Yeah, I bought the new one and returned it after one day. I just ordered the old version.
I have the old one for more than 10 years. I use it 2-3 days a week and still with the original batteries. It works for me very well for 85% of work I am doing. Great maschine, I like it very much.
I bought the CXS 12, and returned it after one day. That high-pitched whine is excruciating! I also did not like the electronic clutch. In my testing, on setting one, it buried the head of a couple drywall screws in a 2x4 without the clutch ever engaging. (Most stopped about an inch proud on the same 2x4 with the clutch on setting one) I'm not taking any chances on ruining a piece of furniture because the clutch didn't engage. I just ordered the original version with a good old fashioned mechanical clutch, and now I see why they are still going for full price! There must still be a demand for them.
You aren't the first to mention it but I guess it just didn't bother me. The clutch has been dead consistent for me as well.

I just got the new CXS 12 and have used it to do some installation work around the house. This is my first Festool and it's an absolute joy to use. I'm in the M12 platform but I bought this instead of the Milwaukee and I have zero regrets.

I was waiting over 10 years for this new version. I’ve been using the old CXS for over 10 years and it still operates like day 1!!! Even the batteries are like new. I was so excited when I heard about the new Brushless version, I have one on pre-order and supposed to get it the end of September. Thanks for reviewing the new CXS12
I think you will like as long as the tone of the motor doesn’t bother you. Everything else about the tool is highly impressive compared to the old model.

If you are comparing it to the older model yes... but if you compare it to the more modern competition (that are brushless and have similar power levels) I am finding that it's pretty similar. I haven't found a good inexpensive way to measure the pitch of a sound (like the motor) but in terms of decibels, they are all within a few DB of each other.
@@TinkerWithTools the similar shaped M12 installer is quieter but not as comfortable. Also i believe only Festool and Milwaukee have these c shape drivers? I didn’t see a Bosch with this c shape.
@@avih7311you are correct they they are the only c shape designs. They rest will be similar to the TXS or t shaped driver. As for comfort and use or ergonomics I think the Milwaukee and the Festool are similar but the placement of the forward and reverse selector on the Milwaukee will deter or annoy some. I have had the tool for several years and still struggle for it to feel natural at times.

I purchased the "old" CXS 12" when it first hit the market. I have used it for woodworking since then as my go to drill/driver and have never looked back. It works as flawlessly today as it did on day one.
It came with two batteries and they also think they are on day one. I can not say that about many other battery operated tools I have owned for much less time.
Festool takes a lot of hits because of the cost, but every Festool product I own has been worth the dollars I paid. It seems like it is the only company that has designers and engineers that actually use the products and know what is needed/wanted by the consumer. That is verified by the green buttons and knobs on Festool products. JimE
Yeah my only knock on the old tool was that it was a 2011 tool where the competition had all answered with newer models. It still had the Festool smoothness but not the power. This balances things a little better.

Besides the price, I didn't go with the older version when I was looking at this type of tool was it's lack of power. A friend has the old version and it stalled a lot and it just wasn't powerful enough. I went with the Bosch brushless Chameleon, which was on sale for a great price. It works very well.
Yeah the old version was underpowered mostly just because we saw a lot of advancement in 12 years. But this new one will be more competitive. I don’t expect it to be the most powerful but likely enough it won’t be a deterrent for those that prefer other benefits that it has.

Thanks for the amazing review. After seeing this, as much as i love Festool, I think I'm going to go with Milwaukee's version. You get all the attachments, it has just a little more torque and the same RPM, for only $200.
Good choice! I have a more complete review where I cover most the of the 12v competition and the festool is great, but really aside from maybe one at the bottom, you really can't buy a bad tool in the group.

In all my years of woodworking, I finally just this week got to put my hands on a rotex, domino and this driver for the first time. Nobody seems to mention how extremely light these tools are, except the domino lol. That things a chonker. Great review as always homie.
I have the ETS 125 and the to CXS. I want to get a dust extractor at some point and then also a rotex but I have found a way to justify that to myself yet. I wanted track saw for years but I am happy with the Milwaukee.

