In actual fact most are lesser material than US women. But a wedding is a more economical relationship for their parents.
In earlier times a marriage meant we build our life together. Nowadays many Asian girls more or less want to get a ready made nest along with the wedding, at least a small one.

The question they didn't ask is HOW much money. Of course people are going to want you to be employed but the difference in China is the expected level of earning. This entire video missed the most interesting point about Chinese culture and the expectation of men to not just earn a living but provide way above and beyond.

I recently travelled to Beijing and Shanghai, only staying in Shanghai for 2 days and 1 night and was in so much shock between the differences of Beijing from Shanghai! Beijing being far more diplomatic and traditional, while Shanghai was far more materialistic and modern. The price difference between everything was far pricier in Shanghai as well. I'm sure there would be a much more diverse opinion if they had interviewed people in Beijing.

For me, both the guy wearing a grey shirt in 5:48 and the guy wearing a white shirt in 9:22 gave the best answers.
5:48 “...But, people should know their roles and responsibilities in a relationship. We can’t ask for more benefits while taking on less responsibility.”

The Chinese don't believe in anything beyond this life and that plays an important role in shaping their values. In a Christian or even Buddhist worldview, people that are "successful" in this life may very well be hell bound or headed for a bad reincarnation based on their selfishness. In the worldview of Atheistic materialism, which is the quintessential worldview of Marxism-Leninism, all that really exists is power on THIS Earth. If killing political dissidents for Chairman Mao furthers the power of the "proletariat," so be it. If committing genocide against Uyghurs furthers the material interest that China has in Xinjiang's natural resources, so be it. There is nothing besides power on Earth. So why would Chinese women care about anything besides how much power/wealth a man has managed to accumulate?

shalom1948hellyeah, the reason for gender imbalance partly has to do with health care though. More boys are born than girls, but if all survive, that means there'll simply be more boys than girls, which leads to more men than women. I don't think that's particularly strange.

Been married to a Shanghai woman and I knew all this crap before watching the video. While dating she never asked me for money or gave me the impression of a materialistic woman. Things changed after marriage, without any explanation. "Man pay" was her motto, but I never heard that from her before getting married. In China, and not only there, rich man are less likely to be faithful, but these women are dreaming. They don't know the difference between NEED and WANT. And money is not a bipolar item - you have or you don't have. Finances are complex and you can live a happy life without lots of money, as long as your needs are covered. It's funny how the least attractive woman in the video (the one with a hat) is also the one expecting the most from a man!

I don't think there's anything wrong with hearing the opinions from Shanghai too. Inform us that you think more materialistic people are present in Shanghai but it's good to hear different opinions. If you just want to hear people agree with your views then what's the point of watching videos such as this one?
I know a lot of people get antsy even if one out of one-hundred people say money is more important but to me, I find it to be as interesting of a response, if not more interesting, since it's not always the case that those who prioritise money are materialistic. For obvious reasons, one being that they want to ensure a good life for their future children. I find that perspective to be an interesting one to hear from. So it's a shame people immediately dismiss an answer they don't like without allowing the person to go more into their reasoning.
Though I can understand your concern. People will take one video as an example for the general population which is obviously quite an annoying thing to witness, especially if used to criticise a whole nation based on the actions of a few.

So, I would say in a stereotypical way “Well, they have oil money and very rich.” Immediately my mom would say in a joking but almost serious way, “You must marry a middle eastern girl immediately then.” I died laughing inside lol. But seriously, money is what is looked upon by both families, its not even whether shes a golf digger or not. Its just a cultural thing and common among Chinese people and many other countries. I been living in Shanghai for 15 years. And I think this video represents the average opinion quite well. Attitudes are changing tho, with dramatic increase in living standards and wealth these things happen. Also Chinese cities are competitive and expensive. Its not like in Europe where u have social safety nets.. in China you really have to fend for yourself. Having a house has always been a priority for Chinese girls... but that’s also because when you rent in China you have zero protection, your landlord can do whatever he wants so you can keep moving around if you can’t pay the rental increases.. kinda hard to raise a family that way.. all these things create this environment. You don’t own a house, your kids can’t go to school locally (good schools) and u end up paying higher school fee’s.. so having a property is a big thing!

as from a man's side, it feels very much like.. chinese girls today, not all girls but most of them, they are quite demanding, 5Cs are already not enough for those greedy women, still expect their ideal bf or pre-husband to be in good social status, high-pay job, handsome with suitable height and built, and even take care of her parents more than his own...
the demand standard is too much higher than hk, tw, sg and m'sia. All these requirements are really hard to achieve, that's people always see and hear plenty of aged single ladies today. Im very regret to know that there are so many of such cases here in china, but for men, i shall and must encourage my fellow single chinese brothers, the 3:1 ratio of men and women, is not a problem. If u cant find a ideal gf in china, never mind~ try to look far.. there are quite alot of nice + traditional + elegant girls in taiwan, malaysia, vietnam, thailand, philippines and indonesia, many choices for us, maintain strong body conditions, having a not bad job/skill, learn to perform proper communication behaviours, we will have our happy life and family soonest. Let those fussy and demanding chinese girls just be there alone.

