Well well well, the embargo is up - and our interview is out. Today Mike sits down and discusses his experience at the FF14 media tour. He got to play one of the dungeons and a ton of Pictomancer and Viper - so check it out!
Great interview! You asked some very good questions. Although your grimace to his comment about Ultima Online was funny, but as an old school Ultima player he was kinda right because their was no story in Ultima online communities in that game formed from player run towns, to guild sponsored events, detailed RP storylines and yes stage plays happened was back in the Ultima Days. Always wished what UO could be if launched today with current tech.
What would be great is if Yoshi and the team would start giving Free Companies some love. I would love guild achievements to work on together, more perks for joining an FC, an in-game calendar, and a revamped FC window with sortable lists. I know in JP, FCs are not a priority, but in the west, growing up with MMOs, guilds are super-important. Someone should bring this up to Yoshi.
It's interesting that yoshi p said he wants the team to start pushing themselves and try not to always take the safe option. I felt like in this expansion, they took a really REALLY safe route to the point where a lot of jobs don't feel substantially changed. I'm curious the most about the future of job design.
When you talk about the bright loading screen, it really sound funny lol I'm one of those dark mode ppl and I thank you for bringing that up, bc for some ppl like myself, that kind of brightness really hurts... I'd like to add that this topic could be associated with acessibility, bc there are ppl who have different sensory processing, mostly neurodivergents :)
Hard to imagine, but despite the 'critically acclaimed' meme, Heavensward patch content saw the lowest player count in the game's history. Between Diadem iterations and Alexander raids, seems like it tripled down on the 1.0 trauma. End result was the team trying hard to be conservative with what risks they take and when.
By the way something I will say: I appreciate having the translator speak after yoshi p so I can listen to this while I’m driving instead of having to have my eyes glued to the screen ( 28:15 )
Happy for you Preach! You really do amazing interviews and I can tell Yoshi really enjoys speaking with you. I did you 2 go out for drinks? Also that hoodie is awesome I need one!
from that dungeon preview alone my faith in FFXIV battle is restored, we are going back on SHB era dungeon where more interesting mechanic but easy and fun to do, not a boring left right in out, stack
OMG, how the fuck did i miss that there was a gathering around my corner? im like so upset. Putting my personal feelings aside, im glad to hear you had a good time. Like finally able to just sit down for an hour even if its still in this journalist setting.
they need to remove the glamour limitations, like WoW did, i love the WoW armoury/glamour tab, you equip it / discover it you can always transmorg it, i find it weird that in FFXIV which is a high RP game they have this kind of limitation, (i haven't read if they will remove it or not but hopefully they will) , there is TOO MANY GOOD ARMORS just to chose a couple and delete the rest.
they said at the start of endwalker that they tried doing that, and it completely broke the test server, so they've been working on a solution since then
What I notice about the FF14 community that have been playing for a while is they all bash stuff and hate on it so it's removed. Then they complain in the next expansion that the devs cut the thing they constantly whined about. People may criticize the devs for being afraid to take chances, but players (especially content creators) need to learn how to communicate well and maybe be a bit reflective before just reacting.
@@Urbish Yoship also commented on that, regretting removing meks from designs instead of workshopping them so hopefully there will be a shift in Dawntrails or 8.0's design
That's pretty much every gaming community ever in SP or MP. First game did feature X people complain, second game removes, reworks or replaces x with y people complain again or suddenly say how good x was. One of the reasons why a lot of game dev studios don't or rarely listen to their audience anymore. "You think you do but you don't" still holds true in many cases.
I think it's good they add some extra difficulty to games. Sure it gonna be hard the early times, but gonna learn the patterns over time. Hiro from the PSO2 team also try to find a balance. Usually for Giant bosses: there it's hard mode (small party) for maybe 2 weeks, then they add another bit easier mode (big party) 2 weeks later
I am well and truly ready to move on from Endwalker. However, I will say that the login screen was the best. After getting blasted in Stormblood and Shadowbringers, I really enjoyed the darker screen and mellow melody.
If you are only speaking english it may be hard, however if you are multilingual its a lot easier, especially if you speak a language that has a base on vowels, like a latin based language, or a japanese based one, there is a reason the portuguese where historically able to communicate with the Japanese, and not the germanic ones. Thats is why a latin speaker will understand better phonetic languages like japanese, or even aztec, i mean they did understand each other when they arrived there.
I miss your old videos that you used to do about improving your mmorpg game play. Your (I think it was called) get gud for Christmas series actually got me key bound and I am no longer a clicker. I would love to see you do more series like this. I know then it was wow specific, but a lot of those skills can be used for any mmorpg. Maybe something on improving in game/in raid situational awareness, improving movement (though I think you have covered this), key binding to a keyboard vs a mouse vs a controller. HUD layouts and where data should be. How to perfect your opener. Or whatever else. I would just really love to see that style of content from you again. You helped me improve so much during my years of playing WoW and I would love to be able to turn to you again to continue to improve my game play in all kinds of mmo's. Even if you make these FFXIV focused that would be amazing!
Kinda weird that Ivalice is still considered one of the best raids to do despite its 'maths' and other pretty tough mechanics that received plenty of 'complaints'. I know listening to feedback is important but they probably could do with understanding people who are content don't scream as much.
28:00 He's so fuckin right. Taking the "safe" route is what led to the 1.0 failure, when they thought they only had to keep doing what worked in the past and they'd be golden. I'm so glad Yoshi-P is dedicated to staying on this game. What a guy
No no I meant it in a way that the expansion is kinda lighthearted more than previous expansions same with Pandaria was more lighthearted (at the start) than previous expansions like Cata and Wotlk.
Just some feedback: listening to this at work & really interested in what Yoshi-P has to say about the topic you're bringing up about 25mins in. That part with his answer goes on for a bit & I can't just stop & read it, would've loved an audio translation of the subtitles.
I think with the painting thing, it really comes down to the Blood lily type math at a higher level. The idea of blood lily is it hits super hard, but it takes like 10 seconds worth of GCD's, 3 heals, then the cast of the skill itself to deploy the Blood Lily. The reality is that its DPS Neutral to do a Blood Lily, or do 4 filler spells because the potency ends up being the same. And I think the painting is just going to be the same question at the end of the day. If it a DPS gain or loss to lose 2 GCDs channeling this ability, and then spending it on the painting itself, or is it a DPS loss, and instead, you want to invest Swifts into it for a DPS gain, or when the boss is transitioning or w/e, you want to utilize the downtime of a fight to build up your paintings

