Those are sand spurs, aka stickers. They love sandy areas, like beaches , and the little pod can remain dormant for 10 years and still grow. We live in Florida and they are everywhere on the sand hill we live on. I’ve been pulling them for years, and they always come back.

The Sand Spurs are also known as "Goat's Head", sometime it's called Puncturevine. They can be found in many locations. Best to dispose of them in the trash if possible, or burning them.

I used to live on the beach in Treasure island Florida and I used to ride my bike on the beach there and not much due to the sand spurs since I got flat tire from them every time I did so I quit riding on the beach.

My family were lighthouse keepers and light buoy tenders in the 20th century and hail from Cape Hatteras. We even have a street named after us "Fulcher Lane." When I went on a family reunion to the outer banks years ago we visited the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and climbed to the top where we saw manta rays swimming in the surf below. We also ate blue crab cakes and key lime pie which is to die for, and went beach combing for seashells outside our hotel. You explored some other sights I didn't get to see, so that was new and exciting to see. It's too bad you didn't get to see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse without the scaffolding nor to visit Ocracoke Island. But you did get to see the Bodie Island Lighthouse, which is just as beautiful, and the Wright Brothers Memorial too.🐬🐟🐙🐚

Congratulations on finding the Outer Banks Sarah. I've been maybe a hundred times over 40 years. It's a VERY special place. The weather dictates everything as you learned. It's a real shame that you didn't get to ride the ferry to see Ocracoke. It's even MORE special than Hatteras Island. I hope you stay and get to see more. Safe travels.

Love that you never shy away from showing the trials, tribulations and "unglamorous side" of vehicle living, and generally just keeping it honest and authentic. We appreciate it.
Despite the unlucky parts and frustrating experience with the ferry, it seemed like a really fun adventure around the outer banks.
I love the beach, the ocean, the sand, the sun, swimming, surfing, and all things around these things. Even when it's cold and windy. I definitely have a "Blue Mind".
Was cooking the tofu curry as much a pain in the butt as you'd expected, or was it worth it? 😆
The intro on this episode was amazing. Some really beautiful shots and history! Did you film the drone shots?
Love this new iteration of the rav4 setup, you've got a nice little spot to sit and hang out now! 😊
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend 💚

Sorry about your experience with sandspurs. They are all over the south, the worst in Florida. My first encounter with them was as a 15 year old going ashore from our boat to Egmont Key and running up the beach into a patch. They are so hard to get off and then they itch. Watch out for them, but the best way to get them off is using gardening gloves that are preferably leather. Oh, and also watch out for fire ants in the south. They are painful, itchy and then form blisters. You will be fine as long as you keep aware of your surroundings. You also will not want to camp near alligator infested waters in Florida. I hope I don't sound like a downer, I loved the south, especially when I was birdwatching. Keep sharing your journeys!

If you get down to Georgia, there's a big ol' statue of Charles Lindbergh to go with your Wright brothers.
Here in Washington state, our ferry system has a problem with all the boomer crew and mechanics aging out of the work force (also, the fleet is pretty old). Lots of missed runs, and shuffling the boats around to replace those out of service.

Thank for this video. I grew up and worked there most of my life. It is nothing as it once was. There used to be one way in and one way out. Highway 12 was a two lane road and the only way to get to and from the beach. I have been through many bad storms there. It is so commercial now. I now live in Michigan and it been awhile since I have been there. This brought back some memories for me. Just so you know it is pronounced Co-rall-a, Corolla is a car. This is how we locals could tell if you were a tourist.

Highly recommend someday staying in Salvo (near Rodanthe) on Hatteras Island -- in one of those enormous rental houses on the beach -- with a bunch of friends and/or family. At sunrise you'll have the beach to yourselves and the nearby Salvo Day-Use park on Pamlico Sound is a great place to watch the sunset from your kayak. Always take out travel insurance, just in case of a hurricane forecast. Friends and I have been going there for years -- every October when the businesses are still open and the summer crowds and summer heat/humidity are long gone. If kiteboarding or windsurfing are your thing then go in September when the winds are blowing steady and fast. If you have fishing enthusiasts in the family, they'd love it.

I love the Outer Banks in the summer but they roll up the sidewalks after Labor Day and the constant breezes keep it cold. (That ferry runs when they feel like it in the off season. It has nothing to do with the storms. It’s ALWAYS like that once the tourists leave for the season!) I hope you’re in a warmer climate this week! It’s gotten REALLY cold at night in southern Virginia and NC! I would like to be in a warmer climate myself! I had to turn the heat on last night, the wind chill was in the teens!
Have a great week! Safe travels!

Always nice to visit America, and Nikki and yourself show me places I may never be able to make it to. Disabled and not trip worthy for a while. So, I live thru you both. If you hit a spot I might want to visit, I'll write it down as a possibility. Since you're headed to Florida, stop off in the panhandle up to Gulf Shores, Alabama. White sand beaches and lots of things to do, pretty much year round in the "dirty south"..lol. If you ever get up thru Alabama, central Alabama has a lot of nice places to visit, and hiking Cheaha mountain, up to Tennessee and Gatlinburg to the Appalachian trail, over to Arkansas or Mississippi there are lots of things to do and see. Anyway, take care on your travels, always. You are an inspiration to young and older women, and us old guys, too, with your energy and exploratory nature with our country. Cheers.

I'm really surprised you didn't know there were voyages to the New World before the Pilgrims. They were originally supposed to join Dutch settlers in Virginia who were busy making money growing tobacco. But because they didn't leave England until almost October, they ran into stormy seas and ended up much farther north. Cape Cod was already named by Basque fishermen who had been fishing those waters for decades.

I read a comment that it’s part of the NC curriculum but it wasn’t part of NY

@@sarahhberkowitz I'm 50 years old and a college graduate, but also never knew this. Interesting how different the curriculum is/has been throughout the country.

OBX! We were just down there a couple of weeks ago. A another fact about the area: the county and the road right next to the beach in the main part of OBX are both named for Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the colonies.
