The passions of stamp collectors

  • Though stamp collecting isn't as popular as it once was, some rare stamps are worth millions, and the stories behind rare specimens (such as the "Inverted Jenny") read like the stuff of mystery novels. Rita Braver looks into the fascinating stories behind some of the world's rarest stamps, and the sometimes equally exotic group of people who collect them.

As a retired commercial printer I will say that they surely printed MORE THAN ONE sheet with the Jenny up-side down… but they only let ONE get through their quality control system that culled out the rest. :0) I've been responsible for more than one printing error during my long (and great) career, but all I got was grief and spoilage reprints! :0)

Interesting that you mentioned of possibility of more than one sheet (pane) was printed error, but quality control prevented from public sales. I too feel the same with this theory. The current pane of 100 Inverted, appeared to have been the Lower Left pane from a sheet of 400. It is this "sheet" that was fed upside down to result the Inverted Jenny's. Then the sheet was cut into quarters to result 4-panes of 100. Subsequently only one (1) pane survived. So I think there was at least 300 more Inverted Jenny's existed at one time, and unfortunately for the stamp collectors in the world, those 300 rare stamps (or 3 other panes) never left the print shop due to quality control.

$41,000.... I didn't know they printed 100 Jenny sheets, I really liked that $2 stamp!! I'm surprised this doesn't have more views, cool stuff :)

The number of views depends largely on the wording of the title. If the word Jenny was in the title, this would have had 10x more views.

2:55 "Philatelists" and "stamp collectors" are NOT the same thing. A philatelist is someone who STUDIES stamps. They don't necessarily HAVE to be a collector as well (but in 99.999% of cases they usually are).

I’m trying to be a philatelist. I look up the history of every stamp I own and write down notes about it including Scott number and year released.

There it goes wrong.. 03:42 the older generation collected stamps because of the history of the country, modern Philatelsts do it different, they collect topics. the more the better. But the old generation keeps pushing that it has to do with history we should collect the old ones. And the older generation has the power and the network to achiev their goal but old stamps go down in price rapidly, only in 2017 prices here felt 50% again, for common collections. We want modern philatey not history of a country, its over. I collect my own stamps now, designed by me, more rare than the Jenny.
That the man found the new Jenny sheet is no coincedence, he was the biggest buyer of these sheets so us postal gave him that sheet as a surprise. its fake, fake news remember?
But its funny to see how the older generation thought about collecting! Modern Philately is completely different.
What would you prefer? a stamp with an old guy on it or one with you on it? Its possible nowadays! Personal stamps! Haha King Me! Or my car, or house, or favotite meal, or favorit spiders.
