This movie gets better every time I watch it. Anne Hathaway absolutely steals the show as Selina. I think you missed her reaction when Bane refers to Batman as "Mr. Wayne," but that's why she stays to watch the fight and looks increasingly concerned as it gets worse and worse.
The scene where Blake catches Selina at the airport and asks her "Did they kill him?" and her response, a despondent "I'm not sure" is one of my favorites. It shows how much she cares about Bruce and regrets betraying him.
Hope you're having a happy birthday, Mari!

17:20 From your tone, I wonder if you've forgotten the backstory for those pearls. He said those were his mother's pearls. If you remember, when his parents were killed (as Bruce watched), his mother was wearing a pearl necklace that got broken, strewing the individual pearls across the alleyway. In all of Batman lore, that string of pearls is almost certainly the object that has the most sentimental value for him.

@@bigdream_dreambig I thought the same .... and also told myself that just because Bruce took them for her does not mean that should would HAVE to be wearing them. That there would be a reason to include the scene about the missing pearls in the manifest and that was enough for me.
BUT... then I was lucky enough to watch the film (very very recently...in fact after watching this reaction video) in very high def.
She is actually wearing the string of pearls in the scene and at the exact time that you posted. Its just that they are riding very high on her neck, about an inch lower than her hair line and her skin is very pale so the pearls blend in really well.
Watch it at high def..... its a real treat for people who noticed the pearl references.
There is debate about whether this scene is real or if it is Alfred daydreaming but I think its real.
I know the director likes to leave things open often so that the viewer gets to decide for themselves however the pearls and the software for autopilot being patched and the easy confusion between whether Batman tells Catwoman either "No autopilot" or "No, autopilot" puts me over the edge to believing that Bruce really lived and disappeared with Selina to live a free life finally. I think there are just so many hints leading us in that direction.

For Anyone Who May See This And Somehow Still Doesn't Get It: Bruce Wayne is fully retired and living abroad, the ending does not imply that he ever means to return to Gotham or have anything to do with Batman. Commissioner Gordon finds a repaired Bat signal, which tells him that he can still rely on *Batman*, so John Blake does not become Robin or Nightwing as so many people mistakenly thought. John Blake becomes Batman. Nolan is not subtle here. He has Blake step onto a platform in the Batcave, the platform begins to RISE into frame (a recurring theme) and the screen cuts to black with the title card: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. At the end of the film, John Blake IS the Dark Knight rising. John Blake is Batman.
One thing I have found is that only comic reading fanboys tend to interpret the ending as John Blake continuing on as Nightwing or something, which doesn't make sense at all because Nightwing is a different character and the "Robin" namedrop is by Nolan's own admission, merely a wink at fans. People who don't really read comics tend to read the scene as Nolan intended. We'll likely never see a John Blake Batman movie, but Nolan intended you to imagine that this world continues on with John Blake taking up the mantle. So a lot of the villains who don't appear in this trilogy? Riddler, Penguin, etc, are probably characters who John Blake will encounter (even Ledger's Joker is presumably still alive). That's the fun part about this simultaneously close-ended/open-ended conclusion. You get to imagine.

    To clarify some of your confusion about Robin, in the comics it's more like a military rank than an actual character;
Like a private or lieutenant ranks under a general, a "Robin" is essentially a replacement "Batman" in training. So in the comics, there's been more than one over the years:
The first "Robin" *(Dick Grayson)* eventually reached the same rank as Bruce, but instead chose to become superhero of a different city *(Nightwing)*
The next "Robin" *(Jason Todd)* was killed in action by the Joker, but then resurrected by Ra's Al Ghul as a villain/antihero *(The Red Hood)*
The next "Robin" *(Tim Drake)* -- depending on the timeline -- either became so discouraged he quit crime fighting or -- in one reality -- actually BECAME Batman's nemesis *(Joker)*
The current "Robin" *(Damian Wayne)* is not only the son of Bruce, but actually goes on to REPLACE HIM as the Dark Knight *(Batman)*
The final "Robin" *(Carrie Kelley)* is trained in the "future" Gotham, where Batman comes out of retirement as an 80 year old man in a dystopian society

Mary, you have such great reactions. I feel your emotion as the story is told. The great risk you felt as Bruce climbs out of the hole, the sweating hands you experienced. I used to rock climb, and I know exactly that feeling. If your hands sweat, your grip will not hold, so a climber learns not only the physical skill to make the move, but the mental skill to control the fear so that the hands do not sweat as you make the crux move. And, I have fallen precisely because of that moment of fear. Then try again, and again, until finally the fear is controlled and you can make the move with a just barely there cling hold on the rock surface. Not something most people experience, and to do it completely free climbing is next level stuff. It’s bad enough taking a 20 foot roped fall, any more than that is likely a bad injury or your last mistake.

This is such a fantastic trilogy, and one of the reasons that I love this movie in particular is that presents Bruce Wayne doing something that he’s never done in comics: he moves on from being Batman. Sure it leaves all arranged so there’s always a Batman in Gotham, but for him, it’s time to move on, he’s done everything that he could, gave everything for his cause, and now, he can live.

I really liked this movie when it came out and it has gotten even better with time. The plane scene is such a great opener for a movie (even with Aiden Gillen's cringey performance).
I was very skeptical of Anne Hathaway being cast until the scene in the bar when she pulls the 180 going from completely in control to screaming hysterically to fool the swat team. She crushed it.
Honestly, the movie is great other than a couple plot holes that are easy to overlook and Marion Cotillard's absolutely ridiculous death scene. The Robin twist, the Gordon reveal, the cafe scene for Alfred. So good.

