The wave - we call it a 'Mexican Wave', as it was made popular in Mexico, in the 1986, FIFA World Cup . Nowadays, I think you're more likely to see one at Wimbledon than football stadia.
Correct.. Trust Americans to dis Mexixo for the inventon. Was so long ago thougth its probably gone to the wave by time distace to 1986.
As a former trucker we have some unwritten rules to keep the roads safer.
When another truck overtakes us we give 2 flashes of high beam to let them know that the rear of their vehicle has cleared the front of our truck and it's safe for them to pull back in.
This is usually reciprocated by the driver in front giving a few flashes with the hazard lights or doing a quick left, right signal.
Also, people use their hazards to signify that traffic is slowing down quickly because people behind may not be able to see past the vehicle in front of them.
This works really well, but you still get the occasional driver who drives with their head up their arse.
while I can certainly see that is courteous, here in the UK and I am now retired from the Police, that could be taken as misuse of lights. This is because it can be misconstrued by other road users. Not sure if you are here or elsewhere such as North America somewhere, as you said truck.

I used the word truck because many other people from foreign lands don't use the word lorry.
I used this light signalling system for 15 years and never had any issues with it.
I believe that most motorway cops are aware of this practice and realise that it not only prevents drivers from pulling back in too early and causing a collision (especially at night) when lights can be dazzling and the 60' distance between mirror and rear of trailer can be deceptive, but also prevents slow vehicles from blocking the second lane for longer than necessary.
Although what you say is technically correct as far as the law stands, I have faith that most motorway police understand the significance of this communication and use their digression and common sense in these circumstances.
My pet hate is people using their phones or driving with earbuds in, especially noise cancelling ones.
Although I had a few slow manoeuvring knocks and scrapes I never had a serious accident because I stayed completely alert at all times.
Much respect to motorway police who keep us safe from muppets and selfish idiots who only think of themselves.

Yes we warn of hidden dibble doing speed traps with a headlight flash. The stadium wave is known as a _Mexican Wave_ as we first saw it at the Mexico World Cup (footy obv) in '86. I think it's still done on big events occasionally.
Mexico popularised it (hence why we call it the Mexican Wave) but it was first seen in the football context at the Olympic football final between Brazil and France in August 1984 (in the US). It is believed to have originated at NHL games in the US several years before that.
Thanks for this and your reaction. After 44 years and 500,000 miles, mostly, driving driving in and around London in short journeys,a few observations. 1/ Drivers are much more courteous,in stages, the further away from London. The Suburbs are, generally, very good at letting you in and thanking you. We used to wave our driver's right arm, up and down, outside the window to signal we were, unexpectedly, slowing down.I have never used Hazard lights to do that, only using them to thank the driver behind though I prefer waving my gratitude. I get REALLY annoyed if someone does not acknowledge a courtesy and let it be known. lol
Here in New Zealand, at one of Ed Sheeran's concerts in 2023, his sound system did a big glitch which meant he had to change the last set of his show. They tried to sort it out quite a few times, then he would pop up from the middle of the stage each time, the whole stadium kept a Mexican Wave going for over 20 minutes. He loved it!

In South Africa we use one flash of the hazard lights as a thank you when slow moving traffic makes way for you.
The hazards seem to be used most when on a motorway and the traffic stops quicker than usual - like an accident ahead. 80mph one minute and then braking hard to zero. So it warns the cars and mainly trucks behind to be extra alert that it's not just slowing traffic but stopped traffic.
Seems to work well and I've seen it on the continent too.

"the wave" is called "the Mexican wave" in the uk from what i understand we call it that because it was introduced to most people in the uk when it was broadcasted being done at a world cup football match in Mexico in 1986. so yes we have it just we use a slightly different name for it.
I went to a Robbie Williams concert back in the 1990s and before he came on two girls a few rows in front of us started a mexican wave. It was truly amazing to watch it gradually pick up, getting a bit further each time until it went right round the whole arena. It really didn't take long for people to catch on and the whole place erupted once it got right round. It was fab!

