love how candid you are. we all get out there with brand new gear and have to figure it out from time to time. glad you got on them and had fun. couldn't imagine running an entire spool of 40 lb mono. i used to run 12 lb mono on my schoolie rods growing up and it felt like an extension chord.
As successful as you are John, it’s awesome to see you step outside the box and try something different. I own the tsunami slow pitch paired with an SGN and it’s a freakin dream! Keep it up John !
Shimano makes a great one: flat fall. I went out and purchased this rod over the winter due to your other video with it. Paired it with a Tranx though. Haven’t used it yet. Going to use it for sea bass this weekend
John excellent video once again. This slow pitch jig looks very interesting and would love to try it. You should make a video if you have time on how you rigged your rod so we can give it a shot
We use those jigs a lot over here, slow jigs are usually used for bottom fish (Snappers, Groupers and Breams) we just let it hit the bottom and give it a few cranks then let it fall back to the bottom. I don't know where striped bass feed but if they're not hanging around the bottom this technique is probably not very good for them. I would like to see you try this technique for porgies, I think this will be more successful there.
Hey John... Good content like always.. I actually have the same set up but the rod is extra heavy and the reel is the 25 model. I'm going on vacation in the summer and going on one of those Gulfstream trips out of Myrtle Beach. Will this set up hold up to that kind of fishing?
Oh my Godess, John, you are the best! I swear I have been wanting to try "slow pitching" myself. I did the same.. watched a bunch of those Shimano videos with the Asian gentlemen just working it as if second nature. I picked up a Tsunami Slimwave last year and mainly have used it casting Hogy epoxies to Albies. But I know it's a slow pitching design and so I have been wanting to give it a go. (Also have an old Shimano Trevala, and wanted to compare the two using the technique.) Anyway... I'm so stoked that my favorite angler has done some experimenting with slow pitching and shared a video with us all. Very informative stuff regarding a niche technique that, coincidentally, I was thirsty for knowledge in. Actually, "squidding" is new to me as well (as I am a semi-newbie at this) so thanks for that info too. Awesome job figuring it all out and producing some nice fish. I expect there will be a run on slow pitching jigs at J&H by the time you read this. Thanks again! P.S. So... Ummmm... I'm assuming no forthcoming book titled "Slow Pitch Jigging with John Skinner?" Lol...
Jon I was taught the slow pitch on a tuna boat outa Manasquan. Its much faster than the one rotation your using between pitches. This winter I ice fished Lakers on my Humminbird and MAN they dont make reels that can outrun those. Then we had a blitzkrieg in Raritan last month and the SAME thing, you could NOT outreel #20 fish.
got a metalwitchmstc634sf quest w a shimano ocea jigger2000NRHG PE3 LINE. looks effective so I invested got the slowblatt tupe R and the slowblatt longs + some ovals and some butterfly jigs too. Hope to try next ling and rock cod trip.
Great video. It did not look like you were slow pitch jigging in the beginning. But it was hard to tell. Given that the squidding technique was working, you should have tried the short slow pitch. Which is a quicker and shorter crank lift and drop. Or, maybe a continuous bounce and crank like the deep drop guys do. Btw, it was probably too shallow to do.a slow pitch properly. The technique was meant to cover deep water columns.
Great video , I’m gonna try and do some jigging for bass and anything that bites next season . This video was good to learn from !! If you see this John how big is that center console? Or does anyone know the specs on his boat?
Hey John did you happen to do any casting with this rod I have the spinning rod with a Penn ssv 3500 for specs blues and stripers and love it but looking to put a fathom2 15 or 20 on one to see how it does as a casting striper rod
Nice action. Did you try three way bucktailing at all in that spot? My instinct was to use that technique at first but didnt have weights with me but did pull a few fish with a diamond jig. Looks like they're getting bigger.
u r the first one that i know who suggest that hooks to be in the back not in front, i been doing same with great success.the question now is why everyone use it with hooks in the front??any one know the answer??
Mohamed Elashaal because in slow pitch jigging, the main emphasis is usually getting the fish to bite on the fluttering fall of the jig. When the jig falls like that, it’s actually falling sideways so there is no “top” or “bottom”. One method is you lift and crank, lift and crank then control free spool the jig back down so it has an unencumbered flutter back down. This fluttering motion is often when the fish bite. When the fish see a fluttering baitfish (aka a dying or helpless baitfish) they will often attack the “head” and swallow it whole hence why the hooks are at the “front” where the “eyes” of the lure are.
Reel on the way up not on the way down...you need the slack in the line for the jig to flutter...if you reel on the way down you reel in the slack & the jig doesn't flitter
For those new to the video DONT BUY THE REEL lots of problems reported from J n H tackle (associated with skinner) and Bimini Bay outfitters customer service is absolutely terrible.
Can you share with us exactly what the problem is? I've had this reel for 4 years and abuse it in Florida on Goliath Grouper and it's been flawless. I don't knowingly recommend crap.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing on its second use the clicker knob popped off (first time testing it) J and H had me do a warranty claim through Bimini bay. On the call the guys at J and H said they've had lots of issues and told me if I had spoke to them first they would have recommended something else. After 2 whole months of dealing with Bimini bay they literally lost the reel after being completely terrible on their customer service end (one person is really to blame). The gentlemen from tackle advisors called me directly to take care of the issue and was beyond helpful. I also did not mean to imply that you would recommend anything inferior however if I had to deal with the company behind this reel again Id rather turn it into scrap metal.
I appreciate your followup. Sounds like you had terrible luck with that particular customer service rep. I know a couple of the head guys there and their heads would explode if they read this because they're very conscientious. Cool of J&H to steer you away from something with problems. I have a Maxel Hybrid 20 and it's an absolute winch on the Florida reefs.
Easy on the fish please. No need to swing them over to the boat like that. If you use $5 Gorilla gloves from home depot you keep super dexterity and can lip the fish no problem.
Indeed fishing gear has evolved greatly since the 50's but I'd trade its fishery for all the new tech.
Love the old content John. I’m just getting into slow pitch light weight setups and can’t wait to try it out on strippers. Cheers.

