    Watch CLA remix this powerful rock record from scratch. The multi-platinum mixer leaves his home base at Mix LA in search of new sonic territory. Inspired by the diverse gear collection at Rue Boyer, he fires up the studio’s pristine SSL 4000E and puts his analog mix techniques to the test.
    Chris approaches the mix as an opportunity to experiment with the studio’s high-end equipment racks. He sets up a genuine slap using a vintage Revox tape machine and he pushes the mix into a new dimension using a stack of boutique compressors from Manley, Dramastic and Undertone Audio. He clearly defines his intentions behind each hardware insert and effects send, allowing you to follow his decision-making process as it happens.
    Chris starts at the very beginning, showing how he prepares a basic DAW session for mix. He applies some gentle pre-processing and summing in the box before outputting the session to the 48-channel console. Once all the analog gear has been patched in, he builds a powerful balance in a matter of seconds. Along the way, he feathers in some tasteful EQ and compression to bring out the personality of each band member and bring the mix to life.
    It is always inspiring to watch Chris work behind the console and this series offers a fresh take on his tried and tested process. Watch him exercise his signature mix techniques using a new set of tools and learn more about his work with this iconic rock band.

    A lot of people watching this may ask themselves, how does he get that snare to sound so great….well, he doesn’t, that snare was recorded sounding fantastic and that also goes for all the other tracks.

      You should actually watch CLA mix a session. He doesn't do nothing to the snare. Half of his moves when working with the drums as a whole is to accentuate the snare and make sure it sounds great.
      Saying "it's 100% the recording" is small-brain shit. The recording is super important and should be focused on. But it's loser-mentality to stop there.

      it was recorded well (rob cavallo produced) but he still added a bunch of eq from a neve 1084 and his own samples and reverb. it's there if you just watch the video.

    I love CLA. I still stand by his idea of comping down - if an artist sends you 32 quad tracked guitars, make an executive decision to discard the vast majority of them. You're only human, you can't control hundreds of faders but you CAN control 48 (the maximum via his Sony DASH). He's phenomenal. I still go back to recordings like RATMs debut album, where they were constricted to 24 tracks and it still sounds bludgeoningly powerful. I recently worked through a modern metal tutorial with Joel Wanasek / Machine Head and after 6 weeks of excruciating work on one track, I gave up. It was so technical to the point of self indulgence that I didn't mix for 3 months after.
    My question is always "Does the end consumer know / care about any of this ferocious technicality"? Wanasek's tutorial committed the worst sin - it made me fall out of love with the process.
    I couldn't help but think that had they have given it to CLA, he'd have mixed it in a fraction of the time, without half the nonsense and it'd still sound absolutely killer.

      Then how orchestra/soundtrack mixers control 1000+ tracks?

    • @DrRinse
      @DrRinse 4 місяці тому +2

      @@FireF1y644Most likely they have a team of mixers and submixers with one person handling just a few faders. Even then, they'll comp those tracks down into something manageable. Orchestras wouldn't have anywhere close to a thousand tracks. One mic will pick up a section.

    I just wish the MWTM actually provided the multi-tracks so we can practice mixing the song as well. Even if they allowed the into, V1 and CH1 and not the whole song. I left MWTM last year becuase they dont provide audio files for most of their sessions. If they change that I would consider re-joining

    I'm noticing that the new Green Day stuff sounds really, really good overall! I'm also noticing that, in grand tradition, their bassist is too damn low in the mix again. Just like it's been for a couple decades. So be it.

    we use plugins because we don't have access to ALL THAT STUFF YOU HAVE, Mr. CLA! Normally the first plugins are there to do what it would have been done if you have neve's, api, ssl's and unfairchilds coming in...

If you have session from Blackbird or Sunset - no questions. But not every tracking sound like this. unfortunately.
