DAVE! Check for Bootboard Brackets, ie for securing a bootboard, if they aren't present (or for that year the holes aren't there, it's just a mini...not a Cooper...and if you paid a premium for a cooper the guy owes you some money!!! As an aside keep the 10 inch wheels, they handle best that way!!!
Bad obsession Motorsports project binky. One of my favorite builds on UA-cam. You should check them out. See if you can build something similar. Only cause it bad a$$. But whatever you do cool car I enjoy the look of a mini
Dave you will have a blast driving the mini. Keep the 10in wheels don't go bigger. If you can find an all metal front end go for it. Yes that's an aftermarket rad the original was a lot smaller. Be careful that the rear subframe is set up correctly if not the car crab when driven and looks really strange. This thing set up will out handle anything you have. Gary..... England 🇬🇧
Alot of parts on British cars are very similar. As evidenced by the starter. If you need anything my father has a garage full of Triumph, MG and Austin used parts.
That's awesome Dave! I wanted to find one to restore for my dad (he was british). It was he and my mom's favorite car ever. He just passed away in April, so I'll be watching this series closely. :)
Came back to your channel to check up on the rx7 and i'm glad to see u are saving a mini ! Those old early 60s mini had a switch on the floor for the start up.
Fantastic mini project, getting rare as hens teeth now, I’ve had several when I was younger. Think there the greatest fun on four wheels !!! There’s loads you can do to them. Fantastic will be watching with interest as I live 20miles from where they were made 😊👍
I love those little cars and yes you will fit as I'm taller than you and I have in the past, you can't use the back seat and you drive it like a go cart but that just adds to the fun. You can tell that's an early one due to the rear lights, door handles and the size of the wheel arches as the later ones are bigger. Also sliding windows rather than roll down windows.
Just building my 14th mini, if you keep the flip front, make sure you add subframe brace bars. See what engine size you have, the engine number will start with either 85H, 99H, 10H or 12H, meaning 850cc, 998cc, 1100cc or 1275cc. If you add 13 inch wheels you will have to trim the bodywork slightly to clear and your top speed will rise but acceleration will be slower. They handle best on 10 inch though.
You already checked the trans fluid. The trans is in the oil pan, uses the same oil as the engine. Switch to electronic ignition and get rid of the points and it will run in all seasons. Maybe a front disc brake conversion if you are going to change the wheel size. Do 12's not 13's they don't look right on early minis. Ditch the fibreglass front and get original panels. I'd bet even you would fit in it. I'm 6'5“ and I fit in them easy. Looking forward to this one dave!
Love minis they are one of the best cars ever made. Good purchase, need a set of hi-lo adjustable cones gaz shocks and bolt on arches. Stick polycarbonate windows in it keep it light and that will fly down the road.
They are a fantastic car to drive.....like a go-cart around corners. If it is a race engine, you are a lucky dude they can be lightning fast with just a little work.
Many yrs ago my mate purchased a works 1275 genuine cooper rally car , we had so much fun with that car , it had the rubber suspension, straight cut gears in the box , twin fuel tanks that is supposededly the genuine sign of a full cooper , twin batteries , full roll cage, super quick we car. That one seems to have a fibreglass front ?
Great little car will be great to see it back on the road just to let you know you will have to run the 12 inch wheels with calipers on the front 10 inch wheels are only any good with drum brakes also the transmission is lubricated with the engine oil so if the engine oil is ok then the transmission will be as well
my first car was a 1971 Mini 1000 it was unreliable from new, it didn't like rain, cold or hot weather and my second car was a second hand 1978 Mini 1000, the second one was more reliable, although it didn't like standing in traffic jams it tended to overheat then.
My Grandfather always had a mini. He would squeeze in behind the steering wheel and off he would go. Years later I went to buy one but couldn’t fit. Probably should have bought it anyways.
The mini has such a massive following it’s crazy plus being a Brit I know good solid car like that is a diamond in the rough and getting harder and harder to find