In Texas we call that smoking the slabs. Works great late Spring to early Fall at striper lakes. Nice video John
Excellent video. You're a knowledgeable but humble gentleman. Both my son and I love your videos. Keep the videos coming.
I can remember before monofilament we used braided dacron or braided nylon.
Penn Squiders was the high end reels.

This technique is a lot like vertically jigging lake trout. But the lakers are usually much deeper. Love the big slams while cranking up!
Thank you John, I’m purchasing it on Amazon now from your link. Can’t wait to give it a go.

I live a few miles from Jigging World. Great tackle shop run by great folks!,👍🏻👍🏻

Seems similar to the Shimano butterfly jigging system. I use a Trevela 6’6” Mh which seems like a similar rod.
Thanks for sharing.
a very flexible rod you got there
Great job John

16' 1974 Starcraft Holiday converted to a CC.
So was it determined that slow pitch jigging was not effective for stripers, or would it have worked out if, in this case, it was done shallower?
Hey John did you happen to do any casting with this rod I have the spinning rod with a Penn ssv 3500 for specs blues and stripers and love it but looking to put a fathom2 15 or 20 on one to see how it does as a casting striper rod
What rod is that? Looks like shimano TDR but i doubt u would use something that cheap
Tsunami slow pitch
Watching the rod bend over and over again nice work
Nice action. Did you try three way bucktailing at all in that spot? My instinct was to use that technique at first but didnt have weights with me but did pull a few fish with a diamond jig. Looks like they're getting bigger.
awesome video! just ordered that same exact rod. ever try it for togs?
Goin East!!!!
Great Vid!! Going to try this slow pitch out. What size hooks are you using with those jigs?

What made you want to try this style of fishing
It looks like you’re drifting towards a rip line, is that correct ? Thanks.
Yes.
where in long island do you fish?
Great video, how many ounces are the jigs you’re using in this video ?
100 grams.
Check out tai rubber luers very effective
Nice action
Don't retie and drive? Great stuff!
which rod rating do you like best for diamond jigging/squiding for striped bass...661mh, 681h or 701h
681H
good video
Hey john new sub here , love the videos ! What location are you fishing from , im near Niantic Ct.
eastern LI
John Skinner Fishing thank you
I'm foul hooked more bass this year than every year combined....as have a few other guys i fish with...very strange....
worth mentioning most of the plugs i use were equipped with singles.....big mag darters, 7" redfins, hydro minnows wood, etc
Jessups? Bass strike upward
Great vid👍🙏😍
keyport flats?
seems more like barneget bay now that i think about it
The Gut
Same combo
Any keepers?
Nice video. Buy one thing is that rod is made for a lefty reel because the eyes go to the left. U should get a rod that the eyes bend to the right.
Nomad damoN it helps with sensitivity and helps balance the wieght load when you have a fish on
George M. Actually the theory is it counteracts the torque of cranking with right hand retrieve.
Samoflido defidently not true. The line will rub against the rod and fray with it bending with wrong way
thats hows its built so it not bending the wrong way.
Spiral wrap does help with torquing, it also helps keep the line from catching on the guides while vertically pitching.
Plum Gut ?
Jessups
John Skinner on a BOAT$!!
How do you attach the GoPro to your hat or is that a go pro hat??
JAYFISH718 might not be a gopro. There's other cameras out there that's made for hats. I don't know which exactly but Google should know 😆
I know where you are Skinner!
For those new to the video DONT BUY THE REEL lots of problems reported from J n H tackle (associated with skinner) and Bimini Bay outfitters customer service is absolutely terrible.
It's not even a Tsunami reel.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I corrected it.

Dang!
that rod was working way too hard

I love u soooooo much dad
wtf
