The only reviewer who can actually describe what the car feels like to drive and what's to like or dislike with respect to driving characteristics. A truly excellent review. I feel the award of motoring journalist of the year is calling. 🙂
I agree. It's so refreshing to watch a car review where the reviewer doesn't spend the entire time trying to impress the audience with how witty or sarcastic they are. This was a serious grown up video and a pleasure to watch. PS loving that metallic green!
It's the only reviewer who says that the steering is good with this Tonale. Everyone else says it's too light in normal mode. Alfa said it will work on the steering because it's not good enough at this point...
I 100% agree with the comments here. A great straightforward and balanced and grown up review focussed on the car and not with blind prejudice towards the German competition.
Euw ? What? Its a shit Italian car ..again. 130cv and 160cv with.. the same power : 240nm. Why? Its the same as Peugeot 208. Thanks to the French for them technology they give them the Peugeot 3008 hybride engine 300cv for 2023 to Tonale ( downised 275 cv for tonale ) and the Peugeot 3008 screen on the tonale dashboard.
@@piglet5287 Usually Autocar deduct half a star off their typical review rating for either not being German, or the plastic cigarette lighter plug doesn't feel "special enough"
Great review, I love Alfas, owned several in the past and Tonale is very much on my list to consider when I replace my current car a couple of years from now.
"Gloopy" perfectly articulates the feeling of some some DSG transmission actions. My DSG in my VAG car is exactly that. Back to the review this looks like a great car and one of the the last if not the last of the reparented Alfas. I like it. A drivers car albeit limited by the engine and transmission. Alfas from my experience always seemed to have a soul but also a variable personality. I hope the new owners do not neuter the creativeness and passion of the Alfa spirit. Thanks for sharing Vicky.
Love the review and love the use of the term "gloopy"! 😄 I just think legacy automakers with their PHEVs are copping out (pun intended) when the real fact of the matter is that the energy transition needs proper EVs. It's as if they think the 2030 deadline (to stop selling ICE cars) can easily be extended for them because they have produced PHEVs (ie, ICE with tiny little electric motors and battery packs) rather than proper EVs.
Great review focussing on what the car is like to drive not the graphics on the infotainment etc. Waiting to see what the PHEV is like and priced at. Problem for me is nearest Alfa dealer is 60 miles away in Perth…….
Nice video. Just thought you were a bit hard on the drive train, which I think is awesome compared to other brands I've read about that don't even stop properly because of the hybrid stuff. All in all it was awesome, and as an Alfaholic, I'd buy one no matter what you or anyone says about it.
Great review of a car that turned out better than its concept. Proportions are nice, not perfect, but the detail work around the outside really works and displays brand identity really well without being bound by it. Must have been nice to be at Como. A rainy day there is probably nicer than a rainy day in London... unless you having fish and chips. I suspect the Veloce will be the 'performance' model whereas this model will likely be the volume seller. Fantastic color and so much better than all the whites and greys we see on so many cars today.
Thanks, nice review. Pure EV version please..! As a Fiat 500e owner, I can confirm that Stellantis have the components...and compassionately/passionating integrated by Alfa, a BEV Tonal should be a great option.

BMW Active Tourer 2022 230e: a 3 cyl petrol engine with 150 bhp and an electric motor with 176 bhp (WLTP range 90 km, let's say 70 to 75 in the real world) . Powerful, agile, efficient and no range anxiety. You may think full EVs are the only way out. I think otherwise. So much so that I bought one of these (to replace an AR Giulia Veloce petrol by the way, great car and a real AR, with a genuine AR platform, not a Jeep one, and a real sports transmission, ZF 8 speed, not a double clutch one). You EV guys have to change your software, you may ultimately be on the right track (we'll see about that), but you're missing a lot of details on the map. The word "transition" might be one of them...
My wife and I don't suffer from range anxiety in our 2 BEVs most of my journeys are long ones. Self charging hybrids are a cop out & an efficient diesel is more environmentally friendly!
Excellent down to earth review. Devoid of the the usual stupid jokes and idiosyncratic remarks of other reviewers who think they are smart. Not what I want to hear when I am investing a wedge of cash
Great review, Vicky! Really nice rig. Just a couple of things, though important day-in-and-out. Alexa, though, is really NOT the way to go. Not nearly as competent at Google's (just embrace it and go with it, Stellantis!). Bigger problem is this drivetrain will make the first version the one to stay away from... Another unfortunate Stellantis hallmark, trying to cheap their way into a market. It seems to always backfire. But there's hope here!
Looks good inside and out but come on dual clutch auto and probably a direct injection, all that is trouble waiting to happen. One of the reasons why Toyota simply demolish all car manufacturers is that their hybrid drive train doesn’t have any of these problematic parts that always fails and cost fortune to replace. Basically best choice currently is either to buy a full ev or Toyota hybrid.
Too bad that the 256hp 2.0 doesn't come to Europe. That might be the best version of this car with this weight. Let's see what the hybrid brings to the table. Tough that one will be a lot heavier. Almost 2 tons in kg I've heard. And what if they take the 2.0, and mount it to the electric motor as a Q... ;)
Good looking car for sure; no mention of a comparison with the Formentor though? That for me is another one that slightly stands out from the crowd in style terms so would be interested to hear what @cargurusuk think the two driving experiences are like?
Here in America the Tonale is going to be outsold by the Dodge Hornet, which is a rebadged, and cheaper, version of the same car. They should have put in a bigger battery, 0.8 KwHr is tiny. I guess cost and weight forced their hand, but they could have had something that really gets good mileage.
Bearing in mind that styling is subjective, I like the side view. It's not particularly pretty from the front or the rear. Interior looks great! They should've designed it based on the Stelvio front and rear.