Just had a thought, they make kits to mount Honda B16 in these things, given you abilities you could look at these kits and make your own kit or, you could buy a ready made kit 200 horsepower in a car this light could have a power to wieght ratio out of this world. Keeping it bone stock could be cool as well but I owned one of these and they can barely keep up with traffic in the slow lane on the freeway. A turboed B16 could fly!
looks like a standard 998cc engine to me. If you're really interested in sorting this mini out, try to get your hands on one of David Vizard's Books on 'Tuning the A Series Engine' ...The Mini was my dad's first car, and also mine! ...I still own it!
I grew up with guys racing this you . Doing 11 sec on the drag strip . Using single webber 40s . It is great car and as some value to it . I would recommend that you look at some video from UK on what they are doing over there . Ok and 13 would be be
Cool little project. It's been de seamed too. There's lots of places in the uk for bits. British motor heritage are a good bet. Might be even worth having the vin checked? You might have a rare/famous car there?
Hi there I've had 5 mini in my life time I love every one of them you have a great project there and leave the 10 inch Wells or you put bigger on it loose top end speed best of luck
Dave great find man if you check out the goodwood revival videos on you tube you will see how to rebuild the mini in proper order these things race V8 galaxy and falcons man the John cooper works mini team is legendary
Looks like an 850 possible 998 with it being single SU im from uk so I seen a fair share and rebuilt one in college looks fairly solid that one compared to UK cars most were rotten by now
Not sure how much cooper is in the engine. It's small bore, so either 850, 997, 998, or 1098. probably 998 (Coopers came in 997 and 998 in small bore). carb is a single 1 1/2" SU, inlet and exhaust manifolds are aftermarket, rockers look to be also. With the brakes, measure the disk diameter, early coopers were 7", you want 7.5" stuff
Looking at Wiki - the "Cooper" was 997cc up to 1964 so that includes yours, after that the "1 litre" was 998cc and of course the 1.275 "Cooper S". The original mini had from drums but the 997 Cooper moved to discs that were so small you might have been better off with the drums. The constraint is the 10 inch wheels but the 998 Cooper was a bit better. For decent discs you will need the 12" wheels or, these days, maybe 13" with lower profile rubber. Also - I recall Coopers having twin SU carbs - are you sure it really is a Cooper ?
@1:33 im basically holding on my screen and yelling NOOOOO!!! DONT JACK THE MINI ON THE BODY! Always jack them on the front or rear subframes, looks kinda tidy rust wise
if the guy is saying "built racing engine" and those rockers are the cintered rockers , id call BS any Mini engine builder would go the 1.5 roller rockers or the standard 1.3 pressed steel type, those rockers you have are prone to failure with double valve springs, which you dont have :/
OH and i just realised, you are on kumho power stars, GET RID OF THEM, they are extremely dangerous they go out of round and blow out really badly, get yourself some yokohama a008
You are the man saving an old British Classic 🇬🇧
i feel honoured that a great mechanic is restoring a british classic
Mom's reactions to new projects is always priceless. Looking forward to this build but mostly to seeing you fit into this car : )
Even if I can't drive it, its a good one to add to the collection
@@Junkyard_Dave Center the steering column. Position a seat, roll bar, etc. Get in and hang on lol.
@@Junkyard_Dave I think you should fix it up for your mom, I think she would love it!
Gearbox actually uses the engine oil if memory serves me correctly, my first car was a mini clubman ( the car was a 1974 model)
You’ve got to paint that British racing green😏
Nice pickup Dave love minis. Just needs some nice wheels, a junkyard dave paint job, some glass , and a update interior! Im here for it!
Enjoying this new series on the mini looks like a fun project and always nice to save a life
im happy to see you building this! everyone loves to build new cars, i want to see some retro builds
Bad obsession Motorsports project binky. One of my favorite builds on UA-cam. You should check them out. See if you can build something similar. Only cause it bad a$$. But whatever you do cool car I enjoy the look of a mini
So jealous! Can't wait to see the progress on this, cheers.

