  • The First Battle of Bull Run (or Manassas) was the first battle of the US Civil War and was a total disaster for the Union Army, mainly made up of poorly trained volunteers. The Union Army fled the battlefield back to Washington DC in pure chaos due to fear of a Confederate advance on the city, but no advance came. Many high-ranking Union personnel was taken prisoner by the Confederates such as officers, politicians, and civilians; many of whom came to picnic at the battle thinking the war would be a quick victory for the Union. No such quick victory came, as the war dragged for nearly five bloody years.
The song "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was written by Julia Ward Howe, while she was in Washington DC, after an inspection of troops just after the First Battle of Bull Run when the district was still panicking over a possible Confederate attack. Troops of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment sang "John Brown's Body" and Howe was encouraged to sing and create new words for the song. It was only until the dim hours of the following morning that the words came to her after seeing the massive amounts of troops in the Union Army, the words she wrote became the song "Battle Hymn of the Republic"