What you mention about the Domino is something I have been stating, and was the first thing I noticed when I receive fed it. It's more hefty than it looks. But I love it.

It will have a better chance than the old one but my prediction is that it will be competitive in things like speed and torque but won’t necessarily be the fastest.
The new one has an awful sound. I can’t imagine using that in tight places without ear protection.
I’ll be giving it a good run making and installing some cabinet boxes over the next weekend or two. I’ll let you know how it goes with regards to the sound.
Can't beat the old CXS when it comes to smoothness. I had a feeling the new one will be just as loud as the competition. 😢
Haven’t used the old one, so I cannot compare. However, when the clutch is in “drill mode”, there is no high pitch noise anymore. Also I am running mine with clutch set to 5 which also seems to be quiet (relatively) and is really nice drill overall.
But it is quite loud when clutch is set to ‘13’ and running high speed. Just my observations…

@@TinkerWithTools I'm having a hard time in particular choosing between the loud & abbreviated grip of the Festool CXS 12, the Festool CXS (I don't think I'll ever wear out the brushes), DeWalt DCD703F1 5-in-1, and the Milwaukee 2505-22 4-in-1. I'm not a professional-I'm just a DIYer-but I want a installation drill/driver that I will enjoy using that will complement my Dewalt DCD999 hammer drill/driver and my DeWalt DCF887 impact driver. I don't care about charging the 12v batteries on my DeWalt flexvolt chargers (and it's not like they're going to share batteries). I just want a precision drill/driver that I will enjoy using that won't necessarily break the bank (unless there is a decent reason). It almost seems to me that the original CXS elbow attachment can work like an offset attachment, which is probably why they don't offer one for it (which would save having to spend an additional $139 on an offset (Eccentric) chuck for a CXS 12). Anyway, I look forward to your comparisons which will hopefully help me pull the trigger on the right one.
The comparison is out now. Took a little longer than I expected. The old CXS I struggle to ever recommend just because at this point it's only 10 dollars cheaper than the CXS 12. Anyway, check out the video and let me know what you think.
As a Festool fan and a CXS owner. They messed up the clutch on the new one. The sensitive clutch is probably one of the main reasons to grab the old one for me. On the new one even setting 1 is way too much torque for small fasteners. Thanks for the review, I'm glad now that I can pass on this one 👍
I actually found the clutch to be more sensitive than the first generation. Do you different results?
@@TinkerWithTools I'm just judging by your video and the screw is driven in deeper with the new drill? With the old model. I don't even have a problem driving screws into plastic without stripping the threads. The only drill I know of that's even more sentitive is the Dewalt DCF601.
Okay I was mis understanding the initial comment. Yes it drove the fastener further into the wood but I still the the new tool was more precise and predictable than the old tool. But I get how to increase in torque might not be desirable for your application.
I have not laid hands on this driver yet, but one thing I've noticed with other e-clutch tools is the trigger also varies the clutch, if you feather the trigger the clutch becomes more sensitive as well. Perhaps this one is similar?
Very nice bump in power. I don’t have any festool products, but they seem like quality items.
They are pretty nice. I only have a few but for the most part they work really well.
Recently I have bought the 12 Volt from Fein. It has four gears (up to 2500 rpm), a quick-change without a rotation ring (I hated it on my Bosch) and it has a QuickIN adapter to cut threads. That is nice, if you work with construction profiles (Item or Rexroth). The QuckIN is interchangeable between 12 and 18 Volt. The charger charges both 12 and 18 Volt. And you can even use your 12 Volt batteries on 18 Volt devices: not super powerful but better than nothing.
Hadn’t heard of that one until today. It seems bigger than some. What would you relate it to size wise?
@@TinkerWithTools Yes the ASCM 12 QC may be longer. But I never understood, why it is important to have a short screwdriver. I do not care. When I the unlikely event happens that I can not reach a screw, I will buy an angle head. BTW: Fein is the Festool for metal. Sometimes I have to work with metal. And because a screwdriver for metal works also for wood, I prefer the Fein. But the Fein does not have a magnetic holder, because people cutting steal do not like magnetic tools.
Thank you for all of your videos. I find them well-produced and informative. I have a Milwaukee M18 Fuel as my primary drill, and I love it. I need a second, slightly smaller drill for general handyman use (Note: I'm not too fond of the handle ergonomics of the M12 line). I checked out the Festool CXS-12 and liked the form factor, but the high-pitched motor sound gave me pause. Your praise of the Dewalt DCD800 (with the 1.7ah PowerStack batteries) caught my attention. Recognizing this question as an apples-to-oranges comparison, if you had to choose the Festool CXS-12 or the Dewalt DCD800 as a second drill, which way would you lean?