Great content Dave. These are legendary in NZ. 👍👍
Omg been looking for a mini for so long lucky find hope you do a full restoration
Following this closely, I have 2 mini's of my own. Restored the one, and busy with the second.
And matching rubber gloves too!
Nice project and thumbs up for this episode. Thanks for sharing this experience.
Radiator, rocker cover and rockers arms not stock. Some people used to put bigger wheels on, but i believe it looks better on 10 inch. Good luck.
Finally somebody doing a real project on utube go at it Dave make it as original as possible
Definitely starting to be my favorite channel to watch. I have always wanted an old mini so when I watched this video let's say I got excited lol
Seems to be in much better shape than my 66’. Way to go. 👌
SO LUCKY to find a MGA starter at the yard! That’s awesome.

For how small these are they have a ton of room. I bought a early 70’s one with me when I moved to the US a few years back. They’re a run little car
mini cooper lot of fun to drive
Fantastic. You can never go wrong with a Austin/Morris Mini
Might fit in the back of the Hellwagon to take it to the track??? Can't wait to see this one done and to see Dave try to get into it!!
Like the green, matches the 🧤 gloves
Wow old 63 engine running!Nice sounded engine
Nice mini project 👍
hi dave like the British Classic Mini Cooper look great car
Nice. Also it's a right hand drive version.
Check the core plugs, they are designed to push out when the engine freezes.
The color on that thing is awesome. Bet it was a little green monster when it was running
Cool mini!! Love the volvo wagons

My firs first car back in the 70s i had a wrecked early model cooper which i rebuilt and put back on the road
Sounds really good 👍

Runs awesome!
Cool project!!!
Nice find Dave. Engine sounds great!
This will be so cool to build
I'm in the UK and I love it 😎
This Mini Cooper will look sweet when it's all done.
Dying to see you in that thing. 😀
Mr. Bean can show you some driving skills if you need it. Very versatile car. Can be driven from both the inside and the outside.
Hellcat swap it. "The Mini Bad Obsession won't build". Love it.

A man with a lot of projects 👍👊
Opposite end of the calendar to the Charger project!!! A companion for the FC.
Cool little project. It's been de seamed too. There's lots of places in the uk for bits. British motor heritage are a good bet. Might be even worth having the vin checked? You might have a rare/famous car there?
Yes, british classic, new subscriber here😀🇳🇴
can tell its old one from the outta door hinges, nice! got be worth putting a charger engine init lol
Dave / Nigel from England . Old mk 1 minis are worth alot off money these days .You need to turn it into a rally spec car.
Junkyard dddddd BEAN. lol cool vid man
This video was awesome, can't wait to see more of this thing
Can get twin cam head and 5 speed boxes for them from KAD & Jack Knight Iirc?
Dave, Mighty Car Mods has a Honda powered mini that flies!
Dave I am genuinely interested to see if you can actually fit in this as I'm not overly tall but a bit wide and have problems fitting in mine
This is gonna be a good one!!! 👍🏾
Hi there I've had 5 mini in my life time I love every one of them you have a great project there and leave the 10 inch Wells or you put bigger on it loose top end speed best of luck
Lemons race car! It's perfect!
Hi not sure how far you want to go with the Mini but you can get all the parts you need out of Britain.
Cheers
MR. Bean :)
Just need a comfy chair on top...
haha cute, i love it! it will be a awesome build
I would love to own that 63. When you get done playing with it, holler back.
12:08 SHE'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!!! 💪🤙
Dave great find man if you check out the goodwood revival videos on you tube you will see how to rebuild the mini in proper order these things race V8 galaxy and falcons man the John cooper works mini team is legendary

very cool. Do a 16 valve cylinder head conversion on it

Shame someone has de-seamed it. That will be a pain to put back to original.
Good project though! Love seeing a mini on the other side of the pond!
Yes!!! Very cool
Great find Dave ... :)
