This coming from an old hand. I grandfathered in with a chauffeur’s license. Spray a bunch of starting fluid in the tire and light it. It still scares me when it pops. Put air to it right away. Oh, and put out the fire on the outside of the tire. I’ve had to do it a dozen or more times in my career. If there’s a leak, you should be able to keep it aired up until you get it patched.
We ( our company) tried super singles on about half of our tractors, "" just to see "". As soon as we figured out everything you just described? We nixed them. You can't limp them whether they're on your tractor or the trailer. If you're loaded? They heat up really quickly once they blow. Nice seeing the Island. I grew up in Bloomfield NJ area not far from NYC. When I started Trucking those were my highways/ routes. The 5 boros and Staten Island and Long Island, CT and New Jersey. I was 24 then. I'm 61 now living in Amishland, middle of PA. Glad you got squared away
Rode with my dad when I was a kid in a 73 Astro cabover V-12 Detroit, he always had windex and papertowels on the doghouse. Love your video's and your passion for what you do. I know it's a hard job, that's why my dad to go in the Navy. Keep up the great work and be safe out there.
WOW! Steven. That company is having fun with your time. I would have chopped up that card/service into pieces and told them turn it sideways and suitcase it all...
Great video Steve really enjoy all the different camera angles and your commentary Baby Mack delivered . Tire replaced on to the next delivery stay safe Steve.
Next time chug it over to the next exit on the BQE and hit the service road. There are lines of trucks on the service road waiting for road service. Been there a million times, for cars and trucks.
When i noticed trucks running the super singles, the first thing that came to mind was, truckers have been running doubles since the first load hit the pavement or gravel or dirt, depends on how far your looking. Doubles have held the test of time.
Damn Steve you found a Mr. Softie ice cream truck. Those franchise make a killing. Glad you were able to get a new tire to get you on your way. Great job backing in to the place you made the drop. One car looked very impatient. Knowing this was almost a month ago I hope you're able to catch up to May. LOL. Stay safe out there and the snow is all gone.
As I driving north on I-81 just outside Harrisburg PA, 5 yrs ago with my Jeep I hit debris on a congested roadway. I made it to Pine Grove exit and both right tires were punctured.
You are not the prettiest or the most knowledgeable of people that make trucking videos. YES your the most well spoken on honest solutions. Wisdom trumps knowledge ever day . Hat tip to you sir.
Good backing skills Mr Steve you did well with the traffic coming and going on the street nice you was able to get Orwell a spare shoe for the time being until he gets another good one glad to see your day worked out for you on the end with a nice ice cream 🍦 Lol makes the day better be safe motoring buddy 10-4!
24:40 a little wave as a thanks for the 4wheelers that stopped and gave room would've been a professional touch, nobody cares about those little things anymore. Anyway good video as always
Had the same tire problem in Indy many moons ago. Blew a Michelin tire on my Firebird. Pulled into the first place I saw a Goodyear shop. Asked if anyone sold Michelin tires and they said they didn't know of anyone so I put an Eagle on it. When I left and drove two blocks down the road there was a Tire America with Michelin banners plastered all over the building. Had to love the pre-internet days.
I'm surprised that tire stayed together as long as it did as much drive and you did on it. I worked at Petro in Elkton, Maryland, and I hated those super singles tires, and I remember the price was outrageous.
Cowan uses super singles on truck and trailer, at least they did a few years ago. I went to work for them out of Cincinnati back in 2009, and about half of their trailers had singles. One blew out on I-74 in Indiana, and before I could get stopped on the shoulder, the rim was already destroyed. It was an aluminum rim, so the total price for replacing it and the tire was around 1500 dollars. I hated pulling the trailers that had them, because they don't handle well in a heavy rain, and all bets are off in the snow.
