I can’t offer a sensible, dispassionate critique of this because I don’t know whether I love it or hate it. It’s clean, accurate in it’s articulation, highly repetitive, but tethered to the electronic pads, so indicative of its age. It’s melodically cute, but I think it might have benefitted from a less obvious group of pitches from the pads.
In the early 80s I was trying to get by without a hi-hat, and without continual riding on the hats or ride cymbal. That approach certainly cleared the air from all the metalwork, but I miss the ride and that cushion of sustain under the cymbal pattern. Here most instrument are short, their sounds decaying in milliseconds. It makes you move more quickly onto the next thing - to nervously fill space when space would have been better unfilled.
But this rig was for King Crimson of course, and no one said it’d be much use outside of that band. I chose these instruments to further the band’s programme; to do the grubby work, to find and challenge borders and genres, and to leave the place most definitely not as we found it.
My pre-click-track generation usually pedalled the hi-hat on two and four. It was our click-track. Art Blakey’s thunderous patterns around the kit wouldn’t have been half as cool if he hadn’t used his hat in that way. The other limbs were heard in relief from the constant ‘chick’ of the hat.
The hi-hat these days is a beautiful fourth voice, offering the highest frequencies in the kit through splashing or closed, with or without striking with a stick. Don’t tell anyone, because I often use it, but a great sound is kick and hat (pedalled) in unison; highest and lowest frequencies together.
In the King Crimson of the 1980s, this tinkering with the kit was all an artificial constraint that makes you dig deeper to find something else that’ll work. So ride patterns on the boo-bams, for example, worked well. Like the log-drum, they have a lovely sense of pitch without actually being in pitch; or better, indefinitely pitched. Constraints like these are like telling the lighting person she can only use blues and greens tonight. She’s going to have to find a work-around, and may find something she wouldn’t have found otherwise. It’s a creativity driver.
Anyway, that’s roughly how I went about doing things back in the Dark Ages. Hope you enjoy the solo. Good to hear the Neo-Crims - Belew, Levin, Vai, Carey - are going out on the road to give the 80s music a second go round, 40 years later! I wish them all the best with it. As someone pointed out, the original five Brits in 1969 have turned into four Americans in 2024.

His creativeness to put conventional drums, electronic drums and primitive drums together is a testament to why he is one of the absolute best ever. An amazing percussionist, and my favorite of all time.
You just witnessed Bill Buford “going nuts”.
Outstanding! Whenever I hear this type jam I’m transported to June 1982 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion and Bill and Adrian playing waiting man. Just me and a good friend both 17 years old. It was magic.
i also saw them at mpp, about 2 years later, 3 of a perfect pair tour. great show, the very next night mtv ran a concert of them from japan that was almost identical to the show he night before. so glad i saw them then, playng discipline, beat and 3oapp. beat tour this fall with vai and carey looks interesting, tix available today.

Cool, I was at that show too! In fact I think I saw all my KC shows at the MPP.
My favorite drummer ! Respect from RUSSIA !
Get out of Ukraine🤬
Yep! Still my favorite drummer 🥁 of all time!
Please don’t bring your politics here and be polite to people. Music is for everyone.
That was to the second commenter.
@@ikolos872all Putin wanted was a signed document that Ukraine would not join NATO...he didn't get it, so he had no choice!
USA get out of Israel, USA get out of Syria, USA get out of Yemen!
Creative and innovative drum music!! The cymbal sounds so beautiful.
Thanks Dr Bruford. Rick Beato recently interviewed the American Crims.
Absolute perfection
He’s The Greatest In My Humble Opinion… 🤔🧐☝️👆🙏
So nice of you to wish well for those with the up and coming tour.. Am hoping to be able to get to a show if one is near and can secure a ticket..
It was truly an amazing experience going to the concert during the Discipline tour back in 81 or 82.. I will never forget the experience.. Thank you for that.. Wishing you all the best.(and thank you for sharing from all of your archives) ❤😏👍
Those cymbal hits are so tasteful. They sound so nice
Articulate, thoughtful, enlightened, and concise, as usual -- both the drumming and the commenting.
Thanks again Bill! I've been listening to your work since I was a teenager and you were, without a doubt, the drummer who enchanted me. When Crimsom returned in the 80', I was thrilled! What was that sound?! Timbres that I had never heard before, modernity and structurally impeccable. I'm excited about the 4 Americans on this adventure of celebrating the 3 masterpieces of the 80's. I would love it if you and Fripp were at this celebration but I think the 4 Americans will do the job
Endlessly inspirational.

