- Brinton Averil Smith, cellist. Miklós Rózsa's Toccata capricciosa, Op.36 for solo 'cello. Written in 1979 and dedicated to the memory of Gregor Piatigorsky, this short work is among the most challenging in the repertoire. Hungarian composer Miklós Rózsa is better known for his work as a composer of film music, including the scores of Spellbound and Ben Hur, but he continued to lead a 'double life' as a successful classical composer. He writes "Toccata Capricciosa is not an elegy: rather it reflects something of PIatigorsky's incomparable vitality, open-heartedness, buoyancy and bravado, qualities which... are sadly missing in many performing artists today" From a faculty recital of works for solo cello at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, 3/15/10. Other works on the program included solo cello works by Reger, Sibelius, Bloch, Ysaye, Cassado and transcriptions for solo cello of works by Paganini and Chopin.
