I always felt sorry for the second doctor. He's the only one to have his regeneration forced, rather than dying. It's very depressing hearing him yell no over again at the end.

If Dr Who had been cancelled after this episode we would have lost every subsequent Dr starting with Jon Pertwee ETC I was born in 1969 2 months before this episode was broadcast and I would never have seen Dr Who I grew up with Tom Baker as Dr Who and when Dr Who was cancelled in 1989 the year I turned 20 I was well and truly hacked off and IMO Dr Who has not really returned even since 2005 with Chris Eccleston and every actor since to me Dr Who is sadly dead and gone

This is unintentionally very dark if you think about it. The actors and production team could only really work with the knowledge they had, the rules and nature of regeneration had yet to be worked out, so at the time it was really was just a 'change in appearence'. Now we know so much more about it, that the Doctor's punishment was basically execution and the forced ending of one his lives. The only way therefore to interpret the Doctor's reaction, indignation, is that he's temporarily gone into denial at the extremes to which his people have gone to punish him. Basically, 'we're killing you in two minutes then dumping you on a back water where you'll never bother us again unless we need you'.

Going off of more recent episodes, death on Gallifrey is treated more as a case of "man flu". And while the Doctor's obviously not going to see it that way, he's never exactly meshed well with Gallifreyan society. Hell, even his first and most Time Lord-y incarnation saw fit to hijack a TARDIS and bail.

Patrick tried to inject a little levity into it, but the scene is just so dark. What an unmerited end to a version of the Doctor that was so kind and had done so much good. He was portrayed not as a stodgy fatherly figure but rather as everyone's goofy uncle with a heart of gold. It was a grave injustice and the Timelord CIA Agents come off as infuriating, self righteous jerks--which means the actors playing them did a good job!! I firmly believe that if the Troughton years were more complete and shown on tv more, his Doctor would be loved by many more people.

I honestly don't blame that. We were in the early years of media back then but a lot of media was disposed of because it was much more difficult/expensive to maintain and store them, at least what I've been told (well how it was explained when I looked it up). I've also been told the BBC at least kept all the audio recordings from every Doctor Who episode which is something. It is a pity how difficult it is to just have ALL of Doctor Who in one place especially when you're me and have just recently (well, 2 - 4 years ago) gotten really into and are trying to find everything to consume.

Well, after The War Games they certainly lost their touch, as the Doctor was the one who saved them ultimately and the universe from Omega's will and intent of destroying everything in it. (This occurs in The Three Doctors story) Sure, they might have retained a bit of their cruelty and power since, but that is not what made them so intimidating or 'creepy' as Ron puts it, in the War Games. It's the fact that they feel very calm and merely use their intelligence and inherited powers to submit someone to their will or else they will die. Keep note of how they killed the War Lord and the few of the guards under his command. They literally wiped them from existence with virtually very little effort on their part and were very formal and efficient in doing so. The problem with the Time lords since this time is that they come across as either arrogant or just plainly not as superior as they once appeared to be. Even with all their fancy clothing these days. The Timelord's here dressed plainly to emphasise that they did not need to outwardly dress themselves up to make themselves feel more powerful as they were not remotely insecure about their status as powerful beings.

Hell Bent was the worst for them. What was good about them in the Classic Series was even though they did come under threat a few times they never considered the Doctor a threat. In Hell Bent everyone is acting like the Doctor can take them all on.
The Doctor is probably the time lord equivalent of James Bond. He's more capable than most time lords and can definitely cause some chaos but he shouldn't stand a chance against all of Galifrey.

Hartnell was the most alien of the Doctors(because it was before his obsession with Earth). He was never explicitly on anyone's side(at least in the earlier serials) and all the companions could do was hope that his hidden agenda would match with theirs in a time of crisis.

Even going so far to find Jamie again and travel with him., until he grew old and as he was regenerating was placed by the secret service back into his own timeline. It’s still pretty terrible in retrospect. We really didn’t know what regeneration was (neither did the writers) at this time. With the current knowledge the Timelords basically killed the second Doctor (because its still death for the most part) and wasted one of his 12 regenerations prematurely (pushing him closer to an earlier final death) as punishment. That’s just harsh. Not to mention it’s been described to be very painful during the process (I imagine ever cell changing in an instant would). This is just dark.