They just take away the ability to limp yourself out of trouble. As a tech I like them because a wheel pull inspection takes less time and body stress but that's about it. Absolute pigs to change the rubber on a super single. I can get 3 11R's done in the time it takes to do a 455 80/ 22.5
Some days it doesn’t take much to put you behind or your done for a few days. The highs and lows of trucking. You handled it like the professional you are FSC. Wonder when they will be able to make a tire that does not puncture. Holds air not matter what. But then again why would they, they would sell less. Ya super singles is just not the way to go. In a perfect world they might but not in the one we live in. Another great video FSC. Keep’em coming. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails and happy motoring.
In 1970 we put Michlene tires of the front of our 1949 GMC 3703 coach and it shook the steering to piecies. could only Bing Man tires on duals and they looked like they were touching when fully inflated and a full load
Lot of times when they're like that you can put a little piece of wood underneath drive the tire on top And I've always got them to take air with the glad hand hose...
What I do in a case like that I would put your inside tire up on a board like a 4 x 4 book your air hose up to the tire spray starting fluid around it around the rim and the tire and light it on fire very good chance it will pop back on the rim
why are you telling Steve to do something that is highly illegal ?? using any kind of flammable material to inflate a tire is highly illegal. when I first started driving tire mechanics would smear this jelly like stuff around the rim & set it on fire to inflate the tire. that would get your tire shop closed down too quick nowadays if you used something like that.
also are you trying to put Steve in the hospital ?? he ran around 30 to 40 miles with the tire flat. you have no idea in what condition that tire is in after running that far being flat. you spay starting fluid into the tire & lite it ?? that tire could explode in chunks that come flying back at Steve & break his neck or break his face. could kill him. watch some UA-cam videos on truck tires exploding at tire shops & tell me if you still want him to spray starting fluid in the tire.
It works I've done it more than a few times I've never had a problemjust make sure you don't have a can of starting fluid in your hand when you start the fire on fire
As for backing out of a low bridge/ wrong way. I called the PD to stop traffic, was told by receiver to come that way. Receiver had a 10’ walk bridge. Had to back out. PD stopped traffic.
another great video Steve I don’t know what your next load was going too be or how far you will have too dead head to get it but as light as you are with just the plow on your trailer once you found out for sure the tire wasn’t repairable I would have seriously considered just leaving the tire off and single out the one left on that side of the axle which is easier too do with Bud wheels like you have then it is with the old split rim Dayton wheels but then it would give you some time too find a tire shop on your way somewhere or possibly find a tire online and have it overnighted too a shop or truck stop on your way. just would give you another option too keep you moving stay safe out there
You're lucky they had a tire in that size. 24/5 tires are getting impossible to find. They had one and got you rolling that's all that matters. I'm with you on super singles.
I've had a lot of luck with running both the 445/50R22.5 X One and 315/80R22.5 XDN2. Only other tires I have any experience with emptying my wallet over are a set of 445/50R22.5 goodyear super single and double coins.
Since tire is on outside and you are light, take tire off wheel, leaving wheel on truck,i have seen that done by driver on side of road.may save tire if its fixeable and allow time to find correct tire.
man talk about state troopers & tow trucks. I had an SUV stop on the interstate in front of me. they wanted to use the emergency cross over in the median to make an U turn on the interstate in Ohio. man by time I had it locked up I ran into the back of them. bent hell out of my bumper but didn’t hurt my steer tire. my road service guy asked the state troopers(on the phone) to allow the wrecker to rip my bumper off so I could drive my truck. the troopers said NO. they were determined that my truck was going to be towed. but the trooper was nice to me, they took me to the trooper barracks to pee in the cup ( it was considered a accident) & then took me to a motel to spend the night. the people in the SUV got the blame because they attempted to use a cross over in the median. after I peed in the cup I was good to go. just had to wait on tow yard to open & a service truck to come to remove my bumper so I could finish my run. man the SUV was determined by the state to be at fault but I was so lucky I didn’t kill them. talk about being at road speed & having a vehicle in front of you stop on the interstate. only damage to my truck was the bumper bent in to the tire & my fiberglass hood had cracks in it but I did a number on that SUV.
