Instantly Make Introducing Solids Easier - 6 Extremely Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • There are 6 common mistakes I see parents making when they are introducing solids to their baby. If the parent is using the baby lead weaning approach (BLW) or starting their baby on pureed food (stage 1 baby food), they still make these mistakes. Unfortunately, these mistakes make mealtimes so much harder than it needs to be.
In this video I cover 6 common mistakes parents make when starting their baby on solids and more importantly what you can do to avoid making them. Once you become aware of these errors and stop making them, giving your baby solids is going to be a whole lot easier and enjoyable for you both!

As a speech therapist, sippy cups are not recommended because they teach non-developmental drinking habits. They can go from a bottle to drinking from a cup with your help. Parents choose sippy cups for the purpose of mess-making, but it’s encouraged that there are no “roaming cups” around the house but instead the cup stays at the table and the child has to go to the table for a drink.
Also, don’t wipe the spoon on the baby’s upper lip when feeding them purée. This does not teach them lip closure. Instead, hold the spoon in the opening of their lips and let the baby learn to close their lips on the spoon to “strip” the food from the spoon. They will get good at it in even one meal if you are consistent.

You mention the high chair support again in this video. I watched your other video about it and I can’t tell you enough what a huge difference these small changes made to my baby and his attention span during mealtimes.
His old high chair was a copy of the trip trap from Aldi, but still not that supportive. I’ve swapped for the Chico Polly which was at our in- laws house and having the leg support and comfy seat made my baby so content to sit and engage with the food rather than banging his hands on the tray because he was bored/ uncomfortable. He’s so happy at mealtimes now. Thank you.
It’s amazing how the internet has allowed you all the way in AUS to send this info to me here in the UK and have such a significant positive impact on both my and my baby’s experience. I’m so grateful for your resources and advice and the fact you’ve made it so easily available, you really have made a tangible difference. If you have a Patreon I’d love to join and support you.
    Hope this ramble makes sense!
THANK YOU, from an exhausted mumma 😍

Hi @S P thank you so much for your lovely comment.
I am so glad to hear that once you gave your little one a bit more support in the high chair he was happier during mealtimes. Also really excited to hear that you have found my videos helpful. I know how exhausting it is being a parent and just want to make the journey a little easier.
I don't have a Patreon but I am very flattered you asked. I was wondering though if you would be ok with me quoting you on my website once it is up and running?
Again thank you so much for your kind words!😁

Love this! Helps me see what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. Gotta get better at eating together. Hard in my small house. One thing I make sure to do is not be anxious with her mess or gagging. We giggle and say "good job you're working so hard to learn how to eat! So proud." With a big smile. Despite the fact she gags, she keeps trying to put the food in her mouth ^_^

Hi Emma, Thank you for all of your videos, I always make your videos as my guidelines to help us as a new parents guiding our baby. The thing that confusing us is, our baby is easily or very quickly to close his mouth regarding of foods but if we give him fruits (puree or just a smashed fruit) he open up his mouth wide and willingly without hesitation. And that happens right after the meal is finish or he's feeling full. do you know why he is like that?or maybe what should I do to make him like his main meal just as he like his fruits?

I have watched your video on adjusting the high chair and he does stay in there longer than before (used to only sit there while watching us in the kitchen) but will still only eat a little before asking to be taken out. He will eat while on your lap or on the play mat though. Is that okay? I’m considering getting the Stokke chair if it’ll make him stay at the table so that we can all eat at the same time instead of having the adult stop eating to hold him in our lap to continue feeding him.
Also, my baby pretty much skipped the puree stage(only liked fruit/vegetable puree and not rice/oatmeal) in about a week and went straight for finger foods like cereals which he will eat after rejecting normal solid foods. He will eat if he is hand fed or successful in picking up his food(pincer grip at 7+ months!), doesn’t really like to be spoon fed either.

The high chair support is so true I now carry some resistance bands when we got out so I can either tie or slip on the high chair as most don’t have a footrest and the difference is huge. We also use bubs trolley liner to place around her because they are usually too big for her and put her in just before the food comes so she’s not restless when it’s time to eat.

*Hello everyone! How do you think I should do to set boundaries with my mom or the close family member who'll be looking for my baby when I'll go back to work?*
I am due tomorrow and I'm so anxious about everything, but mostly about how to do as a working mom after maternity ends... I fear that all the discipline, educational, feeding and sleeping progress I'll make with my baby will be lost when I'll leave her with my mom. She's gentle and doesn't hit to discipline, but also she'd give up to tantrums. She doesn't read books because her eyes hurt, she'd try to make the baby eat more when spoon feeding because she fears she'd stay hungry and she would put her to bed early. She doesn't have bad intentions, of course. It's just I'd prefer to raise my baby in a certain way and I don't know what to do to make the people who look out for her do the same. I'd appreciate any piece of advice
(P.S. I created a channel just to comment on your videos because I find them eye opening and life saving. Thank you for sharing all these tips!)

