Reading Hebrew helps understand law. Gay Rabbi Steven Greenberg wrote a book “Struggling With God and Men”. In this he tackles misconceptions spread by Christians who cannot read Hebrew. “Thou shall not lay with another man as with a woman.” THE RABBIS DID NOT RECOGNISE THE VERB, it was NOT the typical sexual intercourse verb. So they looked for the closest use of the verb for contextual clues. It is the same word used for the rape of his father’s concubine. So, the proper translation is “Thou shall not RAPE a man as with a woman”. “If two men lie with each other, they shall be put to death”. Again the verb was obscure. So the rabbis looked for the nearest use. Found in reference to male prostitutes in the Temple (dogs in the temple). So the verse is condemning male prostitution in the Temple. Rabbi Greenberg then points out that NO ONE IS EVER TRIED FOR SAME SEX RELATIONSHIPS. Why? Because that was NOT the law. Rabbi Greenberg then goes on to discuss David and Jonathan in Samuel I, II. The text is clear: Jonathan LOVED David. Jonathan went to David, stripped naked and gave his clothes to David. (What the two of them did afterwards is not described). Later, Jonathan is killed in battle with Saul. David delivered an emotional Eulogy. “How great was your love, EXCEEDING THE LOVE OF WOMEN!”. They seem quite comfortable describing a heroic love between a prince and his successor. (NT, Jesus never discussed homosexuality or condemned it. Speculation about his relationship to the beloved disciple, James, is discussed in apocryphal books. Honestly, the beloved disciple was probably Mary Magdalene.) and then Christians pick and choose laws like a buffet: disregard kosher, break the Sabbath, commit adultery, covet, lie, steal, but HOMOSEXUALS MUST DIE!