As for your question, if you have the Fuel as your primary drill, you already have a decently compact full power drill. While I think DCD800 is a great compact drill, it skews more to the power side of things than the CXS12 does. For that reason, I personally would probably choose that pairing to have a compact finesse tool that is well suited as a counter to the bigger heavier duty drill. I think there is a fair bit of overlap between the DCD800 and the M18, and it's only on the heavier duty side of things that the M18 will start to separate from the Dewalt.
All of this is saying though that price isn't a factor, access to the platform and most importantly, that you are okay with the noise of the CXS12. I am fine with it but I know plenty of viewers on here that bought it and returned it straight away.

Very nice! While I'm not in the festool platform at all, it's cool to see where the driver style I have come to rely on (the M12 installation driver and the Bosch 12v 5 in 1) came from, and to see it finally upgraded.
What do you make of this style 12v battery in this form factor? Is the M12 able to fit in many more places, or is it just not an issue?
I don’t feel like it will be an issue but I’ll make it a point to evaluate that when I look at the full comparison with that style to driver.

Very nice comparison. I especially appreciate the size and sound level comparisons! I would have liked to have seen size comparisons from a few more angles. I'm guessing that the comparison you showed, where the new tool is shorter in depth, is the one where the dimensions difference is the greatest?
The other aspect I'm interested in, which you didn't touch on directly, is how the new version feels in the hand. Is it as well balanced and easy to handle? It's a touch heavier, how does that affect using it, especially in tight quarters. That kind of thing. Would be great to hear what you think in that department!
I have a full comparison coming out either next week or the week after (depending on how much time I have this upcoming weekend). I'll make sure to include more detail in that video but the short of it is the tools are very much identical except in length (front to back). The main reason is just the deletion of the traditional clutch ring it seems. Overall the new tool looks wider but it's really only a minor increase. Both tools feel great if you use the middle finger on the trigger approach that they intend with a tool like this. If you prefer the traditional point finger on the trigger, the new tool is very cramped there. That will all be in the full review so stay tuned.

Hi, have you tried setting to speed 1 instead of 2 to see if there is a difference in pitch/sound? For installation I prefer to have a lower speed for better control.

I used this at a Festool demo and was going to buy it when it came out. But then I got a deal on a Conturo. That blew my tool budget lol

It doubles the torque on the outgoing model. It’s not class leading but at least it’s not far behind anymore. I have found it very usable
what I do not like about these drills (just by looking at them , never used one) is that they have that piece coming down in front rather than a regular drill shape. I am a cabinet installer and I am always trying to work in very tight spaces so having that optics coming down in front would seem to me like it would make the drill less able to deal with tight spaces it essentially makes it a brick. I am curious to know if this is just my perception of it of if in fact this does get in the way of drilling in very tight spaces.
To the point they do also make the TXS version which is your more traditional pistol grip drill. As for how they work, I think it might come down to personal preference. I do like the C style grip like on these or the Milwaukee but I can understand what you are saying.
Just got my CXS12, it is loud with a high pitch. 10x worse when operating it inside of a cabinet.
I found it really annoying so I returned mine. I liked the form factor of the drill so if they make a change so that it is quieter I'd buy it again.
Same here. I have medium to small size hands. I find the grip to be worse than before. Installing a kitchen I brought the new CXS and the excitement wore off really fast. It was really irritating on the ears drilling and driving with your head inside (or just outside) a cabinet and after a few days I realized this one is not for me. It sounds like a hair dryer when you speed up...
I could not even listen to the radio anymore, like I use to when working, I had to remember to put the ear plugs in every time I was going to use the new CXS so I left them in. I went back to the old one. Also, I was not very impressed by the electronic clutch. Iffy.
I returned mine after one day for the same reason. That, plus the electronic clutch would not always kick in, and in my testing, it drove a couple of drywall screws all the way to the head in a 2x4 on clutch setting 1.