The Alfred/Bruce relationship/scenes, the teacher on the bridge with his kids, Bruce rising through the prison, the Gordon and Bruce moment near the end, and of course Bane (who is a great villain, he's terrifying and brutal, which leads to a great way to develop Bruce's character, which, by the way was great character development, still, the Joker is better it goes without saying, but Bane is a pretty good 2nd place I think). The Dark Knight is still better to me (I could go on about the greatness of that movie but I won't haha) but the Dark Knight Rises is a pretty good follow up I thought with its connections to Batman Begins and the aforementioned things.

The Dark Knight might have been one of my favorite movies of all time. But this movie (The Dark Knight Rises) was great in its own right. It was a fitting end to a magnificent trilogy. With most films there is a beginning, middle, and an end... where there is a fall in tempo after the climax of the film. I agree with you that this movie does not seem to follow those rules. The story definitely takes off from the climax... and continues to push forward through to the very end. It's also a testament to Nolan's character as a film maker. The audience placed complete trust in his vision for the story arc. And they are rewarded... completely... for that trust. The end of The Dark Knight Rises is beautiful. It brings us full circle... with Alfred sitting at the table... enjoying his libation... casually nodding to Bruce... and Bruce nodding back.
Have you watched the movie "Logan" yet? The conclusion to the Wolverine/Hugh Jackman line of movies? If not... I think you would really enjoy it. The movie is nothing like your traditional super hero movie. Don't get me wrong... it's a great super hero movie. But it would also be great if the main character was... Nick Nobody... or just Jeremy... it blends elements of old westerns with the super hero genre. If you haven't watched it... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give it a try.

1:13 - In addition to Heath Ledger in THE DARK KNIGHT, and Joaquin Phoenix in JOKER, the major Jokers are probably Cesar Romero (1966), Jack Nicholson (1989), Jared Leto (2016, 2021), and Cameron Monaghan (2014-2019); plus Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) has done what many consider the definitive Joker voice for BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and its various spinoffs.

There have been many different Jokers over the years, both in the comics, on TV and in the movies. For instance, it would be wrong to compare Cesar Romero's Joker from the 1960's TV show with Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight, both were great in their own way. I also like Nicholson's Joker, who is somewhere in between the two.

Happy Birthday Mary, and this is my favorite of the trilogy. Anne Hathaway is my favorite Catwoman. I'm hoping to see if Zoe's gonna take the crown.

Terrific film. I know a lot of people weren’t crazy about the character of Blake but I see it as Bale and Nolan ensuring that this is not part of a larger universe. The Dark Knight franchise stands alone as the definitive beginning, middle, and ending of Bruce’s journey as Batman. Good stuff.

Happy birthday Mary!! Hope you enjoyed the Dark Knight trilogy!! :)
One of my favorite lines from the film from Bane and Dagget:
Dagget: "I paid you a small fortune.."
Bane: "and this gives you power over me?"
people think money can buy them anything, even people's lives...until you come up against someone like Bane or the Joker.
Speaking of the Joker! His line about people eating each other, when he was talking to Bruce in the interrogation room..it came true didn't it? The Joker knew what he was talking about when it came to people.
Also loved the very ending of Blake finding the cave. The creatures circling him look more red tinted than what a Bat would be. Maybe fulfilling him becoming Robin (who wears red of course)

Easily my second favorite version of Bane (Arkham origins is the first). If you ever want to introduce gaming onto this channel I would highly recommend the Batman Arkham games. The first 3 have such good lore

    Great stuff, as always!
The Joker is its own standalone movie, so you don't need to have any extra knowledge to watch it. But be prepared for a very different kind of movie. It has no interest in looking like or feeling like a superhero movie. It's a psychological drama, where the main character happens to call himself Joker at some point. That said, it's a fantastic film, and the lead actor won the Oscar for his performance.
I'd love to see that one on your channel.

Yes, he does have a sidekick named Robin - real name Dick Grayson...
If you're planning on watching the DC animated movies including Batman: Under The Red Hood, don't read any further. Contains spoilers. But if you don't care, a brief summary.

Then Jason Todd took over when Dick graduated to Nightwing but fans hated him so they killed him off. But the way he was killed off, fans begged for his return and he came back (thanks to Ras Al Gul and his Lazerus pit) as The Red Hood.
After which came Tim Drake and then Damian Wayne. Stephanie Cane played a female Robin for a short time.

I love how earnest (some might say cheesy) that Christopher Nolan can be with his stories. In a epic move about super heroes and villains he still takes the time to highlight simple acts of heroism / love. Gordan being called a hero for taking the time to comfort a young Bruce is not a hugely dramatic act of heroism, but it is the kind of love that we can spread that makes this world a better place.
    Happy birthday!!!!

I'll always wonder if Heath Ledger's Joker was meant to make an appearance in this movie? And how he would have interacted with Bane if he had? Happy Birthday Mari!

It would have been that Joker and Bane actually would have gone to war for Gotham, and the final battle would have been a three way battle instead. Not to mention it would have been Joker that rescued Batman instead of Catwoman and Joker would have been the one to kill Bane.

In this film, the name "Robin" is more symbolic. Bruce realized that Blake possessed the right traits to become his successor. So the end is showing Bruce retiring and Blake rising up to become the new Batman.
