    Couldn’t agree more about the quality of clothing going downhill. Even a higher end European brand I was loyal to for years is now stocking polyester items. It makes more sense for me to shop secondhand and invest in tailoring. Loved this episode ❤

    2023 was my year of only buying thrifted items. I found these have become my favourite items because thrift shops have so much more variety than the limited selection of what is “in season” at the mall. Also, I am sensitive to fabric textures and preworn items are often more comfortable. More of the same for 2024 and donating another box of little worn items.

Don’t leave those maybe items on the rack, someone else might take it and you’re out of luck if you go back to get it. Take your time going thru things, making sure there aren’t any holes, stains, etc that might otherwise make the item unwearable. In 2023, I was so tired of everything. Like everyone, I had so many items in my closet but nothing to wear. My body changed around covid and hasn’t been the same since. That and fertility medications made a difference. I work a hybrid schedule, so it makes more sense to add more wfh loungewear. In my mid to late 20’s, I focused on spending quality clothes vs. the quantity yet even when I need to work in person or go to career events, I can never find anything to wear and the sizing is never right.
    I now crave simplicity and neutrals. I think I’m going into my Carolyn Besset era. It’s easy, classic, and can match with everything. I’ve also done an online color analysis to confirm my season and narrow down what colors would be best for me so I won’t waste money, feelings, and energy purchasing clothes I don’t need.

    An inspiring video ladies! Signe, you had mentioned learning things about summer clothing but didn't elaborate, and I've heard you say in the past that you find dressing for summer more challenging. Me too! Would love for you ladies to talk about the seasons and how you deal with the challenges of each.

    Loved this! So much inspiration everyone! I started to sew in 2020 .. I learnt a ton from UA-cam (Tomkat Stitchery taught me so much). My corporate wardrobe is now 80% me made .. pants and button down shirts .. I just haven't had the nerve to try a blazer but I made a lined winter coat and a trench. A lot are independent patterns like from Love Notions .. I now go to shops and pretty much walk on by the badly made clothes especially the fast fashion .. I know I can do so much better and it fits me as I want it .. win win !! Has been worth the learning curve! 🎉🎉

    I am so excited to hear you are thinking of doing an episode on new clothing getting worse. The fabric content of clothing has changed to everything and anything blended with polyester. Especially wool coats - based on my own experience and what I've heard from others this year, 100% wool coats (new) were almost impossible to find, even at premium prices. One of my intentions from last year that I'm carrying into this year is focusing on natural fibers only (thrifted and/or new) and doing that has REALLY slowed down my consumption - simply because its hard to find. Another intention of mine is the same as what Signe said - less online and more in person, for so many reasons. I do have a few really small boutiques on Etsy that do handmade and vintage that I support but my shopping circle has gotten much smaller. So glad to have your podcast back in my weekly listening rotation I love your conversations!

      Omg, same sentiments. I had to buy clothes last year since my body has changed drastically, but it's so annoying that literally everything has polyester or acrylic nowadays. The prices are outrageous for stuff that were made with synthetics -- almost like a scam! Most of my purchases that are 100% natural fibers were from thrift stores. 😐

    • @jl82714
      @jl82714 7 місяців тому +2

      @@veronxska absolutely same experience here! It definitely feels scam-like to be looking at something ultra-luxe (or branded as such) and then open the fabric content section and see a poly mix. I heard another influencer say once "you're paying for the designers vision" which made my head spin a little lol.

    Great discussion! Regarding the decreasing quality of clothes, I have noticed this as well. For example, 15 years ago I bought a lot of basics from J Crew-I still have jeans and cashmere sweaters from that era that look new. I didn’t really like the company’s designs post-Jenna Lyons, but last fall decided to check them out for a few basics. As you ladies noted, the fabrics were inferior, and the clothes were very poorly made-I found them of lower quality than fast fashion brands, yet still at an elevated price. I returned everything. Fifty years ago, even “cheap” clothes were well sewn and had buttons of shell or horn; now many higher-end brands have poorly sewn garments with plastic buttons made by workers who don’t receive a living wage.
    My shopping these days is a mix of a few high street basics, occasional new luxury purchases, and primarily luxury and vintage items bought pre-loved. My primary criteria are: Is the item my style and is it made to last?

    I did a lot of thrifting in 2023. The rail in our closet broke from the weight. My husband and I both did a clean out. I have put everything thing back in with the hangers turned around. At the end of this year I shall see what never gets worn. I am also on a no buy year. I don't need anything. I can only replace cosmetics and skin care. No new experimental purchases. I already feel quite empowered to make this happen

I have decluttered the noise and found my capsule wardrobe and am now very careful what I add, even second hand. I totally agree with supporting local businesses, I have used Etsy allot recently for handmade gifts and I treated myself to two skirts, one per year which were hand made in wool and the other a summer wrap skirt from linen. I think you can buy items that you later regret because of the mood you're in at the time.
    Also, putting an outfit together is one thing, confidence is what walks it out of the door. I've had this when it's been for a party, the outfit would surprise others so you revert to your usual. This is not the real you.