my load was printer paper for the IRS office in Memphis. since it was a wreck on the interstate the fire department responded. once the fire captain found out what my load was he wanted to set my trailer on fire.
you should keep a spare between your airlines add a tire holder most truckers do have them now days its just a safety thing people that do not have them risk a blow out and rim and tire shreding which when it explodes does a lot of damage
where is he going to mount the tire holder ? he has his chain holder cabinet between his exhaust stacks & his tarps mounted on top of that. he could keep a spare tire with his trailer but right now he has a company trailer so that is out. if he mounts the tire behind his chain holder cabinet then he couldn’t open the doors to get at his chains.
man after reading all the comments telling Steve to spray starter fluid in the tire & lite it to air up the tire I’m getting pissed. first that’s illegal as hell for a commercial vehicle. 2nd have you ever seen a truck tire explode before & what happens when it does. quality tire repair shops put the tire in a tire safety rack to air up the tire (after repairing it) just because the chance they explode is so high. 3rd any driver that pulls a dry van has a good chance of hauling a Hazardous Material load & you definitely don’t want an open flame around any load that is flammable or is dangerous/ explosive
Hopefully u found a good crane company to use. If u was here in my area. Hell i would do the loading or unloading for ya cause we own a crane company also. But we charge allot due to license's and getting permit's. U should carry spare tire's with u for Orwell. In case u ever have a flat tire again. My wife's Grandma was like u can connect hose's to air up a tire. And i was like yeah (paused the video) and i showed her how to do it since i have the KW backed up in the driveway. And she was like that's cool. U should get a portable fridge to keep water and drink's and food cold. When i got the 2010 KW i upgraded to a bigger fridge. So i can store more food in it. Neighbor's they always save there butter bowl's so i can take them on the road with food my wife make's. And when i am finish eating i just toss the bowl away (Home cooked meal's are way better) My wife she loves to cook. The kid's they cook during the week. And it's best so they can learn how to cook when they move on there own. And my wife and me will cook if the kid 's have event's or games at school. My wife's grandma was like wow he backed up in that parking spot like it was a piece of cake. And i said hell there is times i have a hell of a time backing up. My wife is my eyes if i can see good enough. And i will confront Karen's and Dick$#ds if they go off on her. And i had another driver tow a Karen's car outta the way and she was not happy. Police arrested her instead.
How the steer tire missed whatever you ran over is a mystery ... but when there's as much fog as there was when it happened it was impossible to know or see anyways.
He could have very well run over what punctured the rear tire but whatever it was was laying in such a way that the steer tire was able to run over it without causing any damage to ran over but flipped whatever it was to a position that it then puncture the rear tire. The best practical analogy I can think of is thumb tacks on the floor because you can step on one or more bare foot without injuring it if head of the thumbtack is facing towards you with the point of the tack facing down and away from you however when you lift your foot off the thumbtack it flips in such a manner that the head of the thumbtack is flat against the floor and the tack is now facing upwards or mostly upwards if it got bent but either way if/when you step on that thumbtack again it is going to hurt as it goes into the bottom of your foot. Lastly one other possibility is that he did not run over whatever punctured his rear tire but a vehicle in the lane(s) to his right did and shot it over and under his tire. The lucky thing for him is that whatever punctured his outside tire did not flip over and puncture his inside tire or a tire(s) on the rear drive axle or trailer tire(s) because I have had that happen to me and that just sucks a dirty donkey’s @#&% if you know what I mean. Hope my attempt of an explanation helps make how that tire could of gotten punctured as clear as mud

@@meangenemiller3362 What part of being thankful the outer drive picked up that FOD instead of his steer, which could've lead to a bad uncontrollable wreck is too much to understand?