According to "TARDIS data core wiki" this was not his regeneration. Apparently the CIA interrupted his regeneration, and brought Doctor 2 back to life. He was free to roam the galaxy, as long as he was working for them. The only televised adventure Doctor 2 had while working for the CIA was in "The Two Doctors" but he had many more, which can be read in comic books and novels. The Timelords eventually captured the second doctor, erased his memory of working for the CIA, dragged him into his old TARDIS, and forced him to regenerate. The next place The TARDIS landed was of course, at UNIT headquarters

      Theory:
The Doctor is regenerated into Jo Martin and exiled to earth. The Time Lords decide she could also be useful working for them, so they recruit her and send her on top secret missions and stuff. At some point the Doctor escapes, flees back to earth and hides with the Chamelion Arch. After they find her they bring her back to Gallifrey, declare her unfit to continue working for them, wipe her memories and all evidence of this incarnation, regenerate her into Jon Pertwee and send her back to exile on Earth.
This would explain the time period the Time Lady is from and the classic design of the Tardis.

smth really interesting here is that it sets the precedent that leads to Peter Capaldi’s tenure as the Doctor. The Doctor has the opportunity to CHOOSE a face, it isn’t simply a random assignment as it seems. when 11 regenerated into 12, the implication was that he chose that face so as to always remember that he should save SOMEONE; as Donna Noble had pushed him to save Caecilius in Pompeii. that precedent is set through the Time Lords allowing the 2nd to choose a face, before they assign one for him. its a curious thing in the lore, since we also have Time Lords referencing the change in appearance as though their age, gender and appearance are entirely random. it implies that Time Lords can have control over such things, but very rarely do they, which carries some interesting complexities about what regeneration is in itself - esp since the writers have no rules to make a clear idea of what it is.

In the Deadly Assassin (4th Doctor story) the TimeLords said time and again that "Once past the 13 regeneration there is no plan to postpone death" since in that story the Master had ran out.
Things may have changed due to the Time War but during this episode and a good deal of time beyond it they didn't know how or if it was even biologically possibile or safe to go beyond 13. Rassilon during the war probably gave them the secret to additional lives since he was the one who created the genetic augmentation to allow TimeLords to regenerate in the first place.

Actually, the council being able to, through technological intervention, bestow new ones was mentioned back in "The Five Doctors" - they offered the master (then on his last one and running around in a hijacked body) a new cycle as a reward for working together with them. Didn't sound like it was something they did often, but obviously all rules would've gone out of the window during the war....
In any case, this just seems to be something they do as a punishment, maybe a step down from a proper execution.

Kendrix Havlik What has a later story got to do with the War Games?
There is actually some contesting thoughts about that bit in the Five Doctors. Since the Master wasn't in a TimeLord body at the time (He had taken over a Traken Body) that had not regenerated before it could be that the TimeLords could grant an 'Un-regenerated' body a cycle of regenerations. But it wouldn't be the Master in his original form regenerating, nor the Masters body itself, so it would techically be the stolen body of Tremas that regenerated.
River Song proved that the regenerating power of the TimeLords is something that any species could posses, the Gallifreyans just chose to keep the power to themselves.
Similar thing to bringing back the Master from the dead, a new body means new regenerations. Prior to the Sound of Drums, the Master was totally destroyed mind and body and never returned until somehow the TimeLords ressurected him from the Time Vortex during the Time War.
Some even say that the 12 regeneration rule was imposed because the 13th regeneration was supposed to be fatal (it was possible but it would kill the one regenerating) or that it involved risks because regenerating a body more than 12 times could cause serious problems that made it more kinder to die rather than carry on.
TimeLord society is still shrouded in mystery, we can speculate all we want about why there was a 12 regeneration rule but the fact is we know very little about it. Even though there are books and audios that delve into the TimeLord history a little they are not technically cannon to the TV series and are therefore useless, and with Rassilon (The one who created the ability to regenerate) coming into the Time War who knew what went on.
According to a book called the World Game, the ending of the War Games is faked. The Second Doctor was actually sentanced to exicution (Real death), but was saved by the Gallifreyan CIA (Celestian Invervention Agency) who wanted an agent to do their dirty work. They then faked the end of the Doctors trial and that is what we saw on TV. This lead into the fan speculated series 6B (Caused by cannon mistakes in 6th Doctor story, The Two Doctors) where the second Doctor and Jamie continue their travels for a great many more years until for some mysterious reason the CIA handed the Doctor back to the TimeLords with a reduced sentance of regeneration and exile.
However, how cannon the books are is open to speculation.

The saddest regeneration in my opinion as it was done by force and not naturally. And to think about it number 2 was mocking future incarnations of himself when his fellow time lords were giving him choices.

Literally every f****** regeneration is done by force what do you think they chose to die even the 8th Doctor Who had a choice in what he regenerated into did it by force because the alternative was being dead permanently

The Doctor typically hates future incarnations. Two especially hated Three. Didn’t like Six either.
