about Laenor or getting some closure before she dies. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t though :I.
@@hi-ls6lt Yep. I recall that in the book, Bela was written as what we used to be refer to as a "tomboy" or a "wildchild." She loved roughhousing with stable boys. I don't recall her going all the way with a boy but I think they were caught making it to third base. It almost caused the poor boy to lose his hand as punishment. Her father was told about it but didn't seem to care. In fact, he found it amusing. Baela was clearly meant to be a female version of her father.
Yet on the show there is no tomboyish Baela nor any sign of a father/daughter relationship at all. The fact that they cut out the scene of him comforting his daughters after Laena's death makes it appear that the show runners are setting up a distance between dad and daughters on purpose.
You're right, Daemon and Aegon both seem to think they are surrounded by idiots and/or cowards and weaklings. Great video.
Lmao! Dude, u be Psycho-analysing my entire lifestory! 😂😂😂
Great breakdown of the episode, very indepth n entertaining! 🎉
The Elric reference was so very on point
Ashes are a symbol of sorrow.. let’s spill a bucketful..🌋
It would be great if Alt Shift X, Glidus and you made a collab one day
This is an absolutely brilliant video. I agree with your analysis 100%.
AAAAAHHH never been this early! I love your work David Lightbringer!!!
Keep up the great work David Beezy
Daemon flouncing away had James Dean/James from Twin Peaks vibes, with him off sulking on his Harley Dragon. What you runnin' from Daemon? What you got? Frightening how much he reminds me of Boris Johnson.
Aemond is such a droog, you got that spot on. "I'm singing in the Reynes".
The highlight for me, though, was Otto's wtf has Cole done? face. Rhys Ifans is absolute wildfire in this show.
Otto might be the most devious Hand or CEO since the Lehman Bros. He opposed Rhaenerya choosing Sir Criston Cole as King’s guard but he sure knew how to maneuver and use Rhaeneyra’s propensity towards picking her lovers behind her father’s back as scandal and to de-legitimize her claim. Speaking of Rhaeneyra, she has been a terrible politician thus far. None of her marriages have worked out. None of her children have much character or ambition. Team Green is arguably too ambitious and their own worst enemy. Team Black is more like, who wants it? *crickets*
Theres a video by UA-camr named Joe Magician, and he made me think. Do you think Larys knew or could have stopped the murder of the young Prince, but only allowed it to happen because of Alicent "cheating on him"?
yeah i think we talked about that in the postgame. There were NO guards anywhere and it seems like something we were supposed to notice. Larys is the obvious suspect
Great video! Would definitely love to a video on George’s historical inspirations to the Dance specifically too. Otto is so Warwick the Kingmaker coded. I think the tv show is also showing the parallels in modern historians “revealing” the facts about The War of the Roses and how much the winners wrote history (lookin at you Billy Shakes)
Now we’re talking… Praise Be!
Just dropping a comment for the algorithm! Thanks for the new vid!
When I first heard the new Hightower music, I really liked it, but I was a little iffy on it becoming the new opening music. I gotta say I'm really diggin it tho 🗼
Beautiful analysis
I was glad he figured out how much he messed up.
Kin slaying is the worst crime in the 7
👏🏻 “-low” 👏🏻 “mood” 👏🏻 “lighting” 👏🏻 “is” 👏🏻 “good-“ 👏🏻 1st commandment of the neurospicy (un)holy book
I wouldn’t have had a problem with rhaenys wiping out the Hightower branch of targaryens, but at the same time I don’t mind it bc otherwise we wouldn’t have the dance of the dragons
The Trans am joke was really funny, I appreciated that.
I guarantee it whenever some people's heads but hopefully with the picture they get the idea
@13:09 carelessly boss babing when indiscriminately murdering scores of innocent filthy peasants isnt considered a war crime? @13:25 isn’t that precisely what she did?
Otto's face tells all! lol
Aegon: kills all teh ratcatchers
Logical hand: ok lets spin something that they were complicit in the murder of the prince and were again trying another assassination
Otto: time to bitch and moan like a fish mongers wife after he comes home a nanosecond late
I was thinking more along the lines of I am surrounded by A-holes! I am a child of the 80s
You should make a JarJar theory video for like, April Fools or something 😂
Glad I found your channel even if I have accidentally spoiled myself some from it 😅
sorry i try to give warnings where appropriate but yeah I am mostly book-centric in the offseason
Man im excited for tomorrow. I think episode 4 will be better, guessing one particular event will happen.
I'm more excited for the hand necklace than I know I should be.
