    A bit of character adds a lot to videos. There's so many smaller channels with people not using any hand gestures and just being a boring mono tone talking head. So thanks for breaking that mold, and thanks for the content. You made some really good points and I appreciate how you added info about your camera settings and how they were affected by changes in the key light settings.

    I just did an introduction to the Key Light Air, but now I need to do a follow-up because I’m having the same issue with connectivity. It’s TOTALLY UNRELIABLE and so ridiculous for Elgato to pump this particular benefit, knowing this is a serious problem. Love your humor, by the way! 😆

      Glad you enjoyed. I will say once I moved the router closer, I’ve had zero issues since. However, I will say that this is the first wifi item that I’ve had issues with due to the router being in a different room of the house. Closer is better for sure, but that doesn’t work for everyone’s setup.

    The missing remote controls are a legitimate con. Especially, since you’re pretty much at the mercy of Elgato to update the apps in order to keep the lights alive in the long run. I cannot tell if the connection issues you face are due to I inconsistencies in the lights firmware tho. At least my regular Elgato Key Lights. Don’t suffer from it at all. Over the first year that I had them, I had to reconnect them just once. As for the WiFi connectivity: Well, you seem to be at full signal strength. So I’m not sure what’s the cause. As for the footprint of the light stands: That alone would draw me towards the real Key Lights, as they come with a desk clamp connections instead of that foot. On the one hand makes them less mobile, than the Airs, but since the power brick and cable lengths should be similar, I’m not sure if that is a real downside. What actually IS a downside is the small size of the Key Light Air. The smaller the light source, the harsher the shadows. So the big ones would give you even smoother shadow casting.
    What’s really informative to me, is how little light the cam seems to need. I am running my full size Key Lights at 32% / 60% to keep my Logitech C920 Webcam happy. And since the big Key Lights can output 2700 lm of light, while the Key Light air can “only” output 1400 lm, this gap becomes even bigger. Impressive. Thanks for the Video!

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  3 роки тому

      Great points! I found the connectivity issue was having the router too far away from the lights. Oddly enough, even though it had full wifi strength, it was the actual router’s capabilities causing my constant connection issues. Upgrading routers and moving it closer to the lights solved my connection issues completely. It was obviously an issue on my end, sure. But something someone else could still run into, so good to be aware of.
      The original key light still looks to be one of the best light output options you can get in the Elgato line up. But like you said, in certain use cases you don’t NEED high lumens to achieve the light you need. I have a small room, DSLR, gopro4, and TWO smaller lights. I have more lights than I need to light me up. The same may not be true for someone in a larger room with maybe more natural light and something like webcam.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Thanks for this review. I'm about to take this lamp back to the store. I've spent an hour trying to get it connected to the wi-fi. I wanted to like this thing.

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  3 роки тому

      Sorry you had so much trouble with it. I found that my router wasn’t powerful enough to reach the light, without constantly cutting out. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense since my internet seemed to be fine.
      Solution: I upgraded my router (needed an upgrade anyways) and moved it into the same room as my setup. I’ve had zero connectivity issues since. Still, I know it’s frustrating, because you would think the light it wouldn’t drop signal like that.

    That warm light in the background no way is 4k, looks like 2700k (unless the camera is just making it look lower in the vide)
    Good video, I built my own soft box and 3 point system using rather cheap stuff, but thinking of upgrading to 2x Key light air possibly. I hear the network connection has issues though.

      @CybrFox  2 роки тому +1

      Since the video I’ve both upgraded the router, and moved it closer to the key lights. I’ve had zero connection issues since then. I’m unsure if it was due to the router or lack of wifi strength with the lights. However, I couldn’t be happier now, as they work flawlessly.

    Hey man, thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to get some actually usable information about the real-world differences between the lights, and there was surprisingly little usable information available it. I'm glad I ran into you eventually as this was the most comprehensive comparison of these lights, with an actual real-world set build example. If you're reading this I'd love to know how you're finding these lights two and a half years on - are you still using them? Do they still work? Would love to have an update :)

      Hey there. So glad it brought you some good info. Yes, I’m still using these on a daily basis. Both as set lights, stream lights, and sometimes I point them towards the ceiling to give some more “daylight” lighting as my studio doesn’t have any windows. They are still holding up great and the only thing I would change is possibly adding a small soft box attachment for more of a “studio” type lighting in some of my videos. But I 100% recommend these. You can’t go wrong with them. Good luck to you in your YT journey!

      Thanks! Yes to change the color temperature of the white color, you’ll either need the Elgato Control Center App on your mobile or desktop. Both versions will communicate with your lights via WiFi though, so that’s a must!

