  • Soprano Solomeja Kruszelnicka (1872-1952) / Wiwcy moi wiwcy (Pastusza pisnia) {Shepherd's song} / Zcerez sad wynohrad - Diwocza pisnia - (Beyond the orchard, the vineyard) {Girls' song} / Recorded: March 1, 1928, Chicago, USA --
Solomeja Kruszelnicka was one of the most notable and complete sopranos that sang on the lyric stage during the first three decades of the 20th century. She was indeed an extraordinary singer, possessing a beautiful voice, extensive and of great ductility, and with exquisite feeling, by which she attained dramatic and musical performances of rare quality, most of them unsurpassable for the style, singing line and acting ability she exhibited. She excelled as much in the Italian repertory as in the Wagnerian, and also in the concert world, to which she devoted herself exclusively the last years of her career. (Source: The Record Collector, Vol. XVIII, No. 4 - Feb. 1969)
ITEM: The spelling of her name appears in many different forms, including Solomiya Ambrosiyivna Krushelnytska, Krushelnitska, Krushel'nytska, Kruszelnicka, Krusceniski, etc. The spelling in the title & description of this posting is as it appears on the original Columbia 10" green label discs.

The second song is bouncy and charming. :) I love the Ukrainian words (though I can't understand them!); their rough texture adds a wonderful dimension to song. Thanks, Doug!

I understood that it had been ascertained decades ago that these were mis-labeled, and actually by her sister.