Pilot truck stops use super singles on all their fuel transports. A driver told me he didn’t want super singles when Pilot started making the switch but once he tried them, he now prefers them. He said they’re especially good running light on wet pavement.
Steve, could you carry a extra steer tire that way if you have a flat on either steer or drive you would have a tire to put on? I know that it may not be ideal , however if you run into this situation again you could handle it easier. Just a thought, what say you?
your talking 5,000 to 10,000 dollars. back in my day a steer tire ran around 400 to 500 dollars a piece. And drive tires weren’t much cheaper. I never priced aluminum rims but they don’t sound cheap. I doubt Steve would run recapped tires to save money so changing tire size makes sense but it’s a big chunk of money. plus changing tire size he would have to get a different sprocket for his transmission to recalibrate his speedometer. changing tire size makes your speedometer give a false reading
Well? You're a Jersey guy. Originally. No family or friends left in the garbage, I mean Garden State 😂??? Yeah, like I said earlier in another comment on this thread. I'm born and raised NJ. Moved to PA when I was 37. It'd be good if you had someone/ somewhere to hang out for the weekend. Not talking about partying. I know your wife's very trusting. Talking about a guy that you could take a ride with. Visiting the old neighborhood and couple of drinks. Not drunk! Good pizza. See some people who you know. Hopefully it all works out for you
@@uliwehner yes both tires rotate the same amount of times. But because the used tire is smaller, it needs to rotate faster than the new big wheel to cover the same distance and thats not possible when they are on the same hub. The smaller tire will start to scuff against the asphalt, because the big tire carries more weight and therefore will scuff les easy.
@@pieterburen6004 i can see why you would think the tire locks up more easily, but it is still turning with the other one. they either both lock up, or they both do not lock up.
@@uliwehner I never said one tire will lock up. Thats indeed not possible without the other tire locking up. But when a tire is smaller than the other one and they have to cover the same distance , one tire will scuff to make up the difference in circumference. Its the opposite of turning with the differential locked with two equal size wheels. But the effect on the tires is the same: One will scuff. (The one with the least amount of weight on it.)
Well at least it wasn't a steer tire. Why don't you invest in either a 12 volt electric cooler or one of these newer ones that keeps ice all week? My dad was doing that in his truck 20 years ago so he didn't end up in so many spots with nothing to eat.
it’s why Steve talks about being happy to just make runs from Wisconsin & back. all he carries is his clean cloths & his camera equipment. when I was running all over the country I was happy I had cabinets in my sleeper. I had a TV & a microwave. I carried can goods under my bunk. if I had to spend the night at a rest area or on the street in front of a customer I could heat up a can of soup or chili or something. Steve has never mentioned how he enjoyed his time in the AirForce but if nothing else he could carry a case of MREs in his truck.
Where would you keep it. Just run common size and hopefully get to a tire shop or if a steer road side assistance. It's all part of being self employed
On the front deck of the trailer, like he carries a spare trailer tire when running loads west of the Mississippi, but that would take up loading space. There's also up against the chain rack behind the cab, stand it up and lash it there, but he would have to undo it every time he needs to access his chains, which would be a pain in the ass. Other then that two places, he's pretty SOL. I've seen Outback Truckers on UA-cam being out in the Australian Bush and needing to haul their parts and spare tires, but they usually sling them under the trailers. Can't really do that with his RGN.
This coming from an old hand. I grandfathered in with a chauffeur’s license. Spray a bunch of starting fluid in the tire and light it. It still scares me when it pops. Put air to it right away. Hi Steve,
In my 35 years of driving, OTR & Local in Chicago.
I had 3 steers blow out. Good video as always.
back it on a plank and put some grease around the bead take the valve center out and put the air to it
OMG Steve Good tire shop mend / repair your tire cus its repairable i know cus I am a Michelin certified tire worker!!@

It works I've done it more than a few times I've never had a problemjust make sure you don't have a can of starting fluid in your hand when you start the fire on fire
If you have a tire that came loose from the bead, axel grease works rally well for adding air to your tire.