18:40 reminds me of how gw2 auto attack chains work, the 1 skill for each weapon specifically.
The Media Tour floodgates have opened. RIP my UA-cam inbox.
Today is gonna be a hell of a day indeed
..throw wide the gates..
ah hell no..
Im already having trouble keeping up! Goddamit!
Mrhappy spam was real
players: mechanincs are harder?
yoshi P: yes GIT GUD.
Did yoship just ask preach out on a date live on camera
It's a work date!

It wasn't fake, it was really his landlord and Mike's playing it off. lol
That's really cool SE went the extra mile to get you an interview with Yoshi P. Good on them.
I like to think Yoshi P sits in Mike's stream spamming ratJAM too.
Great video, gonna listen to interview at work later! Praise chat bubbles!
bought a tts calling Mike a clown and a peasant
Praise to chat bubbles.
turns out it wasnt the rat, it was Yoshi-P all along
"Keyressu ando pooru!" ~ Yoshida, probably.
MY MAN MADE IT Pog
16:40 "I'm still forming a picture of how Pictomancer works".
I see what you did there.
Nobody does interviews like you Mike, well done as usual!
I can feel YoshiP's pain when Preach mentioned chat bubbles lmao
So happy to see Preach get invited to media tour.

Aight ill die happy if Mike can get Yoshi P. to shout "holla Ballers and a brofist to you all".
I can actually hear that in his accented english and its great.
omg that intro, my heart can only take so much ill come back when I'm called.
I love that interview - it really felt like 2 game devs talking shop, and it was amazing.
You deserve these opportunities for ya. You've been such a staple for alot of people and you always give great interviews
the ultimate chad got invited to a dinner with yoshi (somewhat) (maybe)

Holy shit viper essentially has an enmity combo pog
The editing is sublime *chefs kiss*
Definitely deserved Mike, that’s awesome you got to chat with Yoshi P himself.
For a minute there, I was fully convinced you hadn't been invited to the media tour, and I was pretty bummed, but now I'm thrilled 🎉
This is so good! I love this game and community so much

Shit, yoshi-p actually likes Preach, you can see the difference with some of the "Just ask your 3 questions so I can move on..." people.
came here to give like be back later to watch full thing
As someone who likes big turret casters... I *like* having some longer casts. It's part of the skill of playing that type of character.

Hopefully what Yoshi P said is something that comes true, but from what I have seen from the DT release, they are still afraid of failure.
