"The Cure" were at their best on "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography".

In the official video Robert Smith before wearing make up. Just a blue shirt and normal looking hair.

@thunderspike1892 that was Ben affleck actually (and I'm kinda hoping I've spelled his name wrong)

@thunderspike1892 still, what a great way to have a decades long career. Don't put the make up on and you're still be able to walk down the street unnoticed.

If you like this, you'll definitely like One Hundred Years from Pornography, 1982.

Heh - this is kinda short for a Cure song. ;) The live version of this from the wish tour is amazing and goes for 14 minutes. Well worth a watch.

With their second album Seventeen seconds, The Cure joined SIouxsie and the Banshees, Joy division and Bauhaus as godfather of Goth rock, It's a part of what is the Dark Trilogy with the Albums Seventeen seconds (1980), Faith (1981) and one of the darkest album ever DID Pornography (1982), at this time RObert Smith was highly depressed, highly on drugs..... obsessed with image of death, nightmares and Horror...... Try the Track Splintered in her Head, The Drowning man, One hundred Years or A strange day.......... dark, doom and beautiful !!! A forest is litterally a description of a nightmare, when you're running, lost and alone....

The Cure isn't my normal style of music, but as a bass player I can't help but love their whole instrumental section. The way the bass and drums work together on 'Charlotte Sometimes' and 'The Hanging Garden' is bliss manifested as sound.

Robert Smith... yet one more artist from the Lancashire area. If world music had a chart, Lancashire would definitely be at number one. Including the old ceremonial boundaries theres the beatles, joy division, new order, the smiths, echo and the bunnymen, the stone roses, and too many more to mention. As they kept saying at the last Olympics if Yorkshire had entered it alone theyd have finished 5th, well in music theres no contest. Lancashire has Yorkshire and every other area of england beat hands down.

I first experienced this gem in a supermarket via Birmingham City UK, (1980) The big apple 😂
The Cure's first top hit on a UK singles charts. David Bowie would be proud xx These guys are on an elite level, not just England tho worldwide in history! I see no band who can recreate The Cure.. they represent the people's music, we stay strong and dream big! The Cure genuis in the dynamics of tension and release - albeit in the post-punk context. The intro is one of the best scene setters ever recorded. Early Cure, especially this track, was the gold standard for "Gothic rock" music. Fun Fact: This version of A Forest is rather different to the one on Seventeen Seconds! but sheer genius and the Cure's finest single (of which they had many). Everything from the sleeve onwards creates the claustrophobic, doom-laden nightmarish feel of a bad dream that won't stop. Robert Smith's vocal here was plaintive and other-worldly, almost pre-empting the claustrophobic madness of 'The Blair Witch Project' by about 20 years. Arguably, the song wasn’t originally called ‘A Forest’. It had a slow and complex genesis in the public eye. As late as 8 December 1979. One of the most enjoyable facts of ‘A Forest’ when performed live is its ever-expanding length. It’s almost become a running joke between band and audience. ‘Fans love to count the number of times Robert says ‘again’ in ‘A Forest’. They are also always looking out for any extended version of ‘A Forest’ played.’ By the time of The Cure in Orange in 1987, it had reached nine minutes sixteen seconds. At the start of the Wish tour in 1992, on which it was the closing song with most nights, it had expanded to fourteen minutes, with Robert singing the original lyrics (as opposed to the canonical ones). By the time they played the Kilburn National Ballroom, London on that tour it was seventeen minutes. It strikes me that no band has a better dark-to-light range than the Cure. From gloomy goth (Seventeen Seconds, Pornography), to transcendentally psychedelic (Disintegration), to joyous pop (The Head on the Door, Wish), there’s something in their catalog for whatever mood you’re in. Some would characterize The Cure as a goth band, but some of the albums can be found in the pop section. Starting out in England in the late 1970’s, their peers were the Sex Pistols and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The beautiful thing about Cure music, is the timeless perfection of rhythm and lyrics that takes the listener on a journey and it is up to you how deep you want to go.
