I liked the friction between Rhaenyra and Ulf, given what we learned about her in her youth. Despite being princess, she loved acting out and mingling with the smallfolk. Now that she’s invited the bastards into her house and gifted them the power of dragons, she’s seems less forgiving of insubordination.
I love how characters like Christen Cole and Jaime can shift from being some of the most despicable to the most dense and layered characters in this world.
@@BizarreHD I think it might not be possible on film, its like the Godfather but instead of just Michael Corleone every single one of the characters changes dramatically. It is too much info to cover these massive time spans in the asoiaf universe. The way to go might be making a whole show/movie on 1-2 events and dont leave as much out, instead of tackling whole eras and opening too many plotlines.
In season 1 Criston was ashamed of his actions & was ready to kill himself. Season 2 he seems to embrace his depravity while still trying to maintain his honor, but he acknowledges that he’s still a hypocrite for all the things that he’s done.
I genuinely don't see how they're going to fit everything in two more seasons. There is still so much ground left to cover, and season 2 moved so painfully slow. We're halfway through the show and there has been precisely one battle (two if you count the Burning Mill). The show's either going to have to cut out a load of them going forward, which will hurt various characters development, or be incredibly densely packed with battles if it wants to have enough time to wrap things up as well. As much as I loved the first season, some of the choices back then will have very weird consequences going forward. In the book Rhaenyra's younger children, Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys are meant to be 12, 9, and 8 respectively. In the show they look to be little more than toddlers. Unless they drag out the timeline they're going to have a hard time establishing them as actual characters, especially as two of them are pretty important to the story.
Surely the people who once again have to wait two years between seasons of HotD can be normal about having to wait a few weeks for a UA-cam video this thorough.
Show Alicent: Abuses Aegon physically and psychologically his whole life, forces him to be king, doesn't comfort him when he is mourning, berates him when he is at lowest, abandons him when has been scarred despite it being partially her fault, sacrifices him to save her own hide. Why does the show expects me to see her as not evil? Book Alicent is unironically a better person.
It's not great. But Alicent resented having to marry Viserys and has transferred that resentment to her children. At least she's trying to protect Helaena now.
You’re right Guerre. It would be better if she just had values that opposed to Rhaenyra and stuck by them. And for the love of the Gods, don’t forfeit your children’s lives.
Show Alicent is a dumpster fire. Not even someone as vile as Cersei (book and show) would _willingly_ sacrifice one of her children in an attempt to end a war 😂
@@MarvinT0606 a war that she started, the show tries to absolve her of her guilt over the war, but if she had helped Aegon escape none of this would have happened.
More proof that Seasmoke is nearsighted: When arriving at Harrenhall, Seasmoke can be seen circling the castle while Rhaenyra lands. This is due to the fact that Seasmoke can't spot the castle from that height
True. That’s why he was chill with Ser Steffon until he got too close, that was when he finally noticed him. And what he did with Addam was just him getting a closer look.
Schifty, you beautiful bastard. I was worried Glidus went off the deep end and had you strung up Bolton-style. Hope you've been well. Thank you for the video
Something I want to point out that might get lost a small non-fact but Daemon is Bloodraven's paternal great-grandfather. I think it's relevant for character development and why GRRM didn't like Season 2. Because the Old Gods are preying on Daemon's need for control, as they do with Bloodraven, so having arcs where they frame their actions as altruistic and not intrinsically selfish takes away from George's story.
Exactly! The writers seem to have forgotten the absolutely horrid and creepy nature of magic and all those that allow themselves to be used by it in the A Song of Ice and Fire world. None of the gods are good or kind. Not the drowned god, not the old gods, not the red god. The only straight up kind and benevolent gods are the seven, and that's because their most likely made up. Or at least the farthest from their original versions.
