  • I think most of you have asked this... how to choose paint colors! Today I'm going to talk about all the things you need to consider when choosing your interior wall paint colours. With literally millions of paint colours to choose from, it might feel overwhelming to narrow that down and make a decision that you won't regret once it's done.

    I took a pencil and outline around the frame of pictures on my wall. Took the picture down and painted inside the square. I tried three different colors and could see how they looked throughout the day with the changing light. If we had company, i put the pictures back. Gave me me time to really make a lived with decision on the color choice.

    Don't test paint squares on your walls! Instead paint a large block on a big sheet of paper (lining paper). You can move the sheet around the room to see it in different light and angles and it saves leaving marks on your walls.

      Agree - she seems v affable and approachable but doesn't add a ton of tangential 'fluff' that stops you getting the key point - I learned loads in a very short space of time. She seriously knows her stuff re colour and design, not just one or the other.

    I love your channel. I am working on this problem as we speak. My 16X12 living room faces north, so not much natural light. It also has an attached (L-shaped) dr, 10x6. I’m a minimalist, but want to warm up the room. I’m looking at pink/mauve/peach/grey/taupe shades, with an LRV somewhere in the mid-60s range. Any lighter, why paint? Any darker, it’s a cave (and this is a rental apartment).
    I bought 20”x16” canvases at Michael’s (five for $13), and samples of different shades from a Benjamin Moore dealer. I also applied Command hooks in several spots along the walls, including close enough to my two main paintings to butt the canvases up against the artwork.
    So my three contenders are Gobi Desert, Porcelain, and Rose Dust. I’m viewing with shades up, day and night, shades down, light on (only one lamp in the room).
    So any tips on narrowing these three down to one final colour would be most helpful.

    Thanks for posting this video...really very helpful! We are constructing our new flat, we would like to use sage green as an accent color in our living/dining room and teal for our bedroom. We would like to have the same floor for both rooms. I am having a difficult time deciding on what color should be the floor. We have decided on granite tiles. I would appreciate your input on this. Thanks!

      teal and sage green are lovely - the colors of nature- trees, mallard ducks. A brown wood hue would be good - as in nature the tree which holds green leaves. Accent them with accessories that are of nature as well.

    Our church had an interior decorator choose a color for the Narthex. She made some suggestions based on our discussions and within a few minutes, made a solid recommendation. The ladies in the group decided they knew better and started a new "search". After a few weeks and many discussions, the ladies decided on the same exact color. MORAL: save time, believe the decorator if they are close to your choice!

A large white faux letter rectangle on one side and large metal pedestal leg on other. • @intelligentperson6759

      I like that rule, if you don't love it or use it, toss it. If you have a gorgeous couch you love, base your wall paint on that. Pick out what you love, and get your harmonizing wall colors. Also, depends if you have an open space design. If you do, then you'll be looking at kitchen wall color same time you're in your living room. In that case, you'll want consistently co-ordinating pastels, for example. If you do not have an open design, your kitchen wall color won't matter as much. Regarding wood cabinets in kitchens- if they're shades of brown and beige, palest green, blue, or white won't fight with the wood color, the way a beige wall would. Again, toss out what you hate looking at, and good luck in your decorating scheme.

    Such a great video, thank you. I’m considering the new Metropolitan for my small living/dining area. A year ago I started painting bedrooms and have been using BM Simply White for the ceilings and will continue through the rest of the house. Do you feel that Metropolitan will go well with Simply White? I think it should. I have one window on the south and three on the west so there is a fair amount of morning and afternoon light always present in the room. The wood furniture is all dark, but new sofa and chairs to choose after painting. The room is small with standard ceilings. Thank you for any reply.

    We are restoring a 1947 mid century (modest) home and I felt it was important to at least attempt to stick with historic hues of that era. Luckily I liked many of the shades used then and we settled on Sherwin Williams Belvedere Cream for the walls of the open living room/ dining room. Many people say don't use yellow, but it's such a lovely, soft shade and we love it.

    Oh how I needed this! I am color blind & choosing colors is the most difficult chore in my life.
    I am in that process now. Usually I make an appt with the colorist at my paint store & tell her how I want it to feel.
    She knows my likes & usually nails it. But I had to buy 6 different cans of white paint before I nailed the right white
    For my remodeled kitchen. I am working on flooring too. Have 4 samples at my feet right now. I go by the feel I want.
    Thanks for the white paint chip trick. That will really help!

      I was going to suggest Benjamin Moore’s Beach Glass (1564, with LRV of 49), or its two lighter siblings, Quiet Moments (LRV 61) and Aloe (LRV 68). The higher the LRV, the lighter the shade (thank you James from Paint People). I have Beach Glass throughout much of my home, including the kitchen. It’s gorgeous, a bit of a chameleon (changes to a beautiful grey/teal at dusk), and calming. And it’s neutral!