@Phil Fry In most of eastern countries, men dont need women to have stronger career above them, so for ladies from eastern countries, the more success they get, the chances to be single are bigger, unless they would like to be with western angmohs. That is the natural logic.

The thing about men should pay for things and so on, I think that makes perfect sense in a society where men earn more than women. If you earn more, you should pay more. Here in Sweden, if I decide to pay for dinner, that's for one of three possible reasons. 1. I'm generous. 2. The other person can't pay. 3. The other person will pay the next time. There's really nothing more to it. Men and women earn about the same these days in Sweden, so there's little reason to not split the bill.

BS San Yeah. Why wouldn't she? At least a proportionate amount. I think it's the same no matter the gender.

You need to understand what background each woman was coming from. It could be the girl who thinks money is important is financially more insecure and grew up in a situation like that therefore mentions money as the priority, and to her a cake was a valuable and nice enough gift. Whereas the lady who mentioned personality might come from a more financially stable background and is independent and well employed, thus to her things like an ipad is a normal nice gift but not extravagant in anyway, perhaps to her requesting for a car or precious jewelry is what is considered unreasonable.

I make more than my husband and I came from a well off family. His family is a normal average family. It is not that the guy has to be rich but the guy has to hold a DECENT paying job to take care of the family. What happens if I am in an accident? The child no longer needs to be feed? It can cost up to 1million dollar to raise a child in the states, who do you think is providing this? My husband is my best friend and I love him alots. I love him as much as I loved my exs but I did not want to marry them. My last bf was a bartender, when he gets old what will he do? Can he feed the child? he can barely feed him self. Yes I don't mind dating him and being with him but there is no way I would marry him. My husband as well, if he didn't have a decent job I wouldn't marry him, I would date him and love him but not I would not marry him. In the end it is not really equal is it? The mom is still expected to take care of the child even if she works. No one compliments= a working mom for changing the diaper but our society sure compliments male who changes the diaper. And men as well. They know there will be a time when having kids, the income of the women will drastically decrease. So this expectations are sadly constructed by the work/society situation we still live in. If women wouldn’t get disadvantages by simply getting pregnant and children this topic would easily disappear.

I love what Asian Boss is doing and I love a lot of these videos, but I wish they would have asked better questions in this one. There's a difference between 'poor' and 'no job' and how high of a salary a girl or her parents require a potential boyfriend to have. Anybody remember the Chinese girl who famously said, "I'd rather cry in a BMW than laugh on the back of a bike"? They should have asked about that. Maybe Asian Boss can do a sequel?
Also, the gender imbalance was misrepresented. There are about 30 million more men than women, and those men who are likely to never get married or even date. But you're not going to find them on the streets of Shanghai. They're concentrated in poor, rural areas. Also, the one-child policy had a huge effect: as a result, you'll find more relatively rich women in cities, and relatively more poor men outside of them. When the women in the video said they felt there were more single women around them, that's because there are.

This is a true story guys, hear me out, I once "dated" a chinese beauty (girl) and I'm chinese, and when her birthday came I gave her a present 13 days after Her birthday.
When *My* birthday came, she said Happy birthday to me 13 days after my birthday.
What I learnt from this is personality is important at first, and after than money.
Thank you guys all for hearing me out! :D