For Alys Rivers to be doing this for "the innocents" is wild. The innocents? When have the old gods ever cared about innocent lives? When has Bloodraven ever cared about innocent lives? Bloodraven has a lot of innocent blood on his hands. So do the old gods. All those sacrifices from the Boltons and the Starks of old made to the old gods. It was Queen Alyssane that had to abolish one of the old customs of the 'first night'. Are we mistaking the noble nature of the Starks of today, for that of the Starks of old? The old gods are creepy and kinda savage. All the 'active' gods are ultimately kinda selfish and are only trying to achieve their versions of 'Victory over Evil.' Who that evil is, is not exactly clear. How many people need to be sacrificed to achieve this goal, is also not entirely clear.
This didn’t quite feel like a finale. Last episode should’ve been the finale, and this the first episode of season 3. I’m not sure how I feel about the show right now. I’m excited to see it develop, but even GRRM is not quite happy with Condal and his decision making. Hopefully season 3 is a bit faster but not rushed, they definitely didn’t help themselves with each season being 8 episodes. Love your work Alt!
Can you please make a video about “The Real Stannis Baratheon”. He’s my favorite character in the books and he needs justice for how the show wrote him off like he was nothing Love your videos btw🙌
I just finished a rewatch of the watchmen series and this vid drops. Like literally Angela was stepping on to the pool and I got this notification. What a great day
Just got done reading George’s blog absolutely flaming the show and went to UA-cam to see if any content creators covered it, then immediately got the notification for this video lmao.
"The Queen Who Ever Was" actually is a reference to Ryan Condall apparently shouting "MAH QUEEN" like late GOT Jon Snow every time Rhaenyra was brought up in the writer's room, to which Sarah Hess would enthusiastically applaud every time.
Halaena's power addition is so stupid. She does nothing with it except giving spoilers from the book. No purpose. Even more useless than Bran. The original story about an innocent sweet young woman going crazy from losing her child was so much much more impactful and a pivotal part of the story. These TV writers must think of themselves to be so clever while making stink of someone else's work.
Finally someone who also likes the original characterization more! I don´t really mind the visions etc., but I find her descent into depression and suicide more impactful. I also prefer Jaehaerys´s murder the way it´s described in the book.
If Alfred wants a Strong male leader, he's in the right place. Long live King Simon Strong, Lord of the Seven-but-actually-Six Kingdoms, and Protector of my Heart 👑🤍💙❤️💚
I don’t even care at this point. I’ve read all 10 books, been active in the community, been donating to Alt for years and genuinely loved his commentary…but I just don’t care anymore. Between S5-S8 of GoT and the absolute mess of HotD S2 I just give up. Sarah Hess should never be in a writers room again. Condal is an idiot. They had the entire story laid out for them; start to finish. All they had to do was follow the script and fill in dialogue/blank spaces. Instead they chose to just ruin it. I want to be clear that this comment is in NO WAY an attack of Schwift, Glimbus, Crtl Shift Shywft, Blimbus, Blumbus, or Alt Shift Rivers. I’m just simply venting my frustration at the HotD “””writers”””
Agree almost 💯. My only addition is that I think GRRM, & to a far lesser-degree, many, many of the fans (including, yes, the content creators you list) hold some responsibility for the HBO schlock that’s been put out. I’m not interested in attacking anyone as a person, but I’ve got no issue with being critical of choices folks make. GRRM could’ve finished the series, it’s not like he hasn’t finished *many* projects since ADWD was (finally) published; Fans could’ve not supported the cash-grab, thirst trap adaptations, such as HotD, once those adaptations proved time & again they absolutely suck. Content creators could choose to not include coverage of those shit-adaptations in their work: I’ll point to the channels “Tolkien Untangled” “Girlnextgondor” as examples of creators who’ve actively avoided RoP content because they know it sucks & won’t promote it even through criticism.