I have tried multiple times to move her to solids but she gags cries and vomits a lot and I always have to quit for a few days and again start over. I have been trying this for 1 year but no improvement. She doesn’t have ADHD she is not autistic but doesn’t want to touch food and take it into her mouth. her weight is normal and I don’t want it to go down thats why I have been feeding her purees by spoon. Can you guide me what should I do. If I stop making purees will she try to eat something soft semi solid like nugget or cutlet or french fries. or should I wait till she understand what I am trying to say to her “ do not swallow food try and chew it” She gags as she only swallow her food.

I’m definitely starting to make my baby anxious around food… lately at diner she pushes the spoon away almost immediately. She obviously wants to play with the food but at 10 months she doesn’t want to be spoonfed anymore at all! It’s hard not to worry that she isn’t eating enough, especially since she’s always been on the lighter side of her growth curve. I’ll try to calm that down and hope her relationship with food gets healthier. Also I think one important mistake not to make is also to make sure mealtimes are at the right time for baby! I notice when we eat at 5 it goes well enough, but past 5:30 she’s way too tired and will not want to eat at all. It’s hard sometimes to have dinner ready for everyone at 5, because, well, Life. But we all do our best!

Yup I made the same awful mistake with spoon feeding. My baby will only take his very favourite foods with the spoon now. He has completely cut out rice and congee (a common staple for East asian babies). It has me super worried as well. :( He'll only self feed mostly and only a handful of foods. He's 11 months old and also stopped taking the spoon fed meals at 10 months.

It's so hard not to worry. My little one is 10 months and a half and her relationship to food is so bad now. Lately , she almost never open her mouth spontaneously when she's offered food. She would open her mouth only if she smells yogurt. I am not worried about her growth for now but meal times are sooo stressful! I am waiting for an appointment for occupational therapy hoping they can help me help her eat better.

@@chabhabettoum3916 i understand completely! My daughter is in a yogurt phase too, that’s all she’ll eat at home these days. She eats well at day care so I’m not too worried. i think it may be a combination of not hungry at dinner (because she ate so well at daycare), tiredness (we’ve been putting her to bed at 6:30 for the past few days she is so tired!), and possibly teething? With regards to baby's first solids, my daughter bought Organics HappyFamily Happybaby Apples, Blueberries, & Oats for her baby daughter. Sugar content is 13g. Instructions says once open must finish in 24 hours. So when she finishes the puree in a day that means she consumed 13g (3 teaspoons) of sugar. She weighs 8 kg. I weigh 68kg, about 8 times her weight. So if she consume 1 pouch a day, it is like I consume 8 pouches a day. 13g of sugar x 8 = 104g which is 26 teaspoons of sugar. That is a lot of sugar to consume in a day just from one source. Is it healthy for a baby to consume so much sugar in a day considering there are also other sources of sugar in her diet.

    Dear Emma,
I may be over worried, but I’m under the impression that if i let my bub touch the food and “accidentally” discovered it by putting into her mouth she’d might bit a chunk off and choke. How should I approach on this matter? Currently spoon feeding her and get a bit disheartened when she doesn’t eat that much. I got over this by increasing frequency of feeding and thinking of letting her explore on the food itself but the possibility of her choking is keeping me from it.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +2

Hi @A Ideris your not alone. A lot of parents worry their little one is going to accidentally choke on food. What you can do to help alleviate your fear is present her with food that you know she is safe to eat. It might be good to check in with her doctor on what food is safe for her to accidentally place in her mouth based on her age.

As a speech therapist, soppy cups are not recommended because they teach non-developmental drinking habits. They can go from a bottle to drinking from a cup with your help. Parents choose sippy cups for the purpose of mess-making, but it’s encouraged that there are no “roaming cups” around the house but instead the cup stays at the table and the child has to go to the table for a drink.

I was going to get the Ikea high chair because it's simple and inexpensive but after watching your videos about feeding and high chairs I decided it was best to get one of the wooden ones that are adjustable. I think I'm going to get a Keekaroo. The child with special needs actually had one years and and I loved it, but I thought it was a chair made for special needs children. The inserts were but the chair itself was a Keekaroo Height Right. She outgrew the restraints and she was still on the wobbly side so her mom passed it on to another kiddo who needed it and it's still in use. If your bub is scared of food I would recommend encouraging your little one to play with food. This means you might need to show him how to play with the food (rolling it, banging it, wobbling it, pretending it is something else). The first steps towards eating food is looking at it, smelling it and touching it.
Also no worries if everyone isn't at home during mealtimes. I would just recommend you eat some of the food too and eat with your mouth open so he can see what you are doing with the food in your mouth.
