This is pretty much how I discovered him... my dad asked me to copy a CD of Pink Floyd's Relics as a teen, I bought Piper later that year, and Syd's solo stuff too... then discovered Soft Machine through UA-cam suggestions, and eventually Kevin, Gong, Robert Wyatt, and the entire Canterbury scene... The amusing part was when I asked some girls to make me look like Kevin Ayers for Halloween (I had introduced them to his music and asked them to make me look like him based on his Soft Machine makeup in '67-68, they applied an appropriate amount of eye liner)... for some reason everyone thought I was Batman
What A Supreme Monumental Classic From This Great Artist. Thank You And God Bless Mr Ayres For This And Many More Majestic Memories You Have Left Us All To Enjoy.
That is a remarkable album with contributions from Mike Oldfield, one of the most wonderful guitar solos ever, David Bedford string arrangements and so on. For me it is his best album, I gave my copy and ' Bananamour ' to a girlfriend on leaving Manchester to go back to London. We both loved those albums.
beautiful song this. fantastic guitar playing by Calvin Batchelor. Kevin Ayers ( vocals ) and Archie Leggett ( bass guitar ) are sadly both deceased. R.I.P. Because of this song i've bought numerous CD's and love everything Kevin Ayers and the prog scene in general.
Archie Leggett was a great bass player, from the Glasgow contingent including Alex Harvey and others. He played with Hendrix once and said it was almost impossible to follow what he was doing. Kevin Ayers always used excellent musicians, Mike Oldfield is the obvious one, and gave them space, while still keeping the song as the most important thing.
Somehow I missed out on him when I was younger (my loss!) so it's a bit weird to be catching up now when he has already passed on. There is a charm in his music that just carries me through and beyond the mundane moments. Thanks x

Knew of the late Kevin Ayers but somehow had never heard this song until it turned up on a BBC 4 compilation and I was just blown away by it. Great song and brilliant guitar work.
Had the blessing to see Kevin perform his Banana Follies at London's Roundhouse in 1975. Thanks for the memories and the wonderful music, Kevin. You can stop shouting now . . .
Great song, what a guitar player in the psychedelic jacket. Could listen to it all night. Sad to have only just discovered this music and find out Kevin passed away.
I found Kevin's music in 2017 and while on a birthday trip for my best friend in Amsterdam we got talking in the hotel private lounge for guests to American ladies doing the same, I played them all this song and Wot a dream, every single one of the women ended up being more than half in love with him!! I wonder if he knew how much the Ladies loved him?..
I LOVE him... All of his songs are amazing and I live The Whole World and the links to gong etc. Beautiful man who didn't care for promoting himself xx
This was filmed in June 1973 and repeated in an 80s comilation show. It is indeed Archie on bass and almost certainly Cal Batchelor, who was with Ayers most of '73 (I saw them! I feel old!), on lead. But it wasn't Ollie on the album either ~ 'twas Steve Hillage for this track. I think drums is Freddie Smith and keyboards Henry Crallan, all of 747.
thought it sounded a bit like Mike Oldfield but I'll go along with Calvin Batchelor - never heard of him but apparently he was in one of my old fave bands - Quiver was formed by Tim Renwick and Cal Batchelor in 1970 and teamed up with Sutherland Brothers in December 1972. seems he also played on 'The Confessions Of Dr. Dream And Other Stories' 1974 and the Al Stewart album 'Orange'

LYRICS
Sometimes I get too drunk,
I feel so god damn low
I have no place to go, no one to turn to
I think about your loving arms, where I'd like to be
But it's selfish as can be, and I know it
And if I'm sorry for myself, I'm sorry for you too
'Cause I'm the same as you, and I'm burning
So I sing for everyone who feels there's no way out
So maybe if you all shout someone will hear you
Listen to them shout
I won't say that I love you, 'cause that would be a lie
I can only say I try, and you know it
Love is something more or less than words can hope to say
It's something day to day in the life we're living
Lovers come and lovers go but friends are hard to find
Yes I can count all mine on one finger
So I sing for everyone who feels there's no way out
So maybe if you all shout someone will hear you
Listen to them shout
The distance that's between us, it just never seems to change
There's a whole mountain range of misunderstanding
So I sing for everyone who feels there's no way out
So maybe if you all shout someone will hear you
Listen to them shout
