  • Yesterday I jumped into the our little 2 horse Honda outboard motor. I tore it all apart and started cleaning up pieces.
Many people don't realize I used to be an auto mechanic, so I know how to do a lot of things.
I'm going to go through this motor and get it refreshed replacing warn and broken parts as I think it needs, so that it become reliable motor.
All of the fluids were very dark and black. And emptying the motor is not easy getting that like 1/3 cup of oil out but it's out... I did go and add some oil to it while I cranked it over and then I drained it again.
The lower end, I pulled both caps out and black goo came out. I did spray in there with some carb cleaner cuz I knew it would evaporate quickly. ..and a lot of junk came out. I gave it a few shots of 30 weight from my oil-can and more black junk came out.
I did go through the carburetor and unscrew that little pointed valve. Cleaned off carbin and blew out all the passageways. Everything is cleaned up and varnish free!
I will get that spark plug gap and installed after I check the compression on the cylinder. I want to check the valves and piston rings to see how tight they are.
The new motor cover is perfect, just $61. I scrubbed it out and got all the oil inside cleaned off. It will keep the motor protected and all the moving parts away from fingers.
I did spray carb cleaner through the fuel tank and I got a lot of tea colored varnish that came out. So I did it 2 more times until the fluid ran clear. And that looks amazing inside right now!
The bolt system for the throttle cable was rusted write-off they had dissimilar metals next to stainless. So of course using the wrong connector will cause failure.
I do need to drill that out and put a bolt through it. And I will add Lanocote to prevent that electrolysis going forward.
I did go over the actual prop with a file and knock down some high spots where they had ran into objects. The pretty much just smooth everything down and put a nice sharp edge on the surfaces.
This should help the water to flow smoothly and not cause so much disruption as the blade passes through the water columns. I will probably hit it with a little sandpaper to smooth it out more before I'm done.
Time to add some motor oil and some gear oil to it as well as a fresh fuel tank. At that point she'll be ready with a barrel of water to start up.
I am going to pressure wash the motor and get all the cracks and crevices clean. I'm also going to pressure wash the inside and outside of the porta-bote so it is thoroughly clean as well.
Then I'll fire up a barrel of water and see if the motor runs. That'll be a fun video to enjoy.
    Thanks for watching!

We picked up an almost pristine like-new 2.3hp for $300 a few months ago. It's a great little tender motor for our porta bote. The Honda is much nicer and cleaner than the older 2-strokes we had been using.
Your carb looks way better than ours does on the outside. About the only rust on the entire outboard was on the outside of the float bowl and a couple of the fasteners holding down the recoil starter and the fuel tank. The spark plug looked almost brand new and there was no sign of any carbon build up anywhere inside. There were so few hours on it I was concerned it hadn't even gone past its break-in period. It has now and I am seriously impressed by how it sips gas compared to a 2-stroke.
It sucks that you had to pay $60 for just a cowl and not even one in that great of.cosmetic condition. We got a better deal on our motor because it was gummed up inside and I had to clean the entire fuel system to get it to even start or run at all.
Incidentally I am also a lyme survivor who was not diagnosed until a late stage and it took years to get it fully cleared from my system. Even so, my health has never been the same nearly 20 years later. Doctors suck. I was complaining of symptoms for a year or more when I finally broke out everywhere in the rashes and the doc had to admit I had it after finally being tested which they wouldn't do up until that point. They kept saying I couldn't have lyme if I never had the bullseye...
