Bruce Bosch Sir you have no right to judge a generation you don’t understand. The shear ignorance in you statement is the same level of ignorance that allows the negative comments towards Nina. This type of thinking is exactly what you said nasty disrespectful and shameful.
Wow! Every time I watch this, it just makes me see how people are so fake nowadays, faking a smile, because I compare them to Nina. Look at this. No pretend. Everything is so genuine, so intense and real. In the end of the day, this is the only thing that makes us humans: she was quite a human. Lot of respect for this great woman!
Michael Kylow - what you've said about "how people are so fake nowadays", that isn't anything different, or new. The root problem of that stems from white supremacy that has poisoned the minds of the masses by altering reality through false education, and entertainment for centuries/decades. People are too wilfully blind, mindless, and oblivious to wake up. So, they continue the cycle over, and over again.
the difference between her and the people you feel are fake is she didn't care if people liked her or not. and she wanted folk to know when she felt like shit because the endless river of racists exhausted her constantly. people who say she was bi polar seem to be missing just what she had to put up with. i think the folk you class as fake are just scared and herded along with what the media tells them constantly they should be, which is happy, upright, fully functional. human beings need to reclaim their vulnerabilities and wear them, shout them out.
Much respect to this woman. There are few, of any nationality, who are so confident to speak as she! To show such strength and power is the inspiration! To stand on her own knowing of her value! Her confidence is contagious!

Very good advice. There are many videos of her earlier performances where her beauty and musical talents are displayed so much better. This interview was done when she was 66 years of age and not in good health. Despite this, her mind and opinions come across as strong as ever.
Turner Page the show is called Hard Talk the interviewer is supposed to ask the interviewee pointed questions and challenge them that is the concept behind the show.
Turner Page what nonsense. Every interviewer has to ask questions that you might not like to find out about the subject. Would you prefer an interviewer just to say “oh you’re wonderful?”
No Messlylin, not nonsense. This lady is a musician not a criminal. She doesn't have to be interrogated or minimalized. I want to know about her art and her process. And if it gets personal on her terms not the interviewers'. Nina wasn't having it. Kudos to her.@@DeepScreenAnalysis
I can listen to her speak for hours. I can listen to her sing for hours. It doesn’t matter how she is delivering a message because either way I believe it. Her passion is so infectious
Brutally honest and highly intelligent, but I can only suffer her when she is singing (and then I do more than suffer her but become enamored with her). Otherwise she is repulsive to me. How any heterosexual man can stand to be near her, let alone to marry her, boggles the mind. She is an anti-aphrodisiac.
I like tha she says "American blacks", instead of African Americans "Unlucky in marriages, not unlucky in love" My God, I love that People think of marriage as the ultimate rendition of Love when it's not always the case. Some Love stories have transcended marriages, divorces, misfortunes and then finally encounter or re-encounter each other to be one, one Love. No marriage is necessary, no civil union, no formalities. Just the awareness of Love. I learned a lot from her today.
He did his homework. This right here is a fantastic interview and should be shown in journalism classes. Too often today we get lackluster, surface based interviews.
I love her statement, "I have no complaints about my life." This shows her level of gratitude for the gift of life and her firm temperment during this interview shows that she has continued to stayed true to her character and mission.
Every place is racists even Africa ...different tribes hate the other because of their tribe and ethnicity...that's the earlier form of racism.. We just assume racism is white and black...you'll all understand that racism exists everywhere
@@larryjake7783 Yes, but you are missing the point. Blacks in America have a different story of racism that is unique to what took place in Africa or anywhere else in the world. And you can't dismiss the legitimacy of that fact with your blanket generalization. Your mind set is an excellent example of why homogeneous generalizations are so dangerous. Yvette M.
This is the best interview I've ever heard. The interviewer had good questions and Dr. Simone had better answers. Direct and forthcoming! Her intellect was still on point.
"This is where you wanted me to play, but I should have been playing Bach." As great and as valuable as so much of the music she did get make was, the fact that no one will ever get to hear the Bach interpretations she would have made if she hadn’t been excluded from the classical world represents a tremendous loss to culture.
There are many great interpreters of Bach. I feel strongly that to have sacrificed her talents to Bach would have resulted in the greater loss to culture.
Finally gonna be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame come next April along with Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Long overdue ladies!! Rest in heaven to these pioneers.
Yes, she was a legendary artist, but she also suffered from legit mental illness. She attempted murder. From Nina Simone’s Wikipedia bio: “Simone was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 1980s.[80] She was known for her temper and outbursts of aggression.[81] In 1985, Simone fired a gun at a record company executive, whom she accused of stealing royalties. Simone said she "tried to kill him" but "missed".[82] In 1995 while living in France, she shot and wounded her neighbor's son with an air gun after the boy's laughter disturbed her concentration and she perceived his response to her complaints as racial insults;[83][84] she was sentenced to eight months in jail, which was suspended pending a psychiatric evaluation and treatment.[20] According to a biographer, Simone took medication from the mid-1960s onward, although this was supposedly only known to a small group of intimates.[85] After her death the medication was confirmed as the anti-psychotic Trilafon, which Simone's friends and caretakers sometimes surreptitiously mixed into her food when she refused to follow her treatment plan.[20] This fact was kept out of public view until 2004 when a biography, Break Down and Let It All Out, written by Sylvia Hampton and David Nathan (of her UK fan club), was published posthumously.[86] Singer-songwriter Janis Ian, a one-time friend of Simone's, related in her own autobiography, Society's Child: My Autobiography, two instances to illustrate Simone's volatility: one incident in which she forced a shoe store cashier at gunpoint to take back a pair of sandals she'd already worn; and another in which Simone demanded a royalty payment from Ian herself as an exchange for having recorded one of Ian's songs, and then ripped a pay telephone out of its wall when she was refused.[87]”

