  • Why Wout Van Aert’s Giro Plan Is Total NONSENSE
    For the past few weeks, there have been countless rumors about Wout van Aert’s alleged decision to take on the 2024 Giro d’Italia, and he finally confirmed all those speculations to be true. After all those years, he put his foot down and his cyclocross schedule to chase the pink jersey for the first time in his career. But as good as this might sound, it’s not looking like a good idea. So why does Wout van Aert’s plan to race the Giro make no sense? And how would this affect the Jumbo-Visma?

    one big problem with this analysis is: Jumbo doesn't need Wout to win the TdF or be 100%. They just need him to do some work. If he loses some weight, he may not be able to face up against pure sprinters, but he'll still be a huge threat in 1 day Classics. Losing the weight may even make him better in those 250km+ races.

    Well, I think he can pull it off, he's the kind of powerhorse like Mercks was, and instead of working for a leader, he´ll be the leader of a team in a grand tour, with his skillset I think he may surprise the cycling world. The next season is looking very promising.

    I don't know why you talked so much about Wout doing the Giro and the Tour.
    He talked about his goals were going to the Giro and the Olympics, and he would miss the Tour completely in order to be 100% at them.
    I don't think Jumbo actually needs to send him to the Tour anyway. As long as Vingegaard is the best climber in the world, they can send Kruijswijk, Tratnik or Valter instead of him and not miss a beat.

    Van Aert wants more resources to support his ambitions, one of them is to try his hand at a grand tour.
    By sending him to the Giro with a team of promising youngsters, Visma gives a chance to Wout and a great learning opportunity of learning for the rest of the team.
    Pretty sure WVA will teach them all they need to know about being a good domestique and even if he doesn't win it'll be a good experience for everyone.

    Wout is good enough to dictate what he wants and why should he just be a domestique for Vingegaard. Vingegaard will have to try and win the TDF without Wout. All the A listers GC guys are doing the TDF so this years is Wout's best chance to win the Giro! Wout going for the Giro makes sense to me.

    Well, Primoz is gone, and they sort of have to go for all three GT's, after having won them in 2023! So, why not let Wout give it a shot, and maybe that is some new motivation for him as well. Can't really see him win it, but sounds like a great entertaining Giro to see him go for it. And he is a true class rider after all. For once, the Visma team is taking a long shot. I like it.

    The Giro is the one tour that has seriously deep pockets and is willing to shell out huge appearance fees for specific riders. He’s doing it for the pay day, just like MDVP did last year. Wout just has a slight GC potential in a weak field, so that plays it up more. I don’t blame him, he’s probably getting a few hundred thousand euro just to line up.

  • @joowsty
    @joowsty 7 місяців тому +2

    i dont see why it would be a bad plan. cyclists of similar posture have won the Giro before him, an important example is Tom Dumoulin. Dumoulins weight before he turned GC rider was about the same weight as Wout now is. So Wout would have to lose weight, but why could he not do that, like Dumoulin did. I know for some ppl weight loss doesnt work, but you cant know if Wout is one of those ppl. I doubt very much that Pogacar would do the Giro this year, for 2 reasons, first he lost the Tour this year because of how much he ride before the Tour (and the crash ofcourse), so why would he now ride even more. on top of that its the olympics next year. and the reason you bring here that noone did it in 19 years before Froome, that was because most of the Tour de France winners, like Armstrong, Ullrich, Indurain etc always only did 1 grand tour a year, the Tour the France. so it wasnt cuz it was too hard, it was just cuz they only cared about the Tour. a good example on the contrary is Sepp Kuss last year, he did 3 grand tours and was super good in all 3 of them. Wout would also only ride ass helper in the Tour, or maybe he would even skip the Tour in favour of the olympics.
    finally ofcourse it could lower his chances for the spring classics, but he has been focussing on that for the last 5 years and it didnt bring him any wins there (except milan san remo, but the 2 he wanted to win were Flanders and Roubaix). so yea, he could keep trying year after year without lowering his weight and still dont win those. or try to become a GC rider and maybe still have a slim chance in the spring classics too (specially Flanders as we saw lighter riders like Pogacar can also win there).

    • @S0ulinth3machin3
      @S0ulinth3machin3 7 місяців тому +1

      I agree. Also, there's nothing that say that a lighter Wout wouldn't be a younger Miguel Indurain. They have similar characteristics in the time trial and Indurain was never able to become a true threat to win at a GC until he cut the weight.

    • @joowsty
      @joowsty 7 місяців тому +1

      @@S0ulinth3machin3 yes its just the question how will his weight cut affect him, cuz there have also been examples where it didnt work, like with Cancelara, Martin, Olano or Dennis.

    • @S0ulinth3machin3
      @S0ulinth3machin3 7 місяців тому

      @@joowsty at worst, if it doesn't work, he can put the weight back on and he's still a guy who won the Mont Ventoux stage at the TdF, the guy who set a pace for Vingegaard so ferocious on the Hautacam at the TdF that Pogacar was dropped. The guys you listed, none of them were at that level in the high mountains. I think if Wout is at the level of summer of 2022, he could win the Giro. Even if he's off that level a bit, he's still a contender.

    • @erlendsteren9466
      @erlendsteren9466 6 місяців тому

      I dont like the idea of a lighter Wout. I would like him to keep those very good muscles. I am not sure, but I think Knut Asle Arvesen lost weight during his career, and he never got better than he was as U23 rider (World Champion). I believe that the riders should compete at the weight that they naturally gain in order to get the best out of themselves. Which means that Wout will never be a better climber than Vingegaard (at his best), but he will always beat hin in the sprints.

    This analysis is - I'd say - idiotic to some extent, as it is based on the assumption that van Aert would want to be a domestique for a third TdF in a row. But who tells you that he was happy doing that and considerably lowering his chances of personal successes in the past two seasons? Also, he didn't win much in 2023 and never raced for GC (apart from the 2021 Tirreno-Adriatico, where he finished 2nd, behind Pogačar), so he might just want to win a lot of relevant GT stages (which he could definitely do at the Giro) to regain confidence before the Worlds or the Olympics or just want to test himself as a GC rider in a grand tour to understand what would be better for him to do in his future years. Beside that, while it's absolutely true that it's hard to be competitive at both the Giro and the TdF when it comes to an overall victory or a GC leader, it's not so if you're planning to just be a domestique at the TdF (just look at Kuss last year), as you wouldn't need to go to the TdF on top form to be a domestique. The only weak part in his season plan is the fact that he wants to be competitive at both the spring classics and the Giro, which is historically extremely difficult (if not impossible) to combine, even given the very different preparation those races require. But the rest is truly bs.

    MVDP used the tour as prep for WC, Jumbo isn't going to do that with Wout if Jonas is in trouble. So it best if Wout say flat out "No" I am not going to the TdF.
    Because guys like you would call him a bad teammate if he does go to TdF, but refuses to drive himself into asphalt to help Jonas. It's best if he doesn't go, he deserves... No he has earned the right to prepare for this coming season without babysitting Jonas.

Wout was Always a GC rider but his managment have chosen he must support and work for Vingegaard and in somme cases for roglic . If Wout can spread his energie over several stages he could perform verry well . But if Pogacar and Remco joining the Giro the chanse of winning the giro for Wout is verry small. In the TT Pogacar and Remco are performing verry wel as you know. So Jumbo must comme up with a spectaculiar plan to give Wout a chanse of Wout winning the giro.