    Have you ever seen the use of different hues of the same color... like softer grey on 3 walls and a darker grey on a large wall almost like it a focus wall. I am asking (of course) because I am thinking of doing this.... Why, I have found a wonderful DARK sapphire blue velvet couch... Its amazing... 97" long and its a center piece... I dont want the paint color to fight the couch for attention. AAll of that being said, I love color and would actually prefer my walls to not be all greys but I feel like I am left with no choice. If I want the beautiful blue couch I have to make the wall colors step back. Your thoughts?

Later I decided to paint the other side of the room and tried twice to match it because I could not remember the color and both times it turned out too dark and too gray. I have a ground level suite with two bedrooms, kitchen, hallway, dining room, living room and one bathroom and all have tile floors except one bedroom. There are 4 or 5 different tile colours and I can't figure out what colour to paint the walls. The tile in the kitchen is a darker green, and then there are tiles that are beige, rust, a mix of greens. It's mind boggling.

    • @intelligentperson6759
      @intelligentperson6759 4 роки тому

      Depends if you want to continue with the tiles. If you do, take the shade of the darker green in the kitchen, and go to the palest pastel version for the wall. or simply go pale grey or antique white, which should harmonize, and not fight with the colors. For a bedroom, treat yourself to a pretty rug that doesn't fight the tile colors, and then go and pick your wall to harmonize with the rug and whatever comforter you've picked out.

    If you must apply a sample to the wall. Consider painting it corner to corner. -to avoid any possibility of burnishing.
    Yes the lighting makes a huge difference. Darker colors without enough natural light will tend to close the space in.
    The sheen also matters for light gathering purposes. “Preparation makes the difference”

      Look at older Scandinavian designed rooms because traditionally their homes have high ceilings and they use that vertical space very well. You want things that occupy a a large vertices space like plates and baskets balanced on their edge, or pictures.

    What is the best off white for a low lit basement from SW

    • @Designchickee
      @Designchickee  5 років тому +2

      Hi Tamica, I don't have any recommendations for SW paints as I don't use them very often. But if you keep to a white that is bright instead of dull, it should help your basement be brighter. Just compare whites to each other to find the brighter one.

    I have a red bedspread and pillow sham in a bedroom that will be repainted. Question is: What's the best way to discern what color of red the bedspread is so that I can correctly choose a coordinating / complimentary paint color?

    • @mamasimmerplays4702
      @mamasimmerplays4702 4 роки тому

      N Wear your paint shop should have a machine to identify colours from samples. Check first that the pillow slip is still the same colour as the bedspread - colours do fade - and then take the pillowslip in to have it colour matched. If some of the fabric has faded, you might want to get several positions matched, or choose a spot that is about average for the whole. Get a sample pot (usually about 250ml) and paint a few samples on your walls to see if that's what you're happy with.

    I have a paneled living room. I am trying to get a cottage/shabby look. I have a yellow floral sofa and chairs that I may have slipcovered to white. I was thinking of white walls. but what color white? Help!!!

      Exact color as your slipcovers. Much easier to match paint to them than the other way around.

    Hey,
    I have a design dilema. I want to make a river stone type flooring similar to ones they have in a spa for my home bathroom. But i am not sure how to handle the problem of water which would get stuck between those stones. Any idea how to handle it ?

    • @Designchickee
      @Designchickee  4 роки тому +1

      You shouldn't use actual individual stones since they'll be too round and not lay flat, making water an issue... but you can get tile sheets that look like those stones or actually use those stones but they are flat underneath so that you can tile it just like normal tile. Then water shouldn't be an issue. Good luck!

      @@Designchickee Thanks a lot.Really appreciate your replying.
      Actually i didn't want to get the tile as i wanted to have the natural stone effect that are just stacked/placed over each other. Is there anything in the drainage design that i can do so that the water does not get stuck

      Deep blue accent walls are becoming more and more popular. Anything from teal to navy and anywhere in between. If you paint your other walls in a white that "plays nice" with your chosen blue, you'll be able to have a punch of color without it getting too dark or overwhelming the space! Check out "blue accent walls" on Pinterest and see what you think!

      I live in a small condo, and recently remodeled my u-shaped kitchen which flows into dining area, which flows into living room. Due to a limited budget, I need to decorate in stages. My kitchen has white cabinets, a medium to dark value oak floor and varied taupes on the countertop and backsplash tile, which goes from under upper cabinets to countertop and above sink. Appliances are brushed stainless The only wall space showing is around the window. my living room and dining area is decorated in mostly warm colors--soft yellow, sage, and rust. Dining table and chairs are medium to dark tone wood. End and coffee table are glass top with metal legs that are brushed brass. I am stumped as to how to blend these room colors together, so there is a nice cohesive flow.
