I got yelled at a LOT when I did my first few group rides 8 years ago. I took it so personally I just rode solo for 7 years and only started dabbling back in groups last year. Didn't realize the difference between drop vs no-drop rides, and I think this distinction is a really important but not obvious thing for a lotta newbie riders. Don't be like me.
Oh man I had a similar early experience with group rides. My first road bike was my dad's old bike and he's about 4 inches taller than me. So the fit was wayy too stretched out and it was hard for me to properly control... I got yelled at so much. It just bums me out when someone new shows up and they have that same experience. And we wonder why "road is dying." Also amazing point about drop vs no drop
@@ChainlessTV Better late than never man. Also could you also add the distance remaining? Kinda like how Jeff does it from Norcal. Some of the crits usually only have lines on the ground for the finish and it's really hard to see when you guys are going fast, it can also give as an idea how long/short you guys open up your sprint to the finish.
Im from Holland, in my second year takin it seriously (when it comes to focus). Im no way near as fast as this. But still catching up with the local drop group ride. I was so proud of myself last week stickin to the first wheel on the 1k climb (4.2%) goin around 25/26 an hour. Haha. Might be able to race in lowest cat if in US. But for now i love the semi race on sundays. Its so cool gettin urself challenged by the faster riders and keepin up with them and seein more experienced riders dropping. Then the road to the 1k climb trough the forresty area is like goin on a mission in a helicopter. For me at least. The rush after lasts for days knowing u gave it all, almost got dropped barely held the wheel with all ur might.
Amazing! You will progress fast. I know the rush you are talking about, it's such a good feeling. Riding with people stronger/ better than you is daunting but it's the best way to learn
great video and information, i was always afraid to ride with the faster riders and getting dropped, and riding by myself anyways. but they say the only way to get faster is ride with the fast guys.
I dont know of a strava group but there is a facbook group called SacramentoRiverRide. They have some info on there, there are actually a bunch of different rides, this was the "Tuesday Serpentine" route
4:52 Returned to this video to say thank you @ChainlessTV. Competed in my first race on Saturday (my 2nd time riding in a group of riders). Was yelled at by cat 3 guys (cat 3, 4, 5 field), but I seriously remembered what you said in this video, kept a cool head and was able to shrug it off. Instead of being discouraged, I managed to finish the race and snuck onto the podium for cat 5 bronze; thanks again!
That is so amazing to hear, you made my day! A cool head is such an asset in racing, all those guys are just wasting energy yelling. I'm sure you have plenty more podiums in your near future!
@@m.ncycles ah the old if your opponents are yelling at you, you must be doing something right 😂 i feel like I'm a nonconfrontational person but in a bike race I totally change
Hey awesome, there are tons of group rides in Sac. This website has starting times/ spots for most: sacramentoriverride.blogspot.com/?fbclid=IwAR1R7E-7Rdt7H4N2XLiSSXx9fv_kNmnC-o5uzZKUcf0jLonEnZ2-gtwACqI. The ride in this particular video is the River Ride which is Tuesday at 6pm
Unfortunately, I don't get to group ride much because I have 4 young kids at home, but I love them! I approach fast group rides the way you do and you have good tips! You're Cat1 strong 💪. I hope to be Cat4 one day 😂😂. Mind sharing your w/kg # for FTP? Just curious 🙂. I'm stuck at 3.5-3.7 (which I'm happy with because I started at 2.5 two years ago LOL), but how did you breakthrough your plateaus? Strength training? Nutrition? Higher training volume? Erc
That's awesome you find any time to train with 4 kids! Cycling can take over our lives but it's good to stay grounded with what really is important :) I haven't done an ftp test in a while but my guess would be I'm around where I usually top out for the season which is 340 watts at 73ish kg. Its funny you ask about plateaus because I am excited to be at that power level somewhat early in the season so hopefully I can break through it and mayyyybe get to ~5w/kg. Sadly I think the best way to break through a plateau is more volume. It really is all personal to you though; I see a noticeable increase in power on the bike when I strength train but I know some people hate it. I want to make some videos about training because I am super interested in sports physiology/human performance. I think heat training is a "secret weapon," you probably already get some on that stimulus because you do a lot of turbo trainer work. I could go on and on... I think more volume and more recovery always helps. It's just tough to balance that with a job and kids etc. Also I should say that is an awesome ftp, you could easily smash Cat4 races
@@ChainlessTV super strong, man! My first bucket goal is 4.0wkg and then second is 300w. If I EVER achieve those then I will look further beyond that. With 4 kids, sometimes I have to sacrifice sleep and wake up at like 4:00am if I want to ride outside for maybe 2-3 hours. Haven't done that this year yet because I don't live in balmy CA haha. I'm also super interested in sports physiology/training and when the TR podcast does deep dives into topics, I'm engrossed lol. I'm gonna try strength training more and more volume on the bike and see how it goes. Thanks for the encouragement - don't think I can smash any races yet (as evidenced by my first two race videos lol), but I'll give it a go every time! I am happy with my improvement over the course of time so far, especially because I have never done anything endurance-oriented in my life - all my sports are more punchy (basketball, tennis, soccer, etc). Thanks for your videos and the feedback! I enjoy watching the Terun Elite team through video 😆
@@ChainlessTV You mention strength training and I want to try it but I don't want to go to a gym. Do you think body exercises like 50-100 squats twice a week would help? I'm also stuck at 3.6wkg
@@haorob I think it would totally help! It wont give you as much stimulus as a heavy weight lifting session but you can do a lot with body weight exercises. I have been traveling around quite a bit recently and havent had access to a gym and have been doing body weight stuff and it can nuke your muscles. Specifically "explosive" stuff, like burpees and split squat jumps, can make me super sore. Also you can do one legged exercises to make things harder. This definitely might help you get over a plateau but honestly I think checking up and making sure you are recovering adequately is the best practice. If you are feeling good and still stagnating then adding volume and strength training has helped me. 3.6wkg is right at the point where you really have to start earning your increases
@@ChainlessTV i tried some body weight exercises but they tire me out very quickly and gettin me sore. So i figure might as well go do zwift in off season. Doing specific focus on the bike gets u just as far i read. For tourists/amateurs it should be enough? I do want a better sprint though. However i managed to ad around 4km to my sprint top speed this year just on the bike compared to last year. While now maintaining my top speed from last year for a minute or so.

I love riding with the fast guys - it extends me far more than solo....and if they do drop me then it's a solo training [endurance] ride.
5:25 my man with the quill stem if it aint broke dont fix it (white and pink)
Such a cool bike! I also like me a quill stem
Looks like a race then a group ride
I cant even get my heart rate up to 180 with feeling like im going to pass out. I guess i should stick with solo riding
Ah it's tough. If you can slowly build up with intervals that can help. But I like solo riding too, I would say 90% of my riding is solo
I go up to Sac/Folsom fairly frequently. Is there a Strava group for this ride?