Yeah I don’t know that I am adding the eccentric (offset) Chuck anytime soon.
As for the VETO, I am toying with pre-ordering the new Milwaukee bag and doing a comparison. There will be an update to the bag as well but I am loving them. They carry enough for 95% of the stuff I do between the two bags.

The old tool was widest in the battery at 2 7/16”. The head of the tool is about 1 7/8” wide. The new tool is also widest in the battery and is slightly over 2 3/4”. The head is 1 15/16” wide so it’s just a tick wider.
Do you think you will review the CXS 18? It has more torque than the CXS 12, so I'm really curious about whether it would be worth the slightly larger footprint and extra weight (which is mostly in the 4.0 ah vs. 2.5 ah batteries).
I have considered getting it but the price has been the main deterrant. At $499 for the kit I just haven’t been able to convince myself to pull the trigger. But if I have another reason to get into the platform like testing the bigger drill then this bare tool might follow. That’s the way I see it happening if ever.
@@TinkerWithTools I hear ya on the price (hence floating up the idea to you 😉). Some people have been suggesting the CXS 18 was in fact meant to replace the C 18 (at least for many people), especially if you already have an impact driver and a more powerful drill (like my DeWALT DCD999 hammer drill/driver).
The max torque (wood) are as follows:
C-18 is 239.0 in-lbs.;
CXS-18 is 194.7 in-lbs.;
CXS-12 is 150.5 in-lbs.
This really isn't all that different considering the power of impacts and hammer drill/drivers, but the difference in size (width), weight and feel supposedly is.
Here are the total weights of all three (including battery weights):
C-18 is 2.20 lbs. + 1.32 lbs. (Festool's smallest 18v battery) = 3.52 lbs.;
CXS-18 is 1.54 lbs. + 1.32 lbs. = 2.86 lbs;
CXS-12 is also [according to both Festool's USA & UK websites] 1.54 lbs. + 0.60 lbs = 2.14.
I guess the question is whether one of the installation drivers you tested (including the CXS-12) AND a CXS-18 are enough to handle everything if you already have an impact driver and hammer drill driver.
For me, I went with the Bosch GSR12V-300FCB22. I know you really liked the DeWALT DCD703F1 (I did as well especially already being on the DeWALT Flexvolt platform, but I couldn't pass up the Bosch for $119 on Black Friday last year). That's less expensive than the cost of adding Festool's Eccentric [offset] Chuck which is $139 (which, as you know, does not come with the either CXS drill).
As such, now I am wondering if I want either a CXS-12 or CXS-18 to fill the space between my Bosch and both my DeWALT DCF887 impact driver & DCD999 hamer drill/driver.
I know I can get a smaller DeWALT drill such as the DCD800B (for $100 on Amazon), but I also want to satisfy my Festool curiosity not currently owning any Festool tools other than two of their clamps. I know, I know...first world problems! ;)
If you have a powerful impact driver and still then think the either the CXS12 or CXS18 are powerful enough to be the lighter duty drill. The old CXS always left me feeling like it couldn’t be that tool. The 12 is roughly the same as the Bosch you have. If that is enough then you should be goon
So is it true with the old model you can get 4fingers on the handle and use your trigger finger while the new model only 3 fingers fit and you have to use your middlefinger?
It is true. I have always held it like that so I didn't notice on the initial review but during the follow up testing for the full comparison to other Multi-chuck drills I noticed it.
Yes the Festool Tax. I have always been OK to pay a premium for many of these tools but Festool take price gouging to their own level.
I am not sure which one should i purchase cxs18v or 12v? I just sold my makita set i wanna compact sametime overall using. What is is the best for making furniture finishing carpenter job. 18v or 12v?
I might recommend getting hands on with them at a store like woodcraft if they have one in your area (or another Festool dealer). Given the price of these tools I would hate to recommend on and have you be disappointed by it. I think I would get the 12v and then have a different brand of dedicated big drill to handle the stuff it couldn’t handle. But the 12v is more compact. Also make sure that you are comfortable with the grip on the 12v vs the 18v. It’s smaller and won’t fit most people’s hand if they use their index finger on the trigger. If you have adopted the middle finger on the trigger grip like Festool intends on this tool you should be fine.
@TinkerWithTools thanks for the replay. I just ordered cxs18v model 12v there wasn't in the dealer around me I think 18v battary can use with other machine too. Just have to buy for centrotec new bits and drill bits. I had makita very heavy and the chunk wobble online always cheap but its replica model dealers sell much more prices.
@@kubilayylmaz1716 I believe the chucks or attachments are interchangeable and the batteries can be charged on the same charger but don’t go work on the other drill.