Pet hates after 44 years of driving since 1980. Drivers who do not communicate and ones who do not thank others for letting them in(It DOES make me wish that I hadn't. Drivers on the outside lane in a 3-lane motorway who are not there just to OVERTAKE as that is the only reason to be in that lane. Drivers who do not make "normal" progression and when you attempt to overtake morph into Lewis Hamilton. Drivers who drive slowly to lights and then speed up and get through themselves having prevented the drivers behind doing the same and THE CLASSIC driver in the right lane, with no Filter lights, who does not indicate until you have stopped behind them when they want to turn right and everyone behind is blocked going straight on,
Definitely agree re the driver who leaves a huge gap between him/her and the car in front when approaching lights and then speeds up just as they change, and the one who only puts their right indicator on when the lights change so you are stuck behind.
@@widget1005 Yes. You,also,have the irritating ones at lights who move a few feet forward when they could be the usual distance behind the car in front of them at the lights. Then they move another few feet and then again,each time forcing you to do the same. lol Then there are the jokers,in a tight road with few spaces where there are 2 of you and just 1 coming the other way so the joker in front of you moves left into the gap instead of the "1" doing it leaving you and the guy facing you doing a "High Noon" stand off where none of the 3 cars move.There's the Guy behind you up your jaxie,when you already at/over the local limit(at that point I,noticeably slow down) lol

Many British drivers think that leaving their hazard lights on excuses them from parking illegally and causing a dangerous road hazard while they run a quick errand - it does not.
Agreed! It always winds me up when a car between other cars has what appears to be its indicator on so I stop to let them pull out, only to find that they have their hazards on and are going nowhere.

I once saw a guy in Malaysia who was driving down the fast lane and every time he got stuck behind something, he'd switch his hazards on, as if everyone else would know that's the universal sign meaning get out of the way. I've had people flashing the headlights before, but that was the first and only person using hazards for that. In the UK, flashing headlights means 'after you.' A big surprise when you first drive in a country where flashing your headlights means 'after me.'
The reason that The Highway Code advises you not to flash your headlights is that it can have a double meaning. After you,as you said or Thank You for affording me a courtesy which could mean that the driver is thanking you,in advance for letting them go:)

We give each other all the signals ..people flash to jet you know there are Police clocking speeds...so on coming traffic warn us all.. then we do same! 😂

We in The Netherlands do the same things with the hazard lights so it’s not perse a British thing.
You must do the hazards! People are zombified by driving on auto for hours at high speed, they make people react quicker to slowing down in front. Otherwise they’d slam on the anchors too hard too late.

Mexico ‘86, but don’t know if that’s where it started, or just when the UK became aware of it. It may have been a well established tradition in Mexico before ‘86. They didn’t invent the vuvuzela for the South African World Cup in 2010, but they certainly made sure we ‘discovered’ it then. 🙂

Most cars these days automatically activate the hazards when you hit the brakes hard.
In the UK it is a breach of the Highway Code, if you're flashing headlights attempting to warn them about police cameras, it could also could also potentially be treated as a criminal offence and result in a hefty £1,000 fine.. Rule 110.
As that been the case for decades? When I moved to The Suburbs 40 years ago ,that was quite common when the local police waited at the bottom of a hill, knowing some cars going downhill would exceed "30"..
When you said you tap your wipers up to go on once then bring it back down, does your car have the feature where when the wipers are off you tap the stalk down once and it just does one wipe? May be a European thing or dependant on the car but I also might've blown your mind there who knows 🤷♂

I bought a secondhand car last year and I was very surprised it had automatic, windscreen, wipers and lights you just set the sensitivity on it and leave it on automatic, and if any rain hits the sensor, then it will automatically wipe the windscreen, so there is no adjust in the speed. Mind you one thing that really annoys me, it’s got lights to tell you to change up or down gears I’ve been driving over 40 years I know when to change gear
Also such an unnecessary feature. If you're going to tell me when to change gear, how about you just install an automatic gearbox and do the whole job?

High beams are more I'm here. Hazards are still I'm here but with caution. A horn blast is shouting I'm here, and a repeated blast is just plain arrogance, so you get the how long dilemma.
I think the different meanings between light and hazard flashes sum up the difference between Americans and the British perfectly. We do it to say thank you or to let someone go first, Americans do it as an insult 😂
Only a minority of drivers hit the hazard warning lights button when they're driving at speed on a motorway and suddenly encounter gridlocked traffic ahead, most drivers don't, for a start you're concentrating too much on bringing the car to a halt without hitting someone in front, to start hunting around the dashboard for the rarely used button that is always shining out at you but you've somehow forgotten where it is. In any event these days, modern cars have adaptive brake lights, and sudden heavy braking causes the brake lights to start "dancing around" like an "eat at Joe's" sign in an effort to alert following drivers of your sudden attempts to stop.
Never knew it was a thing in 44 years of driving in and around London. I use it for one-off severe warnings and, regularly,to thank the Guy behind though I prefer to wave my gratitude.