The perfect KC kit!
Yes was practically a rock orchestra of timeless virtuosos!
That’s exactly what they were. Possibly the era’s most musically talented outfit.
@@frankhoulihanfh4972 To be sure!
Back in the day I was always fascinated and wondering what drum set Bill was playing in the "Discipline" album. This is it! The log-drum is the secret weapon and it sounds great and intriguing.
1981/82 was top of the mountain. 1995/96 was the thrak of all thraks we were given. All Golden days indeed with William B.
Masterful, a legendary solo.
Truly a musician's musician. A shame he no longer tours. 👍👍👍👍
Still my favorite drummer. I love the way he dances while grooving, that was the most important thing I learned and took from his example.
Bravo!!!
Love the combo of the wood sound from the slit drum in contrast to electric synth drums. Fantastic polys!
Revolutionary... a real advance concerning the foundations of the drumset.
Thank you Mr. Bill Bruford!*,*
Incredible! Thank you for posting this.
Love the groove!!! Peace from Florida!!!!
"In the Dark Ages" 😆😅 Well, your playing at this time (which was my starting time of playing drums) was definitely absolute different from all other players of this time and highly inspiriting. I loved it and still do although i don't like the electronic sounds no longer, the concept was beyond the boundaries of the classic drum set 💙
Well, it's literally dark! 😆
Great video.
The Great Bill
This is so cool, especially from 4:07 onward
So creative
legend
Genius saw him with Anderson, Wakeman and Howell 1990 MSG magic
Thanks!
Bill !!!
Bello/Magnifico.😅😅😅😅😅😅
Hugs from Brasil.
Hey Bill, any thoughts on BEAT with Tony, Adrian, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey? I'm conflicted but grateful to go to quasi-relive and celebrate. But when I do, I'll be thinking of you -- the enormous absence; the inspiration you gave so many of us.
"As someone pointed out, the original five Brits in 1969 have turned into four Americans in 2024." Yes, indeed. I saw the 80's version quite a few times, not sure if I'll catch the new tour with Vai and Carey joining your mates because these days I don't go to concerts. There was a time...
Wow
🎉Killer!!🎉 Hope you are well 🤗🐼♥️✝️💐
Hola Bill.
Gracias por compartir.
Saludos desde ciudad de Canelones, Uruguay.
👍👍👍
😊 ✨
I can see where mario duplantier and danny carey get their chops from. Amazing.
👏
TheBest
I've met Bill Brew for three times Great Scott. He's quite a good drummer I must say sad to say see him retire oh well picking up the scraps are you. Great Scott challenges roofer to a drum solo I was trained by our Blakey Max Roach and Tony Williams and Buddy Rich. Louie belson also let me start with the finish Great Scott wins every time. Have a nice life.
King Crimsons album Red was my introduction to Mr Bruford and I still think he amazing. Even over 3 decades later.
Have a nice life.
One more red nightmare 😮

One word... Bruf-ford
That kit prob. costs more than a fairly decent car !
The Simmons drums sound really good. It's their analog quality that keeps it organic.
Best prog rock drummer ever!
YES was outstanding with Bill Bruford on the 🥁 Alan White was good. But with Bruford live! "Forget about it!"
I don't like when people underestimate the talent of Allan White who's talent on tales of Topographic Oceans and Relayer are monster. I love Buford . But Allan was Yes' drummer for years
@@justingoulet9714 I dont think its AGAINST Allan, who was an EXCELLENT player. But some people, like me, LOVE, I mean L O V E the rhythmical and melodical approach of Mr. Bruford, it tickles something inside my soul. Its a little bit the same with Porcaro and Phillips with Toto, not a question of "good" or "better", but "I like it more".......
If you respect people, don't antagonize them in your comments.
His name is Bruford.
Heard the Levin-Torn-White album? It's a good way to get a more nuanced view.
I was 10 yo on this day.. cool
Bill and his percussives…….
I can hear danny carey all over this
Strange solo. Very nice 👌 but the strange thing is the tempo. And mistakes so im not sure if those mistakes were intentional to make the solo sound more fluid anyhow they’re not nice.
Ironic. Bill said he didn't want to stay in Yes because didn't want to get stuck in a box for the next 20 years, then I saw him with Fripp playing this box, rattling shakers and assorted noise makers. I was very dissapointed how squelched and subdued he was.
Bill genio e Icono de la percusion
Gotta love people who have opinions that never ever played in bands or toured or recorded or blew up like BB
@@421bb4
Or make any sense.
Did you listen to indiscipline? Or really any of the songs played?
@@AudioAtmosC'mon, it's a UA-cam comment. Making sense would be idiomatic.