I read George’s post about how Helena’s death is supposed to be the powder keg blowing up leading to Rhaenyra’s downfall. What do the small folk see in Helena? The show makes her just seem very reclusive and weird. Even after the death of Jaehaerys they showed sympathy, sure but that’s not enough for being beloved in my opinion. She doesn’t seem to leave the red keep to do charity, and she’s not charismatic like Margery or Rhaegar to grow that type of a parsocial relationship Like why would the average kingslanding civilian storm a nest of dragons and cause a city riot for a supposed injustice of someone who really comes off as just some stranger Can someone explain if I’m missing something, or is this maybe a part of the change with blood and cheese hence why the impact isn’t as great in a way if that makes sense
If I had to say, this has a lot to do with George R.R. Martin mostly expecting the show to play out beat for beat like the book, and not having the foresight to notice that the fact that Helaena is a very different in the show compared to the books, also means that she wouldn't be expected to be as beloved by the common people, thus expecting her death to be the catalyst of Rhaenyra's downfall isn't precisely reasonable given the circumstances. I can understand an author wanting his work to be respected and replicated without any major changes, but GRRM should realize that this is an adaptation, that the showrunners might be doing things not only based on fidelity to the source material but also on how audiences will receive them, and that maybe half the stuff he put in the book can be made either more palatable, changed for something else entirely that will be more accepted, or just shifted out of focus because it really isn't appealing and/or major enough to warrant the spotlight. At the end of the day, if people want to see the Fire & Blood story, they should just read Fire & Blood. If GRRM wanted a 100% loyal adaptation, perhaps he shouldn't have gone for a TV series, where audience and ratings are the name of the game. GRRM is not a screenplay writer, so as much as he might not like major changes being made that conflict with what he considers most important, maybe what he considers most important isn't the kind of thing that will make the show popular and possible in the first place.
He was a screenplay writer, who conceded (on his blog) that writing for TV demands changing the source material fx for budgetary and length reasons. He even specifically loved the change that Viserys got crippled by the throne. It is confounding that he knows that changes have to be made to the will of the big suits on the top, but when changes happen he gets pissy. He could just have NOT signed over his intellectual property, under a contract were he has no say.
George has its own vision and we must respect - However, I hope this teaches George a lesson and he focus his time in finishing the source material and not going the opposite direction (spending more time in the showbiz)
You know the source material is completly finished right? What happenes in ASOIF in no way affects F&B or how badly is adapted. You are entangling things.
Daemon saw season 8 of GOT and knew the real enemies are the writers so he straightened up real quick to try to end the series before the bad writing appeared… he was too late
25:09 - "so now [Aegon] hopes to become the Realm's Delight" I didn't take Aegon's line as his hope. He's destroyed physically and mentally. I interpreted it as him somewhat mocking the idea of people cheering for his return.
It's obvious GRRM is concerned. The problem is the show is being driven by people who "want to cut costs" (A) and the "wouldn't this be cool" people (B). The results (see examples below) will have a ripple effect in the next two seasons. - Sunfyre is dead, so how can he.... do something really important near the end of the story. Of course the dragon won't be doing this because they've turned Rhaenyra into this saintly person. They even had her dressed up as a Septa. (A did this) - The error with Daenerys' eggs (B did this) - One of the writers saying the only reason the black goat was at Harrenhal was because they thought it would be cool (B did this) - Having Helaena helping Daemon find himself in his vision when he was responsible for the death of her son (B did this) - Rhaenyra kisses Mysaria for no reason other than shock value. This will go nowhere (B did this). - What happened to the weirwood tree in the red keep in season 2? Was it just a prop for season 1? I guess it died from the lack of care in season 2. It would have been cool if Haelena was standing in front of it when she communicated with Daemon. No she's just standing on a parapet in a dazed state looking off into the distance. (A & B did this) There were a couple really good episodes in season 2. But they need to figure out how to pay for good writers with the same vision. They also need to get the "wouldn't this be cool" people out of the writing room.
Alicent didn't need to sneak past the blockade and didn't sneak into Dragonstone. Orwyle only got her out of King's Landing, then they either passed by or got caught in the blockade and made it/were brought to Dagonstone. Alicent's guard was kept outside and she was escorted inside by Rhaenyra's guards.
In English courtesy, the wife of a knight is called a "lady". If the custom is the same in Westeros, Hugh may not be overreaching in his ambitions. At least not yet.
Its interesting how this almost makes the episode seem more intricately and intentionally put together than I had initially thought, while at the same time exaggerating the issues with the episodes by comparing it to the book.

I'm sorry that I am so late commenting. Hopefully, it still helps your algorithm. Thank you again for a wonderful video. As always, you mentioned things that I hadn't considered. These deep dives really help me to enjoy the show and the books even more.
