jhendrixfanatic2 Pretty accurate description of Shoestring too which makes it even funnier. I hope he gives this song a listen or has heard it before. I feel bad that he can hardly hear though. He’ll need some strong pair of beats when listening to this beat. 🎼
Shoestring my heart is broken tonight after getting home from work truck driving and getting the news. This song will be my solace when thinking of you.
I'm so pleased UA-cam decided to put this play list together. Shoestring would really enjoy it. Miss you my friend even though I never got to meet you in person.
I went to iTunes and discovered the only version of this song is a live version. I bought it anyhow as this song will forever remind me of Mark Nichols. RIP my fellow veteran.
Rest in peace Shoe String Massey and Hobo Shoestring. The former passed on a year before the latter started riding the rails. Now they're both in heaven. Might be riding the rails together up there.
Mid 80’s my uncle had an old garage right by the train tracks. Him and my grandpa were always working on something. I hung out with them as much as I could. Seems like this song was always playing on the radio back then. This sure brings back some good memories of my childhood. Thanks for sharing!
I'm also here because of Hobo Shoestring. I just heard of Shoestring yesterday because my UA-cam feed showed a video about Shoestring going missing from his apartment in Johnson City, TN about a week & 1/2 ago. Every door was locked up except the back sliding door. His pack, medications, and hat were all still in the apartment. There is a Silver Alert issued and the latest update was about 1 1/2 or so hours ago. He had been at the hospital with some disorientation and a neighbor's ring doorbell showed him going in to his apartment.
I personally knew Shoestring Massey of Bruceton, Tennessee. The Song was written about him. He had been to our house numerous times an ate with us. My dad carried him around the county as he needed to go somewhere. I have been fishing with him at the Big Sandy. I also knew Samuel Hogin (deceased) who wrote the song as he was a hometown person who grew up knowing Shoestring too. I'll post the song next. The first time I heard the song, I was attending "Nashville Now" TV show hosted by Ralph Emery and Mel McDaniel was the guest. When he sang the song I told myself, "that must be the Shoestring I grew up with"...
In memory of Jim Stobie...your videos changed my life. Love you and miss you Brother. If you don't know of him, look him up. @HobeStobe #HobeStobe on UA-cam @StobeTheHobo #StobeTheHobo
I heard this song on the radio when I was in grade school growing up during the 80s. I never forgot it. Think I only heard it once or twice-it wasn't as big a hit as Babys Got Her Blue Jeans On, which I heard on my parents radio quite a bit-but I never, ever could forget those lyrics about gettin' picked on...thanx for posting
slakinsam it’s not about getting picked on. This guy shoestring is a lazy person who doesn’t work, and isn’t responsible at all. No one wants a bum around them 24/7
@@johnathanself95 When I had a job at a heat treating plant about 20+ years ago a fellow had one of those cartoons from a magazine - Penthouse, I believe - taped on his locker. It was of a country music DJ with a big cowboy hat and a cigarette in his mouth saying through the mic "This next songs called Suck My Cheesy Dick Ya Cheatin' Ass Slut."
Listening to this song will be a cherished memory for me...RIP Mark Nichols. Always hoped he'd of wound up in Alaska instead of an old folks home eating prunes...
Sam Weaver, when he was MD of US99, Chicago, added this song to the playlist. Mel hit #22 in Billboard, 3-29-86. God bless you, Jack, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed rest of the week! RIP, Mel.
I'm not a country music fan, but my mom is. I remember this song because of the line, "Shoestring, you got your hat on back'erds" and I used to mock it a lot. I was a teenager when the song came out. For some reason lately, whenever I hear, think or say the word "backwards," I think about this song. Again, because of "you got your hat on back'erds."
I'm 69 in a couple weeks Mel's been a fab off mine since I can remember that is what I call country music he belongs up there with the rest go Mel go rock a Billy boy

Take a listen to the mighty train wrecks. They wrote a song about Mark 'shoestring' Nichols.
