I never really heard of this film when it was in theaters, but the first thing I heard about it when I did finally hear about it after the Blu-ray was out, was that the dog dies and that fuels the revenge plot. This many years later, it feels like as many people know the dog dies in John Wick 1 as know that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father. But I guess this isn't Mary's usual genre and some people still don't know going in.

Regarding the second movie. The actor that plays the villain in this one dies, so he doesn't come back in the sequal. They do however got the next best thing to play another russian criminal, ofc another swedish actor :)

You mentioned the lighting. There was a pattern to it, particularly in the club and the hotel bar. Blue was John's color where he was in control. Red was for enemies or where they were in control. Purple was where the issue was in doubt. Green was a neutral or helpful. Gold was an ally.

The reason John looks so realistic and so cool in the fights (aside from the fact that it was done by a masterful stunt team, using real world tactical team techniques and Keanu basically went through months of real training) is that John is extremely efficient. No wasted movement, no style points, he kills as quickly as possible and moves on. One exception is when he didn't kill Josef in the bath. He wanted to terrify the little shit, which is why he killed a man while looking *him* in the eye.
The Cinematography when this film came out was a revelation. It lets all that training Keanu and the stunt team went through breathe. The failing of basically an entire generation of US action films after the second Bourne movie (have you watched that? The Bourne series is worth your time, kind of Wick before Wick) was the quick cut editing style which was used to disguise lesser fight choreography in the edit. It was an infection that polluted the industry for a decade. John Wick gives you a wider camera angle and basically lets you *see* the action. Even The Dark Knight Trilogy as excellent as it is, suffers from this problem.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 2 роки тому +3

Center Axis Relock is the name of the gun fighting style he uses. Well, kinda. It's a bit niche, but has its proponents, and it seems ideally suited to the sort of close quarters gunplay John Wick engages in in this movie. John Wick certainly has popularized it, even if it takes some liberties in the film. It's all about fighting with a gun when you don't have a lot of space. Add in the realistic reloads, and the film really elevates realistic firearm use to a level never really seen before in other action movies. Stylistically, it is *choice*.

    • @connie77

It's a romance film. It's also about a man and his dog. There's some violence but it's not gratuitous. It makes sense in the story, very organic the way everything works out, with a logical progression of events in a grounded, realistic story.

The guy who plays Viggo, Michael Nyqvist, doesn't get enough credit for his performance in this movie. He does such a good job of selling John's reputation as the ultimate badass because his reaction is perfect; his gradual slide into a villainous breakdown is exactly what you would expect from a character in his circumstances. He also does a really good job of delivering the lore behind John in a convincing way that actually makes it seem like he's not just trying to lay plot points out for the audience.

My only suggestion is that what ever you choose as a background, it reflects your personality and interests, with of course you and your cat's comfort in mind. As for future picks, I find the more complex and emotional plot movie reactions best.

Even though I'm listening to the reaction in headphones Mari's reaction going "ooooh ohhh ooooohhh" to people dying in the club, the other person in the room thought it was a puppy crying.

I think the scene with the 2m tall bodybuilder bouncer on the club was the best scene!!!
"Are you here on business sir?"
"I'm afraid so.... Why don't you take the night off?"
takes off the earpiece "Thank you sir"...
Like... thank you for sparing my life, sir... I will gladly get off your way and let you do your thing... I'll just sit down right over here somewhere and be happy you let me live...
    PRICELESS!!!

John didn't kill him because he wanted Yosef to feel the fear for awhile...it builds his reputation of fearing the boogeyman, and to savor the hunt.
Because John was actually hunted on The Continentals grounds, they gave him a car as a grievance.
Fun facts: the doctor that stitched him up was the Keymaker in the 2nd Matrix movie.
The bodyguard that threw John over the club's second floor was the main antagonist upgraded Agent in the 2nd movie, as well.
Keanu likes reworking with people he's worked with from the Matrix universe.

John's car at the start, is a 69 mustang fastback, Cobra edition, the continental boss gifts him a fresh Cobra edition, like a 2015 i think

The new setup looks so much more comfortable!
Yea, this movie is quite something. It helps when the director is a stunt man. They know how to do action and how to shoot it so it looks good on screen. It also helps if the actors put in the work and do their own stunts. This is very reminiscent of the old Jackie Chan movies.
This came out in a time when most action scenes had ~10 cuts per second, you got disoriented watching because each individual camera shot didn't stay long enough so the viewer could orient themselves. In addition the camera would shake violently and just make you sick. This was of course all done to hide that it's stunt doubles with occasional close ups of the actor's faces injected, or to hide that the actors are just flailing around or to hide that it's mostly CGI. It simulates excitement by using very fast camera movements and quick editing. Everybody was fed up with it.
Here we have the complete opposite. Long takes, wide camera angles, you can actually see what's happening. That's really Keanu driving a car towards the camera, drifting and stopping perfectly in frame and in focus. Why? Because he worked hard to learn how to do that. So you can just set up a camera and have a fight choreography. And it looks awesome, it looks real, because it is. The audience knows. This is a masterclass in how to do action. In addition the world building is pretty well executed. It doesn't get bogged down with exposition and explanations, it just implies and hints at a deeper backstory to these places like the Continental hotel. What are these gold coins? uh, err … idunno.
Sure, the story is paper thin, there really is not much depth there and I found the action did get a little repetitive at times. But in a way this movie (and I probably Mad Max: Fury Road which came out around the same time) paved the way for well done action. The success of these movies told Hollywood quite clearly, that audiences actually want to see the action. It came out of nowhere, was a surprise hit and made waves.