  • @amyli092
    @amyli092 7 місяців тому

    Sometimes, it's really easy for me to become influenced by my surroundings when it comes to what I decide to wear, and building up resistance from that is difficult. Throughout the last year off and on, I've noticed that it's been easier for me to assemble an outfit around a pair of leggings, or even just leaving the house with sweatpants on (which I only did once in all fairness here). I feel like if my life wasn't so busy in balancing both work and still being in school with only 2 classes left to take, I'd be able to be more consistent in putting together outfits that actually make me feel good about myself. About half the time, I'm just too tired to even bother.
    So to cap off what I'm learning here about my style habits at least, I want to start enjoying the process of getting dressed again and really put forth more time and effort into making sure I feel my best in what I'm wearing. I know that my mental health tends to benefit from this sometimes, but other times, other tools may need to be utilized more often. Finding balance when your schedule already feels hectic isn't always easy. 😮‍💨

    While watching this, I tried calculating how many outfits I already have in my wardrobe. So I quickly calculated ONLY THOSE ITEMS I COULD REMEMBER ON THE SPOT which turned out to be 20+ tops (shirts, tops, blouses, sweaters) and 20+ bottoms (skirts, jeans, other types of pants). So just technically I have 400+ outfits to try, and this is without even layering, switching shoes and accessorising!!! Add 10 dresses and 4 layering pieces and it gets to
    (20*20 + 10)*5 (4 items +1 for no extra layer) = 2050 unique combinations WHICH IS 5.5 YEARS without repeating an outfit (10 years if I do the same with summer pieces, 20 years given I spend half of my days in sportswear or pyjamas 😂).
    And yet I often have a feeling that I need to buy something new to 'refresh' my wardrobe...
    If we stop and think about that, it is just INSANE!!!

    In 2023, I kept track of all my clothing and accessories that were purchased AND returned! I had the date, price, colour and what I bought and returned. Looking back, there are some purchases that were misfires and others that are workhorses. It was very interesting to see the list as I forgot what I bought and what I returned and why. I understand Christina's in-store shopping intentions. I enjoy touching the merchandise! Also, returning items bought online requires even more effort to return it. In 2024, I intend to keep track again. In addition, I intend to mend and take care of items (polish shoes, protect them with weather protector), punch holes in belts that need it, etc.

    I completely agree about the pieces getting worse quality. I have an H&M 100% wool coat I got for maybe $100 like 5-6 years ago, and it’s still looking really good! No holes, lost buttons, dingy seams, lost structure. Back then $100 really was a lot of money for me so I’m glad the piece lasted so well, but if I look at H&M coats now, the quality is awful and I couldn’t make the same good investment now if I tried.

    Happy New Year, ladies! I'm so glad to see your podcast... I was going into withdrawal! In 2023 I decided to get rid of most things in my wardrobe that were not made of primarily natural fibers. When adding new pieces to fill in the "holes", I've looked at pre-loved, mostly. I'm still curating but now my closet is full of sustainable, higher-quality pieces that will last a long time! So happy to have you three back and talking slow fashion! I loved hearing your intentions and reflections. Last year was one I took myself in hand and tried honing in on things that felt specifically me. I attempted eliminating typical neutrals from my wardrobe and shopping, to see what living in predominantly color would do for me (nothing bonkers, but replacing tans with rust oranges or beiges with dusty pinks), and I felt more myself than ever. Just very ALIVE. This year, I'd love to actually sell the pieces I'm not wearing, instead of just storing them up, saying my intention is to sell them. hahah. Gotta give back to that secondhand market!

    Wishing you all the best for the new year too, ladies! I’ll continue to follow you this year. For me 2023 was the year I finally found my three style words: understated, flowy and elegant! These words match my colouring perfectly, I’m a muted somewhat cool colour type. According to Kibbe’s theory, my bodytype is soft classic, so the flowiness in clothes goes really well with that. That type of fit and cut feels most comfortable and falls nicely on my body. First I disliked it, because I wanted to be more eccentric if you will. But now I see how that doesn’t work for me, I’ve come to love my newfound style! My style goal for 2024 is: learning to dress my age better. I’m 42 and I find it hard to find clothes that reflect my agegroup best. Things tend to either be too youthful of too mature/frumpy.
    I’d love to see an episode on the indeed decreasing quality of clothes. I remember buying a pair of black dressy pants that lasted me for over 6 years. That never happens anymore.

    I love the concept of thrifting but as a tall women, with most of my height from my leg length ( short torso) as well as long arms, thrifting is very challenging . Thrifting is also very time consuming , since Covid many thrift stores here, have removed fitting rooms, so that’s frustrating. For me the fit makes a big difference.

    2024 -Style over shopping, shop pre-owned to RE love it, but mostly, practice gratitude for what I have. I have things in my closet I still haven’t styled while shopping my closet, because as I start shopping my closet, I keep finding more outfits so I only get 2 skirts styled when I meant to get 3 skirts and a dress styled in that setting. Makes me think, do I NEED more things? I still don’t know what all I have and there are only so many days in a year and I want to wear what I love a lot!

    Yay your back... happy new year to you all (and everyone else too).
    So many good discussions, I've started using a weekly rail after watching your content, so much less time procrastinating. Love the Intentions and Habits rather than resolutions, my intention is to buy less (10 items), also buy more second hand and to try and shop for things that go across more seasons ( for example I have a beach coverup than can double up as a top or be worn with Jeans for a night out). It all feels a lot more intentional. (Loving Apollos input too lol).
    I can sew (I trained as a fashion designer) but I never do as my machine is broken, if I can buy less this year I will mend/ replace my machine. I always find I want something but I can't find what I want so I buy something similar and them I'm disappointed, I should just make my own, but then there can be a lot of waste from the making process too.
