    Very cool. The tunes he played are called "Itchy Fingers," "The Clumsy Lover" (really) and "The Gael." The first two are very complicated and require some fast fingers. I applaud him being willing to take on these complicated tunes. Yeah, he made a couple of flubs, but it's still cool that he shared his talent. Nobody's perfect, and considering that he lives in a dormitory, presumably on an air base, and the fact that he is defending our country 24/7, I can cut him some slack for not practicing every day.
    As for the "American playing Scottish pipes with and Irish flag" debate... who the #$)) cares? There are more Canadian bagpipers in the world than there are Scottish, and more Americans observe Saint Patrick's Day than the Irish observers. The bagpipes originated in the middle east, so none of the celtic countries have exclusive claim on this instrument. None of it really matters. I don't know if this soldier has Scottish or Irish heritage or not. All I know is that he likes playing the bagpipes, and that's good enough for me.
    Thanks for sharing.

      TheInfiniterider I heard the off tones and he's a thousand times better than me. OK.....This is a joke. The Irish invented the pipes and gave them to the Scots and the Scots never caught onto it. I didn't write it, I'm just passing it on. Sorry about that. When I bought my pipes over 40 years ago they came with legal ivory mounts and a sole plate. Now I don't think you can get ivory and pipes no longer have a sole plate. It doesn't really have anything to do with the sound, it's just looks but they still look a little funny without one. I wish I could still play mine, but loosing 1/3 of a lung sort of took care of that. Oh well, I could have died, so I can't complain. He's good and I hope he sticks with it!!

    • @israelipiper
      @israelipiper 9 років тому +2

      I am one of the small number of Israelis playing, composing, teaching in the full traditional manner. There was even an Israeli piper, and an Israeli composition inside the circle on Glasgow Green trying for the Grade I world pipe band championship, Popular with many non-Scots. A fantastic instrument, when played properly, which is sadly not the case here, but no harm and I am sure he'll settle down into proper lessons. Maybe he's too busy now.

    • @rabdad13
      @rabdad13 9 років тому +1

      GigiMac (wife of above)
      israelpiper Actually, the piper here did a GRAND rendition of this tune, for not all players are traditional.

    • @israelipiper
      @israelipiper 9 років тому +1

      The lad IS playing traditional style, but out of tune, with sloppy fingering. There is no such as "untraditional" style that allows for being out of tune, losing one's fingers, playing uncontrolled tempo, and missing notes. Out of respect for the lad, I believe he could improve greatly with a good teacher. You help nothing by insisting that the playing is great, and that it is not traditional. But he'll do just fine and improve quickly if he so desires. he has the basic skills, I believe. I mentor for excellence, not feel-good approval junky fixes which are in no one's interest.. I am sure the airman's a great fellow, and I would be happy to know him. If he is ever in Israel, he gets free lessons from me.

    I never comment on videos, but can't stop myself here. I know I'm a poor player, but some people like to hear me play. This guy is better than I am. He's playing for some friends and having fun. They're having fun listening. He's not competing. He's not getting paid. The bagpipe police should cease all the showing off about tone and crossing noises. We understand: you could do better. Also, I fly an American, Canadian, Scottish, and Irish flag from my bass. It's not a history lesson. It's a little pride in my ancestors, and it gets little kids to ask me about the flags. Lighten up!

    takes more than 10 years to master, some would say it takes more than 20, though this guy is pretty damn good for having played probly only like 6 or so years.

      Only heard them once in person and that was at my grandfathers funeral. I did NOT expect them to be that insanely loud. How people can play them without ear protection is beyond me. Don't get me wrong. It was amazing and there wasn't a dry eye at the funeral but my ears were ringing afterwards and I was a decent distance away.

    I think the trick is getting the lungs strong and on beat, and tuning everything properly. I'd also love to learn it.