I needed to see this today. So many pearls of wisdom and inspiration. Dr Simone is unapologetically bold, intelligent and frank. I'm struck by her self-awareness and commitment to her values and beliefs, even as an intersectional minority in a frequently ignorant and pernicious time. In a way, she feels like an anachronism - stuck in a time that hasn't caught up to her yet. What an incredibly singular artist and icon.
This woman is amazing. Her words are so beautiful and carefully chosen. She speaks with so much love and wisdom. A woman who truly has paid attention too life. Too paid attention too understanding it. She is truly an inspiration a powerful woman.
I don't mean to be rude. But you are confusing 'to' and 'too' in your phrase Too means "very" or "much". To is the short version of "towards" or means in relation TO something, addressing something. Or before verbs "to be, to have, to see" A letter TO you. Attention to life. This is too good to be true (she is very good). Too can also mean 'also' or 'as well' - I feel good today. How can you say to someone who lived the incredible life that she lived with all the highs and the lows that "life seems to have gone wrong for you".. Her life was full up, more than many of us could ever dream. That's not a life that went wrong, that's a life with a calling. She lived it to the full. you didn't get the whole phrase it was "life seems to have gone wrong for you...after that" I think he mentioned the incident they were talking about seconds before that statement
I remember when I first found her through a UA-cam recommendation. I was taking Black History: African-American Studies from Africa to America in college and was assigned a couple of UA-cam videos to watch on African historical figures and she popped up. Never heard of her or heard her music so, I was interested and clicked. I instantly fell in love with her. She was strong, confident, beautiful, powerful, and my definition of a woman! Her music was powerful, giving me goosebumps when she singed. Her voice was strong and yet soft like in the interview. Her passion set a flame in me that has yet to go out. I cried when I heard, "Mississippi God Damn" and "I Got Life" which will forever be my top two songs from her. I watched all of the documentaries and interviews I could on her and I always secretly wished I could meet her, to travel back to the late 60's and early 70's for an autograph or even a hug. To sit in the audience and have her play for me to listen. As I write this I'm tearing up because she was and still is that great of a woman to me. Much respect and much love for Nina Simone.

***Based upon principles alone she is so deserving***
I enjoy how direct and unapologetic she was. I especially love how she took ownership of her narrative. She was quick to correct the interviewer on his imposing deductions about her life- Good for her! I love her fierceness and sass! Her mind- Lawd! Love her!