This might surprise HBO, but ASOIAF fans are actually... fans of the ASOIAF source material. That's kind of why anyone is tuning in. So, to have them neuter and change or "subvert" or just water things down... simply doesn't make sense to me. I feel like you could skip most of S2 and someone could edit the entire season into one summary episode of the big things. Frankly, I don't even remember most of it? Like Rhaenys dying and Helaena's watered down trauma, but what else really? Where is the fan favorite Nettles, and why is the very necessary baby Maelor? Why do writers who have never produced anything as iconic as GRRM stripping his work as if they can fix it and do something better? Like, guys... I'll criticize GRRM all day long happily, but he's the reason we're here at the end of the day. It's his story I want to know the ending to, it's his story I want to see portrayed faithfully on screen. Not whatever the fuck this was.

Whatever they do it won’t work the damage is already done
Heleana's magic is to own a copy of fire&blood book.
Surely the people who once again have to wait two years between seasons of HotD can be normal about having to wait a few weeks for a UA-cam video this thorough.

But seriously he did do a livestream after it. It’s not as detailed but it’s there
You'd think so, but we cannae help it
Don’t forget us book fans! We’ve been waiting 13 years, a couple weeks is nothing.
Imagine Cersei and Catelyn Stark on a sit-down and Cersei agrees to have Tommen crippled because of what happened to Bran 😂😂😂

All the 'active' gods are ultimately kinda selfish and are only trying to achieve their versions of 'Victory over Evil.'
Who that evil is, is not exactly clear.
The absolute character assassination of Alicent this season is a dumpster fire

GRRM could’ve finished the series, it’s not like he hasn’t finished *many* projects since ADWD was (finally) published;
Fans could’ve not supported the cash-grab, thirst trap adaptations, such as HotD, once those adaptations proved time & again they absolutely suck.
Content creators could choose to not include coverage of those shit-adaptations in their work: I’ll point to the channels “Tolkien Untangled” “Girlnextgondor” as examples of creators who’ve actively avoided RoP content because they know it sucks & won’t promote it even through criticism.
I was so much more excited for this video than I am Season 3 of HotD

I read George’s post about how Helena’s death is supposed to be the powder keg blowing up leading to Rhaenyra’s downfall.
What do the small folk see in Helena? The show makes her just seem very reclusive and weird. Even after the death of Jaehaerys they showed sympathy, sure but that’s not enough for being beloved in my opinion.
She doesn’t seem to leave the red keep to do charity, and she’s not charismatic like Margery or Rhaegar to grow that type of a parsocial relationship
Like why would the average kingslanding civilian storm a nest of dragons and cause a city riot for a supposed injustice of someone who really comes off as just some stranger
Can someone explain if I’m missing something, or is this maybe a part of the change with blood and cheese hence why the impact isn’t as great in a way if that makes sense
I don't care much about his post tbh
@@balabanasireti???? Fuck u comment then for ???
Please put a spoiler alert! Many people didn’t read GRRM’s post
While that’s true wrt GOT, the source material for HOTD is compete (as barebones as it is).
Daemon saw season 8 of GOT and knew the real enemies are the writers so he straightened up real quick to try to end the series before the bad writing appeared… he was too late
Finally been waiting forever for this episode
I heard somewhere that bloodraven is also a joker, a smoker and a midnight toker and gets his lovin on the run
25:09 - "so now [Aegon] hopes to become the Realm's Delight"
I didn't take Aegon's line as his hope.
(A did this)
- The error with Daenerys' eggs (B did this)
- One of the writers saying the only reason the black goat was at Harrenhal was because they thought it would be cool (B did this)
- Having Helaena helping Daemon find himself in his vision when he was responsible for the death of her son (B did this)
- Rhaenyra kisses Mysaria for no reason other than shock value.
(A & B did this)
There were a couple really good episodes in season 2. But they need to figure out how to pay for good writers with the same vision. They also need to get the "wouldn't this be cool" people out of the writing room.
Your recap series is how i know new episodes have come out! Thank you!