THE BOSCH 12V BRUSHLESS IS KING IN MY OPINION. NO OTHER BRAND HAS A SDS HAMMER ATTACHMENT FOR THEIR 12V DRIVER. BOSCH IS ALSO THE SMALLEST AND QUIETEST OF THEM ALL. MOST EFFICIENT TOO
I love that Bosch 12v. Everything about it is just right. Battery life, size and weight, power, versatility, control...
Looks nice, but why does it cost 5x more than competition? Does it have 5x bigger battery? Does it drive screws 5x faster?
Well, 5x is a bit of an exaggeration but it is expensive. Festool charges a premium price for their tools and offers a really well thought out refined tool. For some people, that matters. For others it doesn't. At the end of it, your money, your choice.
Being honest, I tried a Festool drill once and returned it. I found it didn’t offer any significant advantage over the competition. That said, I’m still intrigued and wouldn’t mind putting hands on the new CXS. As far as the Festool brand in general, I have many of their tools and have sold or retired the “equivalent” tools I had from other manufacturers. It’s not that they have longer battery life or more power. It’s that the engineering allows Festool tools to do what others can’t. Their dust collection is the best in the business and that’s very important to most of us. I thought the price of the sanders was stupid expensive. I now have two Festool sanders and wish I had done it sooner. They are smoother produce better results than anything I’ve tried. I have a few routers and rarely use my Porter Cable routers any more. The Domino machine makes the average biscuit joiner look like a child’s toy. To me it’s worth it. For you, you need to balance cost against function. I would argue that with Festool you spend more but get far more value
I’m glad I watched to the end. $139 for just an eccentric chuck is the same price as the entire Milwaukee M 12 set (on Amazon) that includes that particular Chuck and 3 others + battery and charger standard. Is Festool‘s chuck such bleeding edge, innovative technology that it merits the price? C’mon Festool, tell me you’re better than this.
Unfortunately because of the 139 price I don't know that I am going to be able to tell you any time soon.

I've ordered the old 10.8v model.. its not in stock until friday. It was £156. With 2 batteries and angle chuck.I can change my order to the new 12v model with 2 batteries and angle chuck for £309. How loud the new drill is off-putting. Not sure what to do..
That price for the older model is pretty incredible. You can't get anything close to that where I live. As for the noise of the new one, I don't find it to be deal breaker but you can see how it compares to other more modern version of this type of tools from other brands on the other video I made after this one you watched.
My man should consider changing the name of the channel to tinker with drills. I’ll keep waiting for other tools. Hopefully some table saws.
Point taken. I will have a review of two makita circular saws coming out in the coming months and I do have planned a follow up on my DEWALT table saw review. Getting the bigger tools though gets more complicated not just because of price but also the space to store them.
Other reviewer said it's very loud. Is that true in your case?
It’s 3-4 db louder but the tone of the motor is a higher tone and so I think that some are finding that tone particularly greater. The old motor is more pleasant but it won’t stop me from using the tool.
In my opinion the positives far outweigh the negative.
That's good to hear at least. But for me, I think I'll wait a few more months to purchase in case there is a manufacturing issue in the early batch. But for sure I want it.
I returned mine because of the noise. Mine was averaging between 95 - 100 DB while my original CSX was between 80 - 85 DB. The loud, high-pitch noise was just terrible to my ears. Made them ring. I also frequently use this drill in my home where I have 2 young children and couldn't imagine subjecting their ears to that. Otherwise, the CXS 12 is great. I was so disappointed as I was REALLY looking forward to this one.
I wonder if this is an early batch defect with the new CXS. Has anyone contacted Festool rep? I don't think Festool would release the new CXS with extreme high noise level. I am really hoping it's just early batch defect.