And my wife and me will cook if the kid
's have event's or games at school.
@@gullreefclub Yup... I imagine that's a distinct possibility.
would have been cool to see the truck in person my uncle owns that pizza place in the parking lot across the street from barnwell
Good evening brother
" The greatest people in business choose to do what is cost efficient and allow one self to make the most money never harming anyone else in the now and long run." Capitalism defined M. B.
Sounds like your clutch needs some adjusting Steve.
Thats scary because that tire is inline with the steer tire
Yeah. Real lucky whatever that tire picked up wasn't picked up by the steer beforehand.
@@meangenemiller3362 What part of being thankful the outer drive picked up that FOD instead of his steer, which could've lead to a bad uncontrollable wreck is too much to understand?
It still sucks that no one on the road will wait for you back in completely before they go around you
Sumitomo the Michelin of Japan, very reliable...😊
Sounds like 8 new tires and new rims 😂
My thoughts exactly 😅
It's better if you catch a leak happening before it goes that far maybe you can get lucky to plug it to get you further down the road
Pilot truck stops use super singles on all their fuel transports. A driver told me he didn’t want super singles when Pilot started making the switch but once he tried them, he now prefers them. He said they’re especially good running light on wet pavement.
They arent the best tho.
Front tyre usually flicks up whatevers on the road and the rear tyre usually catches it 😏
I thought for sure you going to use starter fluid on that tire😂
That's what I would have done lol. Might have found the leak at least
Steve, could you carry a extra steer tire that way if you have a flat on either steer or drive you would have a tire to put on? I know that it may not be ideal , however if you run into this situation again you could handle it easier. Just a thought, what say you?
U talk about them super single tires ...I see a lot of trucks in pa and around have them some have all on the truck and trailer
Good back driver
TIRE SHOP NEXT TO RYDER RENTAL SHITTY TIITY BAR AROUND THE CORNER HAHA GREAT PIZZA IN FARMINDALE SAFE TRIP MY FRIEND
22.5's are more common these days. might be worth while to invest into all new rims/ tires to be more able to fix a flat like that
your talking 5,000 to 10,000 dollars. back in my day a steer tire ran around 400 to 500 dollars a piece.
@@steamindemon3389 Orwell's speedo has been broken for a while, so that's not an issue.
@@steamindemon3389 avg price per drive is about 500 today. Steer tires are about 700 a pice depending on the brand
Hopefully it all works out for you
Super singles suck no traction on mud or snow!!!!! My company uses Goodyear recaps pretty decent tire
Shot of start fluid seat the bead
Why don't you spray a little bit of starting fluid in there about halfway around it give her a a light it'll it'll burn enough to seal the bead
Starting fluid and a lighter and a air hose.
Dude! Don’t bite on your ice cream man!
You make my teeth cringe. Lol!!!
Actually Steve, the smaller tire will rotate faster to cover the same distance which causes scuffing and it will tear up prematurely.
huh? if it is on the same hub it will rotate at the same speed, just won't carry as much load.
@@pieterburen6004 i think i get what you are saying. You are talking about making a turn?
Should have pulled the flat off the rim and singled it out so it doesn't come apart 😮 and it is legal to do
LOOKED LIKE CHURCH ST TO JOHNSON AVE
So much for the salad. The ice cream though 😂mmmm mmmm 🤠🤘
You should always carry a spare tire on your Truck
What are the possible locations?
@@ArtStoneUS on the back of the cab?
@@jakealter5504 it's a cabover 😂
It will probably come off the rim if u go too far
You should switch over to 11 R 24.5. You won’t have as much rolling resistance and you would get better fuel mileage. Just saying.
No leaks cuz no air in it😂😂
Absolutely despise the super singles
I have always called them STUPID singles. Give me a good set if dualies.
