Postage Stamps of Foreign Offices in the Ottoman Empire [Ep. 111]

- In the 19th century, European nations conducting trade and commerce within the Ottoman Empire set up their own post offices to handle their official mail, because of the unreliable Ottoman postal service. In this video I give a brief historical overview of these foreign post offices and look at the postage stamps issued by 7 of these countries.

Great to hear that your eye has recovered, and that you finally got your visa. Portugal is a fantastic little country, a lot of hospitality over there. Some decades ago, we have been invited for a private B & B in Porto (Northern Portugal), and it was for free ! 👌You will find that kind of behaviour very rarely in Central or Northern Europe. The main reason for establishing foreign post offices was the lack of reliability of the Ottoman postal service. Keep it up, and have a pleasant trip ! ✈Greets from GER, U.
We've been to Porto. A great city. Yes, the Ottoman postal service was still rather primitive, which just gave these colonial powers a great excuse to establish themselves there.

Anyway, great to see you've had the eye op and minor side effects aside, hopefully things will only get better - like I said, my Mom has had an op and being in her 80s and suffering with dementia, it's a struggle for her.
Also glad to hear you've got the visa for Portugal - finally!🎉🎉🎉 - Let us know how it's getting on there.. It would have been great if we could have met up but hopefully there will be plenty of opportunities to hop over to Ole Blighty - we have the Stampex annually here I think around October and that would be a good time perhaps.
Ok onto the subject - POs in the Ottoman Empire. So this is an awesome episode Ted! Thanks for doing all the research because it was really helpful and interesting because it gives me direction on how to expand on my quest to philatelise the Ottoman Empire. It was really intriguing because of the political spin you included - the 19th century was when the empire went into decline because of being a victim of its own success, since the more real estate you own, the harder it is to maintain it. There are also conspiracy theories about the Freemasons who wanted to dismantle the empire and that sort of ties up with what you mentioned about other nations wanting to be in on it and use of POs as staging posts for perhaps espionage etc.
All in all, an excellent episode and definitely one i'll be replaying as a reference guide - Thanks Buddy! 😊👍

Really a great video. The deeper you get into examining European stamps from the 19th century, the more that you see how post offices were used abroad. French stamps that have a large numeral cancel lozange cancel with a four digit number beginning with 5 are all foreign post office cancels. The British had post offices all over the world and with a cancellation guide, you can pick them out from other British stamps cancelled domestically. Again, thanks!

Great video! The oddest of all is the Romanian situation. Essentially Romania had ships running all through the end of the 19th century from Constantinople to Constanta. However, there were two issues of stamps: one issued and valid for a few months in 1896 and one (the one shown by you) issued in 1919, and also valid just a few days. The idea being that either time the local authorities did not agree with the Romanian Consulate (in whose precinct the office ran) using special stamps for the Constantinople service. Non-stamp service was allowed however throughout and even served some of the other foreign post offices (e.g. Austrian) who paid the Romanian post to transfer their correspondence in bulk via ship to Constanta, then by railway all the way to the Austrian border.

For years, I always enjoy your video "lessons" which broadens my philatelic knowledge. I'm just a bit confused. Did I miss why/when you left Germany? Anyway Portugal sounds nice. Be well and keep them coming!
In episode 98, I talked about the difficulties we were experiencing in Germany, and that we had a backup plan, if Germany didn't work out. I guess I didn't talk about Portugal in subsequent videos because we didn't know how well that would work out for us either. I didn't want to be continuously making videos where I say, "This is happening," followed up with, "This isn't happening after all." But, this is now a cetainty.
My error, I did watch that episode as well as all of them of course. I lived in Germany for 15 months thanks to the US Army. On another subject, my father's parents came from Austria Hungary (now Slovakia) in 1901. What stamps would I look at for that period? Thanks Ted.@@tedtalksstamps
@@jeffreymasarek7694 the Hungarian Post became independant of Austria Post in 1867. And in 1871, Hungary began producing its own stamps. For your purposes of finding Slovakian postal history, look for used copies of Hunary with cancels showing Slovakian cities -- Bratislava, Zilina, and others. You can also search for stampless letters or covers using those city names in your search.