I think it's great that you came to the change in preference from money to personality however I wouldn't entirely blame her, if you do blame her. I don't know if you're saying that you interpreted the situation as her not holding materialistic items with great importance (hence why she felt no need to give one to you), so that's when you learned materialistic items held less value when it came to love and therefore personality is more important. Or if you're saying that you interpreted that situation as her not giving you a gift as her taking but never giving (materialistic). So you realised you think such a personality is not worth having money for and therefore personality is more important.
If it is the latter, I wouldn't blame her entirely unless you've deliberately stated that you wanted to give gifts to each other. You chose to give a gift on her birthday on your own accord, however she does not owe you one on your birthday simply because you gave her one. I criticise such logic because a lot of people ruin relationships with this thinking.
Using a simpler example; you hold the door for someone and when they don't hold the door open for you next time, you get mad at them for not opening the door for you. Even though you never established the agreement to open doors for each other, you blame the person for not catching on? It doesn't make much sense to me because then you're not doing it out of kindness but to get something else out of it (respect?).
I say so because I don't catch on to these things in my life. If someone doesn't tell me that they want to give gifts, I won't give gifts simply because I dislike gift-giving. And if said person becomes upset with me because I didn't abide by their made up contract which they didn't tell me about, then interpret my lack of participation as materialism, I wouldn't like it.
Although, there's likely to be a culture difference here regarding gift-giving on a birthday equating to a healthy relationship or love? I don't hold birthdays with such importance so my perspective also derives from there too.
I'm not saying you are like this but I thought it'd be interesting to provide a different perspective.

Money shouldn't be the topic in a relationship in dating. But in marriage and settling down. Avoiding the issue is rough. But money shouldn't be the foundation towards your relationship. All of those crash hard because the love is materialistic and not on each other.

Chinese culture and traditional family values still see the man as the main breadwinner. Society provides men the role of protector and provider, that many Chinese men actually grow up wanting to fulfil (hence that one guy's comment about feeling embarrassed if he made less than his partner) Parent's don't want their daughter's husband to not be able to "protect and provide" for her and earning ability is the most direct way of evaluating this. You're also talking about a society where the gender pay gap is a lot larger than western economies. (It's not as bad as Japan's gender pay gap, but it's bigger than USA) add that to living in expensive cities, just as expensive as any other big city in the world..well most women want a stable life for themselves and their children.
I live in Hong Kong and I know a whole list of girls that won't consider anything serious if the guy doesn't seem to have good career prospects. Not current salary but future salary potential. It is romantic? nope. but does it make sense? yes, it does.

The high level of anxiety in people from countries that have a history of poverty tend to be reduced to mere survival. Healthy relationships require healthy connection. Empathy. When people are afflicted by anxiety... The anxiety overrides their empathy. So rather than judging them, it helps to understand where they are coming from inside. Terrible things like the sex trade and slave labor feed on the people in situations like that. Money comes and goes. I've never been worried about money... I'm not rich in money but I am rich in life. The best things in life are free.

I don't fundamentally disagree with the points that these women (and men) made on the necessity of financial security etc. I can also understand the desire for the man to by a higher wage-earner given the evolutionary and cultural programming for men and women (especially in a country like China) to seek this dynamic. Much of the discomfort we in the west probably feel when watching this emerges simply from the uncomfortable frankness in the expression of this consumerist attitude. Some of it though is also based in a underlying view of marriage/dating as something more transactional and empty than I would want for myself.

People also twist reality because when you share your life with someone else life becomes actually cheaper, you share a lot of costs and divide chores. Most chinese girls seem very insecure and just want more confortable life getting a rich or richer boyfriend without doing anything in their side. Many think their only duty is to be pretty...

If you're a woman who wants a rich husband, you better be prepared for them to throw your ass out on the street the second you stop looking good. Everyone else should seek a good balance of integrity and a stable household.

If a women accepts an official date, gets ready and looks great... one way the guy can show appreciation is to foot the bill. If it's a casual "let's grab a burger" then it's better to split or man or woman can pay. In any relationship... it's about relating to each other and the situations. If someone makes much more money, it would be appreciated but not required that they pay. The great thing about life together, is that we can make choices that free each other, not enslave one another.

I hate how women feel self-conscious about the fact that they need security in relationships, and that they look for men who have more money than they do. It makes perfect sense evolutionarily. We men don't have to worry much about things like being physically vulnerable to assault 24/7 which is why we don't care about security at all. I don't need a women to help me with bills and what not, I need her for emotional support. Plus i'm ambitious, i don't care if i have to pay for most things. Being a leader comes naturally to us men.

Money/materialism in China is such an interesting topic imo. You have a generation coming up in a thriving, basically capitalist economy for the first time after a long period of economic hardship, so it makes sense that they're concerned about material security! And at the same time, while China as a whole is getting richer, there are still a lot of people who are extremely poor, so there's definitely still economic anxiety about that. I agree with the man who said that after pursuing a materialistic lifestyle, people will eventually move toward deeper pursuits--I just hope the Chinese economy transitions smoothly out of its intense growth spurt and settles down without much pain for the citizens.
