  • From Episode 532, Pastor Mike Erre gives his thoughts about how Jesus would fight the culture war.
"Somehow we have gotten it in our heads that the agenda of Jesus is more important than manifesting the fruit of Jesus' spirit. We think it's perfectly acceptable to cease acting Christian in order to accomplish Christian goals."

Well said sir. Culture war has no place in the church. We testify with our lives, not our hateful words.

What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? - 1 Corinthians 5:12
The church is in a world of hurt on judgement day for not only not doing what Jesus said, but being an active force of evil in the world. Imagine if they put all this energy into serving the poor.

Beautiful post to pass on. Everyone should view the two 2023 Easter weekend messages from Trump and Biden. Extremely opposite posts. Pray that Trump would surrender his heart to the Lord.

American so-called "evangelicals " would have crucified Christ just the same.

5:45 “The issue ISN’T ‘what do you think about specific policies?’ Or whether or not you’re politically agitating towards some end. The issue is ‘what is the fundamental role of the church in the world?’” This is the crux of the issue..
I go to a Lutheran church (WELS synod) and sure, some of the cultural issues in America are talked about from the pulpit, but ONLY to comfort those in attendance, and bring scripture to bear on peoples’ worries because a lot of fellow Christians are so freaked out about this stuff! Right Wing talking heads (the likes of Ben Shapiro, etc.) do not help at all, and the Democratic Party isn’t exactly flush with brilliant ideas either in similar regards.
This sort of worrying affects people that I love, and THAT I am frustrated with sometimes. Not with them per se.. But this situation is just so silly! I find myself offering insight occasionally; I’m glad that I’m not a pastor.. I’d probably pull my hair out.
Keep doing what you’re doing you guys! Solid work! This is single-handedly the most succinct argument I’ve seen for these ideas yet; wrapped in a neat little bow. I clapped and laughed out loud at least once during this interview.. That means a lot coming from a Lutheran 🙃
Ever considered interviewing Pastor Chris Rosebrough? He’s a Lutheran pastor from my home state! Has a really fun Channel, along similar lines to The Holy Post! Another good one to check out is Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller, particularly this lecture (Small side note, he didn’t want to name his book what he did, but his publisher made a fuss):
    ua-cam.com/video/v56JYNfHOnk/v-deo.html
I’d also like to make an important distinction which you wanted to touch on, Phil: William Wilberforce, along with Martin Luther King Jr. (and the American civil rights movement as a rule of thumb; although not all actors involved were Christians nor blameless) crafted their predominant message to improve the lives of certain people. As opposed to making “others” their enemies.

The problem at the church I used to go to is that they’ve become so brainwashed into seeing things only one way and have lost their objectivity

Its not, I am crucified for the sake of Christ... Isn't it we crucify those who disagree with us, who don't live Iike us, don't look like us, don't have our values so we can triumph and we don't have to consider their fate? Don't we set up policies that favor us over all others that we may lord over them and unilaterally determine how they should live? Then they will have no other choice but to follow our precepts or cease existing to the glory of the actual "g"od we worship. Why should we allow them to choose God? Take away their choice !

Exactly! You dont break some commands in order to obey others right?
The means matter just as much as the ends in a way.
Definitely recommend Bible Project's Way of the Exile video for more on this.

I would love to hear someone speak about the Christian Right's power grab of Jesus' sovereignty as an excuse to mock and abuse the dignity of non-believers, especially those who struggle with non-traditional sexual sin. I consider it a real scandal because the arrogance of the Christian Right has created huge stumbling blocks for people who desperately need to know that they are loved by the God who created them, rather than hated and despised.

A woman being interviewed defined herself as pro-life. She said that anyone who has an abortion, or is involved with the abortion including doctors, nurses and even the receptionist, should be tried, found guilty and then immediately executed. Her definition of pro-life is very different than mine.

LOVE Pastor Erre's & Tim's examination of The Sermon on the Mount!!!
(Voxology Podcast starting in episode 254)
Dallas Willard story as retold by Mike Erre: Professor Willard to student, "I just wanted to let you know that I will be giving you an A on your next paper. So write a paper worthy of the A you are gonna get."
Mike Erre: "Straight out of Ephesians 4"
...live a life worthy of the calling you have already received. (Ephesians 4:1)

Also, in the way of Jesus - did Jesus ever preach repent for the forgiveness of sin ? OR was His message only Come follow Me? OR maybe both?

So something that I've been thinking about over the years is noticing how some politically progressive communities ironically have a similar flaw to some puritanical religious communities. What I mean is that while the value systems may differ, the parallel is how there is a legalistic attitude to what's considered taboo in those communities (i.e. racist jokes being frowned upon in progressive circles and sexual impropriety in religious ones). The sociological result tends to include subconscious projection ("plank eyes" criticizing others for flaws that they themselves are unaware of), dogpiling / disfellowship, and prioritizing one's own pride over the values that we claim to fight for. While I do have a lot to say about how this can lead to hypocrisy in the puritanical religious circles, I sometimes wonder if the relatively less religious progressive communities could realize that they have something to gain by following a model that involves forgiveness and rehabilitation that Jesus talks about.

Forgive me for being frank, but I just typed a very long stand-alone comment in this thread on my phone.
What you are speaking of (and sometimes wonder about) has existed before in the Democratic Party, during the American labor movement, and later the civil rights movement. If you’d like to start a further conversation let me know, and I’ll go to a keyboard in order to flesh this out..
I’d like to understand what you mean by “generally less religious” in regards to progressives. I am not a bleeding-heart liberal myself; nonetheless I would go as far as to suggest that both mainline political parties in America are very religious (in a psychological sense.) Even further, that Republicans don’t have all of the answers and that both parties have provided edification, and fodder, in their own way; regardless of how much true religion they provide.
Charles Colson (who served as a staunch Republican during the Nixon administration) has an interesting perspective on this. He ended up in prison and his stance has been reformed. He ended up aligning himself with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in a sense, but has unique and interesting views considering his prior predicaments.
He ended up writing a book “Kingdoms in Conflict” which summarized his views on his time in government. It is very relevant, especially today.
The aforementioned suggestion may not be AS true today; but certainly it once was. As a student of all things history, I merely find it important to remember that point.