    Really good video and it was very helpful. FYI your shutter speed should always be double your camera frame rate. 1/40 really shouldn’t be used unless you were shooting at a strange frame rate like 20fps which... I don’t know of any camera that does that

      Much agreed on the using double shutter speed to frame rate ratio. The 1/40 was merely showing those who are NOT in the know what the difference will look like, and the preferred way to set it. But you’re spot on.

      Just to clarify, are you asking what I filmed on that was showing the actual camera at 1:01 mark? If so, I believe that was on a iPhone Xs at the time of filming. If you’re just asking how I shot on the T3i, I just was recording to a SD card at 1080p.

    Nice review my buddy :) do you think one light will be enough be it the key light air or the normal keylight to light me and a greenscreen ? or will 2 lights be needed ?

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  3 роки тому

      I believe you could get away with one light to light you up pretty well. Depends on if you want the light directly in front of you or to your side. All depends on what type of look you’re going for.
      As far as the green screen is concerned, you’ll just want to make sure there is enough light thrown on the green screen behind you, so your software can recognize a consistent green color/hue, that you’re looking to replace. That light can possibly be the same key light/air, but you’ll want to make sure there aren’t any shadows on the green screen from you or other sources. Really depends on your setup, how it’s angled, what type of camera and ISO settings you have, etc. Any type of light shining on the green screen behind you should work, if you need it.

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  2 роки тому +1

      Good thoughts. But I think the benefit is not putting it directly behind the camera. Keep it out of your line of vision. Plus they are not at eye level, rather slightly above. With good camera adjustment, you can allow for a brighter image with LESS light. It’s the best of both worlds.

    Shutter speed is irrelevant when your doing video. It is only relevant for still photography. Small point but important.

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  Рік тому

      I wouldn’t say irrelevant. Shutter speed in video produces some noticeable differences in the overall look of a shot when it’s changed. Can you have an “incorrect” shutter speed in conjunction with the frames per second you’re trying to shoot in… I suppose not, as you’ll still have a video in the end. However there are some guidelines in relation to your frames per second (24 vs. 30 vs. 60, etc) that do make a difference.

    • @user-ms3zr4cy2b
      @user-ms3zr4cy2b Рік тому

      @@CybrFox Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter stays open for still or single image. Let’s go back to film cameras to start with. Take an SLR camera. You press the shutter release. The mirror flips up, the first curtain slide across to expose the film. Then after the shutter speed length of time, the second curtain moves across to prevent any further light reaching the film. So shutter speed is not really a speed at all. It is an interval of time. We call it shutter “speed” for convenience.
      Now think of a film based movie camera. The shutter speed is determined by the number of frames per second. Once you have a camera operating at a certain fps, the only way to control exposure is by aperture. Each frame is exposed for as long as possible depending on fps. So if you are shooting 60 fps, each frame is exposed for almost 1/60th of a second. You could conceivably expose each frame for an interval less than this but I don’t know of any equipment that ever did this.
      The same applies to a digital setup. If you are shooting at 60 fps, the sensor is active for 1/60th of a second and then the captured image is stored. This is followed by the next 1/60th of a second. In theory you could make the sensor active for only 1/100th of a second, record the image, wait a further 1/40th of a second with the sensor inactive but that would be silly. You would be losing information.
      So, in movie mode, “shutter speed” is determined completely by the chosen frame rate. Changing the camera’s shutter speed will have no effect at all.

    • @CybrFox
      @CybrFox  Рік тому

      @@user-ms3zr4cy2b But it should have an effect. Think about what you were saying before when it comes to still photography. If you were capturing a moving subject, say at a sporting event, you may want a higher shutterspeed to help capture the subject. Or you may choice to decrease it slightly to add motion blur.
      When we talk about video shooting, the same logic applies... to an extend. While you may not get as dramatic motion blur from a slow shutter speed compared to your fps, you will in fact create a different type of video image. That's why certain "rules" apply when it comes to trying to create natural looking motion and motion blur in video. Mind you, rules are made to be broken (ie shooting slow motion, or action shots that are supposed to depict frantic movement).
      While it doesn't have maybe as large an effect as still photography, it still plays an important roll of the overall look of video.

    • @user-ms3zr4cy2b
      @user-ms3zr4cy2b Рік тому

      @@CybrFox Sorry, it has absolutely no effect. Using your example, the only way to reduce blur for a moving subject is to increase frame rate. That is indeed what we do. We regularly use frame rates in excess of 100 fps for high speed filming. You simply cannot increase shutter speed to be slower than frame rate. If the frame rate is say 60 fps it is physically impossible to have a “shutter speed” slower than 1/60th of a second. If you had a shutter speed fast than 1/60th, you would end up with a jerky image with the fast moving object being in a distinctly different position between each frame. It’s totally constrained by physics.

    • @user-ms3zr4cy2b
      @user-ms3zr4cy2b Рік тому