Ty, I will
Very good advice. There are many videos of her earlier performances where her beauty and musical talents are displayed so much better. This interview was done when she was 66 years of age and not in good health. Despite this, her mind and opinions come across as strong as ever.
Ok thanks!!
It's my first. I already loved her 2 minutes in
Is she really bipolar?? And with mental issue? Doesn't seem to me tho. She sounds sharp and highly intelligent! Very very beautiful woman 😘
This interviewer is politely trying to down play her. She confronts him every time.
Turner Page the show is called Hard Talk the interviewer is supposed to ask the interviewee pointed questions and challenge them that is the concept behind the show.
@@frankwhite4643 Lol, exactly!!
Turner Page what nonsense. Every interviewer has to ask questions that you might not like to find out about the subject. Would you prefer an interviewer just to say “oh you’re wonderful?”

I like tha she says "American blacks", instead of African Americans
"Unlucky in marriages, not unlucky in love" My God, I love that
People think of marriage as the ultimate rendition of Love when it's not always the case. Some Love stories have transcended marriages, divorces, misfortunes and then finally encounter or re-encounter each other to be one, one Love. No marriage is necessary, no civil union, no formalities. Just the awareness of Love.
I learned a lot from her today.
This seems a sufficient synopsis of the interview. 🥰

Nina: “RACISM” ✊🏿
John Thomas America still racist in 2020 . I am working on living now

This is the best interview I've ever heard. The interviewer had good questions and Dr. Simone had better answers. Direct and forthcoming! Her intellect was still on point.
I just said this out loud! She was really a triumph in every way here.
"This is where you wanted me to play, but I should have been playing Bach."
As great and as valuable as so much of the music she did get make was, the fact that no one will ever get to hear the Bach interpretations she would have made if she hadn’t been excluded from the classical world represents a tremendous loss to culture.
There are many great interpreters of Bach. I feel strongly that to have sacrificed her talents to Bach would have resulted in the greater loss to culture.

Yes, she was a legendary artist, but she also suffered from legit mental illness. She attempted murder. From Nina Simone’s Wikipedia bio:
“Simone was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 1980s.[80] She was known for her temper and outbursts of aggression.[81] In 1985, Simone fired a gun at a record company executive, whom she accused of stealing royalties. Simone said she "tried to kill him" but "missed".[82] In 1995 while living in France, she shot and wounded her neighbor's son with an air gun after the boy's laughter disturbed her concentration and she perceived his response to her complaints as racial insults;[83][84] she was sentenced to eight months in jail, which was suspended pending a psychiatric evaluation and treatment.[20]
According to a biographer, Simone took medication from the mid-1960s onward, although this was supposedly only known to a small group of intimates.[85] After her death the medication was confirmed as the anti-psychotic Trilafon, which Simone's friends and caretakers sometimes surreptitiously mixed into her food when she refused to follow her treatment plan.[20] This fact was kept out of public view until 2004 when a biography, Break Down and Let It All Out, written by Sylvia Hampton and David Nathan (of her UK fan club), was published posthumously.[86] Singer-songwriter Janis Ian, a one-time friend of Simone's, related in her own autobiography, Society's Child: My Autobiography, two instances to illustrate Simone's volatility: one incident in which she forced a shoe store cashier at gunpoint to take back a pair of sandals she'd already worn; and another in which Simone demanded a royalty payment from Ian herself as an exchange for having recorded one of Ian's songs, and then ripped a pay telephone out of its wall when she was refused.[87]”
"Nelson got it done in South Africa." She was referring to Dr. King's dream. This is a very revealing interview. May She rest well in peace.

But you are confusing 'to' and 'too' in your phrase
Too means "very" or "much".
To is the short version of "towards" or means in relation TO something, addressing something.
Or before verbs "to be, to have, to see"
A letter TO you. Attention to life.
This is too good to be true (she is very good).
Too can also mean 'also' or 'as well'
- I feel good today. How about you?
-Me too, thank you too =(also< as well)

I ask myself what is a life that goes "right"? That was a foolish question indeed. Ignorance of the interviewer.
you didn't get the whole phrase it was "life seems to have gone wrong for you...after that" I think he mentioned the incident they were talking about seconds before that statement
