The complexity of this character is absolutely incredible

The thing that is so unusual about the character of Thomas is that the audience simultaneously roots for him and reviles him. He's flawed and despicable but so beautiful and wounded by not being acceptable in the world where he finds himself. Don't you want to grab his hand and pull him into the 21st century and bring him to a gay club? he would be a king.
We all want to do that...
It's so ironic that the character that annoyed me the most in the first season would be the one I ended up crying for.
That is one credit for this wonderful Series.... Not the only one, though, there are haaps more....

I cried. Thomas is not just my favorite person in Downton Abbey, he is my favorite person of all the favorite characters I´ve ever had and I love him so much. He has never been really happy and if this is not getting better in season 6 - I don´t know. I truly adore him. And I feel so sorry for him. Everybody hates him but he is not that bad, he is just unhappy.
But in the Movie he is happy!:-)
I have always wondered whether it would have ended differently, if Barrow had told the blind soldier why he was 'different'.
So do I.
I dont think the blind soldier would accept that. also, why do you think he was crying whem soldier died? did he have feelings for him?
The blind soldier is Edward Courtenay, and yeah I think Thomas had feelings for him.
And even if he didn't, the soldier was one person who didn't judge him and who wanted to be his friend... Since Thomas barely has good friends, that would've meant a lot to him.
He's my favorite character too. I see so many nice comments here, it makes me so happy that he's appreciated for who he really is. You can't like him at the beginning when you don't know his story, that would be evil lol. But he's so complex, he deals with issues that are so hard to face and he does it on his own, which makes him so beautifully human. My mother is catching up with the show and she's just starting, she's like "I hate him he's so evil why does he have to be mean to everyone!!!" and I'm like "yeah I know..." but in my head it's like "don't badmouth him mom you don't know anything" lol
I just started Downton Abbey. Thomas is my favorite, he's so complex. I don't think he's going to find happiness though, and that breaks my heart. it's rare a character in a show will make me feel this way

he is my favorite his story is just so touching
Thomas was my favourite character from the start. He's a very rare character and the most complex one on the show too. I see so much humanity in him. How his hard life reflects on his attitude doesn't change the fact that his actually a very good person
Poor Mr Barrow. A kind soul, but he was not accepted and that is why he acted the way he did.

This man (Thomas) is my hero!!! He is & will be my favorite character forever! at some points, I can say that we sort of share the same story! So I can deeply feel whatever he's going through!
Thomas is my favourite character from Downton! He is the only actual complex character with dimension whereas all the rest seem so flat. The 'good' characters treated Thomas poorly and we're two faced yet Thomas is still the most hated. It makes no sense! People just don't take the time to understand him but if they did they would know why he does the things he does! Fuck all the other characters, especially Carson!
God I hated Carson at the end, when he said he should be horsewhipped for being gay was when I started really not liking him, and then he kept telling Thomas to leave and that they'd be happy without him when you could see he was trying so hard to be friendly rather than hated.
Abzify1 It's sad that many people in the time that Downton is set actually used to think those kind of things about gay people. I'm glad that the world has improved!

This video was INCREDIBLY well done. You managed to make it also about the army and the men in his life and his job but it was still about him. Great. This character has so much more than meets the eye and I found it well represented.

Burning within. 'Tis a sin he hears a voice say, and lays down and weeps. No longer daring to seek he heaps up a wall and behind it walks tall, but inside is empty and forlorn , fearful of... scorn. A mask to the world that he knew hurled opprobrium. Not bitter, not twisted, but one who resisted.. and suffered.
Thomas's story is sad but it's truly hard for me to have much sympathy for him in the aftermath of all his bad deeds. Many of us have his same struggle without being so mean-spirited.

It is the name of the song but the song isn't actually on iTunes. It's from a Winter Sampler. Try googling the song and the artist and you should find a way to download the sampler.
Obviosly Downton Abbey was made in this century.. At the end of the 19th Century or in great part of the 20th this series would have been band. But at last people have started to realiza that gays to exists and that they are not bad because they are gay. Thomas Barrow suffered because he was not accepted, and that is why he became so bitter. A very good lesson for people nowadays....