It does sound quite a bit different than the old CXS but it actually sounds quite similar to the other brushless models that I am testing against.
Mechanical Clutch is still better than Electronic Clutch especially for small screw need Presision

According to Festool data, the new tool is exactly 10 dB louder, and CXS 18 stays in the middle.

NOt really worth the upgrade. Im still waiting for their 12V Impact CX. Now that would be the sweet spot.

It's really nice you have the old CXS side by side to compare with. I also appreciate you taking the time to do a review. But this is an installation drill/driver, please review it in the context of doing installation work. It doesn't really matter which drill can drive a 2.5" screw 1/2 a second faster, that's not the point of this drill. Power matters more with 18v drills when building a deck.
A 12v installation drill/driver is about finesse and detail work. Which drill works better with small screws when joining kitchen cabinets together? How do they compare when installing cabinet hinges, drawer slides or pulls? Which has better fine trigger control? How smooth is it? How are the clutch settings with tiny screws? Does it have enough clutch settings so you don't end up over driving small screws when doing delicate tasks? How loud/annoying is the drill in confined spaces? How is the balance in awkward positions? Is one drill more stable and less likely to be knocked over? Is one drill more comfortable to use? How about comfort when using both hands? Etc.
You could also compare it doing other install drill/driver type tasks. Such as installing electrical switches, sockets, faceplates. Or installing a walk-in closet, hanging an interior door, etc.
In almost all these cases raw power doesn't matter, and other things are more important. I would love to see some reviews of precision tools doing precise work. I think thats what matters most for an install driver.

I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. Some of the things you mention are already being worked on for the review against the other tools but some precision tasks are just really hard to illustrate on camera since it’s hard to communicate how the trigger feels on camera other than telling you. I’m going to try a new format for me on the head to head comparison so when it comes out in a few weeks you will have to let me know what you think.

Being a comment over the internet, you never really know where someone is coming from, so I try and be careful and ask first. In terms of the next review, as you share not everything can be demonstrated nicely on video, but still having some shots of you playing with the trigger (or carefully sinking a screw), while talking about things like trigger control can work. I look forward to you next review.
As a side, I had a new CXS on order but cancelled it because I was concerned about the high pitch (annoying) noise while in cabinet carcasses. So thats one thing I'm really curious about. Not sure how bad it would be in real life when the trigger isn't fully down.
Went through four warranty replacements for the exact same gear failure and stopped buying Festool drills.

3dB is twice as loud folks.
You are right that 3db is twice as loud but it’s usually regarded that not until an increase of 10db so we perceive something to be twice as loud.
3db is not twice as loud (concert musician here). In amplified music, 3bd requires double the power to achieve with the same speakers, but it's not double the volume. 10db is double.

Are you referring to the new or the old festool. Because the new CXS 12 is able to drive an 8” timberlok in speed 1.
that's not a festool design, bosch was the first company to create such a style back in 2008. festool just copied the style.
Do you know the model of the Bosch tool they originated it?

my mistake. i owned a Bosch uneo back in 2009, it really was one of my favorite tools of choice when it came to drilling into concrete and tight spaces. at the time Festool tools were not as talked about or easy to get as bosch. yesterday while at work i did a bit of research on both and found out that Festool was indeed the first to come up with the design.