The MEXICAN wave where I'm from.
We don't actually do the hazard lights thing, some cars do it when heavy braking. A tiny minority might I suppose but I suspect those that do don't understand the person in front wasn't doing it manually. And if you think about it, hunting for the hazards button when you're needing to emergency brake is dangerous.
Never done it in 44 years of driving.. Other than a rare genuine warning ,I have only ued it for thanking the driver behind although,in clear visibility,I prefer to wave.
Hunting? I think most of us know where the hazard light button is and you can press it after breaking.
@@cbcdesign001 If you get cut up or get yourself into a situation to the extent you car is triggering the hazards, and you're doing anything other than concentrating on keeping control of the vehicle... you're dangerous. Once you're stopped do what you want as long as it's within the Highway Code.
Most of us driving on motorways a lot do it actually. Not doing it manually? How else? Everyone but you realises what’s going on and follows suit as Michael says. Weirdo.

At 69,I am afraid,I seek these self-entitled, rude xxxxxxxx out. Must be the "Millwall" in me. At 69 and after 44 years driving in and around London,I have had enough of that xxxx. I, always try to be courteous and acknowledge a courtesy but go the other way is someone is rude. I remember 5 years ago trying to get on THe A12 out of London and a Woman deliberately blocked me so I had a wait. Karma struck and 2 lanes merged into 1 lane on the road and I caught up and went parallel to her and she NOW had to enter my lane. I drove slowly blocking her at every attempt. If she had let me in, which she could have, easily, done then I would have gone out of my way to reciprocate.

It's illegal here(QLD, AU) to flash other drivers to warn them, in general too, $61 fine and 1 demerit point, I'm for it because honestly there is no reason to be speeding.
No reason for the local police to be sneaky either. Deliberately waiting at the bottom of a steep local hill knowing it is hard to keep to 30mph...
@@Isleofskye It's not sneaky, If you know you'll be going faster at the bottom slow down at the top, simple to do. If you can't control your speed in a vehicle get off the road you don't deserve to drive.

@@Isleofskye No I don't because medical and thus legally I can't drive, but that doesn't mean I don't get a say, and just because you drive doesn't mean you get to speed just because you think you're not a danger or you're better than other drivers, you aren't on the road alone so your skills and abilities are reliant on the skills and abilities of others so if no one sped there would be no issue, but then there are people who think the rules don't apply to them, and in that case those people needed to hand in their license and car and walk, ride the bus or use any other transport where they aren't going to put others lives in danger for selfish reasons. There is no grey area, it's plain black and white when it comes to the privilege of driving.
@@dallasgrant I am sorry about any medical problems but I knew you did not drive because your inflexibility is based on the Theory rather than the Practice of driving.
I would love to see you make "normal progress" by going EXACTLY 30 in a 30mph maximum limit and not going over for mile after mile. Even the greatest drivers of all haven't got that foot control let alone down a hill. Remember, by your standards, doing 31 is breaking the law. Ever been in a modern car in the early hours of the morning with no other road users and have to endure a ludicrous 20mph limit? Thought not. Even the Guy from the DVLC told me last month that they are hoping to adjust that according to the day and location in Wales, where,as you know, they are based.
Only today,I paid my annual car renewal and that is 18 years without a single transgression driving in and around London but all road users know that these ridiculous limits(in certain situations i.e.Not Hospitals/Schools, obviously) are done to raise funds at the expense of the motorist who is the only person paying to use the roads as cyclists and pedestrians do not.
Late at night when there is, literally, no one else about is not putting any other lives in danger and maintaining the same limits as daytime driving means the Authorities gain little respect or credibility like putting "Warning Yellow Boxes" at accident Hot Spots BEHIND thick trees so they are hidden from view. If they GENUINELY wanted to save lives and that was their Agenda ,then they would ensure they are visible but they do the opposite.
